Even within Rogue Trader era there were rule sets for added vehicles like the Land Raider & Rhino. Official kits did come out but those were rare. So players were fine with getting model kits to kitbash, substitute for 40k stuff. Me and my friends used stuff like 1/35 M113 armored personnel carriers for Rhinos. Predators? Soviet BMP series and M2 / M3 Bradleys. Nobody batted an eye. GW started to have better, fancier vehicle kits in 2nd and 3rd edition. The vehicles in the early days were pretty mediocre compared to what regular model makers were doing. I stopped playing around the mid-90s, 2nd edition era. Even though I stopped I still dip into the hobby and look at what's going on. I remember being impressed by seeing those official Eldar vehicles, especially those tanks.

I was very fond of the early WH40k Rogue Trader era. It was a lot more free form and far less dogmatic that the hobby became as time has gone on. For goodness sake there's several depictions of Ultramarines in this rulebook alone in camouflage schemes, like tiger stripes. In modern 40k they're plain jane, vanilla, unimaginative by the book types.

@@toyznthehood Originally my first memories of it in the 80's was becoming aware of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as a book. I somehow acquired I think through a friend some early Warhammer fantasy dwarfs. That I played with as hobbit characters. I was like 7- 8 years old at the time. Eventually in 1990 I got space crusade, space hulk. I certainly remember the 30 duck helmed space marine box set you mention in your video. 30 mini's all the same pose 😂. I had the orcs too. But my favourite stuff was the very early leopard striped imperial guard. I even had the very first imperial guard rough riders. Which looked like cops from RoboCop on horses. My first 40K mini I bought was the metal terminator librarian and another terminator might have been a captain or chaplain. Really early days 1989.

Mk.6 power armor would be my favoritest look of the Space Marines, because it was the first one really and that was the beginning of Warhammer 40,000. I collected bits, especially beaked helmets in very large quantities ... And then the Games Workshop ruined everything: Mk.6 is now the Horse Heresy, not Warhammer anymore.

@toyznthehood the reason I stopped playing with versions past 2nd ed was simple. GW made the decision to remove the ability of players to make thier own characters. from 3rd ed to present, you can only use the pre-made characters that they have developed for the game. if you look at pg 58 of rogue trader, the basic characteristics can be designed by the player. thus, you can make your own heroes. you can even establish an experience award system that allows the character to improve over time. this gave way too much freedom of decision making to the players and GW put a stop to it. with 2nd ed, player creativity was removed. they did clean up some of the games flaws, but you could no longer make your own units. personally, I despise the IGYG format. for decades, I've played an alternating activation game mechanics with considered simultaneous damage. as a tactical game, it plays much better. since we play smaller forces (cmdr, 1 or 2 -10 man squads, and maybe a support weapon or vehicle), it's story and objective play, not points earned for victory. it also means the model count is lower, so every troop lost is important. at the end of the mission, points are awarded. these can be used to improve characteristics of the survivors. after a few missions, the survivors start to stand out and how they get played really matters. as I've posted many times 'GW is the reason I don't play GW games'.
