From the step forward that was the Rogue Trader Battle Manual sprang Warhammer 40,000: 2nd Edition.
This two player Battle Box took notes from 4th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle and reset the game entirely, containing all the rules for the models in the game at that point!

I miss the old art more than anything. Those old books had so much style.
The "Only the insane have strength enough to prosper..." proverb was my senior yearbook quote in '94. Good times. I used to tuck in my Slayer tshirts.
You're a good man Ash, doing the Emperor's most holy work. Bless you my son 🙏
14:30 That John Blanche painting of the mysterious red robed figure with their creepy little sidekick and naked cat-monkey is a lovely vision of grim-darkness. "Datafax" Ah, the elder times, when "Filofaxes" were cool. Designer notes in games are so cool; giving some idea of what the designer was aiming for, even if they missed their target. Thanks for another great historical video.
2ed is where I first started playing 40k! I recently liberated my original 2ed starter box set from my parents loft, which was mostly in tact.
Right in the feels. This was my first wargaming purchase, and also led to my first true death metal record listening experience as it shared a cover with Bolt Thrower's "Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness"
I said this to you before Ash. I miss the hell out of the fucking METAL art. That shit was amazing. I used "Lean in close and listen close brothers, my time is short." Quote in 97' when I graduated Highschool. God, I was such a dork. I remember playing a game of 2nd edition while stationed at Camp Pendleton late the next year, just before October. Damn this takes me back.
Miss those old 2nd edition hand-to-hand rules. I like how it was more of a tussle, instead of the "I punch you, you punch me" that came after.
Love it. The first edition I really played a lot, aside from some learning games of RT. My friend had the starter box and my older brother took his books to work and photocopied them all. I still have them in a binder on my book shelf. I used to read and reread the Wargear and Codex Imperialis books the most.
I swear I remember a Nobz Bike with the Nob sitting where the autocannons sat on the normal one. This was sort of the end of the goofy orks, which was a definite YMMV moment.
First time I ever saw a GW store and learned about the existence of Warhammer was 1998 when I started college! It would be until Age of Sigmar, 17 years later, that I could afford to join in on the fun and start getting into the hobby.
One of my earliest memories of 40K 2e was watching 10 Gretchen killing 4 of my Space Marines. Dice disliked me early on.
My first wargame book. Got it for my 8th anniversary if i remember correcly. Thanks for the "Madeleine de Proust". 🤗
The good and best Edition :)
Rules for tin Boyz you can find in Citadel Journals.
this was my introduction to 40k when i was 11, my mate and me went halves on it using paperound money lol, just purchased this set again all complete except x2 marines for 120 today for my mate as a birthday gift all models unpainted too and thats ace.... so much nostalgia
You are a blessed servant of the Emporer, bringing his works to the ignorant masses of the Imperium. The boxset is fantastic and gave a great game with sub 50 figure battles. Later codex suffered with power creep and big battles could be hours of slugging away at each other (ie stay under 1k points). Unless you are playing a battle over weekend
Awesome ! My first edition into the world of 40k 🔥 great video Ash

I noticed that you didn't show the "Battle for Armageddon" scenario booklet. Aside from the three (four?) scenarios to get you learning the game, I recall it had a mini-campaign as well.
My edition *heart *heart *heart Memberberries....
As I remember it every game of this edition I played was a contest of a turn 1 giant cyclone missile strike vs a turn 3 power vomit. I don't think we ever determined a winner and I don't think the power vomit ever killed any terminators but it did almost always get 🤮 on them.
Used to run a warhammer club at school with friends and ‘played’ 2nd edition. I say ‘played’, we really didnt do it right, I recall one game where all the terrain was setup in deployment zones and the armies behind them, then two hours of shooting each other across the board… I think only 1 or 2 units left the deployment zone in the entire game… haha.
Hahaha, excellent review Ash. I'll never forget how psyched I was reading the wargear book for the first time back in 1996
Roll for initiative was your COMMANDER'S Strategy Rating, which wasnt necessarily the same as your generic army SR. To add to the confusion that some ppl complain about. Part of the fun waa resolving ambiguities and contradictions in whatever way worked for you and your friends.
My favorite era of Warhammer ❤️
There were so many units that had profiles that didn't have models forever. Like the entire Adeptus Mechanicus line, Sisters of Battle (I think they came out right before 3rd right?) and Eldar Exodites. That bloodthirster was brutal back then, my friend and I just playing with those army lists. My friend had half his chaos army as a bloodthirster and a changer of ways and they were just unstoppable lol

Exodites had a Citadel Journal list.

