Thanks for mentioning Geoff Emerick. So often the mastering engineer gets mentioned without any mention of the recording and or mix engineers. Without a good recording and or mix, the mastering engineer can only do so much. I had the pleasure of attending a talk with Geoff Emerick, here in Texas, at the ACL studios. Fantastic to hear him talk about his time with the Beatles. His book is highly recommended as well

Love your review, Mazzy. My first reaction, some time very recently, when I heard the first remixed track that was released, streaming, was, "WHAT?!?!" Yeah. The separation of the instruments in the new mix just blew my mind. I've just spent some time with the full release today, and gave most of my attention to the new tracks, "outtakes," whatever, which I'm also finding... revelatory. I've loved these guys since forever, when I heard them on the radio on my mom's '56 Chevy sedan, rolling down Highway 51, past Elvis's house, on my way home from school. Yeah. That long. That they continue to boggle me, still, after all these years, and in the middle of all this craziness, is a wonderful gift. Love you, Mazzy. ♥

Been away for a couple of days won’t get to listen to mine until Saturday, today. A couple of observations. Not keen on black border on the box,no flip back jackets & the single was originally a top loader. Can you imagine if they included an AAA stereo version as well. Mazzy, an excellent summary of this highly anticipated vinyl box set of which I received mine this afternoon. Full disclosure herein, I was looking forward to your particular Revolver box set perspective(s) as much/more than nearly any YT host simply bc of your passion for & experience with the Fab Four mixed media output combined with your love in general of CD & vinyl box sets. I'm cleaning my vinyl set as I write (I also have the 2-CD set on order since announced) but I feel I know what to expect musically 🎶 w/ this 2022 mono transfer & stereo re-mix bc of MY experience w/ my various mono vinyl, stereo vinyl & various CD sets too, along with the great online digital pre-release date 🎶 they've teased us with so far. 👍 Again, will admit that we're essentially aligned & in agreement on the clear hotpoints of this new Revolver box set. The album has been one of my FAV Beatles album for decades so with my overall visual 👀 inspection so far INCLUDING the pressing QC (you never know 🤷‍♂️; see Sept's Pink Floyd Animals) while cleaning, it looks to be a....💪 (World Series) home run!! 👍 Good vid bud. 👍

If one prefers stereo, the new remix really does make the vocals clearer and more centered instead of the wide panning to the side. The guitars chime on "Dr. Robert" & "And Your Bird Can Sing" and the piano/clavichord break is quite nice & spacious in "For No One". Of course, the alternate takes are a revelation, especially the origins of "Yellow Submarine". I enjoyed the knowledgeable perspective concerning mono & stereo. Interesting presentation!

Hi Mazzy, nice coverage, thanks. I've always seen Revolver as Emerick's record rather than Martin's. Love the fact that he risked getting fired by sticking the microphones down into the French horn. There's a great story about when Klaus Voorman finished the cover art for Revolver, and Epstein loved it so much he burst into tears.

Mazzy another great overview and excellent perspective. Here is where I am at. I have multiple vinyl copies Revolver (all stereo) as I am like you - at the time Mono was not what was 'happening'. I don't care about Mono versions. Of note, Mike at the 'In Groove' said the Revolver LP box set - all the LPs were all 'dirty' and that he had to ultrasonically clean them before playing. I bought the 2 CD package. Why? Who needs another LP version. I get a CD 'clean' first time. Re-mix sounds great. No flipping sides (been there - done that). The 2nd CD has Rain and Paperback Writer plus the best of the outtakes. I compared this new mix to the 2009 CD remastered box set version. The 2009 CD version is an improvement over the original stereo LP. The new Revolver CD version is a great remix....period! From a CD perspective that is my opinion.

Revolver seems to be..........George's album. Taxman introduces it, his sitar adds that instrument beautifully to the lexicon of psychedelia and I Want to Tell You is like looking back and reminding fans of how a guitar riff can make a hit. And, Tomorrow Never Knows (Lennon/Starkey).

I was born in 59 so not quite as old as you but did grow up with the Beatles. I remember being in my dad's 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL listening to Hello, Goodbye on the radio and him making a comment on how much he liked the song. I listened to the Beatles extensively in my 20s and into my 30s but really haven't spent much time with them since. I'm not really drawn to listening to the OGs anymore. I find the Gilles Martin remixes are a breath of fresh air and I would not be spinning Beatles records today without them.

