Helsreach is the most major settlement on Logan's World and there the humans, orks and other aliens rub shoulder to shoulder. A fleeing Imperial Army transport meets with some local gang members during a routine shipment and tensions rise. Chris and I throw down some 'out of the book' Rogue Trader in this first episode of the Sci-Fi game that started it all.

It really sucks that this cyberpunk element of life outside of major armies has been erased from most of 40K. This and the Rogue Trader ship captains are the most endearing part of 40k originally.

Brings back memories. Winning a competition in White Dwarf and waiting four weeks for the rulebook to arrive in Ireland from England! First game with my best friend used standees from the Judge Dredd RPG. It was a scene out of Die Hard. Turn one, Judges pull up in Pat Wagon expecting to lay down the law, not realising the gang has a missile launcher! One shot later the two Judges (out of the entire squad) that managed to make their ejection system saves (we had specced it as having one) retreated off the board. Fastest game ever but such fun.

I have so many fond memories of RT and I've been gearing up to run it again this year. I was an avid player through maybe 4th or 5th edition but I don't really enjoy the newer "reroll 1's, reroll 6's, my circle of troops attacks your circle of troops" gameplay. The earlier game was about creating an interesting narrative first. It's still a ton of fun and it's easy enough to pare down the clunky bits you don't like. We always laughed during and after the game and rarely got salty over the results.

Oh man! Brings back memories. Realy love Roguetrader, it was so much more eventfull in that things could go in different directions. More like Necromunda actually. But ... one of the worst rules ever, must be "Following Fire". I remember we (in my playing group) argued about homebrewing some sort of alternative instead, like multishots. Then 2nd edition came out. There where many small rules you could use, that where fun. Like ... * hidden movement (needed a GM though to be functional, and the rules was a bit clunky also, but interresting). * Dual wielding pistols shooting (you could use two pistols and shoot both, but got -1 BS on both). * Extended range on most balistic and energy weapons (you could try shooting targets further then the stated long range, but it became harder). I Think you missed one or two rules! In the charge, the charged models may choose a response action, like fall back, or stand and fire (or something like that). Or do I remember it wrong? And dont "slow" on weapons mean that you cant move and shoot in the same turn? And I think Heavy Bolter is slow (and also Heavy Stubber), Im not sure though. Suspensors are only to take away the move penalty for heavy weapons (I think). Hard to remember correctly. It was even hard understand some rules, so there where many rules we used to play wrongly, for years untill some one re-read the rules in detail and suddenly realised wheve done it wrong all time. Cheers.

Brilliant! I have to say that was a lot more fun to watch than modern 40K games - I know, apples to oranges and a lot of nostalgia bias in that statement. Anyhoo, seriously happy memories from 30 plus years ago - so many yoghurt pots, polystyrene packing bits and random broken electrical devices were sacrificed to my terrible terrain building skills back then - I was a one man recycling demon.

I wish, for fun and profit, GW would put out a rulebook like this that uses their modern range and some of the modern lore. But like, a wackier, freer, more inventive alternative version of the 40K universe, the way Blood Bowl is to Warhammer Fantasy. A child born from Rogue Trader and the 40K universe of the last 10 years.

I find it hugely ironic how today GW ruthlessly prosecutes anyone creating anything that even remotely looks like their IP, yet got their start with models like "not Zardoz" and "not Mad Max". Super fun trip down nostalgia lane though. I just love the narrative quality this game had. I got my start on that green flock mat but it disappeared many moves ago. I can't say I have played anything from this original Rogue trader book in at least 30 years. I sold my entire Rogue trader collection when I went to college and picked up WFB and then 40k again in 4th ed.

I don't know if this is something you're interesting in at all but I'm making sort-of a Rogue Trader community update at the moment, where I'm writing the rules a but more concisely and clarifying some things that may have caused confusion. It's still a work in progress, but I'm around 115 pages in and have a core rules document you can look at if you'd like to take a look. Let me know and I'm looking forward to seeing more RT!

Still an amazing ruleset to this day. I've played maybe a dozen games of RT over the past year. Its still a lot of fun and leaves a lot of contemporary games in the dust. Its definitely a relic of it's age though. A game from a time when tabletop wasn't so concerned with streamlining everything in the vain hope of making it mainstream. Is it unwieldy and imbalanced? Yes. Is it a lot of fun? Definitely. If you play it with a GM and use the random event tables etc its a blast.

Excllent game. I've never played a game just rolling up random guys, as everyone had eitherr the marine box or ork raiders early in and used the typical squad builds from the armies in the book. I'm pretty sure that once you split up a squad, then the unit without the leader can't just be played as a small squad. You normally had to give then specific written orders and the GM then controlled them based on that.
