180-gram single LP reissue
New stereo mix by Giles Martin (son of original producer George Martin) and engineer Sam Okell
Sourced directly from the original 4-track master tapes
Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 11/500!
"Revolver was the sound of the Beatles fully embracing the recording studio as a sonic canvas, free to pursue musical ideas and possibilities that would reshape rock forever." - Rolling Stone
From "Taxman" to "Tomorrow Never Knows," The Beatles' Revolver has been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell, and sourced directly from the original 4-track master tapes with audio brought forth in stunning clarity with the help of cutting-edge technology developed by the award-winning sound team at Peter Jackson's WingNut Films Productions Ltd. Now available on 180-gram vinyl.
Revolver was The Beatles' 1966 album that changed everything. Spinning popular music off its axis and ushering in a vibrant new era of experimental, avant-garde sonic psychedelia, Revolver brought about a cultural sea change and marked an important turn in The Beatles' own creative evolution. With Revolver, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr set sail together across a new musical sea.
On October 28, 2022, Revolver will be released worldwide in a range of beautifully presented, newly mixed and expanded Special Edition packages by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe.
The Revolver album's 14 tracks have been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo and Dolby Atmos, and the album's original mono mix is sourced from its 1966 mono master tape.
All the new Revolver releases feature the album's new stereo mix, sourced directly from the original 4-track master tapes. The audio is brought forth in stunning clarity with the help of cutting edge de-mixing technology developed by the award-winning sound team led by Emile de la Rey at Peter Jackson's WingNut Films Productions Ltd.
Across all the configurations, Revolver's Special Edition showcases the Grammy-winning original album artwork created by The Beatles' longtime friend, German bassist and artist Klaus Voormann.
After the December 1965 release of their groundbreaking album, Rubber Soul, and after wrapping up that year's tour dates, a late decision to cancel shooting plans for a third Beatles film, A Talent For Loving, would have a significant effect on the creation of Revolver. The time allocated for filming and recording songs for a soundtrack was removed from the band's schedule, allowing the group to take a four-month break before the Revolver recording sessions began. "One thing's for sure," John said a few weeks before the band's return to the studio, "the next LP is going to be very different."
On April 6, 1966, The Beatles gathered in Studio Three at EMI Studios (now called Abbey Road Studios) for their first Revolver recording session. With their producer George Martin flanked by recording engineer Geoff Emerick and technical engineer Ken Townsend, they went in blazing, starting with "Tomorrow Never Knows." John's ethereal vocals (fed from his mic through a rotating Leslie speaker), innovative tape loops - including Paul saying ‘ah, ah, ah, ah', which when sped up produced a sound similar to a seagull's screech - converge with Ringo's thunderous drum pattern, George's tamboura drone, and a backwards guitar solo. "Tomorrow Never Knows" propelled The Beatles and popular music into exciting new terrain. In an interview before Revolver's August 5, 1966 release, Paul explained to NME, "We did it because I, for one, am sick of doing sounds that people can claim to have heard before." Revolver's Special Edition also features The Beatles' first take of "Tomorrow Never Knows" from the April 6 session and a mono mix that was issued on a small number of records before the LP was recut with the correct version.

About the stereo remix, I believe that's impossible to do an AAA remix using this new Peter Jackson technology. Revolver was recorded in 4 tracks, and in order to add more and more instrumentation and vocals, they had to put different instruments in just one channel (bass, percussion and drums - for instance) So, in order to separete those individual instruments that were all mix together in the original tape, Giles Martin had to run the Peter Jackson software that identifies those instruments and separate them. But the software only works on digital music - as far as I know. Am i right?

Maybe I’m a little late to the ball here. But it’s confirmed in the included book that the mono was cut directly from the original analog master tape. Equalizations was added with notes from 1966 👍🏼🙌🏼
Great overview, Michael. The reason the mix and resulting soundstage was able to be improved was due to Peter Jackson’s de-mixing technology where individual voices and instruments that had been bounced to one track could be separated and put on separate tracks. Because this technology is done in the digital realm, an AAA version is not possible.
You need merch. And I’ll buy it. With a shirt that says “the big guns”. Love it Michael. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, Michael. That Revolver in mono is the crown jewel here and that alone makes this a worthy purchase. Great job of this. 😊
The best thing about your channel sir.......is your integrity. You have it. Second, your love and passion for the music. Sometimes we collectors forget that it is all about enjoying the music.

