Avalon Hill was the company that pioneered the "box" game and called it a bookcase game so you could store the game on a bookshelf. Prior to that, board games like those from Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley were in long flat boxes that had to be stored away in a closet. Great video.

Back in the day me and my friends were into this, and even more into the second edition. At the start no one had any kind of terrain. The best we would get would be a green sheet placed over books ( for hills ), and if you were lucky we'd borrow some modelling moss and use that as bushes and woods. But a lot of that time it wasn't even that - just a table top or the floor ( a green sheet was the height of amazingness ). Used models where we could, but tbh when we started fielding larger armies, we just used to sub in cardboard instead. Had lots of great games. Eventually managed a few epic siege games when that came out in '88 and that marked the end of us playing Warhammer. Good times.

It’s super interesting listening to you talk about the past of this game systems and how there need to be a adventure/dungeon crawl game. Now in the future, this game lives as a fan support game through T9A and the guys at Veil of the Ages are trying to market the T9A ruleset to be used as a dungeon crawl game (which I’m excited for). Funny how things are cyclical. Also, thank you for walking the dog on this one and going into detail. It was a great history lesson!

I know exactly what you mean with paste ups. When I attended Commercial Art back in high school in 87' 88', to get images for screen printing, we would have to work in tandem with the print department making PMTs or what you call paste ups where after gluing all your cut outs to a white glossy page with targeting bulls eyes for alignment, you would then shoot a final PMT that when printed blended all images together making all cut outs appear as a single solid image of text and pictures. This could then be light boxed and turned into a screen for doing screen printing in our case or used in the print department for copying a s a print page.

I remember doing D&D battles at my local club at the time and hearing this was coming out, me and my mates were so excited we all bought a copy as soon as it came out and loved it. I went on to play all Editions over the years ( some more than others 😉) until it died and now I’m an avid Kings of War player as to be honest rank and flank fantasy has always been my favourite gaming type. Italian Princess 😂😂😂 my Mrs gave me such a strange look when I just burst into laughter, I had my head phones on 😉😎.

For some really ancient gaming trivia. That counter-charge mechanic is very similar to the one in the Wargames Research Group ancient rules. The idea for those rules comes from a comment in Caesars tactical treatises that Infantry were better on the move when fighting other foot. Lancers obviously wanted to use their lances so counter charged. There were other moves like the Parthian Shot which allowed horse archers to shoot back over their shoulders while evading.

Great video, Ash. I don't know if you have a copy, but lots of this initial ruleset, and consequently later Warhammer, is pretty heavily borrowed from the Tony Bath Ancients rules in Donald Featherstone's 1962 War Games book. Specifically, morale, bow skill, and the d6 based armor saves with armor types and shield. Probably why they credit Featherstone and Moorcock in the book, or at leas they do in 2nd ed.

  • @johnashley-smith4987

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I was obsessed with D&D in this period! Amazing you still have your copies. I remember seeing this in "Dragon" magazine and wishing it would show up in a local shop. Also remember around this time Citadel figures starting to appear in local hobby stores. Still have a few lead classic wizards and dwarves, each one a unique character model for your D&D adventurers, designed by Micheal and Alan Perry I think. Did you ever play or see a sci-fi skirmish game called "Strike Team Alpha" that is from a couple years earlier, (78) by "Gamescience Publications"? Far as I remember it was one of the first in the genre designed for miniature play. Yeah, there was some Avalon Hill box games but they were hex maps and cardboard counters. I also remember a wargames based on the "John Carter; Warlord of Mars" a friend had, Barsoomian airship battles. Anyway, thanks for the video, and I look forward to the next trip down memory lane.

You should move forward to 3rd edition and then do a battle report with a custom designed army built from the rulebook! Also it seems like a game of Warhammer back in the 80s had more in common with a modern RPG session than it does a modern, competitive tabletop wargame.
