A true unique masterpiece. Still have my 1e copy here, but lately we're playing 4e and I must say it's the best inheritor of those classic design principles. Any RPG fan ought to at least try this jewel of a game once.

@@fehner27 nope! I played Warlock! solo though, which is like the OSR version of WFRP, and it worked great!

I'll always love AD&D, but WFRP 1E is my favorite RPG of all time. The setting is perfect. The players have to work their way up from basically being nobodies at the start. At the end of our first epic campaign, several characters had become ruling nobility and one became a supreme high priest of his deity. And as you said, the main book has adventure hooks everywhere. Fan-made additional careers, etc. have REALLY kept this game alive. It's simply the best.

My mom got caught up in the D&D scare, but not in a crazy way. She asked if I would get rid of my D&D and I said yes and asked if I could get another game. So she I picked WFRP1E, not really knowing anything except that it looked cool on the store shelf. It had daemons and demonologists and everything she was worried my D&D had. I was so impressed that a huge setting and awesome rules were all in a cool tome. Played it for years and I still have that original hardback from the eighties, though it's spine is missing. This is one of my all time favorites and loved it far more than D&D.

I'm not shocked nor amazed. D&D rules - in every single edition - are just broken. Their broken from the very beginning. D&D by itself didn't have a world to offer. They were published separately - another book to buy. Too much unneeded rules - rolling for treasure, XP for each single enemy, XP for gold, no XP for ROLE PLAYING - which on top of that were split into 3 different books (mooh money milking). Warhammer's world was very appealing to Polish people when it was first published in 1995, as its world is plain Europe mixed with Tolkien. You have that grim feel to it thanks to the setting being down to earth, rather than: Advance to level 30 and you'll become immortal - BECMI. There's even Polish city in it - Marienburg (German name) - Malbork. I suggest checking early Mortiis music - called era 1 - like Crypt of the Wizard, Burzum's Daudi Baldrs, or Arcana's Canter de Procella and Dark Age of Reason. All are perfect for Old World.

Still grin when I think about those suggested adventure hooks in WFRP1e. "Kali's Heroes" : You're soldiers in a long war (with orcs?) who find out a great treasure (gold bars?) are hidden in a location behind enemy lines, and you're gonna sneak and fight your way through to get it. *wink wink nod nod*

I totally agree, Warhammer was an awesome game. The careers were excellent (where else can you play a Rustler who becomes a highwayman and then a noble?) and very humorous. The rat catcher’s small, but vicious, dog was a staple of our group even long after the rat catcher was dead. We went through a number of characters before we realised that there was such a thing as Fate Points. I love second edition for tidying up the rules but first ed still has a place in my heart.

Ah, Warhammer Fantasy. A book I proudly own. What I love about it is that the setting has this craziness of the old Warhammer products (along side Rogue Trader) a lot of elements in the newest additions and the nowadays setting is lost. Sure it's still grim, it's still epic, but now the setting takes itself too damn serious. Too bad that never had a chance to gather a group to play it and... let's face it, solo WFRP is a short and abrupt experience that ends horribly. No way I would try that.

I own the 1st edition book, but I've only ever played 2nd edition. I'm given to understand there's not actually a huge difference between them, mostly 2nd just cleaned some stuff up and made a more flavorful magic system, and I do love it... one of my favorite games I've ever GM'd and my group all had a blast, even just making characters - we had such a fun mixture that included an elvish archer, a Reiklander soldier, and a chimney sweep of all things, among others. I had seven players for that game, and only two were anything resembling a traditional RPG class, and only one character in the whole group was literate. It was great. All that being said I'm also one of those few crazy people in the world that went all in on the strange third edition of WHFRP made by Fantasy Flight, with all the funny dice and the cards and the stance meters, etc etc. I have almost a full set, and I've never managed to convince anyone to play it with me! Organizing all the cards into a binder is fun though.

I'm sitting here with my copy of WFRP 1e. What a joy. What you might also find fun is to go through the art and look for the easter eggs...

I loved it as well back in the days. And only now do I see why I absolutely adore DCC RPG! It take the same features! Level-0 characters, high lethality, weirdness to the max and crit tables too!

WFRP very short and concise explanation: "The goblin hits you with his knife....uh....okay, you get crippled and then died." The only more unforgiving system ive ever played was Rolemaster Middle Earth.

WFRP1e is my first love. You're absolutely right that you can open it on any page and get inspiration.

This was my very first TTRPG. The first one I played, the first I bought and the first I GMed. I was 13 or 14 and I just loved it so so much. I was hooked by it. I read the book all the time. I remember having a flu, with 38.5 temperature and my mom yelling at me for stop reading and rest. First crit a player made was so awesome. So much fun. I tryed to design my very own TTRPG and revision after revision one day I stumbled upon this book again in my bookshelve, and after flipping through the pages and remembering the rules, I just realized that I ended designing an almost similar game! Like this game is so stuck in my heart that it's part of myself.