As always, lovely job Michael.
Really great review, very clear and well done!
Michael, the reason they can't do an all AAA version of the stereo is with this release they used AI to separate the individual instruments from the original 4 track tape. If they did AAA it would just be a better version of the original stereo version. The only way they could do this remix is by using Peter Jacksons technology to separate the individual instruments
Very useful review as always, Michael👏👏
A few disclaimers...it's Halloween night, and I've had a few glasses of wine. But I'm speaking as someone who was 16 years old when Revolver was released. I remember listening to it one afternoon in August 1966, and being quietly blown away. I won't state a firm opinion on which Beatles album was 'the best', but I will say that it was Revolver that affected me the most when I heard it for the first time. Every new Beatles album was a revelation during that decade, but this one was the most revelatory of all - to me anyway. What I find most interesting with this re-issue is the detail and seriousness with which the new remix is analyzed. I've only listened to it on KZread, but I will agree that it sounds fresher and more 'upfront' all round. What this means for me is that, almost 60 years on, it's a chance to listen to it with almost fresh ears. It's 100% the same recording as 1966, but there are enough subtle alterations in the sounds within the remix that it's possible to hear it in a different way. For that I really applaud Giles Martin. I feel similarly about the 2009 remasterings & videos for 'Back in the USSR' and 'Glass Onion', which also enable you to listen to them (almost) for the first time, once again.
Great to hear I am look forward to getting my copy soon can’t wait to hear that mono version

Intelligent, informative, interesting and well balanced analysis. Thank you.
I ordered this more out of curiosity than anything. For me, music is 99% about the songs, and these songs were perfection in 1966. The audio can be made better I suppose, but the magic is in the songs themselves. I listen to the Beatles on an AM radio and love the experience. Good video, though. I appreciate your thoughts.

I read a lot of listener reviews and have found it mostly split even between the two, depending upon the type of bass sound/mix
Of all thes remixes over the past few years--The White Album is the one that really sounds fresh to me.
Thank you Michael for calling the estate out in such a frontal way and being our voice. Glad that it was included in the title. Yes, also that the mono can’t be gotten separately is pretty derp.
I enjoyed your comments, as always, you are being kept very busy because of the shear quantity of re-releases! I like the new mix, and just as interesting are the outtakes, always fascinating to hear how songs evolved! I am not going to buy the box set, I have many copies of Revolver already, the only thing I would like from the box is the beautiful book! Keep up the great work Michael! Happy Listening to all your subscribers!
I've bought the new remix LP because I only have a couple old beat up Capitol pressings that are missing some of my favorite songs on it. I hope I get it today. Michael, I am relatively new to your channel but I am enjoying it! However I watched some of your previous videos and saw your sound equipment! I realized you are on a completely different level! I like my system, but I think it is childs play compared to what you listen on!
It’s the Beatles Revolver. I am looking forward to both deluxe sets coming Monday. Great review Michael. What’s next Rubber Soul I suppose, work backwards now.
As always: Thank you for the video review, Michael. Always entertaining and likeable :). Have not heard the new mono cut so far (only “unboxed” it) but I am still surprised that you are about the only person I heard/read of who hears such a dramatic difference between the original version and the one from 2014 (cf. Hoffman forums, for example). However, it is interesting nevertheless. Keep up the good work 👍.
Thank you, Michael. I always look forward to hearing your reviews and comparisons because they obviously come from the heart as a true music fan. Cheers!
Great video, Michael. Loved all your insight into this release. The comparisons were terrific. Have a great weekend!
Thanks for your videos. Always enjoy them. You say you "took the day off." I always wonder what it is that you do that you can afford to buy so many records . . . Maybe that's what I want to do!
I made the decision to not buy this and instead use the money to buy an excellent condition mono original press. These ‘deluxe’ box sets are great but all the extras hardly leave the box after the first week or two and if I really want to hear them I have the option to stream in 192/24. Agreed. The Giles remix is compressed dynamically, and stamped hot, so it could impress many listeners. The mono mix is a tiny bit brighter compared to the 2009 CD. My Revolver stereo LP sounds fine, but is somewhat worn for the years. I usually play the mono 2009 CD.

