The tomatoes thing also stems from the middle ages, where people were eating tomatoes and getting really sick. In reality the problem was the lead plates people were eating off of, and the acid in the tomatoes was leaching more lead than other foods, but people blamed the tomatoes and not the lead.

For edible flowers: Always look up if a flower is safe to eat. I've used roses, lavender, elderflower, etc in my cooking/drinks and they can be wonderful additions to your cooking, however, much like mushrooms, you need to be careful that you only eat what you know is safe to eat.

A thing I’d like to really stress about rice: Make sure you only store your leftover rice for two days maximum! Leftover rice, pasta and other grains are at a high risk of growing listeria germs if kept in refrigerators or freezers for too long. Listeria can also spread to other food close to the rice under the right circumstances as well. Listeria is a nasty illness which can cause fever, body aches, fatigue, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, loss of balance, and even seizures. Be safe out there y’all

Woah...I didn't know that. I thought it was just 'dont leave it out for too long, make sure it stays in the fridge.' I'll have to talk to my dad about this. @@frosted_glaceon5513 One way you can kind of work around this that I did not mention in my original post is by microwaving your rice. If you happen to leave your rice in the fridge for a day or two longer than it should be left in there, don’t panic. Most germs like the ones I mentioned die when food is reheated to a steaming hot temperature (usually 1 to 2 minutes will achieve this result). Hopefully that helped a bit, I realize a lot of people worry about food waste and thankfully there’s ways around that problem while also remaining safe.

I doubt that I ever had listeria, because I never got symptoms that were severe enough, but with the rice, I'm pretty sure I now know why I felt sick in the stomach and had the runs for a few days when I was in Thailand. I even remember getting a rice dish from one of those corner stalls, that you saw more locals buying from than tourists, and those are the type of places where food was likely kept at room temperature for longer periods of times, which is also why tourists, including me, ate at restaurants the rest of the time. At some of the restaurants there, the Thai food was very good.

@Carterb92 right, actually I watched one of his videos the other day and he was kind of snarky about the United States. I get we all have biases, and the Media in the U.S. is a complete joke. I stopped watching the “news” during the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. First of all I did not like either candidate AT ALL lol, but I was seriously trying to research who I should vote for since I was nonpartisan. The media was largely in favor of Clinton, and that became evident once I started researching her political career that traced back to her involvement in Watergate 😧 So as much as I wanted to live to see a female president I did NOT want to vote for a documented murderer. Anyway then the opposite happened when I researched who I perceived as the most offensive, unpolished, irritating and off putting man I’d ever heard speak 😂 couldn’t find any accusations of inappropriate behavior that had been found credible, the media kept claiming he was racist, then as I researched I found he was favored by the NAACP, many black owned businesses and leaders of other black organizations. Racism is a very large concern of mine, I cannot tolerate treating people as if their skin tone magically determines their character. Anyway. Sorry this became political TL:DR, American media makes us sound like a bunch of insane, uneducated tools, and the world all thinks we are all stupid because of our current president.

  • @SomeAngels

    @SomeAngels

As someone Who suffers from anaphylaxis (Insect Stings) I fully agree. If the child is old enough and the parent informed the school that the child understands and knows how to use their EpiPen, they, just like anyone with severe anaphylaxis should always have their EpiPen within arms reach, seconds really do matter with allergies that severe a child can live and die based on a 30 sec. or one minute delay. I had such a difficult time in school because I have to carry an EpiPen, and two emergency drugs. One for my heart condition and one for epilepsy in case I feel an aura before a seizure. The entire point of rescue medication is that it is designed to prevent a serious health crisis that is imminent, you may not have time to get a teachers attention, get to or have the office notified and wait while the nurse is notified gets your medication and gets it to your location. This policy required me to be hospitalized due to not getting my EpiPen on time on one occasion. And probably the worst occurrence was when I was having a seizure aura and required my meds to stop it, I don’t know what the holdup was but it took over four minutes, and I had to have a full convulsive seizure in front of my entire class in middle school. Kids at school either not understanding the condition or just being mean as they are at that age teased and were very mean and said horrible awful things to me after they witnessed that. I’m 31 and to this day I remember one particularly mean girl who told the entire cafeteria that it looked like a Re**rd trying to ummm “play with themselves” (if you can’t tell I cleaned up the language of it). Then she proceeded to imitate the muscle spasms in the eye rolling while standing up and making it look as ridiculously goofy as possible. I will never forget an entire cafeteria of 250+ students, laughing at my condition, thinking to myself if they had to live one day with this disorder and receive the treatment that comes along with it they would never laugh about it again. So responsible informed children should absolutely have a right to carry emergency and rescue medication‘s at school. They could easily exempt legal medicine that fell under that category from Zero Tolerance. 😢 that experience left an emotional scar on me, but it made me strong as an adult and I have always tried to educate others who are misinformed, and I never back down anymore from standing up for my civil rights & medical rights under the ADA.

