Paul McCartney Rockestra Documentary Special 1978 RARE

Paul McCartney & Friends - Rockestra Documentary Special [Abbey Studios '78] Musicians: Denny Laine, Laurence Juber, David Gilmour, Hank Marvin, Pete Townshend, Steve Holley, John Bonham, Kenney Jones, Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, Ronnie Lane, Bruce Thomas, Gary Brooker, Linda McCartney, Tony Ashton, Speedy Acquaye, Tony Carr, Ray Cooper, Morris Pert, Howie Casey, Tony Dorsey, Steve Howard, Thaddeus Richard.
It was 34 years ago today (October 3rd, 1978) that Paul McCartney assembled Rockestra -- the largest group of rock legends to record together up to that date. The cream of the rock elite joined Wings to record two tracks for their upcoming Back To The Egg album that day at London's Abbey Road Studios for the instrumental "Rockestra Theme" and "So Glad To See You Here." Rockestra consisted of the Who's Pete Townshend and Kenney Jones, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Procol Harum's Gary Brooker, the Faces' Ronnie Lane, the Attractions' Bruce Thomas, and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and John Bonham, among others.
Among those invited that couldn't make the session were Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. Keith Moon had been asked to participate but had died less than a month before.
Despite "Rockestra Theme" being a guitar-based riff, Wings guitarist Laurence Juber recalled that McCartney often had guitarists shy away from their more obvious blues-inspired lead work while in Wings: "Where Paul wouldn't really go was into that kind of extended bluesy lead guitar solo. Now he'll go there more readily as part of the stage show; but then -- I won't say that it was an area not to go, but it was an area to maybe hint at. Y'know, so I needed to be inventive. And he drove me to be inventive."
The day after the supergroup session, McCartney, wife Linda McCartney, and Wings co-founder Denny Laine returned to Abbey Road to fine tune the tracks and add vocals to "So Glad To See You Here."
Rockestra performed together only once, when most of the players regrouped on December 29th, 1979 at the closing night of The Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea benefit at London's Hammersmith Odeon. The group joined Wings at the end of their set and performed Little Richard's "Lucille," "Let It Be," and two versions of "Rockestra Theme."

I love how when Paul gets on the piano everyone stops to see what he’s doing
only Paul could bring so many big names of rock
Priceless document. Major members of Who, Zeppelin, Floyd & Beatles in one room together. The original source videotape for this needs to be obtained & restored, reprinted etc., and made available.

While he is demonstrating the piano parts holy shit you can hear the music of every instrument exploding out of his brain because you can tell that he hears the one complete and full inside his brain and what we hear is most likely exactly what he heard in his head. What an amazing composer and artist.

It's the Magic that he's tuned into ~ It shows him the way ~ he is a sensitive instrument ~ both receptive to the channel he ought to be ~ and responsive to it ~ that's the inspiration and the perspiration ~ I suppose the genius that he has is that he knows where, when and how to listen and hear and then to run with it ~ that and having the faith to know that the rest will come to him or work itself out over the course of composing it...

You know McCartney is some kind of superstar when he can get Pete Townsend out of his bed in the morning and down to Abbey road ⭐🎹🎸🎺🎷🎶
That piano part on itself is already so original, inventive and rich. It shows how Paul's musical imagination was able to drive Beatles' music to great heights.
Effin' brilliant genius just love the guy long live McCartney!!!!
I would have been a nervous wreck, with soooo many musicians in one room, sooo many legends among them, even being a legend myself... Kudos to Paul for remaining so calm, explaining everything to everyone while always keeping the mood up. Well done!

@@michaelfrazia4569 IMO it had more to do with his voice deepening by his 40’s. It’s a trade off as singers age but they often gain a richness in their tone. Listen to his vocals on the Unplugged cd/video from 1991. The songs require a lower register and he sounds great. I think it was the touring years that followed in which he pushed himself to sing in the same key as he did in his 20’s that really took a toll on his voice.

@@kentlewis987 agree...if you listen to wings 79 live he still hits the notes and he still has his youthful rasp...I think he sounded worse on the 89 tour than the 93 tour because he did more taxing songs and he hadn't had his voice in tour shape in a decade...he's my favorite artist ever so i don't care if he ages...I still liked his albums after his voice aged...I just think his voice was the key component in the past where now he succeeds despite his voice....the unplugged was good , but if you listen to the we can work it out from it vs the original you really hear the difference...again artists age..its to be expected. his voice is the first thing that captured my attention as basically a toddler in the mid 70s....you nailed it overall...good observation...he def sounded better on the unplugged vs the tripping the live fantastic tour...his voice took a beating on that tour

So many memories... back in early 79 (I'd started listening to Zeppelin about two years prior, Beatle/Paul maniac since 69) a neighbor/friend of mine told me Paul had put this together for "some charity thing" (he read it in some imported magazine or something), and I vividly recall telling him "Bonzo and Jonesy playing with Paul?? noooo waaaaaaaay!!" This friend was actually quite a big Who fan, and he said "Townsend is in it as well you know" :P I didn't actually see the live performance on TV until maybe mid 1980, but I do remember the utter joy and wonder I felt and how massively proud I was of Paul! "thats our lad!" :D :P

This magnificent rambling, almost a 12 bar blues line repeating at times, with a random improvisational hook thrown in to keep it mixed up a bit, shows McCartney's pure genius qualities, as a multitalented, and truly the complete consummated musician. There is no one else even remotely like him. He is always creating something new. [Also the sign of a left handed genius artist.]

It's interesting. This is how the pros do it .. It's a process the public don't see - endless rehearsals, learning parts, false starts, working out the problems to get what we eventually hear on vinyl. I remember Rockestra theme coming out in '79. It wasn't a major moment in rock but it was a decent go at bringing together a lot of disparate elements.
Brilliant

MPL needs to release this with great image quality and sound. It was filmed in 35mm and recorded at Abbey Road, so it won't be hard. "Back to the Egg" is actually a great album, with a serious sequencing problem. It ends with "So Glad to see you here", when it should OPEN with it, obviously, and end the album with the crashing "Rockestra" chord. Could Macca think of releasing an edited version? Maybe
