Less blades is always better for speed. Where a 3 blade excels is in the hole shot, more bite less slip. The reason the 3 blade was faster here was most likely due to pitch. That said I have been thinking about getting one too.

Yeah I’ve heard that . I spent about 2-3 hours today with the 2 blade on just to see . And honestly just wasn’t happy with the performance . What I usually run 20-30 as my bank speeds was 40-50 with the wedge 2 . Def eats more battery .

I can say older minn kota “speed prop” had much better performance than the wedge. Personally I never saw much of an improvement with staying weedless using the wedge.

I have a 17ft aluminium with a 70lb minn kota. The wedge is a little better in the weeds, seems to have much more bite down low for quick acceleration. My first impression of the 3 blade was MUCH smoother acceleration with almost no vibration. Also noticeably faster on the top end. I haven't gone back since installing the 3 blade.

I run two 40lb minn kotas. This might be something I will try. I fish a lake that is electric only. And we go about a mile or so up the lake. If I could get a couple of mph extra it would be worth it to me. Great video and thanks for the tip!

Great video and I also swear by the 3 blades they make! I only keep the original ones for backup. Three years and I still haven't needed the original one. :)

Thanks man . Yeah they make new ones now that are counter balanced like tires .. makes a huge difference in how quiet it is. I'll be doing a review video on it soon

I've been using these props for about ten, or eleven years. Low end is definitely better on the Kipawa. Right now I have them on my EM 160 on the Outboard, and I have to order a Kip for the front trolling motor. I beat it up pretty bad over the years, and currently using the prop that came with it. WWII isn't terrible, but the Kip is slightly better.

Test how much current, amps, is used with each prop. My thought is the l 3 blade would draw more current.

I’ve broken a wedge almost every year on the river. On the advice of a guide, I’m on year three of the kipawa.

Just bought a Minn Kota Ultrex 80# 24v that comes with the that 2 blade Wedge prop. What a total POS prop compared to the 3 blade I had on my old MotorGuide 46# 12v. Not so much in speed but the Wedge is absolutely worthless in the grass in comparison. With those out-turned prop tips, it wraps up immediately and it has really got me in some trouble when I'm getting blown downwind and all of a sudden it quits working it chokes the motor and I have to risk lifting the power unit out to unwrap in very sketchy conditions. I fish deep reservoirs out here in CA but fish the shallows and in lots of different vegetation and right now, grass-like vegetation is key and the big fish are hunkered down in it so I HAVE to be in it. Thinking 3 blade again and maybe something like the Ninja Blade cutting attachment, too.

@@jgringo5516 Good revisit! 10 mos later, I decided against changing because I had several say the keowa wasn't the way to go but the Ninja was so I put that on and it definitely improved the situation a bunch. I still get inevitable wraps which are just gonna happen in heavy grass but at least I can cut through it much better. With that, I'm absolutely loving the Ultrex. It completely changed my boat and ability to fish in all the crappy conditions my local impoundments throw at me. As much as it has been a ridiculous cliche, it was truly a 'game changer'! btw, good ol' Roland Martin is STILL touting the Minn Kota prop because that was his baby, apparently. 30 year old technology! Me thinks it's time for the engineers to get cracking on an improvement.! 😄

BassMoore I prefer the three blade is better.

Have had the Kip on my 40lb thrust for 7 years until it fell off? Put the stock blade back on and noticed a big difference in lack of speed and almost no power at all in reverse with the stock 2 blade. I don't run the motor in the weeds but otherwise highly recommend the Kipawa for maneuverability over the stock 2 blade!

My tiny 14' glass boat is electric only with 112lb rear Minkota and 40lb thrust front Minkota. 6 RV batteries gives me all day cruising. With both motors, top speed was 4.3 knots with weedless wedge props. Putting Kipawa prop on rear only gave me 4.6 with front & rear motors on 100%, BUT 4.8 with front motor off & retracted! Perhaps I will hit 5+ knots with a Kipawa on front too. I test against the wind then with the wind, and averaged speeds, from my GPS device, on the open lake with no current.

