Jameson Early It boggles my mind at how Snyder has been branded as some kind of misogynist. It’s the most bizarre thing because he always elevates the female characters in his films. Even by the end of “Sucker Punch”, I feel extremely empowered.

I've watched the film in theaters 2x and the Ultimate edition like 10+ times easy and this is the first time I've noticed Lois wearing the ring. I feel like such an idiot lol

I've also seen the movie a dozen or so times, and I've never noticed the people on the ship Superman was pulling. So many minute details were put into this movie that get overlooked because of the whole Martha sequence. Such a shame.

I actually don't mind Martha's look before she gets shot. She's not a trained fighter. Just like anyone, she'd be scared at that moment, it makes her more real. The fact she even goes for it to protect her son, makes her a natural fighter, and it's a good inspiration for Bruce to see both his parents giving it their all, despite not really knowing what to do. He was a natural fighter as well, he just spent his entire life training to become the machine he becomes later. Not a bad thing, I'd actually probably be more put off if she was entirely fearless as she was about to get gunned down, because even if she was not afraid to die (like most people would), any loving parent would be afraid that after they go down, the child is next and unprotected. If she looked unafraid, it would mean that she didn't much care for her son. It's also a nice progression. Thomas goes all out first, attempting to save his wife and son, showing he values them more than his personal well being. Martha goes next, but when she's about to go as well, that's where the realization that there is no one left afterwards to protect Bruce sets in.

Cinematography is one of the things I don't really care about in films but BvS or Zack's previous works in general woke me up to the beautiful and engaging scenes like the Knightmare scene, The God vs Man fight and etc and made care about cinematography and speaks interests in filmmaking, I really don't understand people who complain about the age old argument of "Style over substance". Personally don't understand people these days with big budget blockbusters like Marvel (sorry to start a war or comparing them) but Marvel sometimes lacks in cinematography and thinks putting bright neon colors on the sliver screen will draw an huge audience. It just was not memorable for my taste, I loved how Zack uses the cinematography in a way to embrace the already engaging story.

Love Snyder movies! He is such a underrated director. I won't be watching anymore DC or WB movies because of how WB backstabbed Snyder. He is the best. I also love people who appreciate attention to detail and the hardwork it goes into making a film. If Snyder watches this, he would really appreciate it, and know his work isn't wasted. I watched BvS and Man of Steel in Imax theater, and boy was i breathtaken by both films. I have watched both movies several times over other superhero movies, and i still can't get enough of it.

@@jtcob8486 True. But you know how Suicide Squad has NONE of the superheroes respond to the situation, despite them being in the same universe? BvS has Wonder Woman nearby (for "no reason" right?) to actually respond to the devastating situation. It's in-universe, and I think that was a nice touch.

What I loved about the opening was how Bruce running in the snow parallels his parents death, he falls when his father is shot, keeps fallen when is mother is about to be shot, and finally lands in darkness when his mother is shot

Nothing else needs to be said about this film. Is masterful and graceful.

The beauty of this last scene is the contrast with the beginning of the film, where we have several elements showing the fall and the rising ground presenting hope.

I love your name,I love BvS,This is my favorite work of Larry Fong.

This whole video was just 30 minutes of me going "oh shoot. I didn't consider that." Haha

Love this video; BvS is my favorite movie too! It's awesome how you can make a whole detailed video series about the positive aspects of this film, while haters/critics tend to just circle back to the same 2 or 3 arguments as to why it"sucks". I think most people who claim to dislike the movie are just influenced by the crowd and the critical reception. From a purely artistic and cinematic standpoint, this film is gold. I know that art is up to interpretation, so of course not everyone has to love it, but people are so close-minded to the idea of this film being good, simply because they hopped on the "Hate BvS" bandwagon, and now they refuse to consider enjoying the movie.

When Martha is shown with that gun in her face, she knows this will be a headshot, she knows she will die, and she is pretty sure Bruce will be an orphan. She will be scared. I think that humanizes her, and does not change the fact she tried to take the gun from a man to protect her son. Lovely video, I did not notice the feet.

