I got my copy from a charity shop in 2010. I saw it in the window priced at £8. I never ran into a shop quicker.
I’m so glad Pedro Kantor was in the book. Crimson fists were everywhere when I got into the hobby in the late 90s early 2000s. Glad to see they were there from the start

It seems like the Crimson Fists were the original poster boys for 40K and the Ultramarines were just a joke name in the book, and now here we are.

Pedro Cantor was a joke character based on a guy named Pete who worked for Citadel. Cantor was portrayed as an incompetent leader whose poor management of the planet he managed devolved to the point that the defenses had deteriorated to the point where orks were able easily invade.
This brings back a ton of wonderful memories of when I got into 40K while in college (1992). It was the year before 2nd Edition came out, and I used the Battle Manual and Vehicle manual at that time. I fondly remember games played on tables comprised of aquarium terrain and blankets thrown over piles of books to represent hills. I still own all the kit-bashed vehicles I created at that time, when GW wasn't really producing anything but Rhinos, Predators, and bikes.
Such a brilliant foundation for G.W to build upon afterward.
I was 14 in 1987 when the HC RT rulebook was available. I lived in a small town but my awesome Dad worked in the city to our north and picked me up a copy of RT from a now sadly long gone game store called Island Fantasy. Hey, GMG, somebody in the comments has probably mentioned this but the two page Landraider p.110-111 pictures two differnt types of Landraiders: Hellfire Landraider and the what's now called the landraider Proteus. Anyhow, a fun flip through! I've a few copies of RT and plan to play this year. I've been working on scratch built terrain, some RT figs and others et cetera.
Yes! Awesome! Battle at the Farm +1.

Renamed over several publications as: The Battle of Ork's Drift... do you get it? Ork's...
Superb! Such a blast having a trip down memory lane with Ash! I was 15 when this came out and I loved it, having already been playing WFB for a good few years - many weekends spent painting, building and playing this and WFB 1st & 2nd editions - man, those rose tinted spectacles are good!
Nice overview. I've found that RT with the Book of Astro lists and select White Dwarf articles to be about the most fun way to play. The point value calculations are flawed in the RT book and were corrected in errata. The numbers don't always add up properly. Also the scatter rules were changed in one of the first articles for the game because they were problematic in play. Marines were bumped up to the 4 toughness to compensate for all the extra rules orks got over three books and the Eldar gained with aspect warriors in articles. And overwatch gets added for them and everyone else. The army lists in Astro are awesome, most especially becasue you can have ork assault troops on power boards. Battle Manual is pretty much 2nd ed and you are better off just moving into that edition. That paperback edition is actually a revised printing that corrects many of the typos from the old harback version. It's definitely the one you want for gaming and runs about teh same as trying to import he reprint hardcover.
Man this takes me back.... The artwork, the psyker rules, the rubric..
I've been looking forward to this for so long since literally like Monday. But real talk this video is a microcosm of the unique experience GMG provides me. Mini war games where something I discovered as a kid ash passion and presentation have allowed me access to a sliver that same middle school joy of play and creation. I still enjoy other things from my youth but the nostalgia is an adult facsimile. Thanks Ash and GMG community.
I remember buying the Rogue Trader book from my local hobby store (which had more trains and rc cars than game related stuff) and it still has a place of honor on my shelf today. So many memories. :)
It's interesting that RPG's influenced the birth of this tactical tabletop wargame when RPG's were originally born out of... tactical tabletop wargaming. The circle of life!
I HIGHLY recommend the Warrior Tier, 1987 video, it uses the artwork from Rogue Trader and make a crazy story out of it. Cant recommend enough!
I also still have my original copy I bought in a book store in Tacoma WA when I was 14. It was a store with a small RPG book section and I saw this book and assumed it was a sci fi roleplaying game. I was not disappointed. For years my game group played it as a tactical RPG. Each player made a character and 2 henchmen. So the party was 4 main characters and 8 retinue. Great times. The only character I remember in detail was my best friend who played an ancient robot character as his PC and he used an original lead Ral Partha Battletech Atlas mech miniature as his robot body.
Crown Royal bag full o' dice - NAILED IT! Had me lol'ing, too accurate
So much great art in that book, including concept art for miniatures, or scenes based on existing figures, but also a lot of gonzo stuff that never was tied to an official rule or miniature but could inspire creative reinterpretations by players building unique forces with no thought for the restrictions of tournament play
I've still got my hard back copy of the rulebook. All so got the original 40k Chapter Approved. This Game system was released the same year as the great storm of 1987.
Stuff like this is why I love this channel. Thank you for all your efforts over the years man, Big love.
I'd love to see a TBT using the original Realms of Chaos books with a short chaos warband campaign using the original rules. There's a vibe to both of those books that has never been recreated.
Good review. White Dwarf 100 was a must have for better dreadnought construction rules.
I'm so glad I bought an original copy years ago, before eBay prices went crazy.
Great review, once again! I love my hardback Rogue Trader, bought when i was 8 in 1987 from Games Workshop in Sheffield in the UK!
You can still buy Laserburn (and the old, pre-GW 'armored space-knights' miniatures) from Alternative Armies in the UK! They definitely may look familiar to 40k players. Awesome to hear you talk about it!
This was a cool review. Will you be continuing the story of Bad Day at Hell's Reach as you move through the various editions? I think it would be fun to have an unfolding narrative as the game morphs around it.

