The self titled album is one I suggest you give a closer listen to. “Your Love Is Forever” is one of his most beautiful and complex melodies he’s ever written. It can easily slide by without noticing. “Love Comes To Everyone” is also a lovely, upbeat song with great guitar. “Blow Away” is among his best pop songs ever. There’s not a bad song on the album. It’s also one of the best produced, sounding albums. It doesn’t have that muddy midrange heavy sound of his other 70s albums. Give it a deeper listen.

@@ismaelbonaso5814 I just listened recently and I just love that album. It’s very confusing to me that people don’t recognize what an outstanding GH album it is. It’s certainly his best 70s album besides ATMP. It’s also a great sounding record with a warm mix, great arrangements and production. How do you feel about the Jeff Lynne albums? To my ears they’re overproduced; so much so they feel like Jeff Lynne albums more than George Harrison albums.

I’d put 33&1/3rd really close to the top of my personal ranking. Passionately love that one! Great ranking! Fingers crossed for that ATMP super deluxe!

I cannot believe you listed key songs from "All Things Must Pass" but omitted what I believe is Harrison's best song of all-time, "Isn't It A Pity". It ranks right up there with the top songs of all-time by any artist.

Be nice to see several of George’s albums released in the super deluxe boxset format

Also love "Brainwashed".It doesn't matter at all that "Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" is a cover,it's one of the highlights on the album.

I’m so thankful for the recording of George singing and playing Devil in the Deep Blue Sea. It captures his heart in such a visceral way. It’s lovely and charming. You hear his love for great songs in every note.

Personally I'd have Brainwashed at number two. I've always loved the way the title track ends. Sounds like you are listening to George's soul descending to heaven.

Thank you, Andrew! Your review of George's albums was enjoyable and insightful. I agree that Living In The Material World should be right behind All Things Must Pass. It is such a beautiful and passionate album. I would love to see you review the Concert For Bangla Desh album. Released in 1971 (as well as the film from 1972) which were compiled from the two shows at Madison Square Gardens on August 1, 1971. It was such a star-studded performance. It is a shame that this has not had a new release in over 30 years.

George’s voice for me told stories when he sang he had emotion in his voice I liked his voice he did not have a poppy singing voice it took me to places in my head I’m not ranking his albums as there where songs on all eleven albums I really enjoyed I have to say all things must pass tends to be in my head a lot and my sweet lord a missed man thanks george and thanks Andrew for this countdown

great segment, George has been my favorite ex for a while, but it wasn't always that way...when I was old enough to buy my own music around 1976, I would buy Paul and George albums upon release. Paul was my hero then, but it didn't take long, comparing contemporary releases like 33and a third vs. At the Speed of sound or the eponymous George Harrison vs. London town to realize George was writing music that resonated with me a lot more. His music, part and parcel with his guitar playing, is very unique, subtle, and not to everyone's taste. His solo ballads are often overlooked "Learning how to love you", "tired of midnight blue", "Your love is forever", "unknown delight", "never get over you" , "mystical one" are great songs! I loved "Dream away" the first time I heard it in "Time Bandits",(great George produced movie), before the album came out in '82!

That was enjoyable, thanks. I actually love the Apple Jam tracks on ATMP, and just wish those sessions had been filmed so that we could watch all those talented people playing together.

Great video. I really don't understand why everyone hates Extra Texture. I think it's a wonderful album, and it's probably my second favorite George Harrison album. I also like Dark Horse. Far East Man is just a beautiful song.

You've done it again! Enjoyable, concise and well spoken. For me, since you included his first two albums, you might as well have included both the Wilburys albums since he was involved in every song on those. I'm guessing we're going to have a very long wait before you get to Ringo's ranking. :) He's released almost as many studio albums as Paul - Ringo has about 21, Paul has roughly 25 (not counting his classical or electronica work).

All Things Must Pass is my favorite solo Beatles album . And the best album of the 70's

Enjoyed your accurate assessment of his catalog.