It is a great video, but I also have found a lot of symbolisms from shot to shot within this movie. One very important thing also, is that around 27:40, the shot of lois in clark's bed reminds me of MoS, when small clarks said to his mother "the world is to big mom" to what she answers "make it smaller". What he actually did by making lois his world which was clark's last words

Thomas Wayne fist I think represents the ideals of this version of the Wayne's and creating Bruce ideals, with the ideas of being a man, a hunter, a person that cant be stopped by words but by fists.

(Part of an essay I've been working on about fathers and sons) It's interesting too how Lex's father's fist = abuse Bruce's father's fists = protection With Batman, the film explored the character’s damaged psychology by taking him to his darkest place so that he can confront his trauma and heal from it. As a child, at his parents’ funeral, Bruce Wayne is shown fallen into darkness and rescued by the Batman persona. Batman’s mask is a false salvation (“a beautiful lie”) that can never save him from his sorrow, putting on the mask is an addiction and escape. Bruce is consumed in fear, pain and anger and he intends to stay that way, personified through the display of his second “biggest failure” (his dead adopted son’s uniform) so he will always see it. Bruce’s dream at his mother's grave conveys his mindset: Bruce is struggling between himself and The Bat; it is shown breaking through the grave trying to take over. In his loss of himself, Batman no longer views criminals as human, taking to branding them like animals (this also harkens back to The Mark of Zorro, a character who inspired Batman for Bruce and also left his mark at the scene). After his childhood fall, Bruce grows up fighting against the feeling of powerlessness and gaining power - corporate power, physical power and the power to terrorize the criminals of Gotham - the “power” as Henry Cavill puts it, “to inflict justice”. Bruce thought he was going to change his exterior world by stopping criminals, but ultimately sees little fruit to his labor and feels his actions don’t have lasting impact. It is his interior world that needs to change. Thematically, the only lesson imparted by Thomas Wayne is the attempted intervention in his mugging. This model of intervention is what Bruce has modeled himself after. When he sees Superman and Zod fighting, he sees the ultimate criminal, which without his intervention could result in creating more orphans. Bruce is unwilling to accept his relative powerlessness next to Superman, which would be like accepting the death of his parents, something he’s not ready to do. Bruce convinces himself he will show Batman’s worth and honor his father’s name by killing Superman. He rationalizes this by twisting his father’s story about his lineage “they were hunters”, characterizing his dehumanization of Superman. Superman is Batman’s “white whale”: an all-powerful animal, which if left unchecked, could wipe out the entire human race. One of the main difficulties audiences had trouble understanding was the climax of Batman’s journey. Knowing that Clark knew Bruce was Batman; he probably did some background on him and was aware of what the name Martha meant to him. Saying the name out loud in the way he did: "Save Martha", wasn't coincidental. Superman says “you're letting him kill Martha”, further complicating Bruce’s conflict. This caused Batman to pause and process a lot of different things: the fact that he’s standing over someone about to kill them, that Superman is bleeding (so he does bleed), remembering his parents death, realizing his mother could not have been saved, with or without his father’s intervention, realizing that he would be making Superman an orphan - all of this dominoes in this moment. He starts to see his own father in Superman, but when Lois arrives and clarifies “it’s his mother’s name”, Bruce not only sees his father in Superman, he sees himself. Bruce finally realized he was in this vengeful, tunnel vision, has had the whole situation backwards and had become the thing he was originally fighting against. He breaks free from the shadow of his father and goes on the path to redemption. Resolving the fight, Bruce makes Clark a promise (something he previously said were useless), “I promise Martha won’t die tonight”. In saving Martha Kent, he is able to free himself of the demons that have haunted and driven him since childhood. He is also being given a chance to show the development of his skills and his work as Batman does have value. After the battle with Doomsday, Batman is visually shown stepping out into the light, signifying he is now gradually coming out of his hole and on his way to redemption. Bruce has been cynical about humanity since the death of his parents, but he now has a renewed hope, affirming at Clark’s funeral that “men are still good”. The guilt Bruce felt in not being able to help his parents as a child, he now feels for Superman: his death possibly being preventable, had he sorted himself out earlier. "I failed him in life; I won’t fail him in death.” This is how he will honor Superman’s memory, by rising to higher standards. That admission is the first of many indications at the end of the film that Bruce has made a profound character change and no longer believes hope and heroism are a beautiful lie. He is now dealing with failure is a much healthier way, recognizing it and dealing with it productively. The film ends and begins with beautiful symmetry - opening with the Waynes’ death and ending with the death of Superman: two funerals that changed Bruce Wayne’s way of thinking.

