The new Porsche 911 GT3 has been kicked even further into the "motorsport" arena, brilliant at the limit but harsh and abusive when being used every day. But the new 911 GTS isn't for pretending you're a racing driver: it's the most optimized 911 for engaged, fast, and fun street driving, without the harshness of the GT3. On the press launch in Atlanta, I drove the new GTS for eight hours and almost three hundred miles, and finished the drive relaxed and refreshed, just how I'd want a 911 to be. And the performance, friends, is certainly there.
Porsche Cars, North America wanted me to drive the new 911 GTS so badly they flew me to Atlanta, put me up in a nice hotel, fed me some food, and gave me an insured, fueled car to romp on for a day.

So true! Even when it seemed like they were close, the holders wouldn’t let the drinks sit low enough. So they were top heavy and could fall out! Also not wide enough for a lot of cups/bottles. My Ford Transit connect work truck ironically has great cup holders. Maybe Porsche could use them as a baseline lol

In the real world, this gts is quicker/faster than a gt3 with all that torque on hand.... the GT3 needs to be on a track or in the 7000+ rpm range to really take advantage of it. not a knock on the gt3, which is probably the perfect/best sports car currently made, more of a endorsement of the gts if you're not planning on tracking your car.

  • @tommy516

The difference is that a GT3 is a GT car and will hold 90-110% of its value while this will depreciate like a Base...you really don't need more than a base, unless you want a manual...its probably the only trim you can get/order at this point too. Its ridiculous.

Speccing with buckets and no back seats is borderline insanity. I daily-ed a 997 GTS with buckets (Sport buckets) for 3 years and later my 991RS with the LWB. If you're not going to track it, the buckets make no sense. Made me sell both. Get the Sport seats, enjoy your best life.

I had the chance to compare the 911 Turbo S and the 911 GTS at a track. To my surprise, the GTS perforrmed far better than the Turbo S. It felt lighter, more precise, and it handled leagues better than the 4WD Turbo S. I was expecting the much more powerful and more expensive 911 Turbo S to be my clearr favorite, but it was not the case. The only thing the 911 Turbo S has on the GTS is straight line speed. It felt about 5%-10% faster than the GTS in that regard, but not as much as I expected. The track we drove on did not have long straights, so the additional power of the turbo S wasn't as useful. I wished that I had the chance to drive a GT3 that day, but it wasn't in the cards.

It's easy as a reviewer to forget why we buy these cars, or at least many of us. It's refreshing to see a review that acknowledges that relatively few folks will track their car, and that driving pleasure is something we ought to be able to enjoy everyday, not just on track days. Your review, Matt, of the 992 Turbo S where you mentioned getting 5.2 miles from home before being pulled over by the local authorities and talked about "just going to jail faster" is testimony to just how capable ALL the newer sports cars are today. As the owner of a far less capable 997 GTS, I do believe the GTS is the Goldilocks model in Porsche's model lineup. Coastal and canyon roads are calling...

Was thinking the same thing. The more you know about race cars you realise you don't want anything like it on a road car. You only want the 'impression' of it (sound, response, not the harshness) The two personalities cannot be mixed without compromise but Porsche is incredibly good at mixing the qualities and offering something for every taste. My only problem is, I can't afford any of them, not without sacrificing my retirement fund anyhow.

Matt, as the owner of a 991.2 GT3 6MT I cannot disagree with you more about the shifter. The shifter is absolutely ideally setup for the engine, and the instant engine response and light flywheel makes for fantastic shifts. With modern engine rev-hang so prevalent, it's a huge breath of fresh air. In 10-20 years, when PDK units start breaking with no spare part availability, the good old-fashioned manual transmission and tried-and-true technology will not only be easier to maintain but also cheaper to service. Not to mention that a properly driven manual transmission can last a lifetime. The PDK may feel good now but when they fail, and they do, they will be an absolute nightmare.

I strongly prefer manual transmissions too, but Porsche keep making parts for old vehicles long after they're discontinued. Given that you can order parts from the dealer for an old 911SC, it's unlikely that PDK parts will become unavailable, especially given that the transmission will probably still be in production in some form by 2040 (everyone knows that cars aren't going all-electric, despite what manufacturers are pledging for reasons relating to ESG') Also, there are plenty of 997.2's with PDK's. with over 200k miles with no issues.

I’d give up the “lightweight” package for the Aero Kit. You can still get the acoustic lightweight glass separate. Also aventurine green is stellar on the 992

I love the Aero kit! I think it looks great and will age well. Does not seem to be a popular option/package. I am yet to see one in the wild.

Aero kit needs a better looking rear wing. Needs to be longer and curve up at the ends or have end plates. Too plain looking wing.

Sport Design package looks so much better than the stock front bumpers. Also, good to see the 3rd brake light cleared. It looked like a hemorrhoid with it red.

Another awesome review. Nice to see a review where the host doesn’t waste 3/4 of the video talking about the new PCM etc. You always get right to it, which is what we want. The exhaust sounds great, love the manual, and the colour (Carmine?). I owned a 2015 991 GTS and loved it, but the evolution of this model, especially the increase in torque compared to my 2015, has me thinking about trading my Cayenne Turbo for yet another 911.

Not sure why several reviews nowadays say the GT3 isn’t comfortable enough as a daily driver. There are very few roads that are a bit of a struggle, otherwise I’v no issues at all. Done about 13.500 km in 8 months in my Touring.