Gone Troppo and Somewhere in England will always have a special place in my heart, as they were two of the first solo Beatles albums I heard when I was in my early teens, along with Macca's Pipes Of Peace. A really thorough George compilation with some deeper cuts is well overdue, not just rehashing the same old chestnuts - great as they are. How about "Someplace Else" or "Dear One" for starters? What lesser known tracks would other fans put on a double cd compilation of new remixes? Hare Krishna ✌

Another good video Andrew and I generally agree your rankings as someone else has said just discovered the song Your love is for ever which is beautiful. Also can recommend an excellent biog of George by Graeme Thomson Behind that locked door

Another great video Andrew have to be honest i dont really know his solo work just the 2 lps that i know ATMP and Cloud 9 but i do really like What Is Life and Someplace Else and a bit of a soft spot for Shanghai Surprise i know it wasnt on Cloud 9 but it was on the cd. Hello Andrew! I'd like to hear what Dhani and Jeff Lynne could do with the self-titled George Harrison album. It's a treasure trove, mostly underrated with lovely songs on it. Lynne's crystalline production could really make this gem sparkle. Can you imagine this record sounding as good as Cloud Nine?

His self-titled 1979 album is underrated,it had a few very enjoyable tracks on it like "Faster","Blow Away" and "Dark Sweet Lady".

For me cloud nine has always been my favourite George album I think it’s filled with so many good songs which are all catchy and I think the self titled George Harrison is an album which is underrated

Great fun watching this Video. I agree with most comments and the ranking as well! The only difference is that I think Cloud 9 is number 2 and possibly "Brainwashed" is behind the "George Harrison" album. Then some great singles and extras, like the 3 new songs on the 1989 "Dark Horse" compilation and "Bangladesh" could be worth mentioning as well.

Mine too,of a similar age that is,with Cloud Nine(I was fifteen in 1987).

Nice review, as time passes I think George's albums keep revealing more, I'm glad that you liked so many of them. For me the Self title George Harrison album is a real gem though and it fights with ATMP for the top spot although I never really can say it's the greatest. However, it has a stillness and beauty about it and the care George takes with that album just fills it with love. Love Comes to Everyone just sparkles, Soft Hearted Hanna is one of his most inventive, Your Love is Forever is one of his most spiritual songs. There is space and deep contentment on this album. You rank Gone Troppo quite high which I appreciate because it is often put down and again I think it is a really well made album, it's fun and good to listen to. the doo wop " I really Love You" is George being playful and off the Wall, if that wasn't in his catalogue something would be seriously missing. Circles is a really good song but it's weird as it's a pretty sad song ending a playful album. Dark Horse has grown on me, I like it more than Extra Texture. Also love that you appreciate Someshere in England, which also often gets a bad rap. I love that he does those two Hoagy Charmichael songs on that. But a good album all up. George had a very good solo career. Love Brainwashed, strangely I feel I still don't fully appreciate Living in the Material World.

I really appreciate your ranking because it feels like you have come to your opinions quite independently by just listening to the albums a lot and letting them reveal what they have to you. A lot of rankings seem to me be driven by what people think is critically proper and quite often they haven't lived with the albums that much or tried to see past the original critical assessment.

Nice synchronicity Andrew, I was just listening to the 1979 eponymous album this afternoon. I must admit I come and go a bit with George's solo work. I decided a while back that Somewhere in England is his worst by some margin. That's not including Electronic Sound btw!

@@AndrewDixonMusic I'm the opposite, I used to like it a lot more than I do now. It was the first George LP I heard after 'discovering' him with Cloud 9. To my ears now it largely sounds like an album he's making in his sleep. Maybe I'll come round to it again, Probably be my favourite this time next year, lol.

I don't think many George fans will argue with your choices. I would probably push "Dark Horse" up a bit , but that's due to personal reasons. When I first bought the album, like George I was going through a break-up 🎻 and I related to some of the sad songs on there. So I played it a lot and it helped with the pain, although I too prefer a happy George. But, hey, we must have contrasts now and then 🕉

Would LOVE to have a compilation album of the songs that were never released on an album : Mo, Ride Rajbun, Going Down to Golders Green, Gopala Krishna, him singing Get Back & am sure more !