Michael, I have found myself coming back to many of your video posts after initially given an earlier one just a passing glance. Maybe it was your deliberate calm vocals or resistance to play up the 'spin' factor that many other vinyl posts do. You are very articulate and approach each review with a distinct honesty and make it clear that this is your opinion only and that listeners need to judge for themselves. I have come to look forward to your reviews and after listening/watching several others, anxiously looked forward to your assessment with the thought of "okay, what does Michael think of this release?". Thanks again and you did not disappoint.
Revolver has always been one of my favorite albums, not just Beatles album, and I just love this set. The stereo remix sounds fantastic to me but what I really love about the box are the session tapes. Listening to them work up to the master is priceless. That is one thing I love about some jazz remasters is that you get the alternative takes. This is one box set where you need to use the headset. It adds a separate dimension. Rubber Soul is rumored to be next and I can’t wait for that.
great review. I can't wait if they hopefully gonna mix Help!. I would love some demos or 2023 / 2024 mix of I've just seen a face
Michael, Rubber Soul next! I won't live long enough to see all the remixes! Mr Pete-----> aging hippie
The remix is impeccable and such a fresh take on one of the best Beatles album there is. A tiny bit crisp and clinical, I agree with you, especially when having just listened to the mono. But was pleasantly surprised at the detail. The Pink Floyd Animals remix was great, and now this. It kind of makes me want more remixes! And more 5.1 mixes. My goodness, the Animals 5.1 mix is out of this world in my opinion.

Giles Martin's "remixes" are, in MY opinion, tasteless. AND, just as importantly, ALL of his remixes are compressed in the mastering. That's right, they've been 'louded'. They have compressed the dynamic range. Why, you might ask? Ask him, or his mastering staff. Apparently, the excitement generated by the Beatles' music is too much for today's ears. I'll pass on this 'remix', thank you.

@@cjay2 I believe this was to make the music sound more contemporary for modern ears, in order to bring in a new generation of fans who are used to the technology we have today. @@cjay2 To be honest, I've only started listening to the Beatles seriously around 5 years ago, maybe less. I'm 30 now. I grew up with a CD player and then an MP3 player. My parents never really prioritized music (at least not Engish music) while I was growing up. I've been listening to dynamically crushed music for over 2 decades without even knowing what dynamic range truly was was up until a few years ago. I listened to FM radio and at the time, it was Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, Sheryl Crowe, etc. So yes, the excitement generated by the Beatles' music is too much for my ears. However, I don't see a problem here. People know what they like. To me it's just a remix -- that being someone's take on an album. I enjoy Steven Wilson remixes too. The remix offers some dimensionality that I've never heard before, so it was a fun listen. I like listening to both. IDK, maybe I'm a lunatic for thinking it sounds good on my planar headphones streaming from Qobuz (haven't listened to on speakers with the vinyl yet - maybe the vinyl master is vastly different?) At the end of the day, I think the Beatles are amazing. Musically speaking, I think they were aliens (in a good way). But personally, my jaw doesn't drop at the original production / recording quality of Revolver like it does with some other albums recorded around that time (ie The Doors debut, LA Woman, Morrison Hotel, etc). When I listened to those, I couldn't believe what I was hearing was over 50 years old. And it might just be a matter of mono vs stereo recording, and that I gravitate towards stereo - I'm not sure. I'm sorry if this is a hot take around here but that's just my opinion.
Thanks again Michael for a great review. I love your honesty and passion. I'm really interested in the new mono version and how it compares to the 2014 mono version. After hearing your thoughts, I'm going to get the new box set. More bass and punch sounds like a winning combination.
Great comparison Micheal.
Dear Sir, I have an interesting idea, I think now is an opporunity, to compare sound from Revolver LP vinyl disk, with sound from Revolver CD disk, I would be very interested in your opinion, I love listening to your detailed analysis, I think you'd find that amusing, I wait for it impatiently, thank you in advance, I salute you very much.....
My box arrived today, and the first thing I did after the unboxing and first listening ritual was to come back here. Just like you, I’m quite surprised with the overall quality in terms of presentation and the sound of both the mono edition and the remix. I agree with you that some of the songs in the stereo remix sound a bit clinical (She Said She Said, for example), but it’s still very, very enjoyable to me. The title of your video led me to think that you were disappointed. That’s why I didn’t want to watch it before 😅 great video, Michael!
Looks like a nice book but that Blondie one , wow, now that’s a book.
Along with the rest, thanks for another informative video, Michael. Personally, would have preferred the inner sleeves to be black. Thanks again. Still fancy the glasses!
I have Apple Music and added the Super Deluxe version last night. You really notice the differences when listening on headphones. The mono version seems to be lower in volume than the stereo mix, but the same for the Atmos mix. I tend to prefer listening to the stereo mix over the Atmos mixes of the classic albums that have been showing up on Apple Music. Few are done correctly, and stereo was how they were mixed in the day. My Bose 301 II speaker create spatial audio on their own.

