Pointless trivia notes you'll never need to know: The strange half-squatted pose of the legs was to make them fit the early jetbike and motorcycle models. The kits were manufactured by Matchbox. There are four colours I know of: Beige, green, blue, and later on, the bone-grey. The blue and green plastic materials were probably cheaper; the blue ones were harder and the green ones were waxy. The beige was the best of the three, and the later grey was better than the beige. RTB01 is perhaps not the earliest plastic kit from GW. I used to have a Citadel "Regiments of Renown" box set, which I bought circa 1988, but I remember the box being date-stamped as "1985".

Hercule Holmes Nice pointless trivia mate, lots of cool things I didn't know there. The one about Matchbox is fascinating, never new they had outsourced production. I think you are right on there being earlier plastic kits from GW, I remember the plastic skeletons from Regiments of Renown and the Doctor Who Daleks vs. Cybermen sets. Thanks for watching :)

Well the people who now run Renedra used to work for Matchbox, they then were hired by GW to produce their plastics until they were made redundant and started their own company.

I think the earliest GW plastic kit may have been their "Drastik Plastik" Orcs. They were made in an odd, white styrene material.

There is rumours that these guys also came in Red Plastic, since GW was using Red plastic for miniatures in Ultra Marines and Blood Bowl, and IIRC Adaptus Titanicus/Space Marine, and as such a few batchs of that red plastic got used for them. Now wether that's true or not, I don't know for certain, I seem to recall only ever seeing one picture of a single red RTB01 marine, though for the life of me I can't remember where.

I love those old illustrations showing troops piling over each other firing into every direction. Especially the old Epic manuals had some epic artwork.

Wow, talk about memories. I got mine in 1990 here in the states. They were $30 each box. I made 5 10 man squads, and the other 10 ended up being my Captains, Lieutenants, Chaplains, Apothicaries, Librarians and so on. It was awesome to be able to make your whole army from just two sets. I loved it. The mold release was horrid on these. My first paint job for all 60 was in Crimson Fists. I used soft craft paints as I was just getting into acrylics from the Testors Enamels I grew up on. This, coupled with the mold release, and not knowing I had to wash the sprues; ended in utter disaster... The paint flaked off within days of completing painting of the entire army (including 6 Rhinos (which were $14 USD for 3 to a box). It didnt survive their first game as I hadnt sealed them either... Great sadness, I miss my Crimson Fists... It wasnt soon after that I learned how to strip paint from plastics, and soon I had a partially painted Ultramarines army. This too didnt last long as I began creating my own chapter and color scheme, so what Ultramarines I had were stripped once again and became my own chapter the Disciples of Dorn (not named for Rogal Dorn. My friend and fellow gamer, his middle name is Dorn. I dont think I even knew who Rogal Dorn was at the time). This army existed until well into 2e. They met their downfall when I went to a tournament in a very hot July or August... I left the army in my backseat on the drive home, not thinking I would be stuck in traffic for 3+ hours... When I got home I found that my army had suffered a heat death... 60 marines curled up into melted and deformed parodies of their former selves... 2 of my Rhinos melted inward... It was a travesty... I ended up selling most of my models to a fellow who turned them into an interesting and twisted Chaos Army. Several of the surviving Rhinos were given to a friend for his Retro army many years later. Sadly, that original Crimson Fist army was and has remained the only time I've ever finished painting a full army...

£10 for 30, and we used the think that was expensive. This is so nostalgic thank you, this kit was such a big thing for us as teenagers, and I had 7000 points of marines. It also reminds me that although I did Ultramarines (sorry, Ultra Marines), they were not the default chapter then, not the ubiquitus smirfs of today. I did ultras because I had blue paint from my fantasy dwarfs. Please do get hold of an original skeleton hoard box, that would be awesome to see too. I used to use the skeleton heads with the marine kit to make undead space marines.

+Lee William Hughes 30p for a battle-brother was awesome, it was also the case that GW priced models proportionately to their production cost. So you originally got 3 Rhinos for £10 and two Land Raiders for £13, metal models were more expensive but that was a fair reflection. I think they have got back to some of this thinking now with the Calth / Prospero boxes but they still price load which is annoying and something they need to stop doing (FW don't price load as far as I see except for on some of the character series models). Glad you enjoyed this trip down memory lane, I had tremendous fun doing this video and journeying back to those early 40K days. Thanks for watching :)

@@edgey642 petrol was about 30p a litre in 1988. £10 was a lot of money to spend on models as a young kid in the mid / late 1980's. 20 l&b cigarettes were about £1 or so £10 for 200 which is now about £115

I think Rogue Trader was a tenner as well. Pretty sure I got both for £20. Also we expected everything to get cheaper with plastic......

