In this video I examine the interpretation of the octagon symbolism in BvS from the perspective of the Taoist symbol of opposites. The symbol is referred to as the "Bagua" within which is embedded the fundamental concept of Yin and Yang duality where each aspect contains its opposite.

BvS keeping on being relevant
Batman v Superman is one of the greatest movies ever.

Oh my god. BvS is my favorite movie, but watching your videos made it my ultra favorite movie
there is so much density to this film that in some ways I can't fault people for not being able to get into it or really enjoy it when compared to more popcorn and cookie cutter type superhero movies. This is the kind of stuff that I love seeing in film because it shows how much the director put into it, when you mention the painting that is on display when Clark and Bruce first meet there is no way a painting like that was just placed there without any thought into what the painting is and what it represents. I could see some people waving off things like the octagonal designs with Lex's lab and it also appearing during Superman and Batman's fight but there are just so many background details that when you notice them, you can't just write it off as saying "the director got lucky, they didn't mean for that to be there". That is bullshit and is a huge disservice to the work and dedication Snyder puts into his films.

@@rspy24 i think that is a good thing to do. i feel that catering to a stupid audiences dumbs down the audience. i like to give the audience credit or even a challenge. as an appreciator of art, we are supposed to watch and think while being entertained. that does come from education so i say if others dont have that then give it to them so they can regardless of whats popular

I really love this movie
The symmetry of the Wayne crypt dream and the Martha sequence is eye opening. That's what cinema is. I know a lot of these robot moviegoers nowadays don't know what cinema is but it's true. They're used to watching glorified sitcoms pretending to be movies, while reacting to Rotten Tomatoes "scores" with brashness on their social media, as if films are tests to be turned in for grades! It's amazing when people laugh after I tell them BvS is one of my favorites, as if superheroes can't be taken seriously anymore. What an absolute shame!!

As a Chinese, I have to say that your understanding of the philosophy behind Bagua is spot on. And your analyzation of BVS is definitely original and from a new perspective. Great work!! This movie is unique and has its own charm.

Too good. Thanks for putting in words how we felt about this film
absolutely wonderful analysis. The more this film is relevant, the more we learn and now the Bagua reflected in that shot of Superman tossed down. The elements at play here as well. I had not notice the similarities of Bruce and Clark's expression when confronting a powerful foe for the first time - Batmobile chase, 'Doomsday' birth. Bravo bravo
Brilliant invocation of "Martha".
This the the best explanation for for this movie's story and character arc. It just shows how detailed this movie was and how amazing it is if you pay attention to little details. Your work is truly amazing.
I love how I'm still learning new things about this film 3 years later! Amazing video man! 👌 ❤️
This analysis is just beyond many thoughts. Brilliant!
I love your analysis. Every time I start one of your videos and you present your thesis I think “hmmm ok we’ll see” by the end I’m thinking “It’s so obvious!”
I thought I had seen all the good BvS vids already but this BLEW my mind
*I've been awaiting your return to these video thesis* _I've been here since your MOS videos all the way back in 2013_
I maybe mentioned this on another one of your vids, but you do a great job explaining how Batman sees apart of himself in Superman, the very essence of yin and yang. Opposites contain a part of themselves within each other. Its a very basic principle of the universe we live in. It works in BvS because Batman projects himself onto Superman. From a distance, he sees him as a threat. Get up close to him, and you realize he just wants to save his mother.
Every video you make is a punch in my heart, in a good way. Make me remember how good this movie is. A new concept you find, make me more Snyder's fan. God bless you man
Love these analyses. Keep them coming. I used to think I was the only one who liked this movie.
Thanks for this Video. 🙏🏽
Another excellence piece good sir. The story of perspective is reiterated, & layered throughout the film
Brilliant!
Everyone gets so caught up in the Jesus symbolism in both MoS and BvS that they often miss the deeper, less subtle, and more interesting symbolisms the movies bring
In ZSJL, Superman and Batman's final battle costumes are literally the Yin-Yang color scheme
Amazing, thank you.
Brilliant work phenomenal job this is the type of content I crave
Awesome video bro, philosophy and art may bless you. I'm hungry for more
Brilliant
Wow, this is an awesome video. It brings up a couple of ideas I’ve had but develops them much further and verbalized them succinctly and in an easy to understand way. I’ve shared it on my Vero, hopefully Zack gets a chance to watch it when he has some downtime from filming Army of the Dead.
Just now seeing this video in 2024. These observations make me love my favorite film even more! Thank you!
Every video I see about BVS’s story, I love it even more.
Wow, you're brilliant for finding this, good job !
Wow... Another great video from the man "Reel Analysis" himself! Keep up the good stuff dude. Also, Reel Analysis I got a question for you about BvS. It may or may not be a detail you have picked up on but I still want to share regardless. It's long so bear with me if you can. It's about the Apollonian and Dionysian. According to Wikipedia, "The Apollonian and Dionysian" is described as a philosophical/literary concept and a dichotomy/dialectic, based on Apollo and Dionysus in Greek Myth. Figures like Friedrich Nietzsche and other would write about this dichotomy. In Greek Myth, Apollo and Dionysus are both sons of Zeus. Apollo = the god of the sun, of rational thinking order, and appeals to logic, prudence and purity. Dionysus = the god of wine and dance, of irrationality and chaos, and appeals to emotions and instincts. Although they were often entwined by nature, the Ancient Greeks did not consider the 2 gods to be opposites or rivals. To be straight up honest with you, I'm not really educated on Greek Myth and Western Philosophy enough to make an educated analysis on this ties into BvS. But would you be willing to do an analysis on "The Apollonian and Dionysian in Batman v Superman" when you ever get the chance? It would be much appreciated. ❤

