I remember when folks thought "gluten-free" diets automatically meant "healthy," but it's really only meant for people allergic to gluten. The food tends to be *more* unhealthy b/c it adds more sugar to make up for the taste.

It’s annoyed my Mom who is Celiac but I disagree. The biggest issue with Gluten free stuff is the texture and it’s dry plus the type of Flour affects the taste. Potato and beetroot flour tastes horrible but Rice flour or usage of Corn starch where you can is not that bad but it needs a thickening agent like Xathan gum to hold it together. Took her years of experimenting to get it right.

This is why diets in general do not work. These extreme methods are for the actors who have only weeks to get in shape for a role. Nothing can replace staying active and eating with purpose. You have to find a change in lifestyle that is sustainable and enjoyable.

We, in the modern world and in advanced nations, are so separated from our food sources that most of us cannot recognize what is and isn't real food. My grandma has celiac disease. The problem with the popularity of the gluten-free """diets""" is that companies have become careless with actual gluten free foods, mainly doing them because of the popularity of the """diet""". So they do not ensure their foods are TRULY gluten free, so sometimes when she eats a "gluten-free" food, it actualy has some gluten in it, and she gets sick.

@@Craxin01 guess it depends who you ask, cause sadly people treat even normal/neutral "diets" as temporary, like a fad.. so they quit them when they think they get what they needed out of them THEN RELAPSE AND GAIN IT ALL BACK when maybe.. really they needed a whole ass lifestyle change or at the very least need to change their relationship with food part of their lifestyle so they are eating healthy in the first dang place. and always careful about cheat days, manage them too so you dont go hella over board and forget your goals
@Craxin01
16 күн бұрын
@@RaynaGrimm No diet is going to make you lose weight permanently. You're right it requires more than eating healthy to lose weight. That really is the problem with fad diets or treating actually healthy diets solely as a means to lose weight. What really doesn't help is the fact that we are so completely separated from our sources of food it puts corporations in charge of what we can put in our bodies. To be fair, some do provide healthful natural food, like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains, but they're almost considered luxury items. So, what do people have to eat otherwise? Heavily processed, industrial foodstuffs engineered by corporate food scientists to be far less satiating and far more calorically dense. Even things that are generally considered unhealthy to eat are almost health food in comparison if you make it yourself with fresh ingredients. The reason it's so hard to lose weight are effectively two-fold. One, our nature makes it so we hold onto fat to protect us in cases of prolonged starvation, which our ancestors had to endure before the modern age and large-scale agriculture became possible. Two, our brains are regularly being hacked by things like advertisement and flavor enhancing chemicals that make even healthful food addictive. A healthful diet and exercise are good, but without reprogramming, we fall into the difficulty you pointed out, falling back into bad habits. And with corporations having all the real power, the deprogramming we all need is not likely to come anytime soon.

I didn't know that Australia had their own version of the food pyramid. I thought that was universal. 4:06 I loved Cookie Monster as a kid, as with everything Sesame Street like Elmo, so I appreciate the representation, even though Cookie is aiming for a healthier diet. It started out as a playground rumor that eventually came true! 5:49 My mom is on a low sugar regimen because of her diabetes, but she always says to allow yourself a little bit of sweet things just so you dont miss out
Some of my mom's coworkers have tried a few fad diets and beauty trends. We've been told that the Sensa powder you sprinkle on foods just makes the food taste AWFUL! Maybe that's how it works. You'll eat less because of how bad it tastes? ^_^0 Another Honorable Mention would be one this pill that was popular in the early 2000's. I can't remember the name, but it was supposed to be taken before meals so you could enjoy normally oily/greasy foods without your body absorbing said oils. The consequences? That oil needs to go somewhere, and...well, let's say it's a very powerful laxative. It was better to just not eat oily/greasy foods in the first place, making the pills redundant.

Yknow, I can't remember what show in particular, but I think it was a sitcom on Disney or Nickelodeon? They had a bit for one episode of this little sister character who INSISTED on going on a gluten free diet, even against her doctor's clarifications that she really didn't need it. The reason? Because EVERYONE was going gluten free and it's something everyone from her friends to her TV idols were doing... I think coming across that episode was one of the first instances I remember being educated that "gluten free" isn't a key word for any other diet food like "sugar free" or "calorie free", it's legitimately for people with medical conditions. Good on them for getting the word out there.
@Railuge

