In the video you said "people with autism" (person first language) a few times and most of us (but I don’t speak for everyone in the community) actually prefer identity-first language, such as "autistic people". @@treacletatts I’m not autistic so I don’t speak on this particular interaction; it’s get kind of caught up in the personal preference and this is a tricky situation already optically speaking. From my perspective as a person with disabilities and a sufferer of substance use disorder and from medical ethics classes it’s akin to the prose People of color (vs the reverse 😮). I think if you aren’t sure you emphasize the (person) who then is (adjective). I will put the descriptor first just for myself when I’m dealing with financial aid or cases when I kind of want to emphasize that I am different (gurl gotta prose when he prose lol) but for others I emphasize the person because I don’t know what they prefer and everyone is just a people in the end. 😊

@@lizzymandile2022 real,, i think it applies to other ND people as well, i used to say stuff like "person with ADHD" until i got diagnosed and my mum got realll invested in the topic lol. i only found out a few years later that ADHDers prefer being called ADHDers than people with ADHD. it's a small thing but the nuance is totally different

@@Zectifin The blind leading the blind definitely. The insult I'd have to work harder to look up, which really isn't worth it to me. It was a view of the time that disability also meant moral inadequacy. That's just how it was. The expressions predate Jesus and can also be found in Roman and even Buddhist texts. So he probably grew up using them.

Just throwing this out there, as someone who lives in TX and has only ever been tattooed in TX, everything is always wrapped, sanitized, the whole 9. I've been to a tattoo studio on Friday the 13th, and between every client, each artist cleaned and rewrapped their stations. This is not a TX thing, just Ariel apparently.

Same. I’m on the other end of the state from Ariel, but the studios I’ve been in down here always had everything wrapped. I’d just assume that the health code standards are the bare minimum and that any tattooist worth their salt wants to be above that mark.

@@singingsiren82 Yeah I've been tattooed in several locations around Dallas and the only furniture that I've seen cling-wrapped were the tray with the inks/needles/etc and whatever surface the body part being tattooed was sitting on. The arm wrest always gets wrapped when I'm getting an arm done, and the bench has been wrapped when I was getting my shoulder and sternum done, but otherwise they just wipe down the chair before and after I sit on it.

Surely Texas has dollar stores, right? They sell cling film. And Texas definitely has Walmart. Point is, idk what she thinks it actually costs, but it's not much. Still, all that cleaning, wrapping, unwrapping, & re-cleaning would probably cut her tattoo time by idk an hour or two a day, and that's losing out on a whole 1 or 2 hundred dollars _and_ several Ttok videos. The horror! And for what, "client safety" and "not spreading staph & hepatitises A through E"? ↼‸↼ She is so greedy and willing to harm people to squeeze out pennies. Right?? As someone who's completed a Bloodborne pathogens course for a piercing apprenticeship, you have to treat blood like a biohazard. You need to assume you will face some sort of danger when encountering someone else's fluids therefore you have to clean it while using PPE (personal protective equipment). It's not only to protect yourself, but your next client who sits in that chair. I hope she knows she can't just wipe it down. Some shops have special cleaners for that.

My partner is autistic as well, and so are one of my cousins and my nephew. I love all 3 dearly, exactly as they are. And I can't imagine anyone thinking that a kid that is slightly different is in anyway worse then a kid that dies at 7 from measles. The ablism is thick and gross among the antivaxxers

My country is currently making VPH vaccines mandatory for every teen at age 11-12 (expect those who have allergies and such). And I hear people say the most obscure reasons to not do it. I am part of the first generation who got it. We know for sure, 15+ years later, it is super efficient and low risks, yet they refuse to hear it. They'd rather have their kids get higher risks of developping a cancer.

