1 in 750 million to be exact, are your odds of dying on a theme-park ride. Meanwhile, odds of dying while driving a car? 1 in 109 last time I checked. Nearly 7 million times more likely.

Sidenote; Strider got two major facts wrong about Nurburring. The first is the supposed mystery around why it only lasted four days before shuttering. It wasn't due to an explosion, it was due to Germany's weather. The ride opened in August and Germany gets very cold in September through March so the rollercoaster season in the country ended. As for why it was shuttered? If wasn't due to an explosion. Shortly after the season ended, Nurburring filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection since it's construction costs and debt were not off-set by its abysmal attendance. The amusement complex was then sold to Capricorn Entertainment who took one look at the mixed to terrible reviews of the ride and had it removed to try and create a new image for the facilit.

Speaking of your honorable mention, Strider, I’ve got a story to share. Around 100+ school music department students (myself included) were down in Orlando the last week of March. Our hotel was located only blocks away from that amusement park. The hotel itself had floors high enough (we were rooming on the top floor, the 5th) to easily see the tallest rides; the ferris wheel, the slingshot, the free fall, and plenty more. On the day that poor kid died, we arrived at the hotel at 9pm or so. I don’t know what time the incident happened, but I can say one thing for sure: I heard an awful lot of screaming for as far away as I was…

I recall an old page on ride accidents that pointed out that, by injuries and fatalities every year, the most dangerous amusement rides in existence are outdoor bouncy castles. The wind blows them away with kids inside. You're not supposed to operate them in even moderate wind, but this is routinely ignored. One of the worst ones in US history was a haunted-house fire at Great Adventure that was reminiscent of the Ghost Train incident described here. I'd say most roller-coaster deaths are probably of park employees who are hit by the coaster train when, for whatever reason, they enter a restricted area while the train is running (often to retrieve a loose item dropped by an insistent rider (DON'T be that person) or as a result of a miscommunication during grounds maintenance). That happens a lot. But every so often, you get a really inexcusable one resulting from neglected maintenance, like the Edmonton Mindbender or Quimera derailments, or the one on the Disneyland Big Thunder Mountain Railroad where the whole "locomotive" lead car derailed and crushed a rider. The Icon Park drop-tower death sounds like it was actually a design flaw in the ride system--the ride should never have been able to dispatch with the rider's restraint locked in that position. The ride ops could have caught it, but the ride itself was giving them a literal green light to go ahead. Given the number of people who ride every day, these accidents are so rare that riding a roller coaster is safer than a lot of things you do in your daily life. These days, you're in more danger from catching COVID in the queue. But nobody *needs* to ride an amusement ride. When a ride exists solely for purposes of fun, really the accident rate should be as close to zero as is humanly possible.

  • @MattMcIrvin

The only bouncy castles I ever was on were the ones on funfairs and the like. They were strapped down with so many safety lines, a hurricane probably couldn't have blown them away. I remember that it was kinda creepy seeing a bouncy castle from the sides or the back because it sort of looked like a spider nest with very thick and single strings.

  • @MattMcIrvin

    @MattMcIrvin

...an update on the Icon Park accident: turns out it was possible to manually adjust the position of the sensor so that it could latch and show green at an unsafe position, and on two of the seats on the ride, this had been done, probably to accommodate larger riders. So a combination of a design flaw (that should not have been possible!) and a maintenance/operations issue (I think this was far outside of the operating manual's recommendations).

Multiple rapids rides have had problems with rafts flipping over for some reason. There was a fatal accident at Adventureland in Iowa just last year, which got oddly muted coverage (though the park is under new management now and the ride is still closed). I enjoyed watching "Class Action Park" from 2020. That place has always fascinated me since I first heard about some years ago, mostly because of the lax laws with amusement parks in the state at the time. Plus, the original owner was more interested in profit than safety and often ignored the red flags. There's a book written by the son of the original owner, who actually worked there during the summers when he was in high school and mentioned some rather unsettling things that happened during his time there, not just the rides. I do recommend it!

As someone who lives near Orlando herself, I'm glad you mentioned both the monorail incident at Disney as well as the more recent Orlando Freefall incident. I only vaguely remember the Disney Monorail incident since I was still really young when it happened. However, what I do know is that after the incident, they got rid of both monorails purple and pink and used the nondamaged parts to created monorails peach and teal. They mostly likely did this to not recall monorails purple and pink with the incident, to which I give respect to that decision. As for the Orlando Freefall incident, I sadly don't know too much else about it besides what has been stated already. The only other thing I could add is that after the incident all the rides made by the same manufacturers closed down from reinspection. However, that was a few weeks ago when the incident freshly happened. I don't know if any have reopened since then. However, I still do give my sympathy and condolences to the family as the accident could've been avoided and the ride having more precautions. Again, I have mad respects for you covering both of those incidents with care, especially as the later one is still effecting the Central Florida area greatly as well as the theme park ride manufacturing industry as a whole.