I vaguely recall that too. Definitely was a live action show.
Hey man - love the videos. I agree with a lot of what you say, but the point about the food pyramid I do challenge per your rules for commenting. The food pyramid/circle is largely influenced by the lobbying of each individual industry associated with the pyramid. I have lived with a long-term diet of low carbs (from bread at least) and high fruit, protein and water intake with relatively low amounts of vegetables (this is a bad part of my diet, I just have a hard time finding or finding in grocery stores the veggies I like) and have lost 40-50 pounds within a relatively shortish amount of time alongside exercise. Some people get super fat (like myself) from high carb intake so it’s not necessarily about having a “rounded” diet like we grew up thinking, it’s specific to each persons body and how their body reacts to things like sugar, carbs, etc.
@fallenking578
10 күн бұрын
Very true as every body is different. I have to be on a very high fat and salt diet due to being way too skinny and having POTS, but my bother had to cut way down on carbs so she could stay in a healthy range. Bodies are different and sometimes you need to experiment to find what works (safely. Preferably under a doctor's guidance)
To be fair, if I *could* lose weight eating nothing but cookies, I totally would.
Honestly, I would've thought that the "No sugar diet" would've exclusively referred to processed sugar, not to the naturally occurring sugar in fruits and vegetables. If "no sugar" was just the processed sugar, then that would've been plenty reasonable. Also, is the cotton ball "diet" the reason Elf showed Buddy eating some of the doctor's cotton balls? Actually, how did they do that scene, anyway? They didn't really have Will Ferrell actually eating real cotton balls, did they? I should also give mention to "Vitamin Doughnuts", which I think came out in the 1970s (I saw this on the Cooking Channel, but that was years ago). Apparently, some company claimed to be selling "healthy doughnuts", just as a marketing campaign. Fortunately, they ended up being forced to shut down due to the false advertisement.
@Railuge

But then again straight up sugar cane is natural. Also "healthier" and cheaper than the processed white crystals we buy.
@fallenking578

As an actor, I can say usually when a scene calls for eating weird stuff (like cotton balls), we use a mix of editing and a prop that looks close enough that it can fool the eye. Or you just spit it out after pretending to swallow (I had to do that with a paperclip for a play I was doing). Balls of white cotton candy can be used for cotton balls, or just popping a fabric that looks like a cotton ball in your mouth. Cut the take, spit it out, then mime swallow when you redo the scenes when you have nothing in your mouth and sitch the scene together so the cut isn't noticable. It's all in the editing
As someone who's in recovery from anor*xia and orthor*xia, I can 100% confirm that if you were to trust every "health expert" out there, you would be left with nothing to eat. I've been guilt tripped into diet culture to the point that I was genuinely afraid of eating almost anything, especially if it was unhealthy. I would feel disgusted about myself if I ate a piece of chocolate... However, the more I restricted, the more I longed for those types of food. What I am trying to say is that a balanced diet is the best diet, in my opinion. Life is too short to miss out on delicious desserts that can totally be a part of your healthy diet. The more you say no, the more you will crave it. I believe that everyone deserves a happy and healthy life and a great relationship with food, as I do not wish it upon anyone to have such negative thoughts surrounding simple things in life that bring us joy, based on the nutritional value of the food we put into our body❤
Isn't that definition of toxin describing venom? Something harmful in a plant/animal that gets injected into something else via a bite or sting.

Not quite. It's only in animals and not plants. And poisonous animals like poison dart frogs have this too, along with venomous animals such as the Brazilian Wandering Spider

They say the paleo diet comprises of food eaten by Palaeolithic Man ate, since he was skinny…yeah, of course he was skinny, he had to hunt his own food, you’d be skinny too if it took you 3 days to track down a pizza. That being said, it seems decently balanced.

I agree with some of the commenters' problems with maintaining a proper diet (e.i. sensorary issues, love of junk food, picky eater), but another issue is budget restrictions, especially with food costs rising at the time. I just can't seem to enjoy eating healthy without breaking the bank 😢.

keep in mind that processed food is really expensive. also, while you can eat a healthy diet that is expensive (ie one with like heaps of out of season veggies and berries, salmon, processed 'healthy' food), you can also eat a cheap healthy diet (eating things like sardines, lots of cheap veggies (i never buy any over $6 a kilo), and reducing processed food). what are the healthy foods that you're talking about that are expensive?
Air Diet is basically the "Heavenly Express" diet because you'll be in LITERAL cloud nine pretty quick after adopting that "diet". My first thoughts on hearing #1 worst diet is basically: Excuse me, the WHAT diet? *cringe levels e t e r n a l* ^^;
Hi Strider! Learning about these awful diets was interesting. I feel bad for the people who lost their lives to some of these, particularly the air diet, Sleeping Beauty Diet, and the vinegar diet. Hopefully, times will change and everyone will be able to succesfully have a balanced diet. I myself am currently having weight issues. It's mostly the snacking, though. Although since I sleep so late, I feel like I need to get up early and have breakfast to reduce my cravings. Tried Golo [supplement, not the diet], but it didn't work, neither did Slimfast. So, I have decided to try and reduce the number of snacks I have. Not going to be easy, but I will try.

i remember trying to do a keto diet in my early college years trying to lose some weight, and while i didn't suffer through the worse of it, i definetly exerienced symptoms of "Shivering" and Extreme tiredness that pretty much got instantly resolved the moment i ate some fruit nowadays i eat a more normal diet and go to the gym, which made me lose loads more weight than anything the keto diet Claimed it was suppse to do

I’ve been a vegetarian for almost a year now and before that I cut out read meat. It’s really not all that restrictive and I can eat out with my friends basically anywhere, even steak houses typically have a spinach and artichoke dip with bread.