I worked with autistic adults who cannot care for themselves, the exact kind of people autism speaks likes to scaremonger about, and they disgust me. Most of the adults that I worked with were some of the nicest people i've met, way nicer than most neurotypical people, especially those autism speaks supporters. (and the ones that were jerks were jerks despite their autism, not because of).

the last time i got tattooed, the artist changed his gloves at LEAST 14 times. i genuinely lost count. why is she acting like other artists do the same shitty practices as her omfg

Yeah last tat I got was only a couple hours… artist cleaned the table/work station… changed gloves set up work station… changed gloves… shaved he area and applied my stencil… changed gloves… unwrapped the needles and set up his machines… changed gloves… and that was before applying any ink… everytime he touched his drink or needed a little more ink he changed gloves and used a fresh ink cup (maybe changed gloves every half hour while applying ink)…

I agree I have a nephew who's autistic and didn't know it was considered offensive. As my sister his mother wanted me to draw her an autism awareness tattoo of a heart with puzzle pieces and a banner to put his name on it to show her love and appreciation for her little boy. I can see people getting the puzzle piece if it's someone they know there close to and love but it's another thing if you're just getting it because.

Should of mentioned that the drawing I did was for her to send to a tattoo artist to do. Long story short she never got the piece tattooed on her but she does have the drawing hanging on the wall in her home with pictures of all her children who are very much alive and she cares for without the aid of a caretaker.

@Lady Creda it sounds like you and your sister love your nephew very much. I'm definitely critical of the client in the video, although it's obvious that Ariel is most at fault here. I simply don't believe it's responsible a) of a client and b) an artist to get/do blindfold tattoos of anything regarding a social issue, asking her midway through if she was offended by puzzle pieces was inappropriate. It should have been a planned and researched tattoo. My general rule of thumb is to make sure you understand what symbols mean before getting them permanently put onto your body. As an autistic person, seeing someone want an 'autism' tattoo while clearly not having a clue about the actual autistic community is frankly just icky.

I went down the tiktok rabbit hole of her content after the first video so I totally get the watching a car wreck being unable to look away 😂

My artist left the industry to become a special needs teacher, but she still tattoos in her free time and mainly for friends. She tattoos from home, however she has a dedicated room that only her and her clients go into. It’s set up like a shop, it’s all hygienic and she sets up and breaks down the same way she would in a shop. So I do think there are situations where it is acceptable to tattoo at home, but it definitely should not be filmed and posted on the internet.

One of the best tattoos I ever got was in a completely similar situation. My friend's uncle had a tattoo shop in Puerto Rico. After the hurricane in 2018 his shop was destroyed and he came up to Ohio to stay with family and hustle some money up. I had a hideous purple rose that looked like a bruise, and he turned shit into gold. My cover up is one of my favorite tattoos. He had a proper bed, wrapped everything, gloves, everything 100% professional.

I think there is a difference between a home tattoo and a home tattoo studio. A lot of people have a little work space next/ in there house and thet includes doctors it's not the same as doing it in your kitchen

Also, um...DCS (Department of Child Services) doesn't mind her 11 year old tattooing/essentially performing a surgical procedure on a person without having any education or Red Cross certification? As a mother and tattoo enthusiast myself...I don't think she is providing a safe environment for her child or her clients. SMH! No, she needs to find a new career path, and she needs to take some parenting classes too! No place tattooing in my opinion. Second chances are for people that display remorse. She has shown none.😤😡🤬

Idk the law but even if the kid was somehow certified trained followed all safety rules was a formidable artist etc… I don’t think it is legal to make a child work especially in your place and without surveillance / letting the gestion of a shop to them while you are gone. And if it’s legal it has to be declared and controlled in some ways ? Even in the us there must be laws about child labor especially when the child is in fact not making money for themselves but in the place of their parents that were too occupied or bored to properly do their job or something like that.

Thank you for speaking out about autism speaks. My sister is autistic and my mother had her go through an autism speaks styled program. It was very traumatic for her because of their approach. Thank you for calling out this bs and handling it so well. It's very important information.

I’m autistic myself and my parents somewhat support them and I had to tell them the details on why they are so horrible. Thankfully I never went through one of their programs.

I literally asked an artist if I could use their art as a reference for the concept I wanted. Like “hey I really like this concept you drew, would it be okay if I took this to my tattoo artist as a reference for a tattoo?” and they said yes! I wouldn’t have gotten it otherwise, but it was so easy to just ask! I even showed my artist proof of the artist’s consent because I didn’t wanna come off as like a thief or something omg. And yes, I showed the original artist and they were so excited that someone got something inspired by their work tattooed on them. But it’s. okay if an artist says no, too! As an artist myself, I would be so uncomfortable with someone using my work without permission.

