If your "bad paper" has been one you've had in a long while, or you had it unintentionally stored somewhere where it might be a bit humid, then the sizing might've reactivated and evaporated over time. Not a lot of people know this (or at least, I didn't know until a month or two ago) but watercolour paper can "go bad" or expire. Much easily if you live somewhere humid/you place your paper somewhere humid. Teoh Yi Chie and Kimberly Crick Art both have video and blog posts about watercolour paper sizing going bad, and they were how I learned about it.

Also, about the weird format of jelly gouache: the set was intended to be used by art school applicants in China. They have tests where they need to paint an image in a time limit, and the open cups allow for the students to get their paints out quickly and efficiently. They also usually paint large so the paints usually run out pretty quickly, and were not intended to stay in storage for too long.

That's actually super interesting. For certain kinds of watercolor paintings I do I prefer a paper with less sizing and I recently came across a super old pad I didn't like and fell in love with how the paper reacted, but when I repurchased it was totally different!

Not only that, but fabriano paper is strange, I have their cotton paper samples: the natural color (off-white) goes bad easily and quicker, which I suspect it's Alpay's coice of paper. Their "extra white" (which is normal white by our standards but watercolor paper tends to be off-white) last longer, sizing does not disappear easily.

I had no idea that there could be such a thing as "bad batch" paper. My first thought was that you were painting on the back of the paper but if it came in a pad that would be difficult to accidentally do. And I agree, I don't know if @JessKarp or @slew could paint a movie still but I think it should be more of a thing and even I am inspired to try now :)

Animal based seizing of watercolor paper can spoil under certain conditions, especially if it lies around for a while. Humidity is enough for that though.

It can happen and it’s really annoying. I’ve had paper that makes tiny blisters when it gets wet, and paper that separates into layers and peels. Both were bad batches. One manufacturer seemed to struggle for a whole year.

When I started watercolor lessons, I was a bit suprised by the price of paper. My teacher only wants us to use Arches paper. Now that I am used to it, I tried some other cheaper papers, and they simply don't compare whatsoever. Arches paper is well worth the price, I never had problems. I tried Canson and Fabriano, there are things these brands simply can't take. Maybe try Arches ^^

Note 1: This kind of video is what the community needs. I found Alpay as a result of Ten Hundred's initial art collaboration. I followed it from channel to channel and added a number of new channels to my subscription list that I watch consistently to this day. I watch every Alpay video in full, partially out of commitment, but more so out of my love for the content and the style of the art and of the delivery. This video highlighted several other artists at the end, and I've already added Slew, ADCArtAttack, and Siya Oum to my subscription list and have been watching some of their videos. I'm always looking for new content creators to follow, and this kind of video made that possible. I'll take a referral from a creator I respect over an algorithm any day. Thank you for helping broaden my scope!

This looks FANTASTIC!! Gouache is most definitely my favorite medium. It’s so versatile!! I agree, painting studies of movie scenes is an amazing way to learn. Last year I decided to paint 100 movie scenes as a little creative challenge, and it helped me improve so many different art skills! Highly recommend studies as a practice method (and also because it’s fun!!) 😊

Gouache is what got me into art. I always hated acrylic for obvious reasons, and I liked watercolor but it was so limited. When I found gouache, it was like I discovered heaven. It blows my mind that so many people don't even know it exists or what it does.

I’m so happy you’re still using the jelly gouache and making videos with it. As a newbie to traditional art and not wanting to spend money in professional materials, this is really motivating to see. I know it’s not the best gouache out there but to learn and grow you need to use some decent paints. Through watching your videos I finally brought my own set. So every time I see a new jelly gouache video from you, I get so excited ❤

Your comments about fan art at around 5:25 got me thinking and I realised that probably around 80-90% of classical art that we consider a masterpiece is either biblical fan art, or fan art of Roman/Greek myth, or classical literary works. These days we just use different things and now we have copyright lol

Maybe the sheets on your Montagsmodell-pad were glued in with the wrong side on top? You could try how the backside of one of those papers reacts to the paint. Other than that, yeah, maybe something went wrong in the process or with the coating.

What I like about these gouache paints is that if I took some colour out on a palette and after painting it's still there uncontaminated I can simply scoop it and put it back! You can't do that with a tube.. Also I had tubes before and they dried out.. Maybe because they were bad quality I sldont know.. But I'd rather have dry jelly paint that needs saving than dry paint in a tube

Ive heard that the jelly gouache paints were designed with students in Chinese art schools in mind. They are student grade , dont need to be light fast , and they paint so much that they go through a set in a week or two so them being open isnt a huge deal but the price makes it perfect for them to use them for practice. Obviously I dont know for sure, thats just what I heard.

  • @olgahein4384

    @olgahein4384

    Жыл бұрын

Gouache is initially not light fast, including Windsor & Newton and so on. Schmincke Horadam Gouache is an exception and prices accordingly (while the other 2-3 gouache lines from Schmincke are not lightfast as well), but that was developed specifically for making original artworks. And i heard the same about Jelly Gouache being specifically made for chinese art students, who use it on a daily basis for assignments. Not surprising, afterall it comes from China and all Jelly Gouache is made in China and shipped from there, even if the different names may suggest other asian countries origin. It was actually a chinese youtuber who mentioned it in his video about gouache, when Jelly Gouache became popular there, before his YT channel got abandoned (which must have happened around or shortly after the time the chinese government banned eastern media like KZread, Deviantart and all social media in the country for corrupting the chinese citizens. Many of my favorite artists back then were actually chinese and most disappeared over night without a word).

