Great setup. Inspiring. I have a tapmatic off eBay. I got in a bidding war on a bus on the way home from classes once because I was having a bad day and just HAD to win! lol. Got a great deal on an awesome tapmatic. Forward many years later and I have a lathe and a mill. Both not great at all, but I have em. Still might not have the clearance for using my tapmatic though.. So I may need a cheap press like you're using. I made a titanium road bike frame without having to tap anything. Now I am making a cars intake and have many metric and NPT threads to make. Glad you showed Molly-Dee.. other people reference it and it leaves you guessing who makes it, how to spell it, and recognize it at a store. I also have that Ikea light with a bad switch that is waiting to get repurposed as a machine light like you did. Great detail! I like all the drill presses for their reliable separate use cases. Someday with home ownership I'd like to setup similar dedicated utility permanence. Haven't seen anyone do pipe taps with Ti yet. Also makes me wonder if I'd be better off switching to straight thread fittings with O-Rings rather than pipe fittings.

Thread forming taps have a larger drill size than a cutting tap, first off. that may have been the breakage problem. Look up forming tap sizes on a chart.Thread form taps by hand is not an easy task either.I've never seen anyone tap a form tap by hand ever in my 50 years as a toolmaker. With the right drill size and the drill press set-up, it should work well. Look up a company called "Productivity" in Plymouth, MN. They have a red tapping fluid that works wonderful. About 15.00 dollars a bottle. One drop per hole. Can;t remember the name, but it;s red in color. If you don't see it, ask someone for help. This is by far the absolute best tapping fluid on the market. Hop this advise helps. I taught students at a technical college as well. Thanks for your time.

Thank you. I do know and use the correct size drill for forming and cutting taps. And I'm sure in a machining environment no one taps by hand but a lot of starting knife makers tap by hand. Hell, I know guys that get $2k+ for their knives and still tap by hand. Just a different culture. I've been using this set up for years and no issues. I even have a cnc now and still prefer to tap this way. But thanks for the comment!!

Never liked those Tapmatic heads. They were always too Jerky and "Snappy" when they engage and disengage. Seems like that contributes to tap breakage. Check out Ettco, they work silky smooth with nice controlled clutch engagement.