Thanks for sharing your point of view :D Refreshing to see another video enhancing a different aspect of BvS. Love this movie and Zack Snyder deserves more respect and recognition for his talent behind the camera. Style and Substance, both are present on Snyder Films eventhough not everyone can see this blinded by the Style over the merit of the Substance as well. That s the problem of those that forget movies are a form of art.

Bvs was art, period . As a artist and a true comic book fan I love all the real comic references obviously from the dark knight returns with the fight and also the timer that kg beast had was a call back to the dark knight returns , Batman's timer but also superman peace on earth .

I didn't see Batman v Superman til the Ultimate Edition came out on home media but I feel it was honestly worth the wait because I got to analyze but also enjoy the film in its entirety. The cinematogorphy was something that definitely drew my attention among other aspects of the story. As a fan of the film genre in general this really helped me to see how the filmmakers tried to express their vision of a story they obviously put a lot of passion into. Great video. Loved this analysis. Thank you for it.

I find it pretty laughable when people criticize Snyder movies for their cinematography, that he only makes movies that looks cool and cares about nothing else. Yea that is true critique I have read. I wonder how they think that a visual cool comic book will NOT be a cool looking movie :P I think I have never in my life read so much made up nitpicked criticism against any other director xD

This is incredible i thought I knew everything about BvS but I NEVER heard anyone talk about the shoes and feet shots

Finally a smart woman who loves bvs and sees Snyder's value.

That scene showing Batman stealing the Kryptonite on the security cameras is actually a quite important scene if you look at it as a motif. Batman in the beginning of BvS is always introduced above criminals when fighting them until he swoops down to confront them. This symbolizes his fall into the darkness and shows that he’s not any better than his foes. Once he has a change of heart after realizing that he’s not much different from Clark, he goes to the warehouse to save Martha. Instead of breaking in to the same floor as Lex’s henchmen, he takes the bottom floor and breaks through to the top, thus symbolizing his rise from the darkness into the light. It’s all a recap of the beginning scene where young Bruce Wayne falls into the hole and the bats take him back up.

Really great video, it makes me really happy to see others that loved this movie as I did. However, you missed one of my personal favorite shots. In the Ultimate Edition, there's a scene that takes place on the Lexcorp helipad. It's simply Lex watching the sunset, and it really makes me feel the power of what the upcoming night will bring.

I think bvs opening scene where they show Bruce waynes parents being killed,bruce falling into the well etc is one of the best opening scenes from Hollywood and it has gone unnoticed. The opening scene deserves a lot of praise for it's execution nicely supplemented by larry fong's cinematography and background score by junkie xl.jack snyder directed it beautifully.

Wow, you actually have me in tears a little. Your passion for beautoful cinematography couldn't be stronger. I love Larry Fong and the results of his artist, creative, imagination. Such gorgeous work.

The opening sequence is a play on the ending sequence. Bruce's parents are "Batman" & "Wonder Woman" saving their "son". They both die trying to stop the "monster" but save the son. Wonder Woman & Batman in the third act try to save the "son" but fail and stop the monster. This is why the conversation they have at the funeral is so important. The "parents" must avenge the "son's" death. But is the son even dead? ;) "Don't believe everything you read, son." - Bruce to Clark. Treveasy the giant It certainly seems that way on the surface I admit but as BVS taught us nothing is as it seems, JL is actually every bit as deep as the previous 2. For example Bruce's arc at it's core is about the line between true faith and fanaticism. Bruce treats Clark like a god he worships he's intolerant to anyone not living up to Superman, his entire conflict with Diana is him trying to force her to be the symbol he believes she should be. He places him above literally everyone. He is absolutely outraged when Diana suggests he isn't doing this out of his faith in Clark but rather guilt, and attacks her in a very personal way and is planning to commit suicide for his cause to martyr himself for Diana insuring his belief continues, which is the true purpose of the shoulder fixing scene, he's making Diana admit her guilt so he can martyr himself and put the same guilt he feels on Diana's shoulders insuring his Superman religion and cult (because that's what it pretty much is) continues. There's also Snyder's signature symmetry Bruce represents the side that fears Superman in BVS while he represents the side that sees him as a Christ figure in JL, this subtly continues the Superman debate from BVS. Another example is Bruce bringing back Clark in the same way Lex brought back Zod. Clark than goes to the monument where he battles the league much like Superman battled Doomsday. Doomsday bashes Superman with the names of the dead, while in JL Superman himself is the one destroying the names of the dead, symbolizing how Bruce very nearly destroyed that which inspired and gave him hope. Superman floating up to Batman mirrors him slowly approaching him in the nightmare, symbolizing that it's Bruce's own fear and paranoia that turns Superman evil, Bruce is the one he's right about, Bruce is the one to fear. I don't want to drag this on too long but those are some of the moments with Snyder's signature symmetry and symbolism, there is far more to JL than it appears.