The Dreamworld River Rapid Disaster is well known in theme park enthusiast circles as one of the more shocking tragedies to befall riders on a ride. My heart goes out to those families affected by such a terrible disaster; it reminds me a little of the freak accident that occurred on Shoot The Rapids at my home park Cedar Point, which closed that ride too. It also brings to mind the terrible recent accident on Top Thrill Dragster this past summer, where a piece of the ride camera flew off and struck someone from my home state in the head, causing serious brain damage. AFAIK, both incidents had people injured, but alive. Especially thankful TTD's case didn't cause death; it would truly have been a tragic day at a place I love and a horrible tragedy for the family. However I have to say that "Industrial Manslaughter" would make for an amazing name for a Metal band.

They even have a hatch on the top of the loop just incase someone gets stuck in the loop. At the current moment the ride is no longer in service. Idk if it will reopen

Nice job again, Strider. It's nice to see you branching off into other content like this. Keep up the good work. As for the video topic, I don't know whether you've heard of The Smiler Incident. The Smiler was a groundbreaking steel inversion rollercoaster which opened in 2013 at Alton Towers here in the UK, a park known for a lot of amazing coasters. In 2015, the most infamous UK theme park incident in recent years happened when an empty train which had stalled on a test run collided with a loaded train, causing serious injuries to several riders. It's debated on whether a gust of wind caused the test train to stall, or whether the lift suspension broke. But what people do know is that the people operating the ride ignored the warnings and kept the ride running, unaware that another train was coming down the track until it was too late. Alton Towers was slapped with a huge lawsuit over the incident and several people involved in the incident appeared on UK news and daytime shows to voice their opinions. And although The Smiler (as well as similar rides elsewhere in the UK) would reopen in the 2016 season with increased security measures in place, the reputation of Alton Towers would never be quite the same afterwards.

I rode the Verrukt while it was still open. Despite the ride being brand new, the rafts looked like they were 30 years old. There were holes all over them and just Velcro straps to keep you in that could easily be undone. They had a big scale everyone had to stand on to make sure the weight was distributed. I was 11 or 12, they needed someone to come up that was 150 pounds, they settled for me saying “good enough” even though I was about 90. Turned out they were still doing tests with sand bags after it was opened during the night. Crazy something awful didn’t happen sooner

We have a theme park called 'Alton towers' in the UK which has a ride called the Smiler. An empty tester cart slammed into one full of people at full speed. Causing massive injuries for the people who'd had their legs pinned. Nobody stopped the ride at first and the carts kept rolling whilst stuck together. Whilst onlookers screamed at the staff to make it stop! Two young ladies (one a dancer) had to have legs amputated above the knee because the cart smashed their lower legs to the point of no return.

Hey Strider! So I'm actually from Wisconsin and it's a tradition for me and my family to go to Wisconsin Dells every summer and spring break. I have been to Mount Olympus twice in my lifetime. The first time I went I was 6 years old and I was in the wave pool with my Mom. In the wave pool the waves are harsh and huge and obviously for a small child you would think there would be a warning of the wave pool but there wasn't. (Also, the wave pool is huge and crowded) And because there was no warning, when the waves began to activate, I almost drowned to death. As I was getting knocked back I hit my head on the ground, I was bumping into random people, and swallowing a whole bunch of chlorine water. Thank God my Mom was there to save me because I think I would have drowned that day. That's not even the worst of it because I was thankful enough to be in the middle and not on the sides because on the sides of the wave pool there are these huge rocks and if I was standing on the side I would have probably had a brain injury. After that incident I didn't go back to Mount Olympus until I went back 7 years later (when I was 13). Thankfully, there are safety measures near the wave pool. Now there are tons of postings warning people of the heavy waves. But I wouldn't go there ever again because it's an overall uncomfortable water park to be in and there are way more better resorts/water parks in Wisconsin Dells then Mount Olympus. (Sorry if my comment is long to read🙏🏾)

I figured Action Park would be number one. Action Park was just pure chaos. The nearby hospital even had several ambulances that were specifically for Action Park, because of all the accidents. Another factor for people almost drowning and sadly, actually drowning, is the water in the park. The water was really cold because it was natural mountain spring water, when people hit the water, especially on the Tarzan Swing, they’d sometimes go into shock. Action Park is still around, though now it’s called Mountain Creek Park.