It's so easy to ask! I have a tattoo that is heavily inspired by art I found online, and I did the same thing you did. I DMd the artist and said I really liked it and asked if they'd be ok with me getting it tattooed. Had they said no I wouldn't have gotten the tattoo, plain and simple. But they said yes, so I took the photo to my artist and got the tattoo, it looks great and I love it, I sent the artist a photo and they loved it too. It's really easy to be nice and just ask the original artist if it's ok. And that it's also ok for them to say "no, I'm not comfortable with that"!

I've had someone "jokingly" admit if they really wanted my artwork on them they would do it anyway. And as the artist I told them it would make me highly uncomfortable if they got pieces especially ones I liked and would possibly turn into tattoos for myself that I'd never ever want to match with someone like that at least.....person had to be talked down from using my stuff even though I expressed I told them no 😅 Asking is so easy and idk why some people get mad when. Another note about the puzzle piece debacle: it also represents a very skewed image of autism, as it used to have the silhouette of a little boy inside. It pretty much only included the stereotype of “little boy, nonverbal, likes trains a bit too much, violent outbursts”, which actually lead to a huge chunk of autistic women like me to be completely overlooked, undiagnosed, and yelled at for asking for help when we really needed it because we could hide it really well. I spent most of high school dreaming of unaliving myself bc I was so different and didn’t make sense as a human being. Finally I was diagnosed with autism at 20, and now knowing that, I make sense. It makes sense that I want to crawl out of my skin after work/class bc of overstimulation. It makes sense that I can predict what will happen in a show/movie with alarming detail but I can’t for the life of me “read between the lines” when someone is communicating. It makes sense that my teachers have always commented on my abilities rising above the class average yet expressing concern for my social skills. It finally made sense why I felt like I was putting on an act all week to pretend to be normal, just to collapse by Friday and want to crawl in a hole and not talk to anyone for the weekend bc i just didn’t have the energy to act normal any more. It felt like the last piece of a puzzle clicking into place, making me a complete person, a person worthy of love and respect. It hurt so bad to find out organizations like AutismSpeaks want to use eugenics to eliminate autism, which is absolutely bonkers considering some of the greatest minds, greatest inventors, greatest contributors to society have been autistic or retroactively diagnosed as such. But no, they don’t have the capacity to think about the really neat aspects of the autistic brain and the advantages it has over the neurotypical brain, all they see is how “inconvenient” it is for a child to have a meltdown in public because the lights in the grocery store going BZZZZT and the squeaking wheels and constant beeping gives them a sensory overload. Even with all the cool aspects of autism, I’m still perfectly comfortable recognizing it as a disability, but mostly because the world was not built with autism in mind. Sometimes it’s something as simple as switching to natural light as opposed to fluorescent lighting that can level the playing field, and they think we’re so massively inconvenient that we shouldn’t have existed in the first place?? Gross. Just gross.

If you’re up for it, look up the Autism Speaks commercial called “I Am Autism”. It’ll show you AS’s view of Autism and why they’re so reviled in the neurodivergent community. Imagine being an autistic kid (or adult) when that ad was on tv all the time.

I’m a french tattoo artist and during our sanitary licence medical professionnal actually say that its better to use high chemicals product ( virucidal/ anti-bacterial / antifungal ) on your bed rather than clean film because its not medicaly made but we can use examination sheets :) but i’m pretty sure for her its just a case of laziness !

First off- the deep red hair is stunning with your coloring! Also, as an American yes our healthcare is VERY expensive, and we are dependent on our employers to get health insurance. Because of this I know lots of people (including myself) who have made lifestyle changes to avoid illness, pregnancy, and injury. It’s much cheaper to get a well done professional tattoo than it is to stay in a hospital and be treated for sepsis, I promise.

Also- I live in a better funded “blue state”, Texas is literally the Wild West. They have some nice giant hospitals, but everything is way far apart and the state infrastructure is poorly funded. Even where I am I have seen people turn down treatment for gunshot wounds and broken bones here because of the price.