I, too, was disappoint in the lack of depth in Justice League. You can pull some themes out of it, but it's nowhere to the level that BvS is for me.

I didn't/couldn't buy the BluRay JL nor SS.. they were relatively completely devoid of the MoS/BvS/(even WW, where Zack was still involved and also for it's somewhat lighter/different angles) Snyder guided Fong cinematogaraphic perfectionism.. More importantly the later 2 non Snyder productions emotionally moved me ZERO next to how much BvS and MoS did.

I love this video, i share your enthusiasm. This comment section is a lovely refreshing change from all the other BVS related ones, haha

Maybe the "feet motif" is a visual representation that this superhero story is very grounded

Ive thought about it. I think the idea behind them might stem from what the movie tries to achieve by the end. Throughout Man of Steel, we get a lot of references to the godlike nature and divinity of Superman and people constantly viewing his work as some holy intervention which are themes that leak over into BvS. In a huge part of BvS we see a Superman who has so many ideals placed on him, one of which is his Saviour nature, as he does unhuman things and the public impression of him is of a being of that who doesn't walk among us, gods among men. I love the way the visuals assist in telling the story of the struggle between reconciling the very human hearted part of Clark and his almost divine abilities. One of my favourite shots which link to this is the arctic scene where we start at superman feet as hes just walking in the snow showing him as a normal person but then by the end of the camera movement, we see he is pulling a ship which jars us back into the fact that he is almost unreal. A lot of the movie is spent showing Supermans story through flight; when he gets detached from people, he flies away and vice versa as a visual metaphor for him. The resolution of the struggle of superman being God or man I think is done beautifully when we see Superman as he flies to doomsday weakened by the Kryptonite spear after just being on his KNEES talking to Lois, this to tell us that he is a powerful but determined person that can be weakened like any of us but his weaknesses doesn't stop him from trying his best to do whats right.

The fact that he gets cinematographers who bring his vision(Live action comic panels) to the screen is why I fell in love with his films. First film of his I saw was the DOTD remake. I've been a fan of his since

I think this movie is accurate...not only to comic book world but to our world too...fans were divided upon seeing this version of superman on screen...some hated him just like Bruce hates him for causing so much destruction and death in mos...while many others love him just like I do because they know that if it wasn't for him, this world would have been destroyed....fans were divided to see this version of batman because he is brutal and violent, some fans hated this version because he is responsible for at least 10 deaths in this movie, some fans cannot root for this batman because of the same reason, some fans thought this version of batman was not a good guy, just like Clark did...this movie portrayed a Bruce Wayne who is not batman anymore and a Clark Kent who is not superman yet...Clark is confused, because in that world the law is helping a murderous man who dresses up as a bat and is hating a guy who is just trying to do the right thing...they have lost hope...but superman still chooses to die for this world than to watch it burn...this changes Bruce...the whole point of this movie was to show that men are still good.....but people hate what they don't understand

This is honestly tied with the Dark Knight as my favourite comic book movie.

27:35 he has those planets on his ceiling because as a child he knew he wasn't from Earth and he was always curious about where he had come from. I can 100% see him falling asleep almost every night staring up at those planets, which, to me, adds to the emotion of the scene because he did find out who he was, where he was from, and also in the process he found Lois, who was his world. If it was indeed Lois who he said was his world and not his mother ("Marrthah"). Which would be another reason Batman wanted to save Martha, to prevent the Knightmare from coming to fruition, adding to the many layers of each sequence in this film.

