Jan Hus (c. 1372 - 6 July 1415), often referred to in English as John Hus or John Huss, was a Czech priest, philosopher, early Christian reformer and Master at Charles University in Prague. After John Wycliffe, the theorist of ecclesiastical Reformation, Hus is considered the first Church reformer, as he lived before Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli. Hus was a key predecessor to Protestantism, and his teachings had a strong influence on the states of Western Europe, most immediately in the approval of a reformist Bohemian religious denomination, and, more than a century later, on Martin Luther himself. He was burned at the stake for heresy against the doctrines of the Catholic Church, including those on ecclesiology, the Eucharist, and other theological topics. After Hus was executed in 1415, the followers of his religious teachings (known as Hussites) rebelled against their Roman Catholic rulers and defeated five consecutive papal crusades between 1420 and 1431, in what became known as the Hussite Wars. A century later, as many as 90% of inhabitants of the Czech lands were Hussites. Although the Czech Republic was the site of one of the most significant pre-reformation movements, there are only few Protestant adherents; mainly due to historical reasons like persecution of Protestants by the Catholic Habsburgs, restrictions during the Communist rule, and also the ongoing secularization.

What are the early sources for this story? And how do we know those sources are false or real? If we say they are false what evidence to we present that they are false or vice versa? There is also a story in the Orthodox Christain or in the eastern Christian Church, that John Hus said [while been burnt] that a white swan will fly one day one hundred years from now on and no one will be able to stop that swan. Presumably, referring to Luther. There are two different versions of this story.

I wish you had also addressed the legend that Luther took his priestly vows face down on the floor of a church, under which floor was buried the bones of the RC leader who had condemned Hus to death.

Dr. Reeves - thank you for sharing! I was unaware that this prophecy by Hus was urban legend. Just so I'm clear, this "In 100 years" quotes was kind of invented later on by Luther?

Can you recommend any books that cover the effect of the reformation on central Europe? I currently live in Slovakia and have read one history that says that almost 70% of this area was protestant shortly after the time of Luther. I assume that is because the nobility claimed to be protestant. Now around 60% claim to be Roman Catholic and around 7% claim to be Lutheran.

Can you comment on whether or not the 95 theses were actually nailed to a church door in 1517? My history prof says it doesn't. Do we actually know one way or the other?

Yes, but isn't it fair to say that the existence of Hus and his ministry anticipated Luther and the Reformation? That is quite a bit different than suggesting that Hus and his contemporaries anticipated the inevitability of reformists challenging the church, but as we look at it through the lens of history is it fair to interpret Hus in this way? (I don't profess to have the detailed knowledge of these historical events to make such a judgement. I'm asking if my assumptions from a more general knowledge of this period are more or less correct or are they too simplistic.)

Thanks again Dr. Reeves. Inspiration and bravery in a deadly environment. I assume the phrase, “Your goose is cooked!” resulted from execution “by fire” of Jan Hus. In some paintings, I see a white goose standing behind Martin Luther. Is this a myth or the beginnings of Gospel ideas in similar denominational movements?

I'm curious you keep on making reference to the Czech regions here, do you believe that Hussite ideas were rooted in a uniquely Czech or Bohemian experience or do you use this merely as an almost geographical description and that it was locality rather than commonality that allowed the Hussite teachings to become popular within the Kingdom of Bohemia?

Declan - The Kingdom of Bohemia is probably the best you can go with while keeping it simple. /Or just use german Böhmen/. Nations were region, not ethnic based. Especially when you are talking about HRE.

It's good to see these myths dispelled. I would only add that another argument for the fact that Hus never predicted Luther can be the witness account of Hus's trial and execution by Matej of Mladenovic (Hus's student who traveled with Hus to Constance and recorded most of the events that took place). The prophecy was at times phrased, "you will cook the goose today (meaning of the name Hus) but 100 years you will try to cook a swan (supposedly Luther's crest) but won't be able to."

so, we have here an instance of pulpit myth/history/soap opera - the sort of bilge the pastors make up because they are historians like I am an astronaut

Jantes Inferno Arius could have said the same thing : Oh no... you say I'm a heretic but Christ promised his church would never fall into heresy and the gates of hell..... etc That's exactly why Jesus said they come in sheep's clothes. That's how all heretics including the RCC masquerade the truth.
