Norman Maslov

Norman Maslov

My friends call me Mazzy.

This channel is primarily about music and my record collection, however on occasion I will post something on another topic, which may not be of interest to the music or vinyl community. Please read the titles.

Norman Maslov , a native San Franciscan, is an Artist's Agent representing a small group of extremely creative commercial photographers. His agency, Norman Maslov, Agent Internationale was founded in 1986.

Mr. Maslov attended San Francisco State University studying Communications and Film, which led to a strange ten-year stint in the Recording Industry. Starting in retail record stores, he later moved on to promoting and marketing artists for MCA and ABC Records. Mr. Maslov is a passionate music lover, record collector and co-author of the very first travel guide of Beatles sites titled The Beatles' England.

He now lives just north of San Francisco in Seattle. Always snarky, never too serious.

I just got into him and bought two of his albums on vinyl after I got into Rita Coolidge. I've really enjoyed her quite a bit and I heard of Boz. I'm glad I checked out some of his stuff but I don't know much about him. Thank you!

Great show, Maz. I’m a huge Boz fan and have a primo copy of Memphis on vinyl (can’t believe the current price). Saw Boz live in 1977 at William and Mary Hall with Player as the opening act. Keep up the great work.

BOZ wrote Stepping stone for Steve Miller's Children of the future album. It was noted by Booker T. in the 1968 Rolling Stone interview in which the Mgs discussed a variety of records.

I unironically love Bob Dylan's Self Portrait. I know many many people hate it. As a younger fan I wasn't even alive when it came out. So I never had the disappointment of waiting for the next album from my "guru" and getting a bunch of cover songs. Bob was never my guru, just an artist I liked to listen to. I enjoyed his take on "The Great American Songbook". I also liked his "Nashville Skyline Crooner" voice. I typed this pre-emptively. I really like the 3 "Jesus" albums for 2 reasons. I am a Christian and most Christian music is so bad it was nice to have Bob give us 2 and a half albums of it. I understand that non Christians could get sick of it after a couple of albums. BTW I don't go door to door, you don't have to worry about me interrupting your dinner with a door knock :) I also love Moondog Matinee The Bands cover album. A lot of great stuff on it.

I became aware of the Louvin Brothers via Southern Culture on the Skids. Saw them live in Cambridge, Ma and they played "Great Atomic Power" and I thought....What the hell is THAT??!!!!!

I saw Nils doing a solo show just a few years ago. I mean, where else can you see impossibly great guitar playing, an accordion solo, and a tap dancing bit. It was crazy fun.

Pretties for You is a strange, motley collection of songs. I like it a lot though all the tempo and key changes within songs can be exhausting. What do you think of Easy Action, their second album. It’s my favorite because it keeps the psych and weird pop sensibility of Pretties but the songs are tighter.

Appreciate you doing this…I’ll pay more attention to the rest of his catalog. Regarding Silk Degrees…yeah it’s slick but it was out my senior year of high school and had a devout following among the girls I knew…if it was important to them, it was important to me 😉 I’d be happy to see I remastered version come out.

Same iPhone 15 pro but I’m trying different lighting. When I shoot at night I just use a front side ring and keep the rear shelf lights on, turning off the main overhead. And there is no natural light coming in at night. Plus I use cinematic mode on the iPhone to get that depth of field. Just have to be careful that I keep the album centered or within the front light to stay in focus. I like the look. We’ll see how often I can do it. 😎

Interesting to hear some love for Pretties For You. I forced myself to listen to it 2-3 times when I was 17 and that was enough for life. Bob Ezrin needed to enter the picture and introduce a little thing called editing before they’d really shine. 1972 is good one. Nils…will have to check that one out. Brian Jonestown Massacre were great. And Satan is real!

Mazzy! The Brian Jonestown Massacre…great band and glad they got a mention. May I suggest you and anyone else who hasn’t seen it: they have a song called Plan B which i don’t think is on any of their albums but is on KZread and the video with it appears to be a bunch of girls in San Fransisco c1967 and it sounds, to me at least, perfectly set as if it was a 1967 piece of music….find it on KZread and see what you think

Satan is real, yo! Great book titled same written by Charlie Louvin in the 2000s. Cover to that album made even more amazing when you find out those flames are made of real fire and Satan statue is 16-ft likeness that the boys built out of plywood themselves. At some point, if memory serves, Ira Louvin gets shot six times by his wife after he tries to strangle her with telephone cord. Praise the Lord! Yahooooozah!

Saw most of those shows, but in LA. Unintentionally saw Sabbath 3 times. Wanted to see Wild Turkey. Super live shows. Was very odd to see Yes do a 30 minute set before the BS boys, and then come back in a year or two with an incredible Close to the Edge tour.

I saw/heard Nils Lofgren perform at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago (circa 1974). At one point he was playing guitar and piano simultaneously. At another point he ran up to the wall and did a back flip while playing guitar. An incredible musician and showman.

Full respect Mazzy! As a Brit now living in NZ you nailed it. Always love your perspectives and deep knowledge. God help you (and your removal men) if you ever move house. And loving The Smiths reference behind you. Britain's greatest band (perhaps you need to be a bookish native of those windswept Isles to REALLY "get them"?) Anyways, love your work. It's an education. Thank you from, (originally The Home Counties),and now Aotearoa. If ever you visit, let's grab a beer!!