I got sterilized to avoid pregnancy. I mean we do have special Medicaid for pregnant people and children, but sometimes if you make "too much" they'll take away your insurance. I have a coworker who's going thru this and she didn't qualify for a certain insurance to pay for medication bc she makes "too much". And we work fast food. It's not even liveable income lol. I have to live with family because there's no way I can afford an apartment let alone medical treatment. @@whitalleys5893I live in Texas and this is very true. I live in a city the size of Pittsburg, yet to get many surgeries or treatments, people here have to go to Houston, San Antonio or Austin. That’s a 3-4 hour drive away. When I had surgery for endometriosis, a fairly simple surgery, I had to go to San Antonio. Soon I’ll have to have spine surgery and I’ll need to go to either San Antonio or Austin for that. For my hysterectomy I could only go to one hospital locally because the other 3 hospitals are Catholic-owned and won’t do that surgery unless you’re dying. When my dad retired, he was living near Fort Worth, but he decided to move simply because the healthcare options for what he needed sucked in DFW. People literally do move just because of the healthcare or lack thereof. And that’s with it still being exorbitantly expensive everywhere.

OMG that fuzzy sweater dragging across fresh tattoos... the thought makes me wanna hurl! SO so unsanitary! Its easy enough to do things the right way, but apparently it's not easy enough for her to admit she is wrong. There are so many other good artists and good shops in the Fort Worth area, I can't imagine why anyone would get tattooed by her.

Normally, I would agree with you on people deserving a second chance, but Ariel's been doing this for OVER A DECADE? Yeah, no. Her chances have come and gone. She needs to be shut down for good. Lovely video, btw, I'm always really grateful to see how polite and respectful you are about people and certain subjects.

So I’m a diabetic and have to do very extensive research into any and all shops that I go to. That being said, the shop I went to who did my biggest tattoo wrapped everything, opened newly wrapped supplies in front of me, and even did research on type 1 diabetes before I came in. He had never tattooed a diabetic before, but he made sure to walk me through the supplies and his cleaning process. I have never had an issue with my tattoo I got from him, and he was incredible. (Granted this was in Nashville, but STILL) So I know a ton about how things are supposed to be done. (Not an expert but I know more than the average person). So I can point out that she’s doing so many things wrong. But also, the health department most times can be paid off, or they’ll stand there while you fix things and watch you fix them, then give you a higher score.

I think you said it in your last video but she's taking advantage of "poor" people. She knows she can't charge the going rate because her work is not good enough.

as someone with autism i had absolutely no idea about the issues with the puzzle piece so thank you for putting that part and going into depth about how harmful it is, i’ve learned a new thing today haha

As someone from the DFW area in TX, I am so happy that I had never actually heard of Ariel until your videos. I'm sure I might have come across her while searching for shops but her work is sooooo bad that I would have dismissed her without even learning her name. To answer your question about what's going on in Texas... well lmao... our government is too busy worrying about women's bodily autonomy and drag performances than actual things that are harming people in this state so lmao. Anyway, she probably really is bribing the local health inspector and that's why she's never getting held accountable for the shit she is pulling, and I really really hope someday soon she gets a reality check because this is genuinely so terrifying.

It means so much to me as an autistic viewer that you're speaking up about the problematic symbolism behind the puzzle piece.💜💜

What gets me is that she's proud of never apprenticing and proud of how much she rushes tattoos. Which funnily enough she uploaded a tiktok today claiming she doesn't rush, she just wants her clients not to "have to sit for hours while someone tweaks on their arm and take multiple smoke breaks" she's delusional

Call me crazy but if something is going to be on my body for the rest of my life, I'd rather someone take their time so it's done properly. I've sat through eight hour sessions with gratitude.

small thing I can't help but notice, but she seemed pretty good at wearing gloves and using cling film when tattooing *herself* in that montage of all the tattoos she did on herself...

So thankful my tattoo artist observed all health protocols- everything wrapped, washing hands and putting on fresh gloves after breaks, and her apprentice commented on changing gloves because they touched the trash can. Would rather go to a place like this any day than infection city.

This. Across multiple artists, they've all had industrial size rolls of cling wrap. It's something that they bulk buy as they know they go through it.

Even if she used a WHOLE roll of click wrap for EVERY single tattoo it would only be a few dollars added to the overall cost... thanks for your videos!