Apollo the gods of knowledge and sun, the god we are destiny to be. Apolony the god of joy and wine, the one we are and enjoy to be. Nietzsche had a good analisis at the end of tragedy

You know Im figuring it out as I go along too. In the early days of my exploration into bvs I did entertain such a connection but of course it's also just as easy to lose focus and go down a different path with all the other stuff in this movie. thanks for bringing my attention to that again.
This video is so well done in explaining the depth of this movie which goes on to show how well crafted the movie actually is
I want to cry. This was beautiful
Bruhhh... I've seen tons of analysis video of bvs, but nothing comes even close to this video... This tops them all, you literally opened everyone's eyes❤️
yes, the return and what a return it is with this analysis!!
Awesome analysis. Subscribed.
Great and insightful video! I didn't know about the bagua symbol at all, that shot of Lex in the octagon always seemed a bit cheap to me as a reference to 2001 but I see now that there is more to it. Once again proving you can never doubt Snyder
God this movie is so fucking good. It's a tragedy how deeply people misinterpreted or were unwilling to even try to interpret Snyder's vision
Spreading popcorn across 7 minutes & 20 seconds is gonna be hard

That's so AWESOME ♥️ thank you for this
At 4:47 you mention "he gets afraid at the face of a perceived tyrant". Who are we talking about exactly here- Superman or Lex being afraid in regards to doomsday(the tyrant)? Lex thought he could control Doomsday, "blood of my blood", while Superman doesn't seem afraid and saves Lex's life there heroically.

Check out the expressions on both Bruce & Clark's faces, how they react to the apparent 'threat' in front of them.

honestly it is part of the whole video but I talk about so much in it that I felt it would be better to break it up into digestible pieces. Even in here I jump around a bit at least it's all about their differences and sameness in the context of bagua yin yang.
Sometimes i think that it could be impossible that Goyer and Snyder thought/intended all of this, all of these symbolism’s, meanings and deep layers as you’re uncovering them. But then again, it could be possible and not just a coincidence. What do you think? Was it all intentional? Thank you for the great content as usual

Chris Terrio was also involved in the writing of this script. Not to discredit Snyder and Goyer, but I'd bet most of the depth comes from him.