Really love the flavour of warhammer fantasy roleplay. I've only played a descendant of it (dark heresy 2e), but the critical hit table was so wonderful. I found that it provided me with more substance than any other game I've ever played. It's a little on the crunchy side for me, but I love it so much.

I learned about this game after baseball practice (I think...) in elementary school. My friend's brother got it and he told me all about it. I still love 1st edition WFRP.

Ahh, I'm so happy to hear this one is on your shelf. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, the game I get my name from. It's a fantastic game and a wonderfully terrible world that is the perfect setting to adventure in. Everyone should give it a shot. While I personally am partial to 2nd Edition, you really can't go wrong with either. There's so much content here that you could adventure through the Old World for the rest of your life and never exhaust yourself of content. Adventure fourth!

I love my 1e book. I have to admit I prefer 2e for actual game-play, but as evocative inspiration, the 1e book is hard to beat!

I'm a new subscriber from the 5 Parsecs videos, which I'm enjoying, but this video identifies you as a man of taste of discernment. I'm currently running an online WFRP 2e campaign that began in lockdown. A zealot, a jailer, a corrupt noble and a blacksmith have sought a better life (and to escape the authorities) in the Border Princes... ...they're currently grievously injured and locked in a cult temple below an Inn sufferingfrom warpstone exposure. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose...

Played it for several years then moved on to other games, usual suspects like D&d but also other ones as well. I recently rediscovered the game and I'm taking a plunge into it again. 1st edition has a uniqueness and charm to it that later editions were never able to reproduce. The art is really unique for ex. And the dry British humor is fantastic as well. Only one of its kind, really

I know so many folks with fond campaigns for either 1st or 2nd edition of Wfrpg. Lovely game! Would love to run it sometime (or maybe warlock! Which is like a rules lite Wfrpg 1e)

I have a 3-year PBF game of 2nd edition running, and I love it. My favorite fantasy setting. I even have a PDF of the original Warhammer RP rules that were bundled into the Warhammer Battles 1st Ed from 1983. It was a very different beast because it really did just use the Warhammer Battle rules with some other additions.

Damn fine description. Best sessions ever, unbelievable tension and emotion. Loved it.

Fantastic seeing you cover this wonderful mess of a game. You should definitely check out 4th edition and the "Director's Cut" of The Enemy Within. They brought back Graeme Davis, Andy Law, and a bunch of the original writers!

4th is lame. The art, especially professions. Thanks mate, but I'll stick to THE *Warhammer* and not its wannabe.

This system resulted in one of the most memorable moments in any RPG. In Shadows Over Bogenhafen, the start of the Enemy Within campaign, our group was trying to keep a low profile, but were in need of funds. We decided to challenge the wrestler, as my bodyguard was pretty hefty and strong. Partway through, I had a couple of ridiculous rolls that resulted in a roll on a critical hit table. The result was that I tore his arm off at the shoulder. In the ensuing stunned silence, I said "Oopsies" and left the ring. One of my party went to collect our reward, while the third reminded me to put the arm back. I threw it into the ring and we left....but were no longer keeping a low profile.

I loved this series before, but as someone working on an AD&D 2E campaign that I started as a joke who has come to like 2E more than 5E, this is a great way to learn about stuff I missed!

Although I was a WHF player back on the day, the RPG never caught my eye… but we had very similar experiences (with all the grit and being a normal PC, and dark fantasy) with the Spanish RPG Aquelarre… which, for what we can see in the opening, it also got your attention!! :)

Your enthusiasm for the game is infectious! Like you I instantly fell in love with WFRP 1e, but that was a few years (and editions) ago. Viewing your vid today has inspired me to pull the book from my stacks and give it some much deserved attention.