Nice video! In the album "live in Japan" there are some songs that i prefer the live performance than the studio one,ex:Cheer down,my sweet Lord,something..

For George's solo albums, All Things Must Pass is always going to be number 1, then I'd probably put either Cloud 9 or 33 1/3 2nd, it's really hard for me to pick between those 2 so they'd be 2nd and 3rd but it'd depend on the day which was which. Dark Horse would be 4th, I know it's not considered his best work but it's just an album I really enjoy listening to. In 5th place would be Extra Texture, again not highly regarded by most, but it was the album that took longer for me to get a copy of so I didn't hear it until I was around 15 and it just sat perfectly with my moody teenage self trying to work the world out. From there I'd probably lump Living In The Material World, Somewhere In England, Gone Troppo and Brainwashed all in together from 6-9, all great albums but I didn't quite connect with them as much as the higher ranked albums but enjoyed more than the lower ranked albums. 10th would be Wonderwall Music, some really great stuff on there and I love the production style George went with. Perhaps the most controversial choice here, but I'd put Electronic Sound 11th, I'm a Doctor Who fan so it just sort of reminds me of the background music from the classic series, maybe someone should use it as background music for a sci-fi movie. That leaves self titled in 12th place, and I'm not suggesting in any way that it's a bad album at all, as you say it is very nice, there's some great songs on there but I just found it a bit dull overall compared to his other records, it's all sort of the same kind of sound, same kind of mood, the only thing I really don't like about it though is the version of Not Guilty which maybe I'd have enjoyed more had I not heard The Beatles version which I think is amazing and don't see why it wasn't on The White Album, but even so, the "worst" George Harrison album will always be better than a lot of other artist's best work.

Andrew well done. I'd be curious to match your Ranking against the Unit Sales of each offering...

Thank you for this video. Your rankings are very similar to mine. Thoughts on “Cheer Down” ? That single came out in the Cloud 9 era and part if the Lethal Weapon 2 soundtrack. Loved that song.

Cheer Down is one of my favourites too.George's acerbic wit really comes to the fore here.

George Harrison's "George Harrison" album from 1979 was also a "nice" album since at that time,he was happy with his life and it showed.He was happily married to Olivia and Dhani had been born the year before.

Any chance you could do a similar style video but for all the singles and bonus tracks that George released, such as Cheer Down, Poor Little Girl, Flying Hour and Sat Singing? I'd love to see your take on them as personally some of my favourite tracks of his, a shame that some never got an official release and most never got a physical release

great video, always enjoy listening to your point of view. I am not sure who would fail to put ATMP at the top, but I am sure there is someone. I would have had Cloud 9 at number 2 and George Harrison at number 3 with Brainwashed and Living in the material at 4 and 5. just as an aside had to think whether "Save the World" is cheerful lol, reminds me of the bonus track on 331/3 "Tears of the World" which is a brilliant track. George incidentally donated Save the World to the Greenpeace album in 81. I also think the three tracks on Best of Darkhorse that never made it to an album, Cheer Down, Poor Little Girl and the exceptional Cockamamie Business are very much undervalued tracks or indeed unknow by some!

@@AndrewDixonMusic Absolutely agree (with Mark Ransome, too). When the LP collection came out I was amazed to see that these great songs were neglected. They're among his best. And the solo on Cheer Down sounds like a duet of two guitars (call-and-response-like), but it's George duetting with himself. Breathtaking.

With "Got My Mind Set On You" from Cloud Nine,his sense of humour was on display in it's video clip where he suddenly gets up out of the chair and starts dancing and leap-frogging around the room,then it cuts to the next scene where he's sitting in the chair strumming on his guitar with a wry look on his face,saying-"Did you really think that was me,dancing around the room like that?Me?Dancing?"when it was a stunt double. He also made two video clips for this,one more bizarre than the other.

Wonderwall was produced and written by George and its probably his second best. I dont listen to material world or 33 1/3 much but I still listen to Wonderwall and ATMP.

I play "Devil And The Deep Blue Sea" nearly every day.

