I’m literally listening to it for the first time after reading Paul’s comments on the half speed master. I’m enjoying this very much, it evokes sunny 1970s summers and it’s got a great feel, god I bet we all miss those days compared to 2022.

I discovered this album by accident in around ‘84 (age 15) thinking I already owned all McCartney’s albums. I thought it was great - truly a lost gem and unlike anything else in his catalogue. Snapped up the Wings 71-73 archive box when it was released and have recently had the 50th anniversary half-speed master on high rotation. Great to see it finally getting some love.

I've always had a soft spot for a runt of a litter and Wild Life falls into that brief. I love the production of the album and it doesn't shout the 1970s as much as Band On The Run, Venus And Mars, Speed Of Sound and, London Town though I do like those records. Probably my most played Wings album is Back To The Egg and that was equally dismissed and panned by the critics back in 79, but I Iove it and it's never gotten old and overplayed like Band on The Run. Back To The Egg is a little more produced in some areas than Wild Life but the slightly more raw sound of it overall really appeals to me.

Hey Mazzy, I am a huge Wings fan. I am so glad you did this nice video on this great, humble little album by the group. Such a thoughtful commentary to all of the songs and the insights into Paul's outlook on his life and career at this point in time. Great observation about Linda's vocals on this album too. Wild Life is very organic and that is one of its strengths. I bought the CD two-disc rerelease with the 17-track second disc but that deluxe box set is really something (thanks for showing that!!!). Hope you will do a video on all of the Wings albums.

Mumbo and Bip Bop are two great tracks. Love is Strange is a gorgeous cover. Wild Life evokes hot summers. Some People Never Know is beautiful and brilliant. I Am Your Singer is a pleasant duet, probably the weakest track on the album. Tomorrow could have been a hit single and Dear Friend is a tasteful admonishment. This is a great album, then. Unpretentious, refreshing, feel good music.

I always loved when Macca went for a less ambitious approach in terms of production. His "lo-fi"/"indie" records all have that charmingly homey vibe. "Red Rose Speedway" apart from "My Love", which got the hit single treatment, also falls in the same category. It's too bad critics at the time didn't get it and the wannabe cool crowd followed in their misjudgement.

I admit I was really just a casual Beatles fan until my college band performed a McCartney marching show in 2003. Now I am an incredibly biased Paul McCartney fan, lol. I love his songwriting of course but he is also my favorite singer of all time. Some people just don’t “get” Paul or vibe with his music and that’s totally cool. But I think the many people that do vibe with him will agree with me that once he digs his talons into your heart you really never want him to let go. There’s just something about this genius dork of a man who can write the most beautiful melodies while saying “And this one’s about my dog.” LOL. While I don’t love every single song he’s ever written or recorded (there are over 700!) I do find a ton of merit in his approach. He simply loves creating and playing music. He’s made millions of people happier for the last 60 years. He’s inspired countless musicians with his creativity. He’s not afraid to try anything. Nobody is perfect and he doesn’t pretend to be, but his general musicality never fails to blow me away. I just love his many voices, his melodic structures, his uplifting tendencies, his piano/guitar/bass playing… the man has a lovable vibe and he just endears himself to me no matter what era I’m listening to. Maybe because I’m a woman I enjoy both the silly and sappy love songs… I think they’re beautiful. I am vehemently against the idea that songs have to have some kind of profound psychological message to have any worth. I used to have somewhat mixed feelings about the Wildlife album but I keep comparing it to all his other albums which is unfair because it’s pretty unique. I actually like all the songs except “Bip Bop”… if they’d replaced that one with “Little Lamb Dragonfly” I think this would equal Ram as my favorite Paul album. “Some People Never Know” is a damn masterpiece. I challenge anyone to feel nothing when listening to that song!

Are you crazy, that album sucks. But it didn’t for me. I have it on Viynl and Cd. Wore out several tapes. Excellent video Mazzy. Enjoyed it 👍 Oh ya! I had to go play the Love is strange song on that album. Its been a while and I still love it. Thanks for making me play that one. Going off topic slightly. Have you heard Mark Lindsay and Susan Cowsill sing that a couple years ago. They did a great job. Actually the whole album is good. The name of the album is Love is Strange. They also did a great version of Baby Don’t Go.