Majority will never accept or appreciate this kind of detailing and visual story telling because the movie's director is zack Snyder

Imagine the movie starts with the tragedy on Wayne family with a mcu style. All of the weight and sadness will be gone.

I am jealous of all the BVS merch you have. Larry Fong nailed this film; it's the best-looking comic-book film ever, as far as I'm concerned.

Lovely analysis. But I would argue at 9:00 that fear is not an automatic disqualification for bravery and fierceness. In fact, I would suppose that bravery without fear is just recklessness. It requires a certain amount of gal to stare oblivion in the face while being mortally terrified. Just my thought. I found this addition in the ultimate cut icing on top of a delicious cake.

As a beginner filmmaker I LOVED your breakdown. You see so much more than most people. I'm a huge Zack Snyder fan anyway because as aa graphic designer, I love his visual aesthetic but I couldn't really verbalize what I was seeing. THIS has given me a lot to think about on my journey as a filmmaker, so thanks.

So great to hear about your filmmaking journey! I've found that it's best to learn from people who have been doing it for a while and then, go out and shoot A LOT! I do a lot of mobile filmmaking, actually, in terms of shooting with my iPhone. Even if they aren't expensive cameras, they can get the job done if you know what you're doing! Your graphic design skills will definitely help you with your visuals! I wish you the best in your endeavors!

The most underrated director.

Hi Rebecca , It was so good to see someone has so much excitement and love for BvS as me... This movie has a really inspiring impact on my life as well. The screenplay, camera work, script, symbolism , visual effects everything stands out (y) Your videos in Why I Love Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice playlist are my personal favorites as those depicts the soul purpose of the movie. 7:30 I think Deborah Snyder has a lot influence in Zack Snyder movies. I think women feel very real in this dc franchise

This is great! Something I keep saying is that people are ignorant to the detail of Snyder’s shots. All of his shots look like panels from comic books, but they are also reenforced by the cuts. The scenes and shots in them cut together like we’re going from panel to panel. That’s something Josstice League lacked. They used so many CGI camera moves that everything felt unnatural. As for non fight scenes, the editing was a mess because of them forcing the reshot jokes into scenes like they shot a few and picked and chose which jokes to use. I’m excited for Zack Snyder’s version because the cinematography and editing will be more cohesive to it’s two predecessors.

The amount of times you said, "my favourite" is impressive.

Ha! I guess it doesn't make sense to have multiple "favorites". This was very extemporaneous and unscripted so sometimes, my vocabulary isn't all that great.

Brilliant stuff! I have a weird love of BvS as well (was lucky to see it in 70mm). But I could never have articulated it in such a knowledgable way.

I'm in Minute 2.36 and I'm already in awe. I mean I knew I about the Excalibur references but I never knew he did put it directly in the film. And I never saw it!

Critics don't even know why they hate this movie.

The cinematography is near perfection in this movie.

People has to understand the film in order to love it, cuz it ain't a basic superhero film.

It was so awesome. Which is why we Snyder fans would like Snyder to finish his vision.

I wasn't a fan of those movies. Probably because they messed with my notion of how the Batman story should be told too much. But man, Larry Fong's cinematography is so incredibly well composed I really wanted to like the movies the whole time.

When Martha saved her child..... So sad😔 ....... I love the scene very emotional 😔

Thanks for this video! Love the cinematography as well as the music; however, for me, I cannot sit thru most films. I'm just not interested in script, plot, or acting--and I cannot stand seeing the same actors (Ben A.) in every film. I only watch for the production so I can learn from these great DPs and Editors!

Some of these interpretations are a little stretch (mostly Jimmy and Lois' inexistent relationship IN THE MOVIE), but I love this film. It's a constant wallpaper, and there is so much symbolism and so much composition genius.

When I speak about Jimmy and Lois in BvS, it's moreso in comparing them to their iconic counterparts from comics and other media interpretations. This film is so well shot. Larry Fong is a personal hero of mine.

There was never going to be any focus on Lois’ relationship with some young, nerdy photojournalist that works for The Daily Planet in this movie. I thought it was cool that in this DC Universe, Jimmy Olsen was an Undercover CIA Agent posing as a photojournalist. They didn’t have to make that UC Agent anybody, but they decided to make his alias Jimmy. Also, his death had more impact that way.

This film wasn't even nominated for best cinematography.