Great review Michael. Loved your mono appraisal, good news you think it beats 2014 version. Regarding the stereo remix it makes a tough comparison.Even George Martin spent very little time on the stereo version. Revolver in stereo is very much maligned over the years. The -2 -2 Uk from 1971 is supposedly one of the best. As is the German copy from the 70s. 2012 stereo remaster is ok ,solid version. So we know they used A.I technology demixing the tapes for this new remix. I would like to think it should be one of best versions of this album in stereo. I ordered the stereo remix on vinyl, so there you go. I have mixed feelings. I liked the White Album remix/remaster. Corrected some strangeness on a record that even John Lennon stated was badly mixed. Pepper...sounds fine, still listen to my UK stereo when I want to hear it. Abbey Road and Let It Be: Mixed reaction. Some good moments, mostly indifferent to what they did. My reservation over these new LPs is that what made them special in the first place was the ingenious way Martin, Geoff Emerick and others stretched the boundaries and capabilities of the limited technology available to them, forcing the recording industry to quickly adapt and improve its products so that others could do what the Beatles were doing. Using new technology after the fact feels to me like colorizing movies or the irritating George Lucas tendency to digitally alter his old films because new technology allows him to do things he couldn't do 40 years ago. It rewrites history.

Maybe a bit whimsical for some. Design is one of those things where different designers will have different opinions, styles and results. Some of my favorite design work in the music industry is the fine work U2 has on their tour programs, books and other materials. Steve Averill has been doing their design for decades. Great stuff. The real reason for the re-issues is copyright, in the UK current recording go out of copyright after 70 years, (until 2010 ish it was 50 years), so all the material prior to 1970 went out of copyright in 2010 that's why analog release are no longer available. Great video as always I waited to watch this after I finished listening to everything which I did a short time ago. I agree I was surprised how good the 2022 Stereo Remix is, and feel its more balanced than some of the past Deluxe Editions. Like you after reading they used the 2014 cutting notes to do the new MONO mix I feel its a lot better but of course your equipment far exceeds what I have but again the fuller soundstage and punchier mix was a surprise for sure, as I love the 2014 MONO Mix. Unlike you I don't have a first pressing MONO but I do have a First pressing Stereo but didn't compare as this is a new mix. I think they hit it out of the park with this one. My only complaint would be to give us some more outtakes. I didn't purchase the CD Set but again Like Let it Be to have a CD with 10 minutes of music when they could have put more tracks out, but I get it they are wanting uniformity now after the big differences in the White Album and Abbey Road sets. I haven't watched your Animals video as I am behind and I want to listen to the vinyl first. I already heard the CD version and was blown away at how much better the new mix is of Animals is. Now that Giles have mastered the deconstruction process I am afraid you are right and will get a dedicated MONO mix with Rubber Soul or whatever early release is next for 2023. Lastly an all Analogue would be near impossible now. Call it a huge loss and lost! They chose to let the tapes sit and they are so bad hence why they are transferring to digital, which Giles at Abbey Road said that how they want to preserve the music for future generations, so an all AAA chain is out of the question. Now dare I say and don't kill me, but if we have all the tapes already transferred to digital, why not run a refreshed mix based on the cutting notes on the boxes instead of a remix and try o be faithful to the original mix and run the digital back to Analogue and cut new lacquers from the lathe . So it would be AAA to DSD back to AAA cut to vinyl. It will still have the digital step like some other people that shall be nameless, but that may be the only option that is left for audiophiles. (My Opinion)