I missed Rogue Trader by about 20 years, but I'm still strangely drawn to it. Mk6 is my favourite pattern of power armor. I always thought that Ork head in the artwork was a weird, badly drawn Crozius Arcanum though.

Have 20 ready to build from eBay and a metal old skool dread. This box set was one of the single best things that ever happened in the 80's, for me, along with Maiden's Seventh Son and Somewhere in Time...and 2000ad comic. Total class! You can see the 80's look with the big studded shoulder pads. Flaired legs if a practicality, was fate. Can you imagine them without? Love to see someone true scale these bad boys!

I love the good old models. I started off in 40k in 5th edition around 10 years ago but not long after, I discovered the amazing models of the 80s and I've pretty much collected those exclusively since. Love to see videos on the subject. Very interesting stuff.

When I first started out with GW minis, I got my hands on a smaller box of RTB01 Marines. They were great fun to build and play around with.

I love that you wrote "LEIPZIG" on the Marines shoulder, like it's some honour-Badge and not a chill German town

I remember blue, verious shades of green a deep grey and a light grey colours for the plastic as you have here. There were only ever 2 missile runners, I would guess the extra was added by the previous owner, or if it was new and sealed when you got it it was an added mistake. It is interesting to see your old minis, the style we paint them has changed so much over the years especially with all the graffiti and such. the catipult is a nice touch and the banner too. Everything used to have to have a banner... All of my old dreadnoughts have banners and the 2nd edition metal ones too, they dont have a banner pole in the kit anymore. Even tanks used to get a banner or flag. I was using my old Predators and Rhinos in a game a couple of weeks ago, I got a comment that my models all look so old because of the way they are painted up, not only because they are old but because the painting style has changed too. There used to be a shop called Joysave where I lived, they sold all kinds of stuff like Matchbox cars and other models and such, they sold the GW stuff and thats where I bought most of my models from because I was allowed to go into the village, but I couldnt go to the better shops in the city on my own. they sold the RTB01 set for years, between my friends and I were bought a fair few of them in the end, it was only then you couldnt play RT as a skirmish game unless you wanted to make your models from paper cutouts. They must have been on sale at least until the early 90s, and even then I remember getting them after 2nd edition was released just before christmas in 93.

This was the first Warhammer 40K army box set I bought (followed quickly by the Imperial Guard box set) - absolutely awesome box set, so much fun putting together all the different combinations of bodies and armaments. Wish I still had them! I'm amazed you were able to find an intact set.

I loved this kit! I think there were more transfers in the kit; I remember having Ultras, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Space Wolves transfer sheets. I think there were Imperial Fists too. Plus they were all in different colours, one colour per sheet. Unless I got them with other later sets, I'm sure I got them with this box. These were the first marines I ever converted; I carved Space Wolves markings and gems into ten of them, I made a wolf lord out of one; I attempted to make a scout squad (never finished them lol) with carved segmented greaves; one of them was given the assault cannon from the Space Crusade game - they were awesome! Best value kit ever, until, like you mentioned, the Horus Heresy boxed games. I'm still waiting for a full set of 10 man beaky marines in plastic to be released so I can replicate the Rogue Trader Crimson Fists; here's hoping that'll happen if they make another HH game. Great video mate!

AH +Bazooka J Rambo, you used some Space Crusade weapons on yours as well! So did I ! It should be interesting to note that the Space Crusade game was the first ever appearance of the MKVII armour in plastic, while RTB01 the first plastic MKVI's

Inside the original RTB01 boxed set, you would find, 32 plastic space marines (enough for 3 10 man squads and two characters) six heavy weapon sprues (so that one of the three units could be a support squad) along with enough spare heads and accessories to build your models according to the equipment list in RT-40k or the lists in Book of the astronomicon. If you bought the plastic RTB01 box with the original Rhino boxed set (3 apc's) you had a complete army for £19.98.

God I remember this vividly. I think the first one was Green Sprues but somehow I later collected some sandy coloured ones, but don't recall buying a whole 'nother boxed set. Perhaps they released tactical / devastator squads separately later. These were so much fun to build even if they do look a bit primitive today. I'd still one day like to field a few squads of these amongst the newer stuff. Thanks for the nostalgia!