I just think that second chances are for people who want and try to change. You can give all the guidance and help to a person, but if they don't want to recognize their wrongs and grow from it, they are not entitled to people giving them another chance. Also, at least to me, all the reasonable doubt I could have on Ariel got out the window the second she left her UNDER AGE DAUGHTER ALONE IN AN ADULT ESTABLISHMENT PERFORMING ARTISTIC WOUNDING WITH A COMPLETE STRANGER

Honestly this video is so helpful for people to see. I've never gotten a tattoo (i grew up in a very Anti-Tattoo family) so I wouldn't have known any of this information, but I am thinking about getting a tattoo in the near future. So to be able to know what is correct or not or knowing that what Ariel is doing is harmful is really helpful. You have now given me the knowledge to be able to walk into a tattoo parlor and know when basic hygiene isn't being followed, so thank you.

I’m on the Autism spectrum, and have a puzzle piece tattoo to represent it. I got it prior to hearing about the issues with Autism Speaks and the negative connection as a symbol. For myself I don’t mind the puzzle piece being used because for MYSELF my diagnosis helped to explain so much, and things fit into place (like a puzzle piece) so I hold no resentment for it as a symbol; however I can completely understand why others within the community do have an issue nowadays, and would never hold that against them. However, Ariel’s reactions to completely disregard those who were commenting that it was offensive (from the sounds of it about 99%) Sometimes there can be misunderstandings, but blatantly ignoring and disregarding information being provided is not on.

I absolutely can't stand her. That wouldn't fly in my state with the kid. You look amazing. The more I see the red, the more I LOVE it ♡

There should be like a guild of tattoo artists, you only get to tattoo if the guild approves. There are just waaay too many dipsh*ts out there who got a machine from wish and "apprenticed" by watching two youtube videos before going hogwild on their kitchen table.

Canadian here! In my tattoo experience chairs aren't wrapped but they are sanitized before someone gets in the chair and after they get out of it. I'm not defending Ariel because fuk her, I just wanted to chime in about the chairs. My artist is extremely sanitary and does so without wrapping the chairs. Hope this was informative 🤙

Same. I've had unwrapped, medical grade wrap, cling wrap, and a garbage bag, all licensed shops in Canada 😅.

Lauren, thanks so much for being the regular cosy end to my day. Watching you I've learnt so much about the tattoo process. So much so, that I recently went out and got my first tattoo. I wasn't aware of the offensive context behind the puzzle piece symbol, thank you for enlightening me on that! Edited for typos!

I can say, I've gotten tattoos from multiple people in Texas and they don't cling wrap any of the chairs, though they do clean it between each person. I've been tattooed at 5 different shops, 6 different artists varying from apprentice to tattooing for 20 years, 14 tattoos. Never an issue.

I live in Canada and have never been to a shop where they cling film the chair.. the shop I get most of my work done is wonderful and play by the rules and they don’t wrap any of their chairs, but they do cling wrap the arm rest. They do sanitize everything between clients though.

It's normal not to cling wrap big pieces of tattoo furniture. In my state they only cling wrap arm rests and other small pieces of tattoo furniture, as well. They'll sometimes put wraps down on the bed if they think it will be a messy tattoo but it's not a requirement. I've been getting tattooed for 11 years in multiple states, as well.

In Indiana, they only cling film the arm rests, too. My artist goes above and beyond with cleaning and hygiene too.

Yeah, I had a look and it seems Ariel was right on that, at least. There's nothing in the licensing aw about it. So as long as she cleans thoroughly in between thatxs up to her, I uess. Though the sleeve dragging across fresh tattoos and that she told peoplemthey could use Dawn dish soap to clean their fresh tattoos... leads me to question whether she can be trusted to be cleaning properly.

Same. Some shops use cling wrap but others don't. All my tattoos are perfectly fine and fully healed without issues.

Somehow I feel like Ariel has yet to convince you of her skill and dedication to basic tattoo hygiene. 🤔 I was sure things would escalate with this video and you didn't disappoint! 😂 Thank you for crawling through all that awful material to bring us another video!

