The chemistry behind the silver penny experiment
Watch the viral short here: • The Alien Penny Experi...
So I made a short of the beautiful reaction between silver nitrate and the copper of a penny, where you can see the crystals of silver growing in time-lapse under the microscope.
Well, some of you were unsatisfied with the lack of explanation of what was happening (I just thought it was beautiful and AesTHeTic...), so this video is an answer to those comments. The explanation of the chemistry of the alien penny experiment.

Thanks for your kindness PK!
I’m not even an English native speaker but I got what you said. I understood it. It’s the talent I guess. I finished school 7 years ago and I had a horrible chemistry teacher. I knew literally nothing about chemistry. Like, nothing at all. And you explained it perfectly. Thank you! I just was living with a thought that I was just too stupid for that science :) nah. It really depends on the teacher

Thanks for your kind words!! 🤗
Very interesting indeed. 😌
Interesting. After all, chemistry is the study of the existence, distribution, and movement of electrons
You've got some lucky students.
So why is it called an alien penny?
It brings a question to mind if the silver is stealing the ions in the solution, what is the gas that is removing the ions in the atmosphere which turns copper roofing green ?
Basically one thing takes from another
