I had a job interview yesterday for a machinist position running a milling machine for a company. I'm a CNC lathe guy and I barely have any experience running a milling machine so the guy interviewing me was a little apprehensive about hiring me. At one point, he asked me what my hobbies were and I said "Tinkering with guns, fishing, antique tools, and trying to learn manual machining." I told him that I bought an older South Bend lathe and I was trying to teach myself how to use it. Then, I said "Do you know Tubalcain.......Mr. Pete from KZread?" He enthusiastically replied "OH YEAH!" and then I proceeded to tell him that I bought Mr. Pete's video series on how to run a South Bend lathe. Anyway, I got the job and Mr. Pete is famous!

Thank you very much for that wonderful testimony. I am so glad you got the job
Mr. Pete, I was working in a hydraulic shop as Foreman when they got a government contract to supply metric to SAE fitting conversion kits for the Air Force. One of the fittings was to have a jet installed inside . There were none available anywhere. We stocked the fitting but it had a hole bored right through. Well I came up with the idea to tap inside the fitting, then install a grub screw and bore the proper size hole in the grub screw to make it a jet. Well the company owned a tapping head so I made a deal to get one dollar per unit to do the work at my house and they supply all parts including drill bits, taps and give me the tapping head to boot! I did the work and made a few bucks and the tapping head is different from the one you have. It has an arm that rests against the column of the drill press and has a number two taper to mount it to the drill press. I have never used it since that one job.

Thank you, that was an interesting story
Never give it much thought how the tapping head works, glad you showed it now it’s fully understandable, great video Lyle.
Fascinating. I never get tired of the Cutaway videos
Always love these cutaway videos, and it wouldn't be the same without the amusing commentary too!, a good start to my day thanks!

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure. Thanks for another great video Mr P.
I ended up with a few of these and had to pull one apart to see how it worked. Very clever piece of equipment. I'm now tempted to make my own cut-away.
Hey Mr Pete your cutaways are getting better each time you do one we really enjoy watching thanks again

Nice! You've given me the incentive to do the same on a big truck differential. The shop kiddos will love playing with It.
When I began my maintenance career in the machine shop there may have been 20 Tap-Matic tapping heads in service. I don't recall any Procurnier heads. Maintenance did all machine maintenance, but machine shop did all tooling maintenance. I never had any occasion to service our tapping heads. I remember the first CNC mill we purchased that was equipped with "synchronous tapping". That was pretty fancy. We no longer required the long length tooling capacity to hold the tapping heads. Standard tooling length held rigid tapping. Synchronous tapping rapidly became shop wide. Secondary operation drill press work was soon pretty much obsolete as well. Tapping heads were discarded about as fast as Farmall 806 mounting steps were discarded as loader frames became popular.

Thank you. I think the tapping head is pretty obsolete, and so am I. You will notice no one is watching this video
Those cut away's were just enough to see the full operation ---- Very interesting indeed ---- Thanks

Awsome video looks very interesting mechanism, must have taken some time to decide where to put the cut outs and how to hold it to cut them out. Going to watch part 2 now.
Good video. Always fascinated by a cutaway piece what ever it is. Have done some myself. Thanks .
Good morning Mr. Pete. Drinking Coffee and having my morning dose of shop.
Gotta love the cut aways regardless of what they are. I think if I was in a shop class and you handed this around it would explain the device perfectly to the student,

Thank you Mr Peterson!
If you have a lot of holes to tap a tapping head is wonderful. I have a tapmatic and it covers a wide range of sizes. Thanks for another interesting video.

