The Easiest Way to Tap Steel Parts - Tapmatic VS 1" Steel Plate
In this video I show you how using a Tapping head will change the way you tap parts forever. Using this Tapmatic 90X tapping head I am able to tap 1" steel plate in about 25 seconds per hole!
Tapping heads like this are very expensive to buy brand new, but readily available on the used market like on eBay. I paid under $200 for this Tapmatic 90X on eBay.

Hello Chris The torch arrived yesterday. Thanks again. My grandson is visiting his mother for a few weeks so there will be a little of a delay in getting a photo of him and his new torch. I know he will be thrilled.

I had seen those but never saw one work. Seeing that it reverses with up pressure explains the benefit. I just tapped 16 M6 holes with a low clutch setting on battery drill yesterday. Thanks for sharing!
Great video! Thank you for making it. I’ve been looking at the Tapmatics and others like them. Also, just made my first auction purchase. Thanks at least in part to you. Got a three head Clausing drill center for $325! Course it was $1100 to ship it to my house, but still. It weighs 5000 pounds. It’s a level of quality I never thought I could afford. Had this very conversation with Matt at Precision Matthews yesterday. Have a PM-1054 on order (single phase) and then saw videos showing this crazy hit the reverse button just in time to tap thing. "Crap...need 3-phase." Matt says - Google Tapmatic. Great video. Super helpful to see this thing in action. Best of luck on the startup Chris. Right there with you.

Where I work we have 3 of these in various sizes for the drill presses, plus one attached to a hand drill (up to 1/2"-13NC). That one can play havoc on your wrists if you're not careful. But it makes it easier for tapping large items like 6" square tube with 1/4" wall thickness that is 15' long.
The good feels when you use your tools for a paying job :) Great work brotha
nice demo!!! doing that by hand would suck!! Gun tap would be great for this job -- but not if you're only making 8 of them. Very cool job and great work at getting your customers to pay for your tool addiction -- that's the best part :)

Great video thanks! Do you know if the arbors on these all thread into the tapping head? If you buy one on ebay with an MT4 for example but want to put in a straight shank arbor can you just thread the old one out and put a new one in? TIA

Do you have any idea if that will work on my mag drill. I have a Dewalt mag drill. Not sure the chuck attachment is same???
Nice video. Now have you thought about using the tapmatic with a die? What I am saying is put the rod into the tapmatic and mount the die on the vice on your drill press. I don't own one so I'm not sure how the rod would hold in the tapmatic. You didn't show that part but it seems like it might work. What I need is aluminum rod 3/8th with some threads on one end.
Hello. I have two tapmatics (50x and a 30 TC/DC). I have just acquired them. My question is what collets (rubber) do I need to cover the range of the 50x and what collets do I need to cover the range of the 30 TC/DC? I see you can purchase the collets but they are reasonably expensive and I don't want to buy any more than necessary. Regards.

Will the Tap-matic work horizontally? Could you set it up in the lathe tailstock?

Matt Berg I don’t think so, it relies on the spindle moving to operate, I think if the spindle was locked in a chuck it would bind up, but maybe worth a try

It was hard enough knowing how much you can do with a Bridgeport,( when you don't have one)...but NOW I really am envious. That thing will spoil ya!

You can run a tapping head on a drill press too though. often quicker as well!

I use mine on the drill press too, but this side tap throws a LOT of torque so i feel safe in my bridgeport

By the time it takes to set up the Tapmatic, the holes could have easily been tapped while still on the lathe. No changing set ups. Easy peasey.

In my experience, and with my workflow this was the fastest and safest way to do it. Ive never had good luck power tapping in the lathe, and setting up to cut internal threads would have taken too long.

If you have the tooling, it could be quick. You're assuming he has the proper threading tool with a long enough reach. I would assume you could use the tapmatic on the lathe too, but wouldnt be much faster

Ever tried a spiral point tap? They push the chip forward through the hole, so they don't get stuck in the flutes....I did some 3/8 holes in thick stainless blocks, just held in a drill chuck (in the mill) and it cut like butter....reversed no problem....I agree that power tapping in a lathe is a huge pain, using the mill is the right call....
No gloves on the lathe. Work safe and keep all your parts.
That's a $4000 tapping head......
