In this webinar I explain the BCG (Boston Consultancy Group) matrix. I explain how to use it, fill it in, calculate relative market share and the pro's and con's of the model.
In 2014 The Boston Consultancy Group came up with a revised model of the original model which was invented in 1968. You find details of this model here: www.bcgperspectives.com/conte...

That is massively helpful. I started using fancy bcg matrix, but what you are doing helps me to do it on my own.
I Always find your videos very helpful to better understand lectures at my university. Especially when you explain how to apply in practice what we study on books. Unfortunately the italian system education it's all about theory. Gret job!

I am studying Business Management in a really good university and it pains me to say that we are taught a lot of different models, we are told what they are for, what they do and why they are important but we are never told, step to step on how to apply them. Your video really helped me during my assignment so bless you for that!
Good one
thanks you very much..
Amazing video! could you please make videos about competitor analysis and branch analysis (MESO analysis) too? I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
Great informative presentation - step by step. Enjoyed it.

@@PepijnSchoemakerWebinars we still used it at GE in 2012. It's a quite great way to visualise current position and opportunities. It makes it really interesting when you use it and add e.g. investment (cost per market share unit retained/gained) and/or product/service development/innovation (scenario planning/calculations). Another overview well explained - Great work 😎👍
hello, it's always a great pleasure to listened to your webinars. however you have promised me to make one on blue and red ocean strategies still then nothing pleas you have an easy way of simplifying things that I just want to hear it from you, have a nice day. it's TEDOM from Cameroon.

I use Dutch Books in this case... Sorry. But many textbooks cover it I guess.
You are awesome.The first time to learn and understand the BCG matrix through your lecture. My only problem is where you divided 16 by 17 and got 1 for the relative market share. Any explanation to that?

Can you please explain what depends on the size(diameter) of the circle in each quadrant? thx
@PepijnSchoemakerWebinars

The amount of turnover, profit or sales you make makes the size bigger or smaller. If you have (say) 4 business units and they all sell 100 together, then you calculate the percentage per business unit which each business unit is responsible for.
Hi, if a brand wants to relaunch its previous product that is not in the market anymore, which matrix should we use in order to study the market ?
@PepijnSchoemakerWebinars

I have no idea. You don't necessary need a matrix to study a market. You can just analyse it and look for opportunies and threats.

@PepijnSchoemakerWebinars

Nou, dat scheelt natuurlijk fracties. We noteren het uitgerekende RMA op die as. Maar zo is het model... Zo is het bedacht... En zoals gezegd, er zijn nogal wat bezwaren op dit model.
If the market growth is about 28% and one of the products growth is about35% ... how to figure this??
may i ask if i could use only 1 business unit?

If you plot PMC's within that BU; Yes. Why would you otherwise? Did you get the essention of this model?

As someone exploring these concepts as a novice, you went through that section way too fast. After watching a few videos on BCG I understand the "What and Why" nobody explains the "how". Yous started to here, but to me, it fell way short. Where are you getting the information for your spreadsheets, what did you include in them and why. Maybe this is an idea for another video tutorial. Thanks for the video yyou do explain the what and why very well.

Well, as far as you can influence it, yes, I guess. But the PLC makes sure the product/SBU will eventually shifts from star to CC. But if you loose marketshare, you will become a dog. Due to the PLC effect.

It could depend on what you want to do with the business/product/company - E.g. Time vs. Money invest for a certain growth/outcome ..and if you aim to merge, sell, buy, maximise short- or long-term outcome for shareholders or non-profit customers ..and if you put in aspects/dimensions such as "Blue/Red Ocean strategy," then you might see your "dog" or "cow" in a different light... why not make a "cog" or a "dow" :) Enjoy strategizing!

Baron Catherine Blogs are no PMC's or SBU's. Plus, they don't have marketshare. What do you mean?
You changed average market share several times and kept the previous records! what?
Your explanations are good but don't know why you've decided to change the x axis coordinates from right to left instead of from left to right. Using the number line it should go from left to right,(i.e. from (0)- low to (10) - high and not from( 0) -low to (-10)- high) which make no sense as -10 is lower than 0. So as not to confuse others who are not too mathematically inclined, why not just go exactly as the texts books or the Matrix originators which is BCG and stop customising it inaccurately. Nothing personal just my observation
@PepijnSchoemakerWebinars

Because we are calculating a relative marketshare there... If you have a marketshare of 15, and the biggest is 20, you would end up on the 0,75 on the axis. That's why.
