Ryan and others - have read all of these and 100% agree with Ryan's points (Thanks for posting this). However, earlier this year when I obtained Martin Brecht's 3 volume biography I was blown away. IMHO the amount of detail and extreme easy readability for being a German to English translation makes it the absolute Gold standard!!! You will spend $100 or more obtaining all 3 volumes but just get Vol 1 to start it takes you through Worms... I promise you will be hooked. Finally, one more strong recommendation - Please look into "Brand Luther" by Andrew Pettegree it is a Biographical sketch of Luther in the context of the history the printing history - absolutely loved it!

Yeah I agree. I studied at Munster where Brecht taught and always loved that connection with him. The books are a bit dated (only a bit) in terms of content. I came close to suggesting them but pulled back for fear of people not liking a 3-volume set as a suggestion that sounds like a single book. Maybe I'l make a video down the line on historical figures called 'The XX Best Advanced Books on So-and-So". Would be fun to make!

Padrespeaks Check out "The Trial of Jan His" by Thomas Fudge... great detail about the His affair and makes an interesting point that although it hurts us deeply - under the rule of law in Bohemia and the Holy Roman Empire of the the early 15th Century Hus was "legally" executed...

Have you read Carl Trueman's "Luther on the Christian Life"? Not a biography as such but would you recommend it ?

Yes I would. The series by Crossway was cancelled, I think in part because limiting the material to Christian living was too narrow. But Trueman is always good and I recommend it.