@@house3400 I had to shorten the pole and wires, as the 112# motor is made for a taller boat. My 6 gp29 batteries are overkill and too heavy. I plan to get much lighter batteries, perhaps from a wrecked Tesla. I'm planning to add 2 retractable motors to the stern. 55# Gators I got free and rebuilt. Since they are for top speed only, they won't have speed control. Just on or off. I have to make a steering linkage that works with them, but allows retraction. They will get RC aircraft props which work but may be fragile. The front motor is still weedless & only used for slow trolling or bass fishing from the front deck. It's a drag at speed. I will post a video of the boat when the lakes reopen. They are all closed due to Covid19.

I have the three blade on 112 Minn Kota ultrex on a 20' skeeter and it works great it has more torque . Don't use as much battery out in the wind.

I have a MK 30c2 on a 15 ft canoe. Ran some tests. At full speed the factory blade ran at 4.1mph. Kipawa 3 blade ran at 3.8. Rpms were noticeably less with the 3 blade.

Without a measurement of power consumption it is hard to say which is truly better.

I have a square stern canoe with an OLD 28 lb thrust minkota. I'd like some speed. I think a 55lb with a kipawa is going to make some fun. Right now, the 28 can barely make headway into the wind.

always go for the 55lb... u can always give a little less power... also go for lithium.. u will be sad after u buy ur third lead battery in 3 years.. I got a 120amp lithium i can go out on my jon all day fishing and not get below 50%. with a endura max 55.

Is there a way to plug in a meter to see if the gained torque isn't pulling more power due to the resistance? I'm fishing a kayak, so adding higher Ah batteries will add too much weight or cost a crazy amount for lithium. I'd love to be able to go faster... just don't want to get stuck out there and have to paddle all the weight back...

I like the Wedge in the weeds, don't need speed. Fish lots of weed lake up north hear in Wisconsin.

I agree with the comments that the Minnkota props are a POS out of the box, very disappointing. They are completely out of balance and wobble horribly at high speeds, you can see this while running the prop out of water at 20%. But I need a prop that will also chop through weeds effortlessly. I need more research to find the right prop.

What did you get?

I changed over from a Weedless wedge to the Kipawa on my Minn-Kota 80LB and All I noticed was that Kipawa is a weed lover not weedless at all as for getting more power to burn the Kipawa gets the nod on that but it is the weeds that kill this prop over the Wedge. Weedless Wedge 10 Kipawa 7 - so if you are trying to clear the weeds forget the Kipawa.

The weedless was extremely slower on my 30lb compared to the stock blade have not tried the kipawa might pick it up depending on the price

Want more speed just loosen the foot and run it while turning the foot slowly clockwise or counter clockwise until you hear it at top rpm then lock the screws, propeller back on and it’s much faster with that free bit of info

ALL Minn Kota's are rated for approx. 3mph when they are matched with the proper boat size vs LB rating... meaning a 30lb thrust is rated for smaller crafts like canoes, dinghies, small rowboats, etc. and will push them at a max. of 3mph, approx., depending on load, current, and wind.

I have Minnkota 45 lb thrust mounted on my 16 ft and heavy old town canoe and it goes about 5 .

Would you say the Kipawa uses more power the extra speed or are they about the same? Are there any downsides to the Kipawa? I'm considering getting one. Thanks!

I felt like at higher levels, yes more power, lower levels. less power.. I was getting faster speeds on speed 2-3 on my min kota than i was with the regular 2 blade prop. It was quieter and felt smoother

I like the wedge 2 because I fish in pads along the wedge cut thru thick pads no problem

Cade Hefflin it’s pretty loud , and vibrates a good bit , but it does work . I use it often . And no issues

Bass Moore, nice video! To be sure of the battery life assumption an amp meter needs to be used at the battery. The dial only sets the voltage to the motor but the amperage may be different depending on the load on the motor. For a battery life test, a comparison of the amp draw at a given speed is needed regardless of the dial setting.

