The 2020 Lexus GS-F isn't great -- but it could be, if you buy it in a few years. Today I'm reviewing the GS-F, and I'm going to show you why it's not so great, and why you'll want to wait to buy one. I'm also showing you all the quirks and features of the GS-F, and I'm going to drive the GS-F to show you what the Lexus GS-F is like on the road.

As a M5 and C63 owner, all the things Doug mentioned that makes the German cars technologically superior to the GS-F are the exact features that ironically makes them unreliable. "not all that high performance" 477 HP from a high revving 5.0L V8 with no forced induction... I would also argue that the GS-F is not actually competing with the M5/E63s, but rather the M-performance and 43-line variants of those platforms. Lexus never developed a turbocharged V8 engine for any of their cars, and they don't seem interested in getting into that market because of cost and lack of clout.

Wouldnt you rather sacrifice that horsepower to get a car that is practically bulletproof and will still be on the road after 10 years with no problems? All this high numbers crap is to impress people who know nothing about cars so they can brag about their high horsepower. I hope I can find a great used GS F. This NA V8 will outlast any junk piece of crap that BMW or German dumpster fire VW pukes on. Shame. Now ES is going to lose NA V6 as well, the last run of NA engines at Lexus are now almost dead. I’ve had a 2013 GS 350 since 2013. Through 7 years I’ve put over 100,000 miles on mine. I can tell you one bad flaw in this model is that the servo motor for the air conditioning system has broken down three times in 7 years. I was lucky the first 2 times as my car was under warranty till 2018 and it was fixed for free but in January 2020 it broke for the third time and to replace it with labor cost me $1400 US. It’s a very badly designed motor. It’s hidden behind the dashboard, so the company has to literally take apart the entire car from the inside to fix it. According to the dealership it’s a very common issue in this generation of the GS and ES models. Servo motor basically controls the air of the cabin and when it breaks down by default the vents stay open permanently so basically your car does not cool the interior at all. It’s terrible because I live in Dubai and temperatures reach way over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the only big issue I faced with my car.

  • @rahuldaryanani7292

@Frankie Basile the heat has been there for years. I have other vehicles as well and they don't face this problem, I have a Honda accord 2014 with over 130,000 miles on it now and it has never given me a problem like my GS has. I know it sucks but that's the reality, luxury doesn't always mean better quality. In fact in my experience luxury cars actually give you more problems over the years because of complex options in them. If you ever owned a Mercedes-Benz or BMW for 5+years, you will definitely face a few hiccups. Regarding the problem in the GS, its an extremely common issue in this generation because of the materials inside the servo motor are 90 percent plastic, countries like Japan and majority of the states in USA don't have extreme heat conditions like dubai. So a company as big as lexus can't customise internal parts for different countries, that will cost them hundreds of millions for changing just the outer shell of a servo motor in an already established production line plus plastic is obviously much cheaper to work with.

Poking your index finger at a screen you aren't holding in your hand isn't easy at all, especially when your focus lies elsewhere. Not to mention that you need to shift in your seat to reach that screen in almost every vehicle. Remote touch is always comfortably in reach.

Matt from Carwow also compared it to an M2 in drifting and the GS won easily. @@Z06ified The car's handling and sound haven't got any worse. It is a previous generation car so I do agree that it's not the right new car for many people now but this review still seems oddly biased- I'm a Doug fan and it surprised me. Bear in mind that he rated the RCF handling better than the GSF which I'm not aware of anyone else ever having done- it seems pretty unanimous elsewhere that the GSF is far superior to the RCF and yet Doug clearly disagrees (which he's entitled to do but it's very surprising). He also loved the sound and didn't complain about the power of the same engine in the LC500 but not in this, yet it's virtually the same (10bhp more, same sound). It's not just about other brands, the review seems harsh compared to even other Lexus models.

Majority of the comments seem opposite to your review Doug, that is a beautiful car hands down, tons of power and that exhaust note is awesome 😎 I would own this now as opposed to the equivalent bmw or Mercedes as i have owned 3 bmw’s as they spent as much time at the mechanics as they did at home ! Frustrating and expensive, Japanese = reliability , that is a cool car 👍

Always interesting to hear "not enough power" "slow" (4.6 Seconds to 60) when you are not allowed to drive faster than 75 miles :) Writing from Germany.

Well you can accelerate super fast to 75 miles(+ exceed 10 mph) and have short burst runs here and there and there are some places where you can break the rules without risk of consequences.

*I’m American and this was explained to me a while back.* Speed Limits are way lower in the US so way more people are inclined to break them, so the theory is that you get the fastest car you can and let it run!

He’s talking when compared to the competition. He’s also saying it because performance sedan buyers have great German sedan choices that give you lots more power. Also we have 47,000 miles of interstate Highways vs 8000 in Germany with the Autobahn. With 500 percent more highways in the U.S., you have a better chance of finding an open road.

I think this thing is pretty amazing. You get peerless quality, very attractive styling, understated performance cues, very solid power, great acceleration, surely good resale, best fit and finish in the game.... besides the MSRP, what is not to like here? Who buys these things brand new anyway? Doug has a very consistent anti-Lexus bias for some reason. Btw that exhaust note is wonderful. In a world of forced induction I applaud automakers with the balls to still make great NA engines. There is nothing like the note of a NA V8. I understand it’s on the way out, but it’s great to see one of the last ones. This was never meant to be a M5 competitor or AMG beater...that’s obvious. M2 Comp owner here btw.

I don’t even think money is the issue with unreliable cars. If a car doesn’t function, it’s not serving it’s purpose and the owner can’t enjoy it. For example, the Giulia QV. Great car that most wouldn’t own because it’ll be spending more time in the shop than on the road.

I have a 16 GS-F that I bought new. I love it and get lots of compliments from strangers. It’s quick enough for me and the interior is beautiful. I bought it mainly because of Toyota’s reliability. I also have a 2002 Sequoia with 116k miles on it and it’s running strong. I traded my 2006 BMW 530i in for my GS-F. Started having issues with that thing.
