A step between 1st and 2nd Edition Warhammer 40,000 - this book changed many of the core mechanics of the game from their original, more RPG state to a squad on squad combat game much closer to what we know today. Let's check it out!

I used to have that. I didn't even have the RT book (my buddy did) but I couldn't resist a book full of weapon stats.

I was already out of WH40K before that was printed - I did have the first compendium though (still have it somewhere in fact). Looking forward to seeing how it plays in your next vid - cheers!

Looking back a lot of the stuff that GW did makes sense. They discontinued Epic 40K as they realized that they can make way more money when they sell the amount of minis you need for an Epic 40k game on the scale of WH 40k. Also, they realized that they need to dumb down the rules to get to younger players and they did this in 40k. In Germany, for a long time in the 90s Warhammer was way more popular than 40k but it had a big problem: Warhammer needed skill to play (tactical and estimating distance) and inexperienced players had no chance of getting anywhere (which was frustrating in the beginning). With 3rd edition of 40k the game was much simpler and it started taking off with younger players and so eventually 40k became bigger than Warhammer Fantasy. I only played 2nd edition of 40k (1st was translated to Germany afaik) and this video was super interesting to watch. Thanks a lot!

Overly complex rules don’t necessarily create a more tactical or skill intense game. Similarly, simple rules don’t mean games can’t have high skill ceilings. Just look at chess! Imho, the best games are those which are easy to learn but have huge potential for trying out new tactics or strategies. Having played a few editions of 40K now, I can honestly say 9th is one of the best. The core rules are tight and games are fun and tactical.

As a guy who started with 2nd edition circa 1993 and never had seen this book, this was a super interesting sneak peak. I can see that much of the content from this was more or less lifted straight into the 2nd edition rule book. One thing that would be interesting to hear would be your opinion in a more evaluative fashion on these rules compared with the current set. I mean, how much do you like it apart from the nostalgia factor?

That's something I miss from old codexes is the page or 2 of concept art of weapons and armor. Also pretty neat that the plasma pistol design in that book is basically copy pasted into the current Death Guard line.

Great overview of a classic book. I probably played more games of 40k out of this than even 2nd ed. Back in the day, it was really hard to get games of 40k going as it was all WFB. I don't think that changed until late 3rd or early 4th when the two flipped in popularity. My copy of Companion fell apart too and is in a binder. Old GW binding was something awful. Some of the books they didn't even bother and it was glue spined pages in a cardboard shell, like a pack of notepaper. My Codex Titanicus, White Line Fever, and Waargh the Orks all came it that format.

6:29 That Paul Bonner Ork Big Shoota illustration is so cool. Maybe, after 8th Edition, you could arc back to play Laserburn?

I wish it was clearer on what rules from the original RT book were dropped. For example, the Stand and Fire response to being charged _seems_ to have been replaced with overwatch. But what about units winning or losing a combat based on number of wounds? Are losing units still pushed back and does the winner follow up? It's confusing because of the different "follow up" rule introduced in the battle manual. Are rout checks still made? If so do you still make a rout test when breaking off from close combat?

I never quite got the whole interpretation that RT was meant to be played as a quasi RPG. The intro to the rules clearly states that units are generally squads of 5 to 10 troops and the entries for most troop type models list a typical squad and their equipment with the random generation rules being used for special characters or to cover odd models. The example scenario in the rulebook, Battle at the Farm, illustrates exactly the sort of game Rick had in mind and includes detailed army and squad lists. This is further reinforced in the Wolf Time scenario from the Book of the Astronomicon, though it leans heavily on needing a gamemaster for spoiler free play. I don't know anyone that didn't play the game as a squad based combat with a few special characters. This was especially true if you had any experience with WFB or Space Marine at the time. Now you could and many did, create extravagant backgrounds for favorite characters, but that's the aspect of the rules that is implied and not fully stated.

I was hoping you were going to give some “how to” on the vehicle manual

Do you need the Companion or Compendium as well to get the rules for models or is that compiled into this book too?

Yeah the vehicle rules were crap. You could take all the weapons off a landraider and then buy it for -12 points!