Wonderfully articulated defense of what is easily Macca's most underrated album, in my opinion. While it's true that my personal faves, like a lot of people, are Band, Ram and Venus, I also love Wild Life (and McCartney) for completely different reasons, and I agree that those two albums do hold up better. Band and Venus definitely sound like the 70's, but Wild Life and McCartney could've been recorded yesterday, as far as I'm concerned. It's funny...."Some People Never Know" is way longer than "My Love", but it sure doesn't feel as long haha. Overlooked gem of a song. Red Rose Speedway is the one that I struggle with (although Big Barn Bed is maybe his best album opener), but the rest of it is yah....pretty meh. Thanks for showing all that other stuff too! Wild Life is in my Top 5 Macca records for sure.....gonna spin it now 👍 ~ Bobby B

Of Paul's post Beatles work, Band on the Run is my favorite with Wild Life next. In the Beatles, I'm not sure who's contribution I like best because all 4 of them made excellent contributions to the band. Paul has his quirks and ego and whatnot, but of their post Beatles contributions, I like Paul's the best. I like both Mumbo and Bip Bop. Not profound, but who says rock has to be. Bip Bop in particular for me is just a fun song that rocks and sounds good. Kind of like Hanky Panky by Tommy James and the Shondells. However I disagree with you about Mamunia! I love that Paul cares about nature and the environment and writes songs about it. I love the sentiment in Mamunia, which to me is get out and experience nature, in this case rain, which I love to do! It is my favorite post-Beatles Paul song. I'm guessing the Beatles' rooftop concert was partly inspired by the Jefferson Airplane's 1 song rooftop concert in NYC. I thought it was really cool that Paul repeated this with Letterman in NY a number of years later. I don't necessarily consider a number of songs Paul wrote having as much meaning as say John or Bob Dylan. However, he wrote some very beautiful stuff and is one heck of a musician/bassist.

After I watched this last night I listened to the album again. I remember when I first bought this back in the early ‘70’s I hated it. But surprisingly, I still have the original vinyl record. Here’s a few of my thoughts: 1. Great front cover; abysmal back cover. 2. My two least favorite songs are the first two: Mumbo and Bip Bop 3. Eliminate Mumbo completely and start side one with Wild Life, followed by I Am Your Singer, Bip Bop and end with Some People Never Know. That, for me, would make a real good side one. Then side two should be Dear Friend, Tomorrow, Love is Strange, and end with When the Wind is Blowing (a soft, mellow song from the Wild Life Archive Edition). With a little shuffling, there’s a real good album in there that might have been pleasing to more of his fans. 4. On the back cover, place a halfway decent photo of the band working in the studio.

Tomorrow definitely has the same vibe as RAM to me, it's a cool track. Could have fit on that album. The rest of this has its own unique sound and I do like the boldness--yes I love Mumbo! It's almost like a blend between McCartney and RAM, it just doesn't have that one big classic track to anchor it like those two do (Maybe I'm Amazed, Uncle Albert, etc.). Still it's a cool indie record, I just feel like it's missing that one "essential" Paul single on it to anchor the rest of the weirdness. Get on the Right Thing was a good leftover from Ram that probably should have gone on this LP, and I like throwing that into my Wildlife playlist as track #2.

I see what he was trying to do after the Beatles got into ground-breaking arenas of musical production with reverse recording, and all the masterful orchestration by the true "fifth Beatle" George Martin who DOES NOT get the recognition he deserved for recording and production of rock music!! Paul was going "Back the the Egg" but the problem I believe was he was still broken hearted and feeling uncertain of whether he could build a separate musical identity after the greatest rock band the world had ever seen!! BIG SHOES TO FILL!! He was searching for an identity while still feeling tremendously hurt, and even betrayed!! I think RAM was a complete success as far as setting himself beyond the Beatles even though a lot of that stuff was meant for Beatle albums as was a lot of material for Lennon's Imagine" and Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" RAM, for me, is his true masterpiece!! That is a songwriter's absolute masterpiece this for me is Paul's Magnum Opus!! Wildlife just feels like Paul crying in his beer for 37 minutes and 43 tortuous seconds!! LOL! I also did not like McCartney II when it came out, but it's one of my favorites today, so anything is possible I suppose!! Jack ~'()'~