I read your comment as 'bad hair day', so I scrolled back up, I was like: 'Nah, Ash looks stylish as usual...' 😆😆🤣🤣😁😁
Lol. I had forgotten about the custodes being in there. ‘The sexy custodes’ lol
What a trip! Rather than Battle at the Farm, and maybe this is not possible because of covid, but it would be amazing if you could do a game with an actual GM. Never seen anybody try that...!
According to the credits list on the left hand side of the table of contents LAND RAIDER MODEL: Dave Andrews
just came across this. picked up a used (good condition) copy a couple months back to replace my 30year old cough cough photocopied version i got from the local gaming group back in my teens. nostalgia to the max. I favour my realms of chaos books and my 2nd ed rules/chaos codex stillto this day and got back into playing late last year after 25yrs off the tools so to speak.
It was interesting in the new edition of Necromunda Andy Hoare brought back the Cool, Intelligence and Willpower stat lines, although I feel like they aren't used much in the game.
So many great ideas for adding options to your narrative 40k and Necromunda game play with this edition and potential models and convertions.
Love seeing this type of stuff. I didn't know about all of this growing up so it's awesome to see and here about the early days.
Awesome review! Its fantastic to see Rogue Trader getting wheeled out online and I'd love to see Battle At the Farm played out too! It would also be awesome to see a full campaign using it with all the randomness that the classic rules entail. It's also super exciting to hear you're going to do a 2nd edition series too as it's still my favourite edition as its what I first played back in the day. Are you planning on working further through the editions as the move to 3rd/4th was pretty huge game wise and resulted in many 2nd edition 40k fans leaving the hobby. I'd be interested to see how these various editions play out as they all look like they are fun in different ways be it the RPG like 1st, the skirmish action movie style of 2nd or the streamlined 3rd/4th and how they developed into the more modern and current editions.
It's remarkable how close these rules trend through necromunda and necromunda has gone full circle in lots of ways, stat lines etc
Page 210: Cthellean Cudbear. A big furry creature you would not want to bump into; especially if you're just ship crew.
Yes of course we want the battle at the farm haha
When the metal rings tore loose on my Crown Royal bag, I replaced it with another Crown Royal bag. Unfortunately, the more modern ones (2000s) were not as flexible, so it couldn't fit all my dice in, so I switched back and am still using that original.
So many memories...!
The Land Raider model was built by DAve Andrews. It's actually listed in the credits at the front of the book.
my og copy fell to bits. its really interesting that its a really really good skirmish game and feels like in an alternate universe 40k stayed as a skirmish game which feels like it might actually be better.
Great overview & insight into such a wonderful game! I'm running an original Rogue Trader scenario I've written at a small oldhammer convention in May (Portland, Oregon). We would love to have you & your Flesh Tearers join us one year.
Got my copy about a year ago. I actually enjoy the background and tone quite a bit more than modern 40k, and despite the rules being kind of clunky I wish GW poured the same amount of passion and fun into their current rules
Thank you for the flashback!
More Epic Armageddon battles please! You are the only ones who have made epic BRs where you can actually see whats going on haha. Thanks for the awesome content!
Yeah one of thé most suprising ans yet hoped for review ever. Thanks. 🤗 Édit : wait WE can buy this reprint !? 🤯

Battle of the farm!
Such a great book.
So many memories. This book really shaped my Sci-fi and gaming tastes. My memory of battle oat the farm is it’s a bit boring.
Although there’s a few less that good pieces in it, I personally have a fondness for the art from RT and other books of that era (3rd ed Fantasy, the Realm of Chaos duology, etc) and I vastly prefer it to the art in modern GW books. Like minis of that time it’s just bursting with so much character, something newer pieces of art lacks. And that’s not nostalgia talking as I was born in ‘88. When you were flipping through the bestiary, how could you get to the Inquisition section and skip over Inquisitor Obi-wan Sherlock Cluessau? 😜 Reading through RT and the RoC books, I’ve always gotten the impression that they were less rulebooks and more toolkits for you to use for your games. Games of RT/Fantasy 3e feel very much like a collaborative affair rather than a pick up game and definitely aren’t built with competitiveness in mind, which actually feels kinda nice.
I absorb love the art from the original book! Edit: there was a vehicle expansion?? I totally missed that!
@jack-a-lopium

There was even an alternative damage on vehicles method published in White Dwarf... where you collected up transparent acetate sheets with each vehicle printed on it, and you'd have to roll dice and look at the sheet to figure out where you damaged the vehicle... kinda glad that one didn't stick... 🤷♂

Definitely do the Battle at the Farm. It's what people who got the book would most likely play first, and since you are doing this retro look at the game it would be remiss of you not to play it. However, it's your choice 😀 The weapon pictures in the book, along with their fun little 'in world' annotations always bring back fond memories for me. Kill ratios and such like.

Try to find the Book of the Astronomicon, Compendium and Companion for Rogue Trader. All the army lists are compiled in those :)
I had a hardcover version Rogue Trader book. Sad I let it go at some point. I'd buy a fresh copy if GW sold it again in 2022. GW should do a print on demand service for OOP books. No reason not to keep making $$ on stuff that's written and laid out. :-)

You better believe people tried that. I watched a guy play a 5th Ed fantasy tournament game with the cardboard bolt throwers and griffon for his High Elves.
Since the paper counters in the back of the latest reprint were published by GW, does that mean you can use them in a GW store and at official tournaments? I mean they'd need to be painted and based, obviously.
