Bad vs Great Beatle Remixes! The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!

Bad vs Great Beatle Remixes! The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!
Hey everyone!
In tonight’s video I cover Sgt Pepper’s Lonley Hearts Club Band, The White album, Abbey Road, and the Let it Be album remixes by The Beatles!
As I go over each release, I cover the good, the bad & the ugly regarding these very popular remixes, and in the end rank them to each other.
Which of these remixes were worth the wait? Which weren’t worth the wait? And most of all, which of these remixes shouldn’t have ever seen the light of day?
These and many more questions are answered in tonight’s video!
And as usual if you enjoy tonight;s video, please consider giving it a Thumbs-Up as that helps the KZread algorithm better identify the channel to a larger audience!

we forget that in those days people usually did not listen to music on headphones. thus the ping pong stereo was not as odd to listen to. plus a lot of people didnt have their speakers very far apart - think of those portable turn tables with their detachable (paper cone) speakers and rather short cables. a lot of 1960s music was stereo-mixed that way: bass on one side, horns on the other etc.

  • @panslegs2773

The original engineering and production on Abbey Road was sublime, helped by the all new transistorised desk in studio 2. It was only ever mixed in stereo, so I agree it didn't really warrant a remix but of course that wouldn't stop them wanting to make a new product for us to buy.

Not being anything more than a casual listener, I find your comments very instructive. Nevertheless all these remixes give me the same feeling as I got with the introduction of the CD with everyone going on about not hearing any scratch. I grew up with the imperfect version, which I loved, so it is hard to really care to much about any other version. Great video again, Michael, with a lot of food for thought!

IMHO, The UK "Revolver" is the best LP The Beatles ever released. "Let It Be Naked" was a Paul project and sucks in comparison to the original and the remix. John's vocal studio shenanigans belong on the LP. Very interesting commentary from Michael.

Hey Michael, another great topic! I'm really enjoying these!!! Here's my ranking from worst to best: 5. Abbey Road (original mix was great - only improvement was centering lead vocal in "Here Comes The Sun".) 4. Let It Be 3. White Album (main issue - adding ADT to vocals in some songs, eg. "Savoy Truffle".) 2. Revolver (far better than original mix - but with the new source separation technology they could have taken it further eg. separating guitars in dual guitar songs.) 1. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band ( i think what they have done is brilliant.) I hope they go further with the remixes when they do the other early albums. And when they do M Mystery Tour, i hope they add 1 or 2 instrumental pieces to the soundtrack side & "You Know My Name" (1967 recording) to the B side. Tiger.

Hi Michael! Love this! Love your channel! I love the "Sgt. Pepper's" Remix deluxe set. Received it on June 1st 2017. It's excellent! The 5.1 Mix is amazing. I think "Abbey Road" is good. There's some extra "Come Together" phrases in the remix. The medley is nice sounding too. "The Beatles" remix was very surprising in a good way. Some nuances in "Don't Pass Me By". 5.1 mix in that is top notch for me. "Let it Be" I dig (or "Dig It"). Heard the remix, yet to hear the 5.1. Although "Revolver" I believe is their best (and my favorite) album, I didn't get it. It didn't sound right to me. No 5.1 either which was disappointing. Giles completely stripped down "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "She Said, She Said". I'll stick with the original LPs with that one 😊Keep up the good work. How can I promote your channel on my channel?

I just got the remixes for Revolver and Pepper for Christmas, and they are both wonderful. The only problem I have with the Pepper mix is the sped up She's Leaving Home. I personally prefer the slower version, and I think the original mix was good as is. Also in terms of the Abbey Road mix, I do think some changing was needed. I think most of the mixes on the album were good, but some of the panning on songs like You Never Give Me Your Money needed tweaking. While I don't believe they handled the mixes the best, I do think they could have improved upon the original album if less tampering had been done to the artists original purpose. Great video!

These remixes have definitely been a mixed bag. Every time one drops, there's the usual ranting and raving that greets each one. I get the box sets primarily for the demos and books. I also don't mind the existence of alternate remixes, as long as there is no concerted effort to replace the originals (which has always been my problem with what George Lucas did with his embarrassing Special Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy - he pretty much buried access to the originals and that is the worst possible crime against art). As you know, I wholeheartedly agree about the new Revolver remix. Excellent and a good sign for things to come. The deluxe White Album, as a whole, was the best release overall due to those amazing Esher demos. Great video as always, Michael!