On a much more serious note, being an Englishman, I’m glad I haven’t been in a serious accident to date, but hearing all the horrible tragedies that have happened over the last 100 years must have been devastating. I know I would be horrified if I was there. I’m glad that the regulations helped to keep lawsuits from coming in. I’m also glad to be a British voice actor, because I can say my thoughts on a few things that haven’t always been talked about, and also create my own videos, though it’s still in the early stages. If you did want me to be reviewed, I’d be very glad to give my thoughts, and anyways, it’s nice to get my voice in high quality out, and learn new things about me. Also, before number one, if that theme park boss had multiple incidents thrown at him, I bet he would be laughing on the other side of his face, because it’s better to be safe than sorry, like you said. But number one’s incidents just infuriates me, I can’t believe that they didn’t shut down earlier! Even I, I! I of all people would probably recommend people, NOT to go there! As for the video itself, I respect the people who suffered on those rides, but I’m glad safety regulations have helped keep everyone safe in the following 80 years, now everyone else can enjoy these rides and be safe too! As for your mini segments (between the main segments), I really like your relationship with Boo, it really makes the story really interesting and gives me a smile to still enjoy watching like Dog Bites Bear from Modern Family Guy! Kings Island holds so many memories for me. It's a beautiful place and everytime I visit I feel safe and cared for by all the staff. I feel as if they actually care.

I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the smiler in Alton Towers in England, it was one of the most hype up rollercoasters at the time in 2013 and there was advertising for it everywhere, but unfortunately 2 years after it opened the ride operators let too many coaster on the tracks at once too close together and a tragic accident occurred that I think resulted in a few deaths and a lot of injuries; the ride is still open but there’s still a lot of people who just refuse to go on the ride to this day and it’s one of the biggest theme park tragedies in England

As an enthusiast in theme parks, I must say I found this video quite enjoyable! You did a really good job on this. My only problems with it are some slight inconsistencies (showing a "T" crash instead of a head-on one in the Monorail segment and showing Formula Rossa footage in the Ring Racer segment), but it's pretty great after that. I'm also a little surprised you didn't mention the 2015 Smiler crash, at Alton Towers, as an honorable mention. Despite not causing casualties, it caused immense damage to not only the poor guests on the thing, but it also put Alton Towers itself into a pretty tough spot for a few years.

The Orlando Free Fall is right across from where I live, the amount of times it brings us dread when we drive past it is terrifying, it's also still the talk around here, the ride operators really should've been more careful with the safety on that thing

If anyone is interested in theme parks and other horror stories like this, there's a channel called Fascinating Horror that you should definitely check out. It goes into the history of the event, the moments preceding the event, before leading into the event itself, and the aftermath, like what changes were made to safety regulations because of the tragedies, and if responsibility was taken by the companies involved. It's a lot less goofy than this channel, and pays its respect to the deceased. But definitely worth checking out for anyone further interested. They've even covered a few of the theme parks mentioned in this video, like the Class Action Park and the Disney Monorail incident.

There was a story on the news over here in the States in the early 2010s about a ride called the Texas Giant. From what I can recall, staff were preparing to give people a ride and there was a woman who was extra nervous. She asked if she could hear them clicking her in again and the employee said she was ok as long as she heard the first click. While the Texas Giant was in operation, the poor woman got thrown clean from the ride and was tragically killed. The ride was closed afterwards, but since I am not a resident of Texas I cannot say whether or not it got reopened.

I heard about this accident. The ride was closed for a short time, but it did reopen. I’m pretty sure it was deemed operator error. Before the accident the ride operated with just lap bars, but a seatbelt was added as a redundant safety restraint. That accident was almost 10 years ago, and thankfully it hasn’t had an accident since.

Finally a "dangerous" theme park rides video that isn't clickbaity. I've seen many clickbait coaster videos where they put roller coasters that never had any accidents as deadly and don't respect the viewers (I'm looking at YOU, Top5Central). It's a breath of fresh air to see a video like this where research is done carefully and is very respectful.

Okay, so action park sounds horribly dangerous. However, if you made it actually safe, that tank battle idea sounds fun as hell

It breaks my heart just knowing that people can get hurt or killed on these rides. My deepest thoughts and prays to the families that have either been injured or who have lost loved ones. Just hearing about all this makes me avoid rides like these but also makes me cautious about visiting theme parks as well.

I'm new to your channel and I've just got to say that you are probably the *kindest* presenter I've ever encountered. Many people are nice and some of them are even professional, but you aren't just *both of these,* you take consideration to a whole new level. I've never seen anyone who gave respect to people who *were* operating things safely at a time when most people were stoned. Thank you from one of the teens who managed to survive Action Park during our junior class trip in 1980!

I was on the Thunder River Rapid Ride with my family one week before that accident that killed four people. I live in Victoria so we hadn't been to Dreamworld in 12 years. We were almost incredibly unlucky. Mum was shaken up about it.

I remember going to one of those wave pools when I was a kid, and I've always been short so the waves often dragged me into the deeper parts of the pool against my will. I can't say I almost drowned, but I did go under a few times to the point that my throat burned from coughing up water.