+odgeUK Cool mate, this is quite a trip down memory lane! You recollection is right, a few years after the original 30-marine box GW released a smaller (but much worse value) ten pack. They were so much fun to build and I can remember doing all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff with them. Probably why I enjoy FW Astartes so much these days as they are so flexible. I've still got the White Dwarf magazines where they actually covered games from other companies. And the ones with the little floppy music records.

I remember mine fondly as well. These dudes were the first minis I ever painted. And what an epic picture for the box as well. It was also the cover for Rogue Trader I think which I also owned. Good times, thanks for the unboxing!

When I was twelve, a friend told me about Rogue Trader / 40k and took me to games workshop, promising me that I could buy 30 Space Marines for $30! They had sold the last Rogue Trader Mk VI box that morning. But they had a simpler 10-pack of Mk VII Plastic Space Marines. I wish I'd shown up a few hours earlier.

I love the way the captain's weapon, which I think was originally a flamer, was later used to represent volkite weapons. That was one of the things that irked me about the 25th anniversary model based on the captain in this artwork. They used a plasma pistol instead of this volkite looking one. They also used a "modern" backpack rather than sculpting a custom one - I don't recall if FW had their mkVI/Raven Guard at the time because that came with a proper mkVI backpack.

Those are my favorite Marines right there. I also like the plastic terminators that were articulated. The one inch base and flexible rules let you really use the terrain.

I kept my box from 88 for painting ideas, but clipped, glued, and painted the models. Still have the box, and models. It's fun to look at every now and again.

Oh wow - the chain blade for the bolter - I forgot about them! I remember having trouble trying to attach them straight. My young hands couldn't keep them straight while the glue set :)

The dark blue plastic was an early colour, I've heard there was a grey one as well but never seen any examples though. The old Rogue Trade badge was Heavy Metal AF. How many people opened that box while listening to Iron Maiden? More than a couple.

I would say, that the Blood Angels gained more prominence before the Ultramarines became the poster boys for 40k...

I think they were too, Blood Angels were thee chapter in the Space hulk games, both board game and computer games and they also got most of the box art. Have you noticed how the Ultramarines have undergone a silence colour change over the years? They have dropped the garish red from their vehicles in favor of all over blue?

Yeah thats rather odd. Have they removed all the colours from the rim of the shoulder pads? I think the colour use to denote the company. 1st White, 2nd yellow, 3rd red etc

Dark Angels also were in Space Hulk, the Deathwing expansion set, Space Wolves featured in WD for RT and SH, in fact IIRC, Ultramarines only really appeared in Space Crusade and a little game called.... Ultra Marines which was based around SM scouts and also featured Dark Angels, Space Wolves and Blood Angels. It wasn't until the iconic Codex Ultramarines for 2nd edition which became the core Space Marine codex that the Ultra's started getting the attention, then they did the entire!!! Chapter for Gamesday, and the rest was history!

I have 80 of them. 2 Devestator squads with 4 missiles each, 5 tactical units, and an assault squad using the GW Dalek bases as opposed to jump packs. Just bough a box recently for $260 USD shipped. Mine I bought were always beige. Never had decals included in the boxes. Those were sold in blisters.

I bought this shrink-wrapped with a copy of Rogue Trader at a B Dalton bookstore back in '90 i believe.

yeah. I had discovered the models while in college (as i said on another of your videos) and hunted down more immediately when i returned home. Thankfully my (at the time girlfriend) was very supportive and jumped right in on painting with me, helped me hunt stuff down. She and I were at that bookstore, and she walked up to me with the box/book combo and sais this is that stuff right? My eyes got huge and i was so excited. We bought it immediately, even though we were technically still shopping at that store. lol

Sorry, I tend to be a bit of a story teller.

I remember buying this box set from the GW shop in Liverpool. I was surprised when you opened the box & the sprues were grey. I was expecting them to be blue so you can guess what colour my sprues were. I seem to remember having a large sheet of transfers with different Chapters on it but that may not have been from this box or even from around the same time to be honest. I do remember having a box of Orks from around the same time though cuz it was badly painted Crimson Fists vs badly painted Orks back in the day, ha, ha, ha. I also had some glorious Squats that must have been from around that time... I miss those Squats.

What I’d give to have a box like this now!