Yeah, sisters were pretty close to 3rd. Man, good times.
Wow brings back so many great memories if when i was 8 years old. Can't wait until my sons are older and i can get my copy out of the loft and play with them. Loving this series

Currently hunting down stuff on ebay as my stuff got misplaced and lost when I left it at my parents'. I found some of it. Not sure if it's enough to play till I go over what I have again. Played 8th with them for awhile, but they lost enthusiasm when 9th edition came along, and now we're all upset you can't even pick your own psychic powers in 10th, so I dug up this. We'll just have to make up rules for stompas and daklajets and stuff and try to balance them, lol. Not that most games will involve anything that big, but my oldest made it a personal mission to collect a stompa mob and just finally succeeded, so I don't want to steal her thunder.
Lovely artwork thoughout the book, super creepy and odd, just how I like it! I never played 2nd Edition as it came out during my accidental 30 year slumber away from wargaming, but I reckon I would enjoy it today with my old RT minis if I ever decided to try and get hold of it. But then again, I might just save my pennies and play RT instead...
2nd ed best edition ever. When 40k was meant to be fun.
I always considered the Imperial Guard strategy rating of 2 was more about the size of the Army as a whole...and the bureaucracy required with-in it to assign assets, etc. So not dumb or disorganized necessarily, just to represent the epic size of the organization.
@nrais76

Yeah, it does say thats taken into account as well when they assugned the ratings. Ash can't really sit there and the read the whole book.
Every unit cowering in hard cover on overwatch, blasting away with OP heavy weapons(2D8 wounds? Wtf?) at anyone who dared move. That’s what I remember from 2nd Ed 😂still loved it to death.
2nd Edition, the best edition... what I play today.
Weren't there Epiccast models that included data fax sheets...for those ork vehicles?
Why do I remember a starter set with Grots, Boyz, Bikers and a Trukk? Which set was that?

More models need banners, a distinct lack of banners in the modern game.

And 2nd edition Space Marine. And 2nd edition ad&d. I see a trend. But not Highlander movies. Only odd-numbered Highlander movies are good.
When were the IG's compulsory command squads added?
Great video!
This was my jam man but I got in a year b4 necrons so there was so much choice a bought loads a when the next edition came out I simply refused to get it or use itt lol I didn't want any change

3rd edition, ugh! "Generic army man game." With messed up rules. My group had grown to about 20 people at that point since me and most of my high school buds went to local colleges and met a bunch more ppl there who played, and we ALL hated 3rd edition. Actually ended up quitting in disgust because of both the mess they kept making of the rules with their revisions and the rising cost of models. I didn't try to get back in until 7th, and didn't ACTUALLY start playing again until I got my kids into it in 8th.
How can that be the Games Day '97 Captain pictured in the book when said book you are holding was released in 1993?
@GuerrillaMiniatureGames

Sorry he’s the 91 captain. The 1 on the tab just looked like. 7 so I misread it :)
Played 2 games so far of 2nd Ed, it is so hero hammer!
Pardon you..."even" a Canoness? Flesh Tearers activity needs to be more closely watched if one of theirs so openly disparages the agent of the Emperor.
Too bad they cut squats out of the game

Yeah. Miss me some squats. Leagues of Votann are NOT Squats.

Am I alone in the fact I don't like John Blanche art? I'm more of a Jez Goodwin kinda guy lol

John Blanche art really does it for me but you are definitely not alone.

@JP O’Neill - nope, not alone; fairly sure there’s one or two of his pieces I like, but for the most part I dislike his work. Especially his overuse of ochre and red as a colour palette. There’s a fair few early GW artists that I prefer to Blanche, like Jen Goodwin and Adrian Smith.
