DIY Kayak Trolling Motor - Newport vs Minn Kota

In this video I test out two 55lb trolling motors to see if they have different top speeds on the Bonafide SS127. I have the battery in the front hatch and I am powering both thru a homemade PWM control box. The Minn Kota motor has the Weedless Prop installed and the Newport Vessels motor has the stock 3 - blade prop.
I ran the Minn Kota first and did not charge the battery in between the tests.
Tell me what you think in the comments below.

    Thanks for the video! My minnkota 40 lb. thrust with the weedless wedge gets me 3.4 mph while the minnkota power prop goes 4.1 mph on my bonafied ss127 loaded up. Just for fun i put a 10 x 6 pusher prop (used for RC airplanes) and that took me all the way to 4.8

    In my other video I thought the difference was thrust but after this test I think its just the prop design.

    @@g-wolfoutdoors8150 yes i found the same results. I believe almost all electric trolling motors spin at the same max RPM 1750? The higher thrust does give you some more torque though. So in current wind or chop the higher thrust would win out. But on calm days and lakes like the one you were in, my 40 lb. thrust c2 with a standard minnkota power prop would go faster than your 50 lb. thrust with the weedless wedge. If we both ran the same prop, me on my 40 lb thrust and you on your 50 lb thrust you would edge me out slightly on calm waters but do better in current. The 10” pusher prop i played with actually gave me a 22% increase in speed. I never checked the amp draw, i would think it would be a bit higher.

    @@johnrugani2382 That's really informative! Going to change my c2 30lb thrust prop out when I get a chance. I was wondering why my tiny 10ft kayak was going the same speed as my 14 ft john boat with same trolling motor.

    @@johnrugani2382 Amp draw will always go up. The propellor does the pushing, the motor just turns it and at whatever speed it can do. The amount of effort required is the bit that changes.

    Thank you for these comparison videos. After testing all 3 (the Minn Kota, the Newport Vessels, and the Haswing), which would you pick? It seems like the Minn Kota was a lot quieter without too much sacrifice in the effective speed/power - is that a fair assumption? Thanks again!

    The Newport Vessels seems to have a good overall efficiency with the 3 blade prop. The Minn Kota seems to be a little slower and use more battery. The Haswing is lighter but after 2 hours of running it would enter an error state and not run reliably.

    The Newport has been reliable. Haven't had any issues so far. The 3 blade prop seems to be efficient in forward and gives more power in reverse than the 2 blade.

    This has convinced me to go with the Minn Kota based on price considering that the Newport being only 15% faster. If I'm only saving 3 minutes over a 20 minutes of travel, the extra cost doesn't seem to make much difference to me. But that's just me. It's not like 30 lbs thrust is half as slow as 55 lbs thrust.

    Two advantages of Newport Vessel is a 55lb thrust is only $175, Minn Kota is about $100 more. And, Newport Vessel can be used in both salt water and freshwater, whereas Minn Kota is strictly a freshwater motor. Plus, you can get the 55lb thrust Newport Vessel motor in 30 inch shaft, whereas the shortest shaft on a Minn Kota that is 40lb thrust and up size is 36".

  • @g-wolfoutdoors8150

    @g-wolfoutdoors8150

    It is all related to battery size and motor speed. If you have a 100ah battery and the motor pulls 50 amps on full speed (speed 5) then it would last 2 hours on full speed. On low speed they last a lot longer. Trolling speeds (1.5mph to 2mph) on motor speed 2 or 3 then a 100 ah battery could last more like 6 to 8 hours.
