Hi Harold. You are not alone in wondering whether to buy new or used. I am sure most of us have a box full of items we bought to repair and ended up getting new ones. Keep on keeping on. regards from the UK

I always get bit when I deviate from tried and true rules. What I do not know is why I do that? Thanks for stopping by.
I got a good laugh out of the "ice water" remark. Nice start to the day. Thanks Harold.

Changed circumstances cause a change in priorities. =(;-) Thanks for stopping by.
Hello Harold, I have to agree with your rule. In most cases unless you can see, hear, and feel a piece of machinery it is a bad idea to buy sight unseen. Having said that I will break it if the selling price is such that I can throw the part away with no remorse. E-bay is good for a lot of things but buying used not so good. Depending on reasonable parts for rebuilding can be a large crap shoot too. As you say you and those of us viewers are learning a lot. Just might end up seeing a tap-o-matic being machined from scratch!! Lol. Give Miss Daisy a scratch for me. Take care. Doug

That's quite a complex device... a definite challenge! Nothing worse than a BB with no obvious home!-- oh, and another one - and even more. That planetary outer looks like it could go on either way.

I think the gearless part has to go down so that when you pull up on the tapmatic the gears disengage and lets it turn the other way. Thanks for stopping by.
That's because your snap ring plies are MIUSA. - It's a spare BB incase you need it. LOL - Grabbed the wrong gear on my NP203 transfer case and dumped 120 some needle bearings in the casing. lol Found every one of them. - Good luck on getting someone that speaks English. - Like the hat. I've been a life member since '74. - Hope you got that thing together.

Greetings from Bonnie Scotland Harold. This was a very interesting and informative video young man and well worth doing, I am looking forward to the next part. The Chester story was a killer😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Thanks for sharing and take care. Joe.

I work in a scrap yard in the Uk. Lost count of how many seemingly impossible repairs I've had to figure out over the last 40 years to keep our machines working. There is always a way to fix anything so long as you're willing to laugh at your own mistakes along the way and not give up. :-)
Harold, Your grinder-contraption may benefit from a cupwheel, maybe a green one, if you want to grind carbides. That said, if you use a regular wheel cup or cylindrical , you need to make a guard. If you don't you risk having shards of grinding wheel burying themselves in your noggin ! And that may not be the best thing.... Paddy

I would hate having foreign objects embedded in my noggin for sure. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Howard, You just bought yourself a project... lol When counting balls, one is intriguing, two is perfect and reassuring, three or more you really start wondering..... !!!! ;) Got 3 or 4 taping heads and I'm not anxious to play in them. Cheers, Pierre

If you'd got the shars, we would all miss out on this adventure. I went through this with my ebay bargain versatapper brand, but finally got it working. Endeavor to persevere.

Well, my heart goes out to you, I suffer from a similar affliction (but don't have a rule against buying used, only a newly-acquired rule against forking out a lot of money) and I often find myself in the same position so I don't have any practical advice, much less any worthwhile advice. Maybe you could get AvE to send a PDF like his VICE newsletter on how to dismember that bad puppy. I sure am glad that you're too stubborn to give up on this puppy; it's encouraging to see difficult challenges overcome with intelligence, patience, and skill.

Soooo....two choices for your $320...#1...Repair a good USA made tool OR buy a Chinese clone probably made with steel from old tin cans. I think you made the right choice...PLUS you had the fun and the pride of repairing it. Pretty cool.

The repair is still underway. The possibility of many mistakes to come still exists. When the new part arrives we will see what happens. Thanks for stopping by.
Don't feel bad Harold. 95% of the tools I own were used when I got them. In the long run, I've saved a lot of money!

PS: Have you thought about adapting one of Shars CBN wheels to your grinder? I have one of those on my 8" bench grinder and I can tell you you won't wear it out any time soon. Goes through carbide like shite through a Xmas goose! Doug

We've got two at work. Best thing since sliced bread. Those collets are out of control expensive. The shank has been cut off because they are used a lot on Bridgports which requires clearence for the draw bar.

I agree keep on keepin on youll getter dun and have a tool to be proud of including knowing how its put together.I have a similar rule but opposite. A guy gets tired of smashing chinesesium "tools" to bits and still have to buy a proper tool after the fact....

take it apart, stuff falls out, committed to stripping it down, cant figure out how it works or comes apart, wish i hadnt started the job....part one of two? is that over optimistic? maybe that race is broken, on purpose like they do inside some chucks, as it wouldbt be possible to get it together otherwise?

Fix for your grinder project ! Use a 4" diamond blade from a electric tile cutter www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4inch-Grinding-Diamond-Coated-Rotary-Glass-Tile-Grind-Round-Wheel-Disc-/141602047833?hash=item20f823c759:g:9FYAAOSwc3ZUoj0W.

Well often as is means not as it was when it was new. So anywhere from somewhat less than perfect, all the way down to road kill. With the tail end of the spectrum being more common than I like it to be.

True these things do tend to the bottom of the pile.
"more like it's broken"?? Here we say " no shit Sherlock" That ring goes milled-away-teeth down. There is no sense in the reverse... when it is in the up position it does not engage, if you put it the other way around, there is no way it can disengage .... (and there would have been no sense in milling away part of the teeth) ROFL Paddy
