Silver crystals growing like you've never seen before...

I made a tiny heart out of copper wire and watched silver crystals grow on it under the microscope. The footage that I captured was so beautiful that I was absolutely floored.
This is a single replacement reaction between copper metal and silver nitrate, producing crystals of pure silver and copper (II) nitrate which dissolves in the solution.

  • @asarand
    @asarand Жыл бұрын

    I have a question. Most of the copper that we use in all of the various ways that we use it is not just copper. Virtually all of the uses we have for copper use an alloy. There are many different materials that can be used to alloy copper. My question is, how do you separate the metals in order to get pure copper?

  • @rmahaffy

    @rmahaffy

    Жыл бұрын

    An electrorefining cell is one method. It uses electricity to cause impure copper to oxidize and then it reduces to pure copper metal. It would be an interesting thing to make a video about!

    Nothing really. The protein of your finger will not interact with the electron from silver nor copper so there will be no chemical reaction and your finger will be clean and safe. Maybe the salt from your finger will oxidate(tarnish) 0.0001% of the metals.