Loved this game. Played 1st and 2nd, own 4th and have read most of it, but mostly I game with my kids and I honestly don't know the logic of having 5 metagame currencies to track. Of course, I refer to Fate Points, Fortune Points, Resolve Points, Resilience Points, and they all do slightly different but related things and all have to be tracked separately and regenerate at different rates and in different ways, and to this you add Momentum, which otherwise would have been a simple mechanic. 1st edition is my favorite. Certain aspects of the rules are explained literally backwards compared to the way every other game handles skills and in-game actions (if you've read it, you'll know - i.e. for instance Mining skill gives a bonus to Search Tests to find secret passages underground and a bonus to related Construct Tests, meanwhile a separate section of rules lays out what a Construct Test is, what a Search Test is, what a Risk Test is, etc. and THAT'S where it tells you which attribute to roll against. You need to find the Test that matches the verb for the thing you're doing in the game world, and then sperately see if you have any skills applicable to it. It gets easier with practice. This version of the setting was still in its infancy and was a wacky merger of Wrahammer elements with Tolkein and elements of D&D, especially evident in its magic systems and bestiary, whereas later editions, while cleaning up the rules also tried to eliminate or downplay elements that weren't uniquely Warhammer, so that, for instance the magic system in 2nd edition more closely mirrored the then-current version of the war game, it suffered for it from the standpoint of a roeplaying game. To an extent, Realms of Sorcery helped, but it was still tightly tied to the color system, and 4th edition continues that. I also liked the greater freedom of the setting in its infancy. And this book! Wow. Everything you need really is in one book. My group ran multiple campaigns for decades using just this book, or this book with perhaps one or two characters that had a career from another source book - wood elf wardancer and dwarf runesmith stand out. My first experience was a friend of a friend who I had met twice handed me the book and told me to read it because I was GMing it starting next week. Next week came, I hadn't had a chance to read it, and he said "roo bad, run it." So I did. He was very intimidating. I didn't get around to reading the rules til months later and some of them I chose to ignore because the way I was already doing it made more sense to me. That first campaign I borrowed plots from ad&d modules, put in a weapon shop run by a dimension traveling dwarf based on the HeroQuest Dwarf who sold items from Wrahammer 40k and converted from Rifts, and it was just a fast and loose zany good time, pretty much only using the careers and xp, loosely interpreting the skills, and the combat system and extensive bestiary. Everyone had s blast. (And the guy who handed me that book? Well, he was my best man, except the wedding didn't happen, but that's neither here nor there.)

If you want a lighter weight and easier to get into game that is nearly the same, try the RPG called Warlock. It has one unique element that the "cool" jobs like Knight or Arch Mage are prestige classes that unlock later. You start out as things like highwaymen, or rat catchers. Also, magic can go wrong and cause permanent problems for wizards.

I got acquainted with the old world years back through Warhammer Fantasy Battles 4ed, but had never played the RPG. Recently I did some solo play in First Edition, and I every single point you made in the video fit perfectly to my experience. Awesome video, distilled every point right!

Love this game so much. That book is the crown jewel of my collection. And I've barely ever played it. Sad but true.

WFRP2E is my "first" edition. It's a shame they didn't get a chance to finish the line, but it still stands today as the best version of the WFRP system. I admit WFRP1 has more style, though. I was lucky enough to find a copy. Cheers!

Warlock also has some flavoring from another good British RPG - Advanced Fighting Fantasy.

There was (or is) a humble bundle for many WFRP books. I bought them all and didn't start reading into the rules yet, but your video makes me curious. The setting sounds pretty nice. (=

Yeeeboi. WHFRP was rad. I never got to play it much though. :(

This series is a bit spooky as it follows my gaming experience extremely closely. MERPs and WFRP were central to my RPG playing in the 80’s. I still have my 1st Edition hardback book which was bought when it first came out. I still consider it to be the system used for the best adventure I ever played. However from here on in it will be new as I stopped playing for 30 years. I’m curious to see if Traveller warrants a mention.

Tis a beautiful thing and gradually lost a little bit of that magic with every edition since. The art in 4th edition is so absent of that original vibe that, when I'm running it, I have to whip my 1st ed book off the shelf to have a sniff from time to time just to get me back into the groove...

I agree about the art. When you have a picture of a burgler in the 1e edition they are climbing through a window. In 4e they have tools for breaking an entry strapped to their body lol. Why?

I only ever played 2nd edition, which may have ironed out some of the system kinks. Great setting though. Deep in gallows humor.

The video games, and even later editions of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle version of the Old World, are in my opinion *very* different places from the dark low-fantasy of muck-covered WFRP 1st Edition. Which is fine! (I was even in one of the earlier WH video games - I think I voiced the Dwarves and the Skaven, and maybe the Dark Elves? It's been a while...) They're just not really the same vibe, and for me, nothing beats the true grim filth and somehow-hilarious-hopelessness of WFRP 1st. No "Big Damn Heroes" there... ;)

The Sage's Library is a lot of fun - you have some stuff on your shelf I've never encountered, but I gotta tell you I'm going through some serious MM&D withdraw.

Warhammer fantasy and 40k roleplaying is something I am very desperate to play because of the world, atmosphere and how you are just thrown in the world as normal people. Sadly I am surrounded by the domination of Dnd and it really made me depressed that I feel like I would never get even the slightest chance to even play a character, I did try being the GM but I wasn't as enthusiastic than being a player and when I talk to my friends about it, they out right refuse to play because of how difficult it is. WHFR and WH40K is something near and dear to me that I can only watch at a distance and only see how it is played but never find the chance to even be apart of one.

When can we expect season 3?