Really enjoyed this presentation! I couldn't agree more with your analysis of the Beatles remixes. Let It Be Naked sounds better produced as a proper album without the chatter, false starts & stops than Let It Be. The Giles Martin (as Phil Spector's) remix is not as coherent or cohesive, more a live jam with orchestral overdubs which always bugged McCartney.

Enjoyed this survey and your detailed comments, especially regarding REVOLVER and SGT. PEPPER'S. I prefer the Mono mixes to most of the stereo mixes of the Beatles, especially the pre-PEPPER albums as they were mixed with the band present. The 2009 stereo version of REVOLVER still sounds lopsided, especially on headphones (as you mentioned). I agree that the recent ABBEY ROAD remix was both unnecessary and heavy-handed. When someone starts messing with the established soundstage of an iconic album, there's going to be trouble. I also agree that the "White Album" probably had much to gain, both from a remix and archival standpoint. However, you seemed to gloss over the recent LET IT BE remix, speaking more about the previous ...NAKED release. As someone who preferred the warmth of the original LET IT BE vinyl album to the 2009 stereo release on CD, I was interested in hearing your impressions of this most recent remix. What is it about that version that ranked such a mediocre mark? Great job, Michael. I look forward to your content in 2023! All the best!

Your comment about stereo being looked at as a gimmick reminded me of a question I wanted to ask you. A few days ago, I was going through my 60 plus Elvis albums my mom had left me when she passed away in 2021. A lot of these are really old albums. In fact all of them are really old but some appear to have come from the late '50s and early '60s. Anyhow, I was looking for some of the Elvis Christmas albums she had so that I could listen to them since it's Christmas time. And one of them had a Special Notice on the back cover near the right bottom. It was about a new Orthophonic High Fidelity pressing this album was supposed to be in. When I saw that it kind of cracked me up because it said you don't have to worry about this becoming an outdated technology or something to that effect. I wish I could just post the picture I took of it in this reply. Anyway it was trying to assure people that they wouldn't be wasting their time or money on this orthophonic record. I've not even heard of an orthophonic record. What in the world is that? I was thinking this was a 1962 stereo pressing of Elvis at first but then I realized it was mono. So it was before stereo was even getting used at least regularly. I haven't researched it myself yet but I was wondering if you might have a quick answer as to what an orthophonic high fidelity LP is? I can tell you it didn't sound as hi+fi has the 1971 Elvis Christmas album did haha. BTW, I really enjoyed your video. I have thought that all of the remixes we're going to all be horrible after hearing the Abbey Road and Let It Be recent mixes. I don't have the other ones yet so I'm looking forward to finally getting the White Album and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! Merry Christmas Michael and I hope you have a Happy New Year as well! 🎄 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

The 2009 remasters are superior. Compare she said she said from 2009 and the 2022 mix Yesterday I was listening to sgt pepper the Giles Martin remix and noticed something during a really cool song I've always liked, good morning. At 1:16 George Harrison's really cool guitar part comes in and a few seconds later it fizzles out in a really cool fuzzy distorted way on the 2009 version. You hear this from the left earphone. I noticed yesterday the the Giles Martin remix the awesome fussy fade out of this guitar part isn't as clear and it's on the right side speaker, his fuzzy fade out happens at 1:28 just for reference. Guitar part starts at 1:16 and fuzzy fade out starts at 1:28

Anyone know if Real Love/Free as a Bird are getting remixed? I know that after settling for the tinny vocal track for FAAB, they discovered later that a better one was available -- and had been *released* on the "Imagine" OST album!

On The Beatles "1" Deluxe from 2015, "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" on the dvd are both not only remixed but especially on "Real Love", there are more parts heard (extra guitar parts really predominant). The keyboard on "Real Love" has been really beefed up right in the intro.

I agree with everything for the reasons you stated. Abbey Road didn't need a rebuild. Neither did Let It Be as I figure Spector's version was a good as anything for what it is but Spector fumbled badly by leaving Don't Let Me Down off. Pepper and Revolver are so new and sparkling stereo versions of the mono albums. Love them White album? Love it except for one niggling thing that bugs the heck out of me: the chaos was mixed out of Helter Skelter. Chaos was what that song was all about and it had been neutered and made to sound polite. Ringo's moment where he explains about the blisters,,,, hardly audible. I give a HARD FAIL to Helter Skelter.

Agree re "Helter Skelter". Right from the get-go, Giles and Sam Okell took that fantastic jagged guitar chord progression in the intro not only down in the mix but seemed to have EQ'd the EDGE right out making it too soft.