Fun story about Mushrooms: While on a one week field trip in College, one of the guys suddenly stood up late at night and exclaimed that he was going to eat a fly agaric mushroom. And with that he disappeared into the night. We called the teacher and went looking for the guy. When we found him, he had just straight up bitten into a fly agaric mushroom without cleaning it or picking it from the ground. And though they are not that dangerous, I would never recommmend you to eat them just out in the wild. This guy is the perfect example, because we did need to call an ambulance to get his stomach pumped. The worst part? I studied Biology. And one more thing for the ghost peppers: do NOT drink water after eating one. Water makes the pain worse. Drink milk.

To clarify, as a biochemist: the chemical that most directly gives peppers their spice is capsaicin. Capsaicin is largely non-polar, and thus hydrophobic. Water will pass down the gullet and take some but not all of the spice-chemical some but not all of the way down your throat. Imagine you have an oil spill, you try to hose it down with water, and instead the oil just covers more area? Same exact thing, only the oil causes you physical pain. Milk is a solution of water and various bipolar/amphipathic fatty compounds. Hence the milk "grabs" the capsaicin and is thus washed down. Kinda like soap does with dirt when washing your hands or clothes.

And I would like to also discuss chicken nuggets because they're another example of food which is demonised for this. I'd actually much prefer the less desirable parts of animals be made into something delicious than to just be wasted.

Yeah, an animal did die to give us food to eat, might as well use all we can. Hotdogs are fine, as long as they're all beef, IMO, but chicken nuggets, especially those from McDonalds, just disgust me. Chik-Fil-A, on the other hand, use sliced chunks of whole breast meat, not a batter made of "mechanically separated chicken." It's the texture, spongey and weird, like bologna or uncooked tofu.

(I even used to be allergic to soy, eggs, and almonds) I have to carry an epi-pen wherever I go god forbid I accidentally eat something I'm allergic to... Whenever I have a burger at a restaurant or something, I eat it like a steak. No bun or anything like that on the burger. Yes it sucks but people are now trying to make hypoallergenic alternatives to these foods. There's these brands of vegan ice cream and cheese I eat, and for my peanut allergy, I eat Sunflower seeds and sunflower butter instead. Honestly, thank you for covering how peanuts can impact people like me. I really appreciate it. :) P.S. I think you should do cartoon lists again soon. Tomatoes and potatoes are members of the nightshade family, that actually allows them to be grafted together to produce both potatoes and tomatoes as a crop ( Though apparently it prevents both from producing very large fruits, which makes sense, they actually are sold grafted together though, I think they're called ketchup and fries plants ), so, technically speaking, they are kinda poison. At least, they are related to poisonous plants. Gotta love people breeding plants to create strange mutations and hybrids of something once deadly into something relatively harmless

I’m surprised that Casu martzu, a sheep milk cheese that’s mixed with live fly maggots, or fugu, a sushi dish made from pufferfish, didn’t make this list. As a side note, tomatoes were once believed to be poisonous because they are a member of the nightshade family (which does contain a lot of poisonous plants).

I mean, Fugu is fine as long as the person preparing is experienced and knows what their doing and the maggot cheese is probably fine as the maggots would get killed by stomach acid.

@@tempestzeta11 The serving of fugu is so heavily regulated that very few sushi get the training to prepare fugu. Pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, which pretty much destroys your neurons ability to communicate with each other. If neurons can’t send & receive messages, they’re not able to move your muscles. So just lay motionless until you die of asphyxiation. Some food scientists have claimed that it is possible for maggots to survive the stomach’s acids and feed off of your intestines.

Hey Strider, my throat gets tight anytime I eat a lot of melon fruits (watermelon, cantaloupe, and my mom was a primary consumer of cantaloupe and always fed it to us for dessert). Is that considered part of that anaphylactic allergic reaction you mentioned? Also, I once had an abscessed tooth extracted, and ever since I've been afraid to eat popcorn because the pieces that usually get stuck in your teeth could have gotten stuck in the gap where the tooth was and would cause all kinds of discomfort.

At my elementary school I remember peanuts being banned because there were 2 students in the school that would die if exposed to peanuts! The school didn't fluff it up either. If a student asked why peanuts were banned the teachers would tell them out right that there were 2 students that could die if exposed! Which in hindsight I really like as it helped me learn to respect people with such allergies at a young age and that it can be extremely serious!

I actually remembered why people (specifically European people) thought the tomato was dangerous. Back in the day they used to eat tomatoes on plates that included lead. Since tomatoes are acidic fruits, they would pick up the lead from the plates and become extremely poisonous, which obviously killed them. That would then make people believe that the tomato was poisonous.

There used to be a popular math activity for younger kids involving marshmallows. They were supposed to estimate how many marshmallows they could fit into their mouth and then try to actually shove that many marshmallows in there. I honestly could not go to a teacher training for several years without having this presented. This lasted until a child participating in this activity unfortunately died. Then everyone was horrified that this was a strongly encouraged math activity.

