10x5 vs 10x8 prop for Minn Kota trolling motor

I ran the 10x5 and the 10x8 head to head to see which prop is better, since this is a variable trolling motor, I went by steps of 5 amps and recorded speed, below is a link to the 10x5 and 10x8 APC props, enjoy the video!!!

thank you for posting this. I have been testing power requirements for my redneck barrel boat all summer and this is helpful. Especially because you link'd where you bought them. A couple of key things I've learned this summer, the motor doesn't like a lower voltage for very long, it will get hot, and the motor control will get hot in just about any case unless you directly cool it if you are out more than a couple hours at a cruising speed of 3mph or more. Also, if you are using marine batteries (lead), you need to have enough battery that it would run 10hrs at the rate you use it. So, way more capacity than you will use, but pulling power out faster than that heats up the battery and damages it. Lithium is not like that, but you must have a good bms that can handle high output for a long time if you use lithium. So, you may have to get a much bigger pack than you need in order to keep things cool. My system is 24v trolling motor running on 4-6v flooded golf cart batteries (5kw/hr). I can only run it at 22 amps (500watts/hr) for 5 - 10 hrs (half the battery). Max amps is 45. if I go at more than 22a, something will get too hot to continue. Of course if I am only running for an hour or two, I can run at full power. The control will get very hot, but it will do it. I will get some props and test them next year probably. Thx for giving me an idea of what I can expect.

I'm glad it helped!!! Yea I run a 150ah lithium battery, and I can run about 3.5 to 4 mph at about 15 amps on a calm day, low voltage does hurt motors, but lithium stays above 13 volts all the way until they are close to 0. I can do at least 3mph for 10 hours, and pulling 15 amps I don't fear anything getting hot or damaged.

Great experiment, great data, thank you! 10x8 is actually quite similar to the recommended propellers (11x8) for torqeedo 1003, which is their past generation slower spinning model rated at 1000w. Of course the blade shape and area ratio is different, but not drastically -- apc propellers are much closer to these entry-level electric outboard propellers than traditional trolling motor propellers. I'll probably try out 10x8 on my 86lb trolling motor (also drawing around 1000w with stock propeller), and see if it has enough torque for the higher pitch.

Hey Codyakfishing , thank you for the review of the 10x8 prop!!! According to your findings with the 10x8 prop and the 55 trolling motor, it didn't do as well as I thought it was going to. However... with a little bit of math and the previous findings with the c30 Endura which is what I'm running the 10x8 on the smaller/slower motor should move more water and only draw within 1-3 amps more difference. It actually may do quite well on the upper end of the motor (speeds 3-5). The pitch of the 10x8 is much greater than the 10x5 and I don't think cavitation will be an issue due to the slower speed/power of the c2. Thanks again boss man, your information is GREATLY appreciated!!! I will keep my eye out for more of your boating and motor wisdom! I stuck with various props with a 4" pitch which I researched as being the pitch of the stock prop. The best performance was actually with a 9-4 APC and it provided the same 17 lbs thrust as the stock prop (yes the 30 lbs rating is a lie), but that same thrust was achieved at 21.7 amps versus 27.8 amps for the stock prop. Although I never did comparison measurements in the water, the 9-4 feels faster despite having the same static thrust which I suspect is because less current means more RPM.
