I wonder if the future will see a return of more tactile controls. A lot of what I see coming out now seems flashy and cool, but in the end is neither as reliable nor as easy to use as tactile controls like shift levers, climate control knobs etc. When I'm driving and want to turn my fan speed up, I can do it without looking away from the road or taking my hand off the shifter, because it's a big knob right near my hand when it's on the shifter. I can just feel where it is. You can't say the same about almost any modern climate control, including the one in this car, because there's so little tactile feedback. You can't tell if you have your hand in the right place, and when you're driving, all of this is a real safety concern. People staring at a touch screen for 30secs to find the volume or looking down at a centre console to locate a climate slider thingy is a little concerning. So eventually, I think manufacturers will realise this and bring a lot of old school controls back. I notice Doug reviewed a couple of new cars that have moved the climate controls out of the touchscreen and back onto the centre console, and I think this trend will continue.

Doug, you would think after reviewing the ISF, RCF, GSF, all these years & now the IS500 that you would finally realize leaving the transmission in normal auto mode like you did is Lexus's "comfort" mode & provides the slowest shifts. Manual + Sport button is what amps up the shift times to what all the car magazines were raving about back then. The IS's interior has aged well. Everything is properly positioned and very convenient to use. True, they could've ditched the touch-pad in favor of a wireless charging pad... but that's kind of a non issue for me. I've driven cars with wireless chargers and never really used them. I tend to keep a factory charge cable handy for Android Auto use anyways, and the phone obviously gets charged when/if it's plugged in. Plus... this new IS has a touch screen, which Doug failed to mention. Sidenote: As lovely as this V8 sounds, it's a shame he didn't really investigate this vehicle much. He should've known that the little dial on the left side with the driver's controls (360 camera, blind spot warning, etc) is actually a volume control for the piped in sound - so you can dial the artificial sound up or down/off.

Powered the car off powered the car on when we would try to go to neutral the N light just blinked and it wouldn't come out of park. That has a hand gear shifter but it's just an actual joystick it doesn't really connect to anything. It's one of those Chrysler joystick style shifters. I mostly disagree with this review. I own a '15 IS350 myself, and the interiors look almost exactly the same, so Doug was totally right there that a lot of the car is starting to look dated. I think Doug is missing the point of the car that this is something you can drive for the next 10 years with relatively few issues. This car is going to become incredibly important when all cars move to 4 cylinders or fully electric, and it's most likely going to stand the tests of time. Obviously the year that it's releasing, being right now, it's hard to recognize its importance. However, in the long run this car is going to be hugely important, and having it be designed by Lexus/Toyota is great to hear because you know it's good for 150k+ miles.

The "look at me, look at me" boy racer types will buy the BMW anyway, so they are not the target audience, this car is filling a niche in the market that the European manufacturers are ignoring - this car is more likely to be cross shopped against the likes of a Mustang than an M3.

Yes, it might be a bit slower than a 2.0t small sedan that I drive every day, but with rear wheel drive IS gives another level of driving experience. Most “disadvantages” Doug listed in this video will be a reason to buy IS500 for someone. Lexus may be targeting those who are looking for C63 w204 is perfect state.

The shift lever being an actual lever instead of buttons or a wheel is a good thing. Change my mind. Seriously though, the only good thing about ditching the traditional shift lever for modern alternatives is aesthetics. Call me old fashioned, but I love the _feel_ of a lever (or even better, a stick) and it's more connected than buttons or a wheel. Kind of like turning a key versus a push start button; it's a minor thing that is part of the experience of driving.

I personally love this car, and especially love that it is NOT an IS-F. It reminds me of the old W124 E500 in a way. Definitely a future unicorn - confidently subtle, even relatively demure in a good way. A big japanese V8 is always a good thing, and it has the ultimate "quirk" for this segment: reliability. I'm not even someone who necessarily prioritizes reliability - but in this case, it adds to the unique sense of ease that this car radiates.

I’d argue the E500 was at least updated for its time in terms of tech/interior quality, the IS500 is a decade behind… If they had introduced an updated Interior for the IS500, and then trickled it down to the 250/350 models after 18-24 months, I would bet the IS500 sales would be exponentially better than what they will turn out to be. For context, I previously owned a W211 E500 and currently own an ISF - would 100% sell my ISF and buy an IS500 if it weren’t for the lousy interior/outdated technology.

Just correcting some statements made by Doug so that there isn’t anymore added confusion about this car than there already is… 1. Lexus considers this a 4th gen redesign. It is not a facelift. Although the platform for this car is shared w/ the 3rd gen that was sold from 2014-2020, the body of the 2021+ is completely new. No panel is the same. 2. This is not supposed to be an M3 competitor. The German compact sport sedans of that category are now pushing over 500+hp. Lexus has already stated that this is an S4, M340i, C43 AMG competitor. He says that @ first but then goes back to comparing it to an M3. 3. The rear sunshade is for infants in rear facing seats because the roof line & rear window are @ such a low angle. 4. If you put the transmission in (M)anual and Sport+ it is fast. Those conditions have to be met in order for it to shift quickly as intended. It is programmed to have a shift delay in (D)rive under power. It is also programmed to be a little clunky and give you that shift shock to give it the feel of a sequential manual transmission. This exact transmission is the reason why most manufacturers are going from DCT back to Auto trans.

Interiors of cars age terribly as it is but if you are already using a dated design, the resale value will be impacted quite heavily.

Yousef actually Hiro has a point there also the is500 can’t do better than the isf because it’s not a specialty performance car, I mean if a 6cyl BMW can embarrass an isf then what do u think it’ll do the is500? It’s just a V8 and it’s porky which is gonna affect overall performance. As for “value” for an isf to be worth as much as an M3 or AMG of that Era it would have to be one that’s clean all original super low mile bone stock not riced out. To cost more it would have to be compared to an M3 or AMG with higher miles. Go look at a 2008 CLK 63 black series and what it commands there’s not an isf on planet that will ever cost that much even if you found an isf with zero miles. Lexus is just an entry level brand and truth be told they do copy and imitate the better German brands, the logic lexus fans use is equivalent to someone saying a knock off Louis Vuitton hand should cost more than the real thing. I think that’s what Hiro was alluding to, not necessarily bashing lexus because he’s made good comments on it before.

That's what I'm saying bro. I swear that by now, he hasn't figured it out just because he's stubborn. Half touch for a short signal if you're changing lanes, full touch for a full signal. Half touch opposite direction to cancel. In practice, it's brilliant to use and I hate that BMW and other manufacturers ditched it.

It's because beyond the V8 the car is laughably old and shoehorning the V8 in their has messed up the styling balance. It LOOKS front heavy now and the rear looks like it's squatting at the same time. It's also slower than some of the 6-cylinder competition and the chassis isn't a true F product able to handle the extra power. On paper this car is a dream, but in reality it's very lackluster.

I'm so glad Lexus keeps making "emotional" cars instead of trying to outdo the competition in every spec, trying to cater to all the bench racers who never buy new cars anyways. Lexuses (Lexi?) are never the best on paper, but once you get behind the wheel, you start to understand the appeal.

I agree with what he says about the transmission, my parents have a ‘15 GS350 that I drive from time to time. The tranny really limits its ability, it hangs gears a bit too long and the paddle shifting is more of a recommendation. I know they want to make their cars as smooth as possible but I would personally like speed and punch vs super smooth.