I remember this when it first came out. It was the first all plastic miniatures, but there was a skellington hord that was all plastic around the same time, and some metal miniatures came with plastic arms, the imperial guards was one of them i think.

it belongs in a museum for 40k generations ! i have 2 boxes & 2 boxes of imperial guards (and no more kidneys.. !)

Mine was dark blue. Those creamy white sprues freaked me out. I thought I was in a whole Bernstein/staine Bears living in a different parallel universe theory thing for a moment. I also had the Guard and Squat big boxes. I still think those guards in their puffer gilets are the best design.

I enjoyed this one when I didn't think I would! I wasn't around at the time (well maybe just) so no nostalgia but it's nice to see where it began and how far, or not, 40k has come

My hope with Retrohammer is not to just indulge in nostalgia but to look into the origins of modern 30/40K models memes and concepts and show the links between the two. I feel we are in a new period of strong creativity from GW/FW and it is really positive to see that unfold because it does remind me of those early years of Rogue Trader so it also feels the right time for Retrohammer. Pure nostalgia! I remember spending my pocket money to buy one sprew at a time, for £1 each! I remember the green and beige plastic. I wish GW would re-issue the originals.

I had these in the original dark blue sprue colour and the tan. I still have a few sprues left can't bring myself to build them though, nice memories.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I had this kit when it first came out. Original blue plastic which didn't glue very well. The models would just fall apart. Maybe this is why they changed the plastic between releases. No decals as I recall. I painted mine as "Phoenix Legion" or some such. It was a while ago.

Man this takes me back. I bought my box in 1988 and loved the original design. Always preferred the pointy face of the original models.

Blast from the past. I had the green ones, can't remember the exact year i bought them :(. They were pretty awesome at the time, easily convertable and gave you a quick, easy to paint 40k space marine army. A friend of mine painted his pink and called them "Rob's Rectum Raiders" which were a force to be reckoned with in tournaments :D They now fetch about £65 a box of 10 which were the later design box.

+leakycheese £120? are you mad! Still I can talk, I've spent around £20 to get hold of three unused sprues myself...... Old poorly built models tend to crop up quite often mind you if you don't mind doing a bit of work restoring the poor buggers, which is what I'm doing for a few squads at present.....

For about $60 in the fall of 1991, I received Rogue Trader, this box, and a Predator to start my foray into Warhammer..... Sadly, all were given away later in the 90's, around the time of Necromunda's release. :( Now, please excuse me as I finish up some Adepta Sororitas Zephyrim. Edit: Crimson Fists > Ultrasmurfs.

The kit design though was revolutionary in my view and your imagination was the limit in what you could do with the figures. Thanks for watching :)

@@leakycheese we were allowed to submit extra work for extra credit. I'd chosen to specialise in 3d art, so I painted up three Beakies as a single submission. One of my big pieces was a failure, it was supposed to be a clay sculpture of a dragon but I had nowhere near the skill to pull it off. So to make up points, I was submitting everything I could, towards the end I was throwing everything at the wall and seeing what stuck!

Nice one man. These were my first ever minis. Bought from a model shop before I even knew what GW was. Good times!

i can't quite remember but i'm sure there was a brief time when blood drinkers blood angels successor chapter was the box art image for space marines.

from what I remember I got 4 heavy weapon sprues in my launch boxes. I remember having 16 flamers and 16 missile launchers total

I remember waiting for this box to arrive in the Hammersmith store on the day before realise, as i knew manager well so i got mine early :), i so wish i still had mine as i love the penquin head marines, i always remembered mine being blue plastic not the cream color you have

I remember visiting relatives in Barnstaple, Devon in the 1980s and i got this set and a box of 3 rhinos from Youings model shop on Boutport Street (its still there). Both sets for £20. Mine came in this colour with a printed sheet and i think it had instructions on one side and colour schemes for about 12 or more different marine chapters.

I bought 3 sets in the day and one last year. The new ones are still on the sprue while the old ones are in pieces as I try to strip them. Nine Pound and Ninety Nine Pence was a decent investment back then. Not as expensive as the new P Marines.

+James Bigglesworth Wow, good find these are not easy to get hold of these days. Good comparison, the new P Marines (great name btw) are 10x the cost each when compared to their 80's ancestors. I think I will re-assemble them. Watching KZread the best stripper (of acrylic paint) suggested was Methylated Spirits. Even quicker in a vibrating jewelry cleaner. Giving them a go at the moment. Some of the paint is just falling off, but some paint is more stubborn.

