Testing a Small Town Bassin' prop on a Newport Vessels kayak trolling motor

Small Town Bassin' makes aftermarket trolling motor props claimed to be more efficient, more powerful, and higher speed than the standard props on trolling motors. I wanted to see if this was true, so I did head-to-head testing of one of their props compared to the stock prop on my 55lb thrust trolling motor. The STB prop is for a 40 lb class trolling motor, so it was slightly undersized for my motor. Despite that, I found my top speed to be higher than the stock prop. Even more impressive, it used way less power to achieve the top speed of the Newport Vessels prop. I present the comparison performance curves at the end of the video. Testing was done on my Wilderness Systems Tarpon 130X, in the configuration I normally use for fishing, including a scupper mounted sonar transducer and DIY rudder attached to the motor.
Full disclosure: Adam at Small Town Bassin' provided this prop at no charge in exchange for some mass production help and access to the test results.

    *This makes my old motor look like a toy **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it's well built. I haven't had it on the water yet, but I'm very sure it will perform just fine.*

    I bought one, use it on my old town kayak. I gained 1 mph top speed. Top speed is 5 mph. No vibration, cuts weeds like a weedeater, and really digs in reverse. #30 min kotta c2

    63% power with new prop, you were almost@ speed of oem prop but using less than half of wattage used by oem, new prop @63% power will take you more than 2x distance as before using less power.

    Definitely makes a difference for me. I get higher top speed when I want to spend the energy, and I'm more efficient when running at lower speeds. An all around performance improvement.

    I have a 46 lb. Newport vessels myself.. i was wondering how to contact STB .. i dont have facebook.. i am experimenting with a kipawa 314 today.. it was made for the Minn Kota 30 and 45.. and with just a slight mod, i got it mounted to the 46 lb Newport vessels.. it seems to be a pretty agressive prop.. i am having trouble accessing my you tube account, to post.. i will, if ican figure out what is happening with it.. i have the 46 mounted to an old town vapor 10.. i had a 30 lb. Minn Kota on it but i wanted more speed ..

    As far as I know, the only way to buy a STB prop is through the Small Town Bassin facebook page. If you don't have a FB account, you'll probably need to go through a friend who does...

    the comments section is turned off on Small Town Bassin so i don't know how to get in touch with him about purchasing a prop , do you like his props and are they very expensive ? All i need is an extra prop for my one man Creek Boat for fishing so would this prop be good for my 30 lb thrust or just buy a Minn Kota replacement prop ? could you tell me how to get in touch with him please

    It's the pitch of the props that diff right?

  • @terrykannedy8154

    @terrykannedy8154

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes. Higher pitch, greater thrust per revolution. Trolling motors are designed to max out at 4mph, hence they are called "trolling" motors. The only time they go faster is to add a prop like this with greater pitch. The only time a trolling motor goes slower than 4mph is if the boat is too big for the lbs of thrust the motor is rated at. I have a 62lb thrust NV on my 10ft pond prowler and it barely hits 4mph. It's all about pitch.

    Hello. I have a 36 lb Newport vessels & I got a new prop from STB, for some reason at max speed(5) my 50 amp breaker trip/goes off after 1 minute or 2. At speed 4 or lower is no problem at all, the STG prop only pulls 34 amps max. Is there something wrong with breaker? My set up is simple: Using a "VMAX MR96-60 AGM 12V 60AH AGM Battery" and my 36 lbs connects to this breaker that I got from Amazon "STETION Car Audio 50 Amp Resettable Fuse Circuit Breaker Car Protect for Audio System Fuse 12-24V DC for Car Audio Amps Overload Protection Fuse (50A)" More info. The stock 36 lbs prop came with a 2 blades prop., I've also upgraded to a 3 blades prop. for 46 lbs and it works totally fine with my simple set up. However I still want the STB prop. to be working with max speed, how can I fix this issue? Thanks !! PS. The prop is not rubbing anywhere and I don't have meter for any testing.

    Great video and experiment, love the graph at end too. Really shows how after about 4mph the draw required to keep increasing speed goes parabolic

    A third blade isnt needed for such small applications its why large ships have 5/6 blades. By going from 2 to 3 blades more drag is added which puts added load on the motor. load=amps. Your motor is probably right at that line. All things being equal (pitch) a 2 blade prop is more efficient and faster than a 3 blade.

    Interesting. Do you have any comparative test results? Props designed for air aren't normally ideal for operating in water, but I'd love to see test results. Also interested to see how they handle weeds and contact with the bottom when running shallow.

    that's what I did, 3 blade, about 7" diameter. Gained 1.5 mph, never tested watts. Next trying a 4 blade prop. Hoping to maximize low power rate of speed, don't need high speed.