As someone that has been getting tattooed since 1987 and worked in the industry for over 28 years, cross-contamination prevention has evolved greatly. Many of the regulations written for Tattooing and PIercing are outdated or the absolute bare minimum when it comes to public safety. As artists have become more educated uses of barriers, multiple glove changes, how we go about setting up, processing equipment and contaminated items, and sterilization have become standards. However, if you have someone that simply doesn't see the point of continuing their education, or researching their art, they tend to do the bare minimum to obtain a license and see no point in wasting money on making their studio, their clients, and themselves safer. The reality is that an artist is going to be the one that is going to have the most contact with these contaminated items and is most likely to be infected. The worst-case scenario is that they contract hepatitis B or C. Which could put them, their family, their friends, their clients, and everyone they come in contact with at risk. Consider that Hep B & C can live outside of the body for at least 7 days. Then consider the number of times those in the studio could come in contact with that contaminated surface. Now think about the 11-year-old and the fact that they have more than likely been in that studio their whole life and what they have come in contact with. This is why you shouldn't trust your health to unclean artists because they don't even value their own health.

I have a few tattoos that are drawings I found on the internet-that I reached out to the artist and offered to pay for use of the design. Then I take it to a tattoo artist who I also pay to put the work on me. Then I send the picture to the artist so they can see the final product.

Aside from the fact that Ariel obviously knows by now that the puzzle piece is offensive yet still continues to tattoo it, a disturbing part for me is that whenever someone requests a tattoo representing autism she automatically thinks of the puzzle piece. There is other imagery she could use, but she can't separate the word autism from the puzzle piece symbol. Also, I firmly believe that once she realized it offended people, she decided to keep tattooing it because it would get her the views; making it clear that not only does she not care about the autistic community, but she also doesn't care about the client she is branding with what is essentially a hate symbol. The only thing she cares about is that people are talking about her and watching her videos. I have a strong feeling this is why she does all the problematic things she does. As soon as she hears what not to do, she knows doing it will get her the attention she craves.

I have watched Tabatha taking over salons and guiding some pretty awful stylists sometimes. If she can get through to them, if they actually care and put in the work, they can become quite successful. So would a mentor help? Possibly. But it depends entirely on her attitude, accountability and willingness to learn. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Aw, this could be a sweet TV show or YT series if well-done (like the early Kitchen Nightmares episodes that were set in the UK- even though i don't enjoy watching Gordon Ramsey on TV, that was a wholesome show.) I'd definitely watch Tattoo Shop Rescue with Lauren as a co-host. xD

Wow I just watched part 1 yesterday! (catching up on previous week's videos form you). Edit: Maybe the 'advertisement' she is referring to is actually her TikTok videos. More people going to her account to watch her videos = more engagement = more money from it. Probably not what she meant, but it is something to think about. (This is why after watching your part 1 I didn't go to her TikTok).

This is why I draw my own tattoos to give to my tattoo artist makes me appreciate each piece knowing no else has it I'll be upset if someone stole my work...in the past I have reached out to other artists who's work I wanted tatted but ended up not getting it done because they never reached back to me with a yes or no answer

honestly, I think it's really interesting to hear all of the tattoo rules and how she's breaking them because at least now i know what to look out for at my next appointment! also I like it when ding dongs get called out so definitely not beating a dead horse!

I love how I saw a few days before your first video about her one of her terrible glittet tattoo TUTORIALS!!! And even then thought that it was... not good.

I had no clue about the puzzle piece being problematic. Good to know now so ty! I always thought of it as the puzzle piece being just like the rest of us "pieces" of the puzzle.

She also put a puzzle piece, specifically the autism Speaks in a piece with Gus Gus, in a piece 1-3 months-ish ago (I believe it was anyway). It's absolutely a nightmare.

I love Lauren for showing us tattoo artists like this. The fact that she goes deeply into the artist and their work so that we can see what crazy shit some artist do. This Ariel girl is fucking crazy😵

My favorite tattoo place used to have a fun Halloween $30 special. They had about a dozen different small cute designs..a cactus 🌵, a 🐢 turtle, a peace sign, things like that. You could choose where you wanted it but you had to reach into a brown paper bag and pull out a random one. That was the tattoo you got for your $30 and all of the artists are great so it didn't really matter who did it. The college students loved it!!!!