+James Bigglesworth, Oil based paints are harder to remove as are heavy gloss paints in my experiance, you may end up just having to settle for removing as much as possible and repeated stripping will lighten but not remove the rest....

Pretty much how my generation got started with 40K, but I don't remember getting the transfers in mine, c.1988.

The transfer sheet that came with mine was for Space Wolves

This is a great video, watching it for the second time now! GW has recently started adding a separate rules sheet for some of their kits, especially the easy to build ones. With the 40k 8th ed core rules being available as a free download, you could at least in principle play with just the included free stats and the free core rules if you are just starting out. :)

I bought a box of those before I collected a 500 pcs army of space ork. Much more fun and interesting to play

Hello, leakycheese, I'm a new subscriber and I'm enjoying your channel, especially, Retrohammer. RTB01, according to the box, originally had 17 sprues, so, you've got an extra heavy weapons sprue which is lucky! Interestingly, it appears that your RTB01 box sprues have the GW copyright tab which wasn't included on the original 1987 sprues. As far as I know, the date tab wasn't added to the sprue until 1991 when the 10 model Imperial Space Marine Squad boxes began to appear. It'd be interesting to know the date of your RTB01 box? I've been fortunate to get a couple of incomplete boxes of RTB01 and 1 complete box of Imperial Space Marine squad box. I'm still searching for a complete beige coloured untabed heavy weapons sprue...

+Charles Marlow Hello! Thanks for your comment and sorry I'm late replying, it has been a busy week! That is a very interesting knowledge you have there and something I did not know. Was the GW copyright tab added after GW became a plc or did they eventually take the production in house (these were subcontracted out to start with IIRC?) I thought I'd got an extra heavy weapons sprue, I had a feeling my original sets only had two in them. Unfortunately I don't know when this box was produced as it was bought second hand.... somewhere between 1991 and whenever thery stopped making them? Glad you are enjoying Retrohammer!

9.99 in 1987 is about £25 now, which is what you pay for 10 tactical marines now.

I know they did Ork and Squat boxes set along similar lines...ie 30 miniatures.

They sure did! If my memory serves me right those sets had 36 miniatures in each. Very rare to find these days, especially the Guard one.

Even with how inferior the molds are to current space marines is still buy that for 10 and gat 3 times the marines rather then a box of tacticals

I am glad to say I started in the rogue trader rules set and have these to this day. Too bad GW is insane with their prices and lost that touch they used to have for Rules and the hobby and prices. But great time back in the day to be in the hobby

I had to Google what a Womble was, now I see why some people back in the day jokingly called these 1st edition Marines "Space Wombles!" Funny!

Little known fact: the Rainbow Warriors were secretly consigned to history shortly after the Marshmallow Massacre of M30.038012, before the scattering of the Primarchs and the tragedy that was to befall their genetic forebear after he fell into a pot of gold as a baby. Such was the embarrassing nature of his death that the Emperor expunged all trace of his 11th son, and psychically scoured the memories of the Terran Astartes who had known of the Rainbow Warriors. The Rainbow Warriors themselves however were not without use, volunteering themselves to lead the Emperor's crusade, to fight the xenos at the galaxy's fringes to the last man. However, the Emperor in his wisdom had a different plan, summoning them to the site that is now known across the Imperium as the Astronomican, although one can but speculate on what purpose or arcane technology lies within if it is not the Rainbow Warriors...

This sounds legit to me, fits with the well know rumours that Legio II, Legion of The Daves was disbanded and absorbed into the Ultramarines after a dark and mysterious event.

i never had transfers in my boxes from what i can remember. mine were that same beige/bone colour, dunno what year, maybe like 89? around there somewhere.

Yes, you're quite right, the earlier boxes didn't include the transfer sheets, those came along somewhat later.

+Brian Peters You can still get new examples of the sprues if you look around on Ebay, you'll most likely pay quite a bit for them but buy once and you're away with 3D printing. Thanks for watching :)

@@leakycheese No problem! It's a long time ago, but I believe the first time I saw space marine transfers was around 1990... I bought a pack of them for £1... ultramarines transfers, before ultramarines were the go to chapter. And they were black, so you had to paint over them anyway!

Awesome. I remember that set. I ended up buying a bunch of esci/ historical Napoleonic plastic figures...came back to sci-fi; but took a few years. Even as a 12 year old; 2.25$ for 50 infantry or 'expensive' space marines? Hahahahaha

So there aren't any metal miniatures available?