To make a valid comparison you need to look at the voltage and amperage to see how many watts you are drawing. I suspect the Kipawa draws more watts.

If you have more blade surface area, then it will push the boat easier. If the rpm are the same, then the problem with more blade to water contact will go faster. Simple science. Most people tend to run their props are the wrong speed when moving, which is a bigger factor in battery life. If you run at 70% instead of 100%, then you might get better than 30% more battery life, bc of the amperage and run time.

Brian Franks you are 100% correct about this. Most people don't realize that the extra speed is from a higher resistance of the prop, which gets it's torque power from the motor, which is a power user that burns energy from the battery source. So the farther you push the motor, the more energy as stored amperage will be consumed over the same time period. All boats have drag and in a vacuum, it would be easy to show how Newtonian physics sets up as a "diminished return" on increased demand. Think of the Tortuous vs. the Hare scenario where the people who use the 3 prop vs. 2 prop over the entire day at one speed ie. low, and those that run full out at top speed. At the end of the day, the Hare got gassed early on and the Tortuous had gas in the tank. So if you can navigate at 70-80% of top demand use without open throttle, you will indeed conserve those amps at the end of the trip. If you are in harms way and a storm is approaching and your only means of power is an electric motor on a Kayak or John boat, then by all means, gun it. People also know this intuitively when they drive ICE automobiles. If you are heavy footed, your tank will drain faster than the economy driver. You got there a bit faster, (hypothetical hooray). I fill my tank up less often and cover the same distance in using more time. You used more energy. Its physics. BTW the you is the parenthetical you as in we or some but, I think you get it.

Just to add to your point, my troll motor guys have told me forever not to run at 100. I had a 70 lb. on the front of my 16 footer. All electric lake, and it just crawled around. I was literally rebuilding the thing every year, with the occasional brush meltdown in between. So, I bought an 80 Lb. for the front. I run it on 70, get about 3 mph, and the batteries do last longer than the 70 lb. I'm running the wedge because I tore my other prop up on some rocks. Grrr! I own it. I knew I was screwing up when I did it. LOL!

for elect motors blades do not matter, on fast boats 3 blades are slower but get boat to plane quicker is all.

Kipawa is better in my opinion. Switched a few year's ago. No reason to look back. Does better in windy conditions. Pulls through grass way better.

mainly just for woods, and i think a tad less vibration. only speed difference i noticed was with the kipawa, basically got better speeds on lower speed settings, i feel like that helps the battery

The normal blade on that minn kota is called the speed prop (I think) the wedge will run slightly slower but be much better in the weeds. I have both props for my 40lb. Thrust. I get 4.2 mph on the standard speed prop. And 3.6 on the wedge. This is on my 12.7 foot bonafied Kayak I'm sure this difference approx.16% would be close to the same on any boat with that motor and prop setup.

Two blade is for grass and weeds.

I have a 70 LB Minn Kota and I have used both the weedless wedge prop and the kipawa 3 three blade prop and with the weedless wedge prop I can go all day without any weeds fouling the prop but with the Kipawa 3 I cannot even move 6 feet without the weeds bogging down the prop leaving me stuck on the water with a back ack trying to clean the prop.

Big RC propellers actually work the best!

Yes, they do perform better in open water, but they will grab and wrap themselves up in every weed they encounter and they will not survive any impact if you touch bottom or a rock.

@@cwalke32477 I recommend an APC brand 9-4 for better efficiency and an APC 9-6 for more speed. You'll either need to use what are called pusher props for the correct rotation direction or reverse the leads (positive to black/negative to red) if you use standard rotation RC airplane props. Keep in mind that if you do this, although you'll get better performance, you will get wrapped up in any weeds you come across and the prop will get destroyed by anything hard it may smack into. Edit: you can only reverse the leads if you have a standard resistor based motor like a 5 speed. If you have an electronic speed control (infinitely variable), reversing the leads will smoke it.