Our top three is almost the same. I would have Brainwashed as no two. But Material World is an overlooked gem. So many fine songs. Electronic Sounds is unlistenable, but Wonder Wall is very interesting.

Nice video! I'd rank them 1. ATMP 2. Material World 3. Cloud 9 4. George Harrison 5. 33 1/3 6. Brainwashed ... I have those well above the rest.

"Cloud Nine" is a personal favourite of mine,he really seemed to be enjoying making music again and it showed. The same with his involvement with "The Travelling Wilburys".

Brainwashed has a doco with Dhani & Jeff Lynne tells you a lot about all your questions. It's fantastic. x

Great ranking video, I agree with most of your choices. Dark Horse has some good songs on it but not a favorite of mine.

I love the song I’d you have you anytime! Classic. Have you considered doing a video on your favorite soundtracks? I’m interested to know!

After seeing this episode a few George lps I have to get! Mr Dixon I do have a Beatle question though. I have a sealed US Yellow Submarine first pressing with a hole punched in the corner. Is it unusual to find a Beatles first pressing with the hole punch??

I don't know much about this hole punch thing but seem to remember reading once that it was some record store method of identifying records that could only be sold on a non returnable basis. I guess they didn't realise or care how annoying this would be to collectors later!

My next favorite album is going to be the album called 33 1/3 it’s a really good album I would have to agree with you Andrew what a great few track openings with songs like woman don’t you cry for me, dear one, beautiful girl I especially love the chorus of the song where there are different time signatures on that one and it goes into 44. this song is a really good one which shows the humor that he had even though it had to deal with the lawsuit with my sweet lord versus he’s so fine lawsuit. it’s a really good album and I really love the bonus track on the CD call tears of the world which could’ve been on the album it could’ve had 11 songs as opposed to 10. I really love the fact that the remastered albums from 1976 to 1992 is remastered and it sounds really good. I even love this song Pierce milky which has to deal with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles which is my all-time favorite one of my favorite Motown groups ever. The next album would have to be cloud nine I think George Harrison sounds really good his voice is in great shape as opposed to the song Darkhorse which I heard off of the very best of George Harrison. The production is really good I am a huge Jeff Lynne and ELO fan and got my mind set on you I think it’s one of the best songs that he’s done even though it’s a cover song. I really love the song on cloud nine a great guitar playing I think it’s done by Eric Clapton I believe and I love the fact that his voice is really good and the traveling all very similar songs I’ve heard are fantastic. I really love the song is just for today it gives it a nice slow paced and I love the voices during the end from left to right it pans on the song devils radio it’s a good album. I will be including Aaliyah’s album of his which is really fantastic live in Japan that is a really good album I love it, because of the fact that you get to hear George Harrison and Eric Clapton playing guitar together it’s a good album. if I have to pick the highlights for me the whole album is good, but I think the song something is really good, and give me love give me peace on earth is really great. and also isn’t it a pity which is really good and I love George Harrison and Eric Clapton doing while my guitar gently weeps his vocal sound really strong and he’s loosened up in that and I love at the end of the song where George Harrison says Eric Clapton psycho guitar. and I also love the fact that when George Harrison starts playing all the Beatles song the Japanese audience goes crazy especially on here comes the sun which is great. And the closing song rollover Beethoven which is great too even though it’s a cover originally by Chuck Berry and it’s a really good album. another thing that I love is at the beginning of the song Taxman you actually get to hear the two Beatles counting from the recording of taxman which is Paul McCartney and I think George Harrison before the band starts playing it, and I also love the fact that you get to have lyrics which was never on the original album I think those are original handwritten lyrics which was not used on the final versions of taxman and piggies.Of course my number one favorite album would have to be all things must Pass what an amazing debut a solo debut for any beetle to have so much music even kept up for all these years a huge backlog of songs which is amazing I am a huge huge Phil Spector fan I love the wall of sound production I could listen to feel specters productions are they in the freaking tired of them. I don’t think there is a bad song on t is not. Every song is good, and what’s interesting is that when Phil Spector heard all the demos he thought himself that all the songs were good which is saying something.