Enjoyable video, thanks. As a Liverpool lad from the sixties who bought these albums as they came out, I am most familiar with the mono mixes. In fact (funny story). My first actual stereo Beatles album was the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. I remember sticking the album on my old mono Dansette record player and hearing 'Hey Bulldog' for the first time. My God! It was a rather boring and repetitive instrumental!!! Until I played it on my friend's new stereo radiogramme. (Going back a few years folks). What a revelation!! There's John singing away in the other speaker!!!! I've never been a fan of the earlier stereo mixes with the voices in one speaker and instruments in the other. So as years went by, I obtained all albums in both mono AND stereo. I do love the Giles Martin/Sam Okel remixes. However, I only have the 2014 mono mix of Revolver. So with this new edition, I had a dilemma. Buy the new vinyl box set, quite expensive, and duplicate my mono copy. Or buy the slightly cheaper cd box set. Unlike many people, one thing that put me off the vinyl box set was the inclusion of a 45 disc. I never play them. Had they made it a 12 inch vinyl single, as they did in the previous Get Back box set, I might have been more tempted. I finally decided to go for the vinyl single album release along with the cd box set. This gave me the benefit of having all the tracks, not duplicating my mono vinyl, being able to jump in and out of the Sessions tracks and not having a 45 record. But as you say, this is all to do with one's subjective taste. Thanks for a very interesting video and keep up the good work. 👍

Hi Mazzie, great video! I love the remix and like the vocals centre - this will be my go to stereo version from now on as I find the panning left and right distracting. I think it odd that they have not included clear labelling on the records that this is a remix - it smacks of revisionist. This is already happening with the stereo vinyl boxes where the 2009 remastered LPs are being substituted with the various remixed albums. Cheers Matt

Enjoyed that. Great review, thanks. Over the years, Revolver has slowly become my favourite. I think many of us go through such stages of appreciation. I disagree on a couple of the points you made, (just my opinion.) The original stereo mixes have always 'jarred' with me and in that respect, I believe mono was truer to what would be heard during a live performance. Also, I don't think a vocal centred remix defeats the purpose of stereo. It fills the huge void between mono and the old isolationist stereo which to me sounds completely unnatural - something that would never be heard in live studio or at a live public performance. However, I can understand how, for some people, the old sound is so hardwired into their minds that it's difficult to assimilate the new version.

That Peggy Lee version of Fever dominated our lives at that time. I was 17 years of age in 1966. 18 in 67. It seemed to be everywhere. But I am comfortable thinking that this was the Beatles best. It could not have been anything later. I think the Rolling Stones best was Aftermath, when Paint It Black came out, although I don't think anyone would agree with me. When High Tide And Green Grass came out I was so sad that Paint It Black was not there. I thought they were done, and in a way they were.

7:00 - 10:45 - I totally agree on your view about mono/stereo thing. If in new stereo mix everything is in center (instruments, vocals), than it is just like the mono mix. And i just adore panning in 'Your Mother Should Know', for instance. The only other band that comes to my mind regarding this thing is The Mamas & The Pappas - in some songs, they have female vocals on one speaker, and male on another and things like that. :-)

Then, if George Martin, Mr. Emerick and Mr. Moss had put out their versions now?? EVERYONE would have said it sounds like total shit. Everyone is just comparing through nostalgia...nothing else. Which is understandable. Also, not enough people give credit to actually how good the 2009 masters sound. Where do I begin having just watched this after Halloween Party this weekend (and I'm playin' catch up)? First off, prospective, you have it in spades experiencing it at the time. While I'm a bit younger than you, like you I started with the Capitol in my instance a late 70's purple label stereo which got replaced in the mid 80's by a early mint 1986 UK Parlophone that would of been in the last "Blue Boxes" which was one heck of an upgrade in terms of audio quality nevermind gaining three songs in different mixes. I did get the 1987 cd which I'll say outright I prefer to the 2009 remaster by long shot and gained the mono cd box same year where especially over headphones I am more for the mono mix. I did get like you the 2014 mono lp which was a bargain then and still sounds great even now being more for a broader sweap of stereo than the vocals on one side, backing on the other kind of, that's my go-to on vinyl. That's not to say sometimes the stereo mix on the original added something when it came to being spacious. You do explain what for you is great in the set - the book obviously, the out take discs while pointing out the stereo remix lp (rightly) needed something to clearly identify it as that and talk about how those remixes work cos obviously those of us who grew up on original stereo have that as our "homebase" so will pick up on differences more. I did have the 2012 lp and I'll admit to it, that one has left the house as I couldn't get along with what on my system sounded like lumpy bass and murky sound on She Said, She Said. At any rate I have ordered up the two cd set as a start point to explore the new remixed stereo album, those stereo remixes of Paperback Writer with Rain which apart from Mono Monsters I do have in my 1977 World Records 23 single UK box set on vinyl and a selection of outtakes. I'd agree the mono mixes of that single are hard to beat but hey, there's always a spot for something a bit different and having watched your video am prepared to listen with new ears and give this remix a go. Thanks again and (as I said on the locked thread at Hoffman's )"We love you" as this video was distinctive offering many of us what we find helpful.