I personally felt the White Album remix buried some instruments that stood out in the original, and unburied some elements - particularly background vocals - that didn't deserve the prominence they now have. I always bought the stereo versions of Beatle albums when they first came out, so moving anything from one side to the other, or even to the center, sounds weird to me. Now I wish I hadn't sold my mono box set: we know that's the way they wanted it to be heard.

I'll be a little kinder to Abbey Road but I know where you are coming from. I find the Giles version to be a little warmer than the '09 remaster. Sun King loses some of its swampy ambience in the remix. But even the '09 remaster has issues for me. I swear that I could hear John change pickups on I Want You. I can no longer hear that little click on either version. I like hearing those little details. Another minor quibble is A Day in the Life from Pepper. I kind of wish that they had kept the panning on John's voice. It was something that I liked. Lucy also has a change with the new panning of the organ riff. It's okay but it's different. Meh. You are right in saying that care must be given to preserve the vision. It's like a movie based on historical events becomes the defacto truth for a lot of people. It would be sad to play broken telephone with any "classic" album. But overall I am definitely super stoked about all these new remixes. I'm hoping that Giles And Sam finish up the catalogue. I would really love to hear what they would do to '63 to '65 material. Can you imagine?

The other stereo mixes are based on the mono mix (better for Giles): White Album, Sgt Pepper, Revolver and soon Rubber Soul (most in need of new mix) Is new stereo mixes of Abbey Road and Let it Be really a mix-down of the 5.1 mixes? 🙂

TL:DR too bad you have to read tor ignore this about Abbey Road.: Agree w the stereo aspect. My concern is with the future. It's rampant w modern groups, so what's going to happen once someone takes liberties with fine tuning instruments and vocals. It terrifies me. OH! Listening to Abbey Road while at the infusion clinic non-stop. I really wish they'd have left off "Octopus es Garden" and "Maxwell's Hammer," "Polythene Pam" took me a minute, but it segues well into, "She Came Into the Bathroom Window." The entire Side B gives "Dark Side of the Moon" vibes. Paul McCartney, my least favorite member, killed it on Side B. And I read in Ultimate Guitar I read it was McCartney had in ordering the songs for the medley. So sublime. A perfect song would've been "Sun King" except that Lennon wrote throw away lyrics in Italian. They're nonsensical. I had to completely reexamine my feelings about McCartney. I still think he writes "Silly Love Songs," pun intended. But "Oh Darling," "You Never Give Me Your Money," and "Golden Slumbers," which I've always loved, are for the ages. Also features some of Ringo's best drumming! "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "The End," are the greatest examples. Thanks for making me think about their music in terms of albums instead of songs I hear as single hits I won't be around much. I'm back in infusion, and it's kicking my butt. I look like someone broke my nose lol. I'll be better soon. It's affective. I might have found a job that works better with my situation, so that'd be great.P.S. I wonder why Manson thought The White Album was his influence when thematically this album fits his inner demons as well. 😍❤👍

Interesting take on the remixes, but I have to disagree on a couple of things. Abbey Road always seemed to me to have some elements that were too low in the mix, especially “Come Together.” The electric piano and guitars are barely audible in the verses and needed to be turned up, but only a little. “Oh Darling” is my personal favorite of any Giles remix because the backing vocals are heavenly. The original mix had them much too quiet, IMO. BTW, were you aware that the mixing consoles for EMI Studios were solid state by the time of the sessions for Abbey Road? Kenneth Womack wrote an interesting book about it a few years ago. The other thing was the White Album. Giles took a few too many liberties, although he did clean up the sound of the album, overall. “Helter Skelter” isn’t the same without the bass prominent in the mix and “IVE GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS” is turned down? Why? There’s a few other places he should have left alone, but no remix isn’t worth a listen. I admit Revolver has a really good remix, but the bass on “Taxman” was a little much for my car speakers when listening to the CD. Another favorite remix was “Fixing A Hole”. I hear harmonies there that aren’t as prominent in the ‘67 mix. Enjoy your videos. Cheers.

Abbey Road didn't need much, maybe nothing. The original was/is fantastic. Let it Be Naked is the wonderful. It's good to get the Esher Album as good as we can hear it. Good songs are still good without electrification. With these remixes, Revolver has become my favorite album. It was the perfect mix of experimentation balanced off with doing too much, which I think happened with Sgt Pepper (still a great album).

The Problem with all the remixes is agreement on preferred format blu-ray audio vs cd vs high quality Vinyl vs streaming. Right now you can pay a million dollars for the complete White Album or 1 hundred dollars for Revolver. Giles this format thing or controversy is so dumb.