Entertaining as always Mr Pete.
Nice video, very well done. Thanks for what you do.
Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed.
Great video, thank you Mr Pete!
you could cut half depth into the ring gears to give a better view of the planetary motion, you only need a small working portion of that ring gear engaging with the planetary gears, as its not going to be taking the normal stress of tapping operations
That’s really beautiful ! 🙏🏻🙋♀️
Cool! Mr. Pete is doing another cut out!
Thanks for the video.
Good morning I'm glad to see you and your sharing
Never actually taken one apart, also have a No1, works like a charm. This is doubly useful, because i think i should open it to give it a service. :)
Thanks Lyle. I made a cut away of an Elgin 18 size watch so I could see the operation mechanism. I was a watch and clock maker for many years. My mentor spent 10 years teaching me.. He went to the Elgin watchmakers College. Made me do everything he. Had to do. Danny

Nice job. This is a difficult one with the planetary system buried so deep in the base and the drive shell covering the ring gear and clutch. It's like trying to see inside a jet turbine and watch all the workings interacting.
Thank you for a great show,,,,,,!,,,,,,,
Well I'm the first one to comment :) I love all of your videos and will continue watching them. I learn so much everytime and love the auction ones the most. Hope we see more engine build videos

I love cutaways I remember the first one I saw I was 11 when I bought my first car 67 mecury comet 2door 289 V8 and it needed a transmission rebuilt so I went to tranco n got a kit they had a GM th350 hydromatic cutaway she was amazing
Hey! I have one of these, or something very similar, came with a "Quadrille" 4 chuck running tool changer for a 50's era Delta-Rockwell drill press. Look one of those up, Super cool design and I have had trouble getting mine put back together correctly. After a while the clamp that tightens onto the mandrel slides down and I can no longer change between tools. Getting it apart is like a puzzle or a lock or something, very cool tool nonetheless.
The cutaways really reveal how things work. Hope to see an auto transmission cutaway some day. Maybe a charitable person can donate a cutaway auto transmission. So Mr Pete can have more free time to go junking, flea markets, and auctions.

16:23. The tapping head bears the mark "Brevete S.G.D.G.". This was the old patent statute used in France up to about 1970. As I recall, there was no government examination of the invention with regard to novelty, utility, etc. Instead, the inventor's statements about the invention were merely accepted. It was apparently only a registration system. My first job down at the plant (after high school but before the university) was to run a Procunier head threading holes in pieces of steel strap, endlessly...endlessly...the only relief was provided by the walk to the tool crib to get a new (sharp) tap... Thanks for the memory.
@mrpete222

I tapped 1 million holes in electric fishing motors. The only relief was going to the bathroom

@@mrpete222 Excessive bathroom breaks could resulting a talking-to from the foreman. A broken tap was a more palatable excuse.
We have one with a 2mt taper, found at scrapyard, but it had been laying in bucketof water, took forever find new clutch for it, still have to remake one of planetary bolts that broke off! Its a model number 13003, also need try eject old broken tap out of collet, makes us sad to see those parts and not able to buy them😟
Lyle, thanks so much !!! Cliff

Hi Mr. Pete. I find planetary gears fascinating too. In fact, I built an Allison transmission that has 3 sets of planetary gears systems out of Lego’s. It has 6 speeds forward and 1 reverse plus neutral. You can see it on my channel. Nice job on the cut-away.

You can get some led lights to put inside to illuminate it. You can run insert a couple of AA batteries to power it.

Yes
You could mill away half the height of the ring gear teeth so that the planet and sun gears can be seen.
How about making one in perspex.....:-)
This is a tool I've always seen laying around the many shops I've worked in, that never got used. They are really only useful if you have a large quantity of holes all needing tapped with the same size tap. I always put the tap right in the drill chuck. Tapped thousands of holes in Die Sets on the Radial drill press, most of them were all different sizes and there is no good way to trap the anti-rotation arm of the head on a radial drill press. Just my 2 cents worth.

They are strictly for repetitive production work
Mr Pete, is there a specific rpm we should run this unit at?

Yes, lower speeds for tapping. I do not know the exact speed off hand. Check a handbook
Here is a cutaway you may find interesting. Keep in mind, the warranty on the 2023 Corvette is 5 years or 60,000 miles and the first service is complimentary. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kamow5iLh9reZ9Y.html