By the way Andrew, as you said you left out the 'Concert For Bangladesh' and the1992 live album-if you had included both of them in your ratings where would they have have fitted?

Besides all things must Pass the only albums I’m familiar with by George is the lighter album so dark horse albums. The only albums I’m from Maryland you’re with besides all things must Pass are the albums that he released from 1979 to1991. The album that is going to be for me in the bottom of the lower ranking would have to be the album gone trout though it’s a really good album in my life and although it should have more songs on it. I love the demo version of mystical one which is on the bonus track of the dark horse years box set. I love how in the demo version you get to hear George Harrison asking his wife Olivia for a paper and a pen and he starts writing a song mystical one which is really amazing I love it it’s a good song all the songs are good and I wish there was more songs on it. The next song is going to be somewhere in England I love the fact that George Harrison got a round to recording the song circles and that’s a really good song. it would’ve been great had the Beatles recorded from the white album even no it’s part of the demo songs from the White album part of the white album super deluxe box set.The whole album is really good. And my next favorite album would have to be the George Harrison self-titled album it’s a really good album and I’m also glad that George Harrison decided to do this song not guilty even though the Beatles record it at 102 tanks which I got never released. I love both versions the Beatles version and the George Harrison version of not guilty. I think blow away is good faster is really good and down it’s a really good album.

Hi Andrew...i have been wanting to get in touch for a while. With regards to the George Harrison albums...you really are missing out on a big area of his career...and that is his collaborations with Ravi Shankar. He was really focused during the making of these albums and they all really shine. I notice you like Wonderwall...which makes me think you may like them. For example...around '71 he was producing the soundtrack and editing the movie Ravi.. which is superb. I would highly recommend the 3 album Collaborations boxset along with Tana Mana. I listen to these 4 album as much as any Beatles/Solo work ! Dhani and Olivia made a great job of this wonderful boxset. Listening to these may take you off on a new musical journey.. and help understand the spirit and complexity of George's character. Hang on in there with George's solo albums too....the slower songs end up being the most rewarding! Best Wishes, Julian

Hi... i have also become a bit of a Macca 80s obsessive over the last few years....i managed to get a 6cd boxset of all his 80s singles, extended remixes b-sides etc etc... just awesome... They really did miss too much off the Flowers in the Dirt boxset content wise... Bob Clearmountain remixes of the singles are brilliant... let's hope they do a 'Press to Play' boxset!

Living in the Material World is the most emotional album by any of the 4 Beatles... I love it!!!

Hardly agree with you at all, but that's the fun of things like this. 1. ATMP 2. Extra Texture -- Atmospheric and soulful 3. 33 and 1/3 -- George at his most buoyant. 4. Cloud Nine -- Like Dylan with "Blood on the Tracks", George suddenly has a renewed sense of purpose 5. Brainwashed -- AKA Cloud Nine , Part 2. 6. Dark Horse -- There are some under-performers here, but there's also the bouncy "Maya Love", the sly title track, and the gorgeous "So Sad". 7. Wonderwall -- Quirky and fun 8. Material World -- "Don't Let Me Wait too Long", and the lovely "That is All" stand out. The rest is self-indulgent preaching. 9. George Harrison -- AKA "In a Coma". Only "Your Love is Forever" differentiates itself from the surrounding boring mush. 10 Somewhere in England -- ZZZZZZ 11. Gone Troppo -- The anonymous last leg of the "Who Cares?" trilogy. 12. Electronic Sound -- More unlistenable than "Two Virgins". Quite a feat! 3 and 1/2 -- The debut LP by Splinter -- George is all over the record.

Where might you have placed Live in Japan and The Concert for Bangladesh if you had included them in your rankings?

Live In Japan would likely have been above Extra Texture but not much higher. I think the songs where George is "feeling it" are brilliant, but only highlights just how much he was going through the motions in some of the other songs. I don't yet know Concert For Bangladesh well enough to rank it, but I'd love a big 50th anniversary release of it!

