I remember when folks thought "gluten-free" diets automatically meant "healthy," but it's really only meant for people allergic to gluten. The food tends to be *more* unhealthy b/c it adds more sugar to make up for the taste.

It’s annoyed my Mom who is Celiac but I disagree. The biggest issue with Gluten free stuff is the texture and it’s dry plus the type of Flour affects the taste. Potato and beetroot flour tastes horrible but Rice flour or usage of Corn starch where you can is not that bad but it needs a thickening agent like Xathan gum to hold it together. Took her years of experimenting to get it right.

We, in the modern world and in advanced nations, are so separated from our food sources that most of us cannot recognize what is and isn't real food. So, when fad diets come around and make things easier, it fools a lot of people into thinking they've found a way through a very difficult to understand subject.

The problem with the popularity of the gluten-free """diets""" is that companies have become careless with actual gluten free foods, mainly doing them because of the popularity of the """diet""". @@RaynaGrimm No diet is going to make you lose weight permanently. You're right it requires more than eating healthy to lose weight. That really is the problem with fad diets or treating actually healthy diets solely as a means to lose weight. What really doesn't help is the fact that we are so completely separated from our sources of food it puts corporations in charge of what we can put in our bodies. To be fair, some do provide healthful natural food, like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains, but they're almost considered luxury items. So, what do people have to eat otherwise? Heavily processed, industrial foodstuffs engineered by corporate food scientists to be far less satiating and far more calorically dense. Even things that are generally considered unhealthy to eat are almost health food in comparison if you make it yourself with fresh ingredients. The reason it's so hard to lose weight are effectively two-fold. One, our nature makes it so we hold onto fat to protect us in cases of prolonged starvation, which our ancestors had to endure before the modern age and large-scale agriculture became possible. Two, our brains are regularly being hacked by things like advertisement and flavor enhancing chemicals that make even healthful food addictive. A healthful diet and exercise are good, but without reprogramming, we fall into the difficulty you pointed out, falling back into bad habits. And with corporations having all the real power, the deprogramming we all need is not likely to come anytime soon.

Some of my mom's coworkers have tried a few fad diets and beauty trends. We've been told that the Sensa powder you sprinkle on foods just makes the food taste AWFUL! Maybe that's how it works. You'll eat less because of how bad it tastes? ^_^0 Another Honorable Mention would be one this pill that was popular in the early 2000's. I can't remember the name, but it was supposed to be taken before meals so you could enjoy normally oily/greasy foods without your body absorbing said oils. The consequences? That oil needs to go somewhere, and...well, let's say it's a very powerful laxative. It was better to just not eat oily/greasy foods in the first place, making the pills redundant.

Apologies for my rambling ahead of time. I actually ran into someone on the carnivore diet in the wild and the whole experience was like talking to a militant vegan. Worst part was having to call them out for heavily implying that the carnivore diet cures autism. I set them off twice for mentioning my love of mac and peas(mac and cheese with peas). I shared a discord server with this person and they'd talk about there being studies on it being good for you without showing the studies. I love meat a lot, but man, I don't think I could go a week without any vegetables.

Yknow, I can't remember what show in particular, but I think it was a sitcom on Disney or Nickelodeon? They had a bit for one episode of this little sister character who INSISTED on going on a gluten free diet, even against her doctor's clarifications that she really didn't need it. The reason? Because EVERYONE was going gluten free and it's something everyone from her friends to her TV idols were doing... I think coming across that episode was one of the first instances I remember being educated that "gluten free" isn't a key word for any other diet food like "sugar free" or "calorie free", it's legitimately for people with medical conditions. Good on them for getting the word out there.

Hey man - love the videos. I agree with a lot of what you say, but the point about the food pyramid I do challenge per your rules for commenting. The food pyramid/circle is largely influenced by the lobbying of each individual industry associated with the pyramid. I have lived with a long-term diet of low carbs (from bread at least) and high fruit, protein and water intake with relatively low amounts of vegetables (this is a bad part of my diet, I just have a hard time finding or finding in grocery stores the veggies I like) and have lost 40-50 pounds within a relatively shortish amount of time alongside exercise. Some people get super fat (like myself) from high carb intake so it’s not necessarily about having a “rounded” diet like we grew up thinking, it’s specific to each persons body and how their body reacts to things like sugar, carbs, etc.