You neglect to mention that the outtake discs contain the version of Tomorrow Never Knows (Mono Mix RM 11) that was withdrawn after the very first UK pressings were released because Lennon called EMI to complain that the wrong version was issued. This is why those first UK pressings are so rare and prized.

Couldn’t agree more about your comment Beatles get the mono albums back in print. This box is awesome. Also sorry I screwed up and ordered the Mazzy tee from the UK. I didn’t read the fine print I guess I just started clicking and after I hit Apple Pay I realized what I had done. Oh well.

I think the best improvement for the 2022 remix is Eleanor Rigby, especially making the strings stereo for the first time. Also, the late, sloppy panning of the vocals on the stereo 1966 drove me nuts!

I must admit I never heard John playing Hammond organ on She Said She Said, the remix brings it out a little more, it’s been getting a lot of criticism from other reviewers, but to my ears it’s my favourite track so far, that warrants repeated listening 😊. Is it Paul or George on bass, has that been cleared up yet? People say that he wasn’t at most of the sessions after having arguments with his other band mates?

That's a good point you make about labelling it a remix, Mazz. Your take on the mono is notable in comparison with 45 who described very significant audible differences in his video, thought was unable to surmise a commensurately clear overall preference as a result. It might make for an interesting discussion though I suspect he's suffering from irrevocable confirmation bias so it might be a zero sum debate. Do you prefer the original mono to both the new ones? I have empathy with the sense of loss of the extreme stereo effects. That was actually one of the really exciting things about early stereo beatles records, "john's over there!", "There's Paul", it added a visceral component to the staging of the performance, even if it was a little forced. Good stuff, thanks!

The stereo remixes were supposed to fix the whole "the stereo mixes aren't as good as the mono" thing. So I don't get including the mono at all. A side point, I like the '67 stereo mix of Sgt Pepper with the panning from one side to the other on the title track. It really gave the feel of introducing a band.

Hi Mazzy. Great review. You and I are the same age (ok, you're 5 weeks older than me), but I've always found the stereo mix a bit jarring and it's only been getting worse over the decades. In recent years, I've been listening to a lot of classical orchestral music and much of it was recorded in stereo using a "tree" of three microphones. This creates a beautiful soundstage with great imaging. Then, when I go back and listen to this Beatles form of stereo, it just seems too unnatural. So, I'm looking forward to this remix. Just my humble opinion.

I'm one of those that criticises the length of these CDs. The vinyl box is great - really expensive - but great. I love the mono mix, really like the stereo remix, have always disliked the original stereo mix (although I first heard it as a teenager in the 80s) and like the alternates. As a vinyl set, it's superb. But vinyl and CD have very different uses and I don't agree with the same division of material on discs as per vinyl. CDs are perfect for storing BIG chunks of music that don't necessarily fit on LPs - they were developed to fit more music on, not to simply replicate vinyl on a compact format. It's a lot to do with convenience and - just my opinion, but - these Beatles releases are spread far too thin on CD. There's no way I'm paying £100 for around 2 CDs worth of music. The archival CD release should either have way more material or be a £30-40 set on 2 discs. CD buyers are missing out because they're not getting the beauty of a 12" vinyl set with the sleeves, the vinyl, the 12" booklet etc and they should be compensated with a much lower priced set. If we NEED a vinyl issue of every archival release, where's the 36 LP set of The Complete Cutting Edge?

This remix did not solve any of the problems of the eternal debate about which is better - mono or stereo. One or two interestingly reworked songs like Eleanor Rigby don't affect anything, as mono still sounds better. But I liked the outtakes, although expected more variety and Eleanor Rigby's demo, which proves once again that Paul only wrote a fragment of the song.

Because I’m not a fan of the Giles Martin remixes of Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road I was on the fence about picking up this new Revolver set, even though it’s loaded with all the other goodies. But after watching your unbiased perspective with your history of soaking in The Beatles music, I’m now considering pulling the trigger. Thank you for your video which has given me much food for thought! ❤

I prefer the 2009 remaster of Revolver. They’re the original mixes and I like the clarity. While the 2022 mixes are nice there are moments I question. One being the lack of balls on She Said She Said. The guitars are lacking attack like in the original mix. There’s something off. I can’t quite pinpoint it. I don’t hear the cymbals and organ as well. Also the 2009 stereo master of Tomorrow Never Knows is way more powerful IMHO. More vibe. I dig the studio sessions. Love You To acoustic is fabulous as well as the original Rain tempo. Haven’t listened to the new Mono. Always prefer the stereo mixes from Help onward.

I agree 100% as far as she said she said , although I like the separation especially on the drums and vocals, but Ringo's crash cymbals are way down in the mix also the rhythm guitar parts are laid back in the mix for some reason they're not as prominent as the 2009 mix which I think sounds sonically Fuller !
