    One of the best R.P.G's books ever written the rules were workable but the general depth of rules coverage and all the world-building that was thrown in as well now that's what truly made it a great book.

    I still have my copy from 30 odd years ago. When I saw it , it blew my mind after being introduced to fantasy RPG through D&D

    WFRP is most definitely influenced by Runequest, Call of Cthulhu, and Stormbringer, all by Chaosium, rather than D&D. WD ran lots of articles about those in the earlier issues. GW even published the Runequest UK edition. That's where the % based skill and combat likely comes from, the obvious Chaos/Law Moorcock stuff, insanity, the multiple body hit locations, lots of detailed world building, and the focus on role-play and investigation to survive adventures. I think Runequest was far more popular in the WD circles, possibly even in the UK generally. It has a very bronze age, dark age focus too, though WFRP goes far more 30 Years War 16th-17ty century.

    Have a softback version of this that I got around 1990 ISH I think. Brutally tough were a band of 5 or 6 goblins would give you trouble. Remember the advancement being tough too. When you get a new career you don't get the stat upgrades, they just show you which ones you can purchase with XP. Great game.

    I was introduced to roleplaying with WFRP. Still have the books for 1st edition but have a bigger stack for 2nd ed. Only reason I haven't played the latest version is because I have so mmany of the older books. Heard good things about latest edition though.

    Man I love WHFRP. I was obsessed with this book when I picked it up 10 or so years back. I rolled up a party and solo meat grindered them through a couple of fights but never really got this to a table proper. 2nd Edition I did actually play with my group and they just didnt have the same love of low powered fantasy that I do so I only got through a couple of sessions. I have Zweihander which looks like a proper successor to 2nd edition which I really want to play. The only thing close that my party actually loves is Dungeon Crawl Classics which is more low level OSR DND then WHFRP but it does have a 0 level job system which is really fun. Sorry for the tangent but I really do love WHFRP and hope you do a play video of it some day. Thanks for the review!

    Fate Points in 1st edition WFRP officially only functioned as "extra lives". Allowing them to be used to fudge dice rolls and the like seemed to be a fairly common house rule but it didn't become an official thing until 2nd edition.

  • @katfezza4570

    @katfezza4570

    Aye, we house ruled that to allow them to be used as an automatic success on a dice roll, but only in critical story moments and you had to roleplay it appropriately. And given how hard it was to get FP it really made folk think hard if they wanted to do it.

    @@katfezza4570 I think in 2nd edition you could spend fate points too modify or maybe reroll dice rolls, but permanently expend them to cheat death.

    Rogue Trader at some point....? It would be quite cool if you did a book review of some of you fav 40k / fantasy novels, ig the Eisenhorn trilogy, maybe with somebody else sitting with you to talk about it. AND speaking of novels I just went to a Dan Abnett Book signing TODAY in London and got my copy of 'Titancius' signed! He's a great man!

    It's funny you mention the dragon turtle. I ran that Oldenhaller adventure sometime in the 90s when the Hogshead softcover reprint came out. I had the party fight a dragon turtle on the river barge to Nuln with an elf bolt thrower (it was the only mini I had of a bolt thrower), that was being shipped on the barge. It got a bit sporty.

    Never seen a first edition before - we had a soft bound reprint. We house rule it that you get to roll twice on the career table and pick one. We also role S and T stat as percentage for test purposes.

    I just found this with the Enemy Within campaign (The Enemy Within, Shadows over Bögenhafen, Death on the Reik) in my mothers basement. Do you want part of them, I rather not just throw them away… We where very young when this came out where I live but it was awsome and 10 years ahead of others.

    We called Fate Points "Save Your Butt Points". Also, you totally fumbled the character creation - you roll your AGE, and see how many extra skills you have. THEN as an Academic you roll your extras on the Academic chart. When you get your career, you get ALL the stat bonuses, and choose one skill from the career. During play, every 100 XP lets you choose a new skill (or later, stat bonus), and once you have all the stat bonuses and skills from your career, you can move on to a career exist. And Alchemist's Apprentice is one of the VERY few that opens up a Magic career - the Alchemist. I also lost count of how many times you turned right past what you were looking for, like the Alchemist. :D

    Other way around actually. You get one stat and all the skills. And the number of skills for each career can vary wildly.

    I remember my first character in the game. Got everything I didn't want to have. Before rolling I said I hate intelligent weapons. Got blessed with a jealous weapon, that fought better than me any day and would get a hissy cow if I dared touch anything bigger than a dagger. I really don't like flails. Since I was an animal herder kinda class that was of course my special weapon. So there I was: Cheering on my two attacks weapon while trying to stay alive with a dagger in my hands, while my friends lost limbs left and right. xD Fun times.