You point a lot to the food pyramid, I don't know the history of the Australian food pyramid, but what I do know is the American food pyramid isn't based on total science, and a lot of it is due to corporate lobbying
@phantomstrider

You're welcome to make strong claims like this. But would you have some reputable sources to back your claims that the food pyramid is due to corporate lobbying and is not nutritionally accurate?
@littlemacisunderrated412
17 күн бұрын
@@phantomstrider it definitely isnt really a primary source, but the TV show Adam ruins everything did do a segment on the food pyramid's history, as did the KZread channel the food theorists. Iirc, after the rationing during the second world war, they needed a way to get weights back, so the government recommended eating more. After everything went back to normal, the gov wanted to recommend eating less, but because that would cut into food profits, companies lobbied to recommend choosing different options instead of eating less. I haven't looked at the sources myself but I know they list their sources
@phantomstrider

@@littlemacisunderrated412 To be fair the food pyramid I showed you was modified based on modern day recommendations from Australia and Ireland rather than America (thus fruit and vegetables are at the bottom and not grains). Not based on the World War 2 recommendations. So you'll find grains are not as high priority as fruit and vegetables. Which I still think is a good guideline compared to the average American diet. (Sources: www.safefood.net/healthy-eating/guidelines/food-pyramid nutritionaustralia.org/fact-sheets/healthy-eating-pyramid/ ) And I'm sorry but I just don't find KZread channels like food theory as trustworthy sources as Ireland and Australia nutritionists.

@@phantomstrider that's a completely understandable viewpoint. It hasn't occurred to me that it was a modified version. And I guess I do trust Australia to actually give accurate information.

@@littlemacisunderrated412 It was a perfectly fair question and I always appreciate seeing people question their sources 🙂I think the biggest regret I have for this video is not making it clearer that I was using an updated food pyramid + the food circle, as you weren't the first person to point out that there's contention over the old food pyramid. Still, I look back and think overall it was a relatively informed, educated message to viewers even if I wasn't clear enough on some stuff. Thanks for the chat on this macisunderrated 👍

Interesting video. I’ll admit my diet is terrible but at least it doesn’t make me malnourished
Heck yea,more Strider-content!! I love your vids man,i’m excited to watch another Banger 🎉🎉🎉
I love how strider’s videos are so informative, cosy and the perfect length. Definitely one of the most balanced channels out there
The only one of these diets that I actually tried was the gluten-free diet back when I was a teenager and that wasn't my idea, it was my parents. And from what my dad remembered, it didn't really do me any good. I'll admit that my regular everyday eating can be questionable, but I'm always taking walks and bike rides. Plus part of my job involves taking in shopping carts from outside and bringing them inside or to the sides of the entrance, so that REALLY helps in ranking up my steps.
Gotta love when strider says “Monumentally stupid” 😄 dunno why but that’s one of my favorite phrases of his 😁 Anaya great video josh!

This is the first time I've ever seen someone talk about Narcorexia! That's the specific kind of ED I used to have, but people just brushed it off. I had to go to the hospital so many times because I was severely malnourished but the people around me kept encouraging it because I "looked good," it was an awful time in my life and I wish more people were aware of it.
The No Sugar diet could easily be changed to the No Added Sugar diet and it would be just fine. By doing the No Sugar Diet you're actually cutting out important stuff from your system, but by doing the No Added Sugar diet it might take you a bit to adjust to the change, but it can actually help you lose weight and be healthy at the same time.

We did the KETO diet a few years ago, and it works well for losing weight. And it allows a lot of very tasty food, as long as it's carb free. However, it was never intended as a long term lifestyle, as it raises your cholesterol levels. You get on it, lose your weight, and then get off, but then maintain your weight with a healthy combination of proper diet and exercise. The big problem is, so many get on this diet, lose their weight, but never maintain it.
Of all the times I chose to eat a bowl of fruit is when the cotton "diet" pops up.
0:10 I wish that the Dutchman was a vegetarian!
Such an interesting video. Thanks for making it ❤
Oh wow, i couldn't even believe half of these diets existed, thanks for talking about them! I DO have tried to follow a keto diet but maybe I should look a bit into the modified Atkins diet, if only at least out of curiosity. Here in Mexico we used the food pyramid, but switched to the Healthy Eating Plate because there were people who would think the foods at the top had to be eaten the most, I guess this is similar to the food circle.
About 15 years ago I tried the HCG diet. I got a small bottle of the HCG hormone, had to put five drops under my tongue four times a day, could not eat or drink anything for 15 min afterwards. The diet limits you to 500 calories a day. I was on it for months and yeah, I lost a lot of weight, but man I got so sick! My insomnia spun outa control, I couldn’t think straight most of the time, and my memory was awful. The only good thing that came out of that diet for me was that I lost my taste for lost sweet things. I don’t like most deserts anymore, I don’t drink soda anymore, and I cannot have my coffee or tea with sugar in it anymore.