I think the main reason why the paint is in cups is so that you can more easily see all the colors you have to work with, like with some paint the color on the tubes is a little different than the actual paint and this remedies that, just a small quality of life type thing.

I'm glad that you've been posting these Gouache videos because I've been getting into goache and not having a lot of resources to learn from. Some youtubers have a too acrylic-paint style, James Gurney draw landscapes so I've not had anyone to learn how to draw dramatic scenes from. The reason why you don't get the format is because of your personality, Alpay. For me I like having all my options laid out in front of me, I spray my set every now and then while I paint, and I'm completely content with cross-contaminating all of my paints, yes even the white. For that I have a seperate 200ml bag of himi white paint that I bought in advance (my paintings are very bright). I don't put the paint onto the palatte seperately, I just go straight into mixing them. But yeah I just don't care, and that's why I like the format so much. When I'm painting I want easy access and I don't mind making a mess, also big jellies get dried out slower than little dollops of paint, I don't have to rewet them and accidentally put in too much water. You prefer to have more control within your painting process, and tube paints not only provide cleanliness, you also only need to get the paints that you need for the color pallete. Anyway yeah, that's the appeal of this set. You could also use color pencills on top of the goache to give it hightlights and vibrancy. Edit: the gouache can mold in humid weather I take back everythinggg

I can't remember where I saw the tip, but before I put my HIMI jelly gouache away last time, I gave them a light spray of water that had a small percentage of isopropyl alcohol to try to prevent them going mouldy. Also, I wrapped each individual pot in GLAD press'n seal wrap (a little like cling film, but tougher, reusable and *very* sticky!) - it's hard to find outside the US, but Amazon do carry it. When I last tried them, I wondered what I should do to avoid cross contaminating them, so I'm reassured that my plan to use a clean palette knife to take a little out onto a separate palette is probably the best approach, as that's what you've done, too. Great work, and a great choice of film!

The attention to lighting, costumes, limited colour range, drawing the view to the important part, capturing a moment of culture and society values, what they include in the shot and more importantly, what they leave out. I know that sometimes bad stocking can ruin watercolor paper. Because watercolor paper can absorb ambiant humidity and it will bind with the coating making it less effective. It happened to me with paper pads I kept for too long in my house. It also happened to me in a fairly new Hanhemule sketckbook: most of the paper was fine but there was one page where the coating had gone really weird and it was not absorbing the paint properly, instead it was sitting on top of the paper and making a weird "speckled" effect. I guess maybe the stocking of the paper in the warehouse (before binding the pages together) went wrong? Who knows. Not sure it is the same problem but it's a hypothesis I guess.

I really like your videos and art, it’s very inspiring. I see that mainly you use oils and gouaches, I wonder if you use also acrylics? I’m trying to find some more advice about that medium.

oh man i love and appreciate this video and the art for this! I admire you giving these a second chance, Himi gouache is hard to work with, but I think that working with it in a *slightly* different way than with any typical gouache will yield better results with less struggle. Da Vinci gouache, for example, is described by some people as.. smooth like oil? And although it isn't oil paint whatsoever, that gouache behaves quite differently than other gouache brands. Heather Ihn Martin actually recommended da Vinci gouache for oil painters wanting to start gouache 🤠

Indeed, it seems a most intriguing and imaginative undertaking, this revisiting of the famous and viral jelly gouache paints, in order to produce a realistic movie scene. The prospect of discovering the unique properties of these paints, and how they may be exploited to produce stunning and lifelike artwork, fills one with anticipation. As with any artistic pursuit, the realization of the true potential of the medium demands both experimentation and skill, and it is truly admirable to see artists pushing the boundaries of what is possible with innovative and fresh materials. It shall be most captivating to observe the final outcome and to witness the application of the jelly gouache paints in the production of a truly authentic movie scene. One cannot help but feel that this endeavor will serve as an inspiration to other artists seeking to explore novel and ingenious techniques and materials in their own artistic endeavors. You and your art is truly inspiring, Thank YOU, Alpay!!

The problem with the paper is the sizing, it's made with somw kind of jelly (jaja ironic) and it gets bad with time or humidity, you can check a video from Teoh about it.

Alpay, I don't know if you've mentioned this elsewhere on your other social media, but in case you haven't, it would be lovely if you mentioned the massive earthquake in Turkey and directed folks to donate aid to there. I know this is an art channel, but you're Turkish (I have some Turkish ancestry as well) and have a big channel, and more eyes on any worthy charity always helps. Thanks, kardeş.

Hey! This is gorgeous! I am glad you were able to work around the cursed palette, though it sounds like it tried its best to thwart you! I have heard some talk in various forums about sizing issues with batches of watercolor paper recently. Many different brands, and people speculate it could have something to do with the pandemic and shortages where they have had to change their formulas up? I have also heard that some sizing can go bad if the paper has been sitting around for some time? 🤷 But I don't know anything for certain.