I wish Abbbey Road Studios implemented DSD256 as standard now, I am sure they are evaluating this after Mofi debacle proved people can hardly tell...
Now I can sell my 2014 Mono. Sweet!
This channel is an audiophile‘s secret treasure
Thank you
Hi i really love love you’re content, your good company. When it comes to The Beatles i think there trademark was 4 track recording on Abbey Road, it means that Ringo and Paul was mixed down on one track to make space, mixing drum’s and base together was making the rhythm session very tight. I think this is the Signature of the Beatles, Beatles and soundstage don’t make sense to me, thanks
I listened to the new CD & thought yeah it's probably the best stereo version with one or two poor tracks to my ears. Then I put the Mono disc in & realised it was all a waste of time, it's still the best way to listen to it.

Agreed. I usually listen to the 2009 mono CD. Sometimes my 2496 recording of my stereo LP, first pressing.
Great video. I want to ask you Michael , which do you like better the new mix or the mono version in the new box ?

I like the Mono more Ingi
I love the new stereo remix of this album - got my vinyl boxset today - and am a life-long Beatles fan (I was born in the early '60s before they actually became 'huge'!!). I'm very, very familiar with both original mono and stereo LP's and have several copies of each. For me, this new stereo remix is wonderful.... I feel it's what would have been done if they'd had a 16 track recorder available! The original stereo mix is 'difficult' as so much is like their earliest albums:- instruments on one channel, and vocals and a couple of bits of instruments from the other channel.... This new remix - and the whole remit of this new remix - was to bring the stereo version up to date, and make it sound good and balanced (one reason the mono versions always sounded better - the music was all together, and it sounds powerful); this new stereo does just that; it puts the vocals in the middle, the drums in the middle, and spreads the other instrument around the centre and out further, along with harmony vocals too. For me, it sounds terrific, and I see no reason really to re-release the original crude stereo mix yet again, when there's there's already so many releases of that version over the past 55 years - early '70s pressings are still readily available online at good prices, ands these use early 60s stampers and sound great (as great as that stereo version can sound!) Shame they didn't package the two main albums with copies of the original flip-back sleeves, after they went to so much trouble to very accurately reproduce the record labels with the original PCS and PMC codes and the "Sold In UK..." text so perfectly! Great review anyway... very entertaining! Thanks 😊
When the Brown Santa delivers stuff to your house he must have to use a lift to bring you all your Lp's. I live to watch your videos. Mr. Pete---------> aging hippie
Awesome review! I was glad that the Mono is at least as good as 2014. The stereo remix is fun new way to hear the songs and I enjoyed them, nothing will beat the original UK pressings sonically but I like to have the different versions. I was wary about GZ but it looks like they did a great job. Thanks!

I think originals can be beat. I’m not sure if an AAA pressing can beat the original. If there’s one thing mofi-gate taught us is that originals can be beat significantly. The technology is available to increase details in a recording and decrease distortion and other drawback of vinyl.

@@jennapornographyjame I'm sure there is a way, but in comparing what is being produced and the UK originals they always sound better I think it is the whole chain of production EMI had with stellar cutters and pressing machines and the people with more experience for making vinyl. AAA releases like the Tone poets are so fantastic but Mo-fi has also had awesome sounding vinyl I will hope future tech will be better.
I picked up the box set on release day. Got it for 186euro.. so I was waiting for your review to see if it is worth opening. As I'm not setup for mono nor do I really care for all the other takes it will probably get played a few times and sit on the shelf.
The mono originals uk sound a bit better, because they were cut on tube machines, that is makes a big difference. For example Help original uk mono sounds better than mono remastered 2014. Good video, it's always good to talk about one of the most important bands of popular music.