The Wedge is for grass.

It is proven that 3 Blades drains more battery amps

3 Blades will draw more amps because it's bigger and has more surface. Granted you'll gain a tiny bit more speed but your battery won't last as long. I got my 3 blade for $1 from an Amazon return store. My blades are short and wide not long and curved like yours (TWSS) I'LL KEEP MINE AS A SPARE PROP.

I got one on my 50 pound thrust and it is considerably slower than the original power prop. I loose on average between 0.50 and 0.75 mph with the Kipawa prop compared to the original power prop that it came with. Also seems a bit out of balance, don't even try to put it in 3 in reverse, lol. I did notice that the motor seemed a bit more responsive on the lower speeds. However, I am not putting this on my bow mount motor, rather, it is going on my Transom motor, with the sole purpose of moving me, as quickly as possible (a whopping 4mph average) across all these electric only lakes. I just received a Weedless Wedge in the mail, and I intend to put out a video in the next few weeks, comparing the 3 different props on the water, so that people can maybe get an idea of what they are buying before they buy it. I personally was very dissatisfied with this prop, as I said, the original prop the motor came with worked far better for my intended purposes.

We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

Dillon Hardy I cant believe the difference .... it’s MUCH quieter .. it vibrates extremely hard on my traxis in reverse , but going forward .. both my motors are much much quieter and perform better

The 3 blade might be faster but it’s also draining your batteries faster. Current draw is determining by the load and the 3 blade prop is definitely making the motor work harder. But if it’s faster, it’s faster. I can understand the preference.

Its comical neither of you knows the other could be right, pitch does make props faster and slower AND less blades will always be faster all things being equal.. To compare these 2 vs 3 both would have to be the same pitch in which case the 2 would be faster top end and the 3 faster in acceleration using more load. Ex. the fastest TM prop would be a small diameter 2 blade low pitch prop. (in still water..) ..but trolling motors aren't designed for speed for many reasons.

Hate to be a killjoy. But, I've heard the use of a Kipawa will nullify your Minn Kota warranty. Besides weedless vs non-weedless, prop design also takes into account the load on the electric trolling motor. As it is, trolling motors were not designed as primary propupulsion or to run a long time. They overheat. Also, they are not meant for speed. They're designed for torque, similar concept to a farm tractor. Also, they don't run at the RPMs or with the required prop pitch to get to speed. Where extra torque would be useful is if the wind should come up. I wish you would test some of these ducted thruster trolling motors. I can send you a link but would rather not post it here on this thread. They are of an open design where you can replace the thruster motor with whatever you want, the casing for the motor is a standard size, The speed control (potentiamoter) and the Electronic Motor Controller are all exposed outside the motor. Please provide me with a way to send you that link. They make some that are very powerful: 3500RPM, 3300W 160a at 24v or a 48v version at 2600W and only 55amps all for less than $500 (shipping extra).

You're either missing, or not telling us very important aspect: actual amperage, not your settings in percent. Or at least we need to know what you control: is there a system that is allowing you to control the exact amper count that flows in to the motor, or is it just voltage adjustment, or something else? Point is, the faster the motor spins, the higher inner resistance it has, hence less amps are drained. With two blades your motor spins faster than with three. So you can actually end up with less power consumption at 100% with 2 blades, than 50% with three. (numbers are abstract, but you get the point)

3 blade props have shorter blades to average this out. This way the motor can achieve the proper efficient rpm range. Although i agree i would like to see the amp draw for a real world display of efficiency, your statement of more rpms with 2 blades is simply false. That would only apply in the case you added a third identical blade which means more surface area and more power required. Instead they shrink all the blades and adjust pitch to maintain efficiency.

Nice video, I have to totally disagree. That test was way too short. It also needs to be done multiple times in different area's of where you are. You cannot do a bench test like that for a few minutes and declare a winner. Great job with the presentation. Now IF it is really .5 slower on average that is quite incredible.