not a masterpiece, but knowing the infamous critics it always had, I recognize that it surprised me positively, Ram and wild life are much better that whay the critics say... stupid critics who maybe wanted a new sgt pepper or a new abbey road, or simply made Paul guilty of the breakout of the beatles and never forgave him... particularly RAM is a great LP. In retrospective, it could be called "the Grandpa of alternative pop/rock".

Hello Mazzy, I was a teenager in the 80s so I was wandering if you bought records in the 80s and what did you buy as an adult. As a teenager I bought the record of Don Johnson and Gloria Estefan. 😊 For instance. I'm guilty. Kind regards.

4 copies! That's dedicated. My Oz copy has the same label as the UK one. Ram and Wild Life are cut from the same cloth. I have always thought that. They are both wildly (scuse the pun) misunderstood records. As to Mumbo being proto-punk, well I'm not completely sure, but I'm prone to make such grand statements myself so I'll go with it. Haha. The title track is amazing. One can tell you have a lot of passion for this record. Btw: I'm one of those people who think that Band on the Run is overrated. I know, controversial but some of it strikes me as easy and trite. None of the sophistication of the Back Seat of My Car, Long-Haired Lady or Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. What a classy bastard.

Sorry Max, I can’t agree with you on your rating of Wildlife. In general I like your taste and insights, and enjoy your videos. I’m a true Beatles fan from the 60’s. I really like most of the solo work of John and Paul. The first McCartney album and Ram are my 2 favorites by Paul (maybe it’s because they are the most Beatle sounding). I didn’t care for Wildlife at all when it was first released. But I just listened to the entire album before rewatching your review video of Wildlife since I know you love it. I love McCartney and Ram LPs because they have great Paul songs with great melodies that you can always hum to and remember. Much like all the Beatles songs. But this is not true at all for Wildlife. Maybe 2-3 songs will rank in the 2nd third of all of Paul’s songs. I do agree with you that the whole album is low-fi, well produced, well performed and sounds decent. But I would never remember any of the songs or their titles. The first 2 are jams that are ok to listen to. The following “songs” have weak Melodies and forgettable lyrics. I only liked Some People Never Know and could listen to it twice. Dear Friend has some potential and some good moments. The original Love is Strange has a better feel than Paul’s cover. Overall, this album has weak material compared to Paul’s good songs.

I bought it in 1973 for 99p and I loved the album. There is always quality in his releases and as you say some albums that are lauded are not perfect and contain some poor songs

Critics hated Paul for breaking up the Beatles, that's why almost everything that he did during that period of time was trashed.

I've always been kind of in the middle about Wild Life. "Masterpiece" I think is an overstatement, but it's also not nearly the train wreck that it's generally made out to be. It's main weakness is actually its primary intent: it's deliberately unpolished and not really quite thought out spur of the moment stuff. It sounds kind of like a demo tape of songs Paul was working on, that could have become great with a little more effort, or perhaps if John had been around to pitch in some ideas. So listening to it I'm constantly thinking, hey this is a pretty good song, followed pretty quickly by the realization that it doesn't quite work. More what you'd expect from a promising young talent than the seasoned professional that Paul was at this point. But I also get it that this is on purpose. His first three records were all exercises in deliberate anti-Beatleness, and that's part of their charm. But for me, it's Red Rose Speedway that's the hidden masterpiece.

Not a Masterpiece. Some hidden gems. Dear Friend , Some People Never Know, Tomorrow. Wildlife title track is pretty cool. Album often overlooked. RAM is Superior. Band on the RUN as Well. I love Paul early work after Beatles. Actually all of them did really well.

Wild life is my least favourite post Beatles Paul album. I can see what he was doing, what he was going for but ultimately were left with an album that is low on quality, yes, perfectly charming but every Wings album after this is a marked improvement for me.
