hi, Im Irish and here we still use the phrase "the devil a ", having meaning like the American expression "He's a Puritan, NOT!" . So "Devil a Puritan", or in our accent (Quiet Tudorish sounding still in 2017) "divil the puritan" means I believe there is not the remotest chance he is a purtain. its like a sarcastic negation. it is archaic and it is an oxymoron in most cases, but i love the linguistic connection to the past.

I'd love a follow up on Shakespeare and the theology of grace in "Measure for Measure." Just saying.

I don't know how true this is, but I read that the modern image of Father Christmas as a jolly old fat man and the embodiment of 'good cheer to all men' were in part propaganda against the puritans attempt to ban 'pagan' festivities.

Puritanism takes a bunch of stuff the Bible never even mentions (dancing, gambling, etc) and anathemizes it.

Omega - Yes, it took away the concepts of joy and celebration - and banned us from eating mince pies - which they deemed as being a tad too 'popish' - and we all know what the likes of 'Rev' Ian Paisley thinks about 'popery'! If I ever meet up with my ancestor Samuel Skelton 'First minister at Salem, colonial Massachusetts', hopefully in Heaven; I will quiz him on just what the heck he was thinking in choosing 'Puritanism'!

Absolutely. You might say that the issue of these types of portraits of Puritanism in pop culture are the impression, not the reality. There were all kinds of Puritans, some more radical, others not. Historians have attempted to define a group called 'Moderate Puritans', but the name isn't helpful and sounds oxymoronic. But there were all kinds. There were also Anglicans who were sympathetic to Puritans in many ways, though unwilling to fight about it. In the end, only a very small percentage were ever really 'puritanical' in the pejorative sense.

thats good to know, as an irish presbyterian its probably best for me to know more about our spiritual forefathers back in mainland Britain on the topic of strains of puritans in england, where there any english presbyterians? i ask this because the Westminster confession is Presbyterian in polity, while most puritans seem to be congregationalist historically. so were some of the westminister divines english presbyterians? and if so? what happened to this particular strain of puritanism?

Yeah I think my mind has a large collection of artificial separations (Shakespeare over here, Puritans over here) that keep breaking down. :)

I have come to the conclusion that Shakespeare was probably a Catholic. Thoughts?

Well, probably more conservative than the average Puritan, no doubt. Most people who looked at the Puritans cynically would appear Catholic, just because there weren't any clear alternatives. A devout Royalist and Anglican would seem very Catholic to us today.

Howard - Indeed, even Luther began to become concerned that he had spawned a monster, and that Henry VIII was clutching a rosary the day he died. The issue of 'authority' is something that 'Protestantism' has not managed to address - just who has the God given right to interpret the scriptures, tradition, and Jesus' words and life. Did Jesus speak with one voice and one meaning, or did He speak, in one sense, rather like the devil, with many variations and many tongues and meaning? 'Protestantism' has spawned so-far at least 33,000 going 35,000 variants, with practically everyone appearing to be their own authority, interpreter and 'pope'.