Valve amplified cutter head has been mentioned. One could then ask how would second, third, fourth and so on pressings compare to present offerings?
Are you using a new camera? Love the nice depth of field and auto focus. Which model is it?
I think the new mix sounds a little bit noisy (schrill) in some vocal-parts. The quiter songs (For No One), (Here, there and everywhere), are all sounding very very good , better than any other stereo mix! A Highlight is "Got to get you" a bad example is "she said she said"

Interesting, I don't like the drums on Got To Get You, think they've obviously had a go at the bass & ignored the drums leaving them sounding weak & shallow. Agree with you on She Said 👍

Agree with you, and I also find the mix way to bass heavy on certain songs. For No One is outstanding, but She Said is a disaster.
Better than the Abbey Road box. Essential.....if you have nice copies of other stereo /mono issues? Gatefold outtakes cover was the cover produced by the creator of the previous Beatles covers! Cool!
And in the end it's still the Beatles.." Peace and ❤
The stereo single album I will get. Outtakes, studio chatter, John eating cornflakes etc are curios maybe worth one listen so streaming is fine for that. I might wait for the Giles Martin Mono box-set in a couple of years so I can play those once or twice before I kick the bucket also.
Great video, Michael 45! Mine will come tomorrow Saturday or Monday at the latest. It's secret information held by EMI/Parlophone, I suppose, but I'm really curious about how many vinyl box sets they produced. Since the MoFi Thriller debacle, I'm always wondering how many units of product 'cut from the original master tape' can be done. Anyway, I preordered mine, so I would be sure to get one. Those waiting for the price to drop are taking the risk it will be sold out and unobtainable --- or am I crazy?

It could be done a half a million records. Nobody told it is a one-step process.
I’m sure this box set sounds great and I was so looking forward to playing it. However , yet again the main stream record companies treat us with contempt. My box set arrived with 3 out of 4 discs scratched and disc 1 with a pressing fault . Not to mention finger prints on one (but that is not such an issues as I have a VCS.) This is on top of the recent Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd Animals reissues being largely unlistenable. This wouldn’t have even happened in the mid 90s during vinyls demise . I really hope someone in the industry watched these channels . I’m pretty much ready to give up buying new main stream releases. These are not cheap yet they seem happy to supply faulty , sub standard product.
For once I have something. I have the 2014 Mono. I will skip this box but I hope to get the mono for the first 5 albums, I missed those.
For Revolver, an analog stereo remix would have just been centering the audio if as you want it to be is to be kept in a purely analog realm. Basically making mono out of the stereo. I wished they would have done that and in fact that is what George Martin did with Rubber Soul in 1986 when preparing the CD remasters. It is really impossible to take whatever elements there were and line them up analog tape. A lot of starting and stopping, insanely and painfully difficult. This really has to be done in a DAW software. Additionally, like Taxman, and many other songs, the tracks were recorded with multiple interments on one track so no elements mix down exist. Taxman had guitar bass and drums were all on one channel. They used the MAL digital AI software developed by Peter Jackson's group to split the combined track one into four or more individual tracks.
I sold all my Beatle records when the beetle box came out, that's my only one, save and except for the Pro use Abbey Road. I most certainly don't need other Beatle records I don't listen to because I'm a collector of music not bands catalogs. I try to find the best sounding versions of the records I love and those are the ones I keep in my collection.
May I suggest before dropping serious money on the box, compare the Apple lossless version of Revolver to the new remix.via Apple Music.
I am enjoying the remix the more i listen to it, however feel, as I have with all of Giles Martins remixes, that they are WAY to bass heavy (and this comes from a huge McCartney fan). I have to turn the bass down so my speakers don't buzz, especially on Taxman, but also on I'm only Sleeping. Also, She Said She Said, one of my favorite tracks, is hideous; the splash on Ringo's cymbals is now gone and the lead guitars sound horrid. For me, the mono mix remains the best of all of them, having been done to perfection by George Martin.

I agree with you, bass gitar it's too strong, I'm going to stay at 2009. remaster....
The remixes have emphasized things buried in the original mixes. Partly because of volume, but maybe also because of the imperfections of tape recording inherent in the medium have distorted it. Digital has more clarity and less extraneous noise vs. analog. That warm sound you hear in analog recordings? That’s noise and distortion.
I want to see your video, Michael. But, I also want to wait for my copy to arrive and judge for myself before hearing your opinion. What should I do? 😅