As someone who loves food, I have some thoughts on many of the ones listed in this video, to start with: ghost peppers. I personally enjoy spicy and hot food on occasion, but I'm definitely not crazy enough to want to try one of the hottest foods known to man (it's also somehow not that surprising that someone found a way to weaponize them). I'm also quite fond of peanuts (and most nuts in general, really), to the point where when my dad used to have me help him with the houses he worked on fixing up for his job, he used to joke that they could pay me in peanuts! But more to the point, I work in a bakery in a grocery store myself, and we have several items that contain peanuts and other types of nuts in them, and because we bake many of the items we sell in-store, we all have to be conscious about cross contamination, which can happen if a food comes into contact with another food that contains an ingredient that can cause an allergic reaction (this can also occur if a person's hands aren't properly washed, too), so I'm very well aware of the dangers of peanut allergies. I also am very fond of mushrooms (I'm the only person in my household who actually likes them), but I would never trust myself to pick wild ones because I'm aware of the danger of accidentally picking and eating a poisonous one.

Yeah, but a lot of other foods can be dislodged from the mouth/throat or broken apart enough to let a little air in with enough effort. The danger that’s _specific_ to marshmallows is that they don’t dissolve, and they deform into & stick to each other, leaving no space for air to get through. There are other foods that can be impossible to dislodge from the throat and block off all air flow there, but not many foods create such an airtight, resistant choking hazard from the mouth.

I'm a foodie and have been a hobby chef for 15 years and here's my take on each entry. 11. I've actually made a hot sauce with ghost peppers, though I sublimated with a bunch of other milder chiles (including 3 roasted Zero Scoville bell peppers), vinegar, and a touch of sugar. The resulting hot sauce was quite mild in heat, but rich in flavor. A hot sauce coinsures even called it the best hot sauce they've ever had. There is a great deal of flavor in ghost peppers and habaneros, they just need to be tamed with acid, sugar, and bell peppers. 10. I did the chubby bunny challenge, would not recommend. However, I would recommend homemade marshmallows in smores since the point is to slowly savor the treat in a safe consumption rate. 9. I did not know that about rice, that was helpful. Future stir fries and Cajun red beans are thankful. 8. Tomatoes are members of the night shade family and are indigenous to the US. Funny this video came out just before the start of the season, and now I want a BLT. 7. Ah yes, my favorite legume. That wasn't sarcasm, I ADORE peanuts and peanut butter. The candy I make the most around Halloween is peanut brittle. For those who can eat peanuts, it is a treasure trove of fiber, B and E Vitamins, heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, and protein. And US peanut-butter lovers will be happy to know that around here, ALL peanut-butter is required by law to contain 90% peanuts. Still, the fear of a dangerous allergic reaction is overwhelming and heartbreaking. 6. Sauteed mushrooms are hands down my favorite food of all time. Alton Brown even showcased an amazing update to the dish that is significantly lower in fat than more traditional methods. My personal favorite mushrooms are oyster mushrooms. 5. Yea, non-microwave popcorn is how I avoid the issue. This way I know exactly what goes into it. For me, it's 100 grams popcorn kernels, 10 grams clarified butter/ghee, and 1/2 tsp powdered salt before popping. That last part is important since salt doesn't stick to popped popcorn. Like peanuts, popcorn is very nutritious. Being a whole grain, it has all the fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are often lost in the milling of most grain since it includes the bran and germ (not the bacterial kind of germ). 4. When it comes to edible flowers, I'm sticking with the classics: fresh ground cloves, star anis, capers, cauliflower, artichokes, and broccoli. 3. When it comes to seafood in general, always use your nose. If it smells like anything other than melons, cucumbers, or the ocean, it has probably gone bad and needs to go in the compost. As far as heavy metals go, they're generally found in aquatic animals higher up on the food chain than shellfish are. Allergies are also a HUGE fear of mine whenever food prep is in mind with these. And like peanuts, I love shellfish. Squid and crustaceans (crab, lobster, crawfish, and shrimp) offer fast lean protein. Clams, mussels, and oysters are great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids as well as important minerals. 2. Most dried kidney bean recipes I find cook the beans at a simmer for 2 hours at a minimum, so I was never in any danger when handling them. Though, be sure to check dried beans for small rocks and rinse off any dust that might be on them. 1. This, unfortunately, doesn't surprise me. I avoid hot dog eating contests like the plague and would rather take the time to make these sausages into an edible art piece that are meant to be savored. This can range from wrapping it in bacon and searing, smothering in chili and cheese, dipping in a batter for a delightful corn dog, or even as simple as decorating it with ketchup, mustard, mayo, and/or relish in a pretty pattern. I'm glad you made this list and here's to staying safe when enjoying your cuisine.
