How to Murder a Roll of Toilet Paper with Acid

In the carbon snake experiment, concentrated sulfuric acid is usually added to sugar, where solid carbon forms as the result of a dehydration reaction.
In this version, the concentrated sulfuric acid is added to toilet paper. The cellulose in the toilet paper undergoes the dehydration reaction, producing solid carbon, carbon dioxide, water vapour, and sulfur dioxide gas.

Recently found your channel via KZread shorts and really became a fan but dissapointed at the same time that why our schools don't have such practicals to show us that chemistry has alot more than just mugging up the reactions

Thanks Tashi! You're right that chemistry is best experienced hands-on, but hopefully these videos are better than nothing!

Sir , I think is for sure that concentrated sulphuric acid to be a good oxidizing and dehydrating agent ?🤔 Could even the plastic and glass containers melt down with 99% pure sulphuric acid ? Why don't dilute sulphuric acid produce that carbon snake? It only turned it yellow which when touched after sometime turned in flakes.

Yes, the sulfuric acid is a very good oxidizer, which will include oxidizing plastics (some types more than others). The concentration must be very high in order to react this impressively. As you see, the reaction takes a few seconds to really begin - at which point the heat generated by this very exothermic reaction drives the reaction rate up and produces the exciting and dramatic carbon snake.