Honestly, I would've thought that the "No sugar diet" would've exclusively referred to processed sugar, not to the naturally occurring sugar in fruits and vegetables. If "no sugar" was just the processed sugar, then that would've been plenty reasonable. Also, is the cotton ball "diet" the reason Elf showed Buddy eating some of the doctor's cotton balls? Actually, how did they do that scene, anyway? They didn't really have Will Ferrell actually eating real cotton balls, did they? I should also give mention to "Vitamin Doughnuts", which I think came out in the 1970s (I saw this on the Cooking Channel, but that was years ago). Apparently, some company claimed to be selling "healthy doughnuts", just as a marketing campaign. Fortunately, they ended up being forced to shut down due to the false advertisement.

As an actor, I can say usually when a scene calls for eating weird stuff (like cotton balls), we use a mix of editing and a prop that looks close enough that it can fool the eye. Or you just spit it out after pretending to swallow (I had to do that with a paperclip for a play I was doing). Balls of white cotton candy can be used for cotton balls, or just popping a fabric that looks like a cotton ball in your mouth. Cut the take, spit it out, then mime swallow when you redo the scenes when you have nothing in your mouth and sitch the scene together so the cut isn't noticable. It's all in the editing

As someone who's in recovery from anor*xia and orthor*xia, I can 100% confirm that if you were to trust every "health expert" out there, you would be left with nothing to eat. I've been guilt tripped into diet culture to the point that I was genuinely afraid of eating almost anything, especially if it was unhealthy. I would feel disgusted about myself if I ate a piece of chocolate... However, the more I restricted, the more I longed for those types of food. What I am trying to say is that a balanced diet is the best diet, in my opinion. Life is too short to miss out on delicious desserts that can totally be a part of your healthy diet. The more you say no, the more you will crave it. I believe that everyone deserves a happy and healthy life and a great relationship with food, as I do not wish it upon anyone to have such negative thoughts surrounding simple things in life that bring us joy, based on the nutritional value of the food we put into our body❤

Although since I sleep so late, I feel like I need to get up early and have breakfast to reduce my cravings. Tried Golo [supplement, not the diet], but it didn't work, neither did Slimfast. This is the first time I've ever seen someone talk about Narcorexia! That's the specific kind of ED I used to have, but people just brushed it off. I had to go to the hospital so many times because I was severely malnourished but the people around me kept encouraging it because I "looked good," it was an awful time in my life and I wish more people were aware of it.

The No Sugar diet could easily be changed to the No Added Sugar diet and it would be just fine. By doing the No Sugar Diet you're actually cutting out important stuff from your system, but by doing the No Added Sugar diet it might take you a bit to adjust to the change, but it can actually help you lose weight and be healthy at the same time.

We did the KETO diet a few years ago, and it works well for losing weight. And it allows a lot of very tasty food, as long as it's carb free. However, it was never intended as a long term lifestyle, as it raises your cholesterol levels. You get on it, lose your weight, and then get off, but then maintain your weight with a healthy combination of proper diet and exercise. The big problem is, so many get on this diet, lose their weight, but never maintain it.

Oh wow, i couldn't even believe half of these diets existed, thanks for talking about them! I DO have tried to follow a keto diet but maybe I should look a bit into the modified Atkins diet, if only at least out of curiosity. Here in Mexico we used the food pyramid, but switched to the Healthy Eating Plate because there were people who would think the foods at the top had to be eaten the most, I guess this is similar to the food circle.

About 15 years ago I tried the HCG diet. I got a small bottle of the HCG hormone, had to put five drops under my tongue four times a day, could not eat or drink anything for 15 min afterwards. The diet limits you to 500 calories a day. I was on it for months and yeah, I lost a lot of weight, but man I got so sick! My insomnia spun outa control, I couldn’t think straight most of the time, and my memory was awful. The only good thing that came out of that diet for me was that I lost my taste for lost sweet things. I don’t like most deserts anymore, I don’t drink soda anymore, and I cannot have my coffee or tea with sugar in it anymore.

I got admit, I love cookies as like a dessert or a snack but being on a cookie diet that sounds like a recipe for disaster plus I think most people need to worry about when it comes to eating healthy it’s just eat the right amount of healthy things stay active and remember to drink plenty of water

12:55 wait did anyone mention men during the Vietnam war used to shallow cotton balls? It was so when they got a medical exam when being drafted, it would show up as shadows as x-rays and they'd be dismissed from duty. Might be an urban legend though. Also the special k diet!! Oh man... "You are beautiful. But try to lose 5lbs" High school was diet central.. it makes me mad now because I was never anything but a "normal" body weight and my obsession over it throughout my teenhood is upsetting Great video! I love learning about this!