I like Extra Texture and 331/3, which I got for Christmas in 1976 from Mom and Dad. As you point out, most George LPs don't stand up song for song, including the ones I mention, but there is enough on these two to keep me interested enough to now and then grab and listen to on a car drive. Even All Things Must Pass sags a bit sometimes, but I will get the remix, and hope they offer a version without the LP jam, which has to be one of the least listened to among solo Beatles LPs. When I first got All Things Must Pass in the late 1970s, it barely registered that Clapton and the Dominoes were on it -- whom I am a huge fan of. Perhaps the remix will let Derek and the Ds shine through.

By virtue of Bangla Desh not being on an album, it does not enter in the mix. But it ranks amongst his best songs. What passion! So, it may an idea to do a ranking of GH singles or tracks.

Not yet, all very quiet on that front.

Just when George Harrison was establishing himself as a great Guitar soloist and Improviser, ~ "Something" & "Let It Be" Album and Singles Versions he became a slide Guitar player. I'd rather hear George Improvise without the slide. The only song I love that George plays slide on is "My Sweet Lord"! I also love George's Guitar solo on "While My Guitar Guitar Gently Weeps" "Live" at the Bangladesh Concert.

Hold your head in shame Mr Dixon🙂. How can you comment on the George Harrison self titled album and not mention one of the greatest songs ever written by him. Your Love Is Forever is one of George's best ever moments and personally I get more enjoyment out of this album than All Things Must Pass. So, not wishing to mislead everybody, George Harrison is my No.1 album.🙂 Still a great video though. Cheers...

Similarly to how you did with McCartney, videos of the best Lennon songs through the “decades” and the best Harrison songs through the decades would be great to see on your channel.

my boyfriend is a big georgie fan! we made love to this video on a beautifu sunday night, thank you so much for posting your rankings! he is surprised you like somewhere in england so much, that is my boyfriend's least favorite george album probably. he loves brainwashed though. i am his pisces fish!

Electronic Sound I know it's considered mandatory to have ATMP in the top spot but I rank them according to how frequently I play them. My favorite period is 1976 - 1982. The fact that those albums are underappreciated only makes me love them even more. I rank Cloud Nine and Brainwashed lower than most. While there are many good songs therein, I don't like Jeff Lynne's production, particularly on the former. Extra Texture has always been my go-to rainy day album. I think that Somewhere In England would achieve it's optimal form if they'd finally combine both versions. My low ranking of Dark Horse is mostly to do with my liking the others even better, though I like that well enough, except for the total deconstruction of Bye Bye love. Electronic Sound inevitably gets the bottom spot because it's not really music.

Great video! Generally I think George and John made some good solo albums but never anything close to Beatles level where as I think quite a few times Paul got there (McCartney, Ram, Band on the Run, Tug of War, Flaming Pie, Egypt Station...). I hoped that this video might make me reinvestigate George’s records but unfortunately not, maybe ATMP I will listen to again but don’t think it’s quite the classic others do..

What a great triple album that says I think probably the highlights for me, would be the of course I have you anytime my sweet lord Wawa is not a pity but his life hear me Lord it’s hard for me to pick which are the big highlights from me because I love the entire album One song in particular that I wished would’ve been on the album I think it would’ve worked good is this song called I live for you it has that really great guitar solo that’s wonderful steel guitar solo I love and it’s a really good bonus track along with The instrumental version of all things must Pass, because you get to hear what Phil Spector was doing when he was working out the big wall of sound production and I do love the my sweet lord 2000 re-released or so remake actually with a different guitar notes and I love how it ends with the girl singing at the end of the song. I haven’t quite heard the remix I might have to check the remix super deluxe version of all things must Pass out. that is a really good album and I’m glad that George Harrison was able to let loose musically with all the songs that he couldn’t record and that the Beatles might have rejected or didn’t want to record for whatever reason.

The ultimate "stuff you" album,is "All Things Must Pass",it being a triple,representing the number of songs he had written and tried to have released on a Beatles album,only to be rejected.

Definitely would have put Brainwashed above Material World. I find parts of that latter album drag, whereas I just adore what we got with Brainwashed. A shame we had to wait for his passing to get new George music
