I had a job interview yesterday for a machinist position running a milling machine for a company. I'm a CNC lathe guy and I barely have any experience running a milling machine so the guy interviewing me was a little apprehensive about hiring me. At one point, he asked me what my hobbies were and I said "Tinkering with guns, fishing, antique tools, and trying to learn manual machining." I told him that I bought an older South Bend lathe and I was trying to teach myself how to use it. Then, I said "Do you know Tubalcain.......Mr. Pete from KZread?" He enthusiastically replied "OH YEAH!" and then I proceeded to tell him that I bought Mr. Pete's video series on how to run a South Bend lathe. Anyway, I got the job and Mr. Pete is famous!

Mr. Pete, I was working in a hydraulic shop as Foreman when they got a government contract to supply metric to SAE fitting conversion kits for the Air Force. One of the fittings was to have a jet installed inside . There were none available anywhere. We stocked the fitting but it had a hole bored right through. Well I came up with the idea to tap inside the fitting, then install a grub screw and bore the proper size hole in the grub screw to make it a jet. Well the company owned a tapping head so I made a deal to get one dollar per unit to do the work at my house and they supply all parts including drill bits, taps and give me the tapping head to boot! I did the work and made a few bucks and the tapping head is different from the one you have. It has an arm that rests against the column of the drill press and has a number two taper to mount it to the drill press. I have never used it since that one job.

When I began my maintenance career in the machine shop there may have been 20 Tap-Matic tapping heads in service. I don't recall any Procurnier heads. Maintenance did all machine maintenance, but machine shop did all tooling maintenance. I never had any occasion to service our tapping heads. I remember the first CNC mill we purchased that was equipped with "synchronous tapping". That was pretty fancy. We no longer required the long length tooling capacity to hold the tapping heads. Standard tooling length held rigid tapping. Synchronous tapping rapidly became shop wide. Secondary operation drill press work was soon pretty much obsolete as well. Tapping heads were discarded about as fast as Farmall 806 mounting steps were discarded as loader frames became popular.

you could cut half depth into the ring gears to give a better view of the planetary motion, you only need a small working portion of that ring gear engaging with the planetary gears, as its not going to be taking the normal stress of tapping operations

Hey! I have one of these, or something very similar, came with a "Quadrille" 4 chuck running tool changer for a 50's era Delta-Rockwell drill press. Look one of those up, Super cool design and I have had trouble getting mine put back together correctly. After a while the clamp that tightens onto the mandrel slides down and I can no longer change between tools. Getting it apart is like a puzzle or a lock or something, very cool tool nonetheless.

16:23. The tapping head bears the mark "Brevete S.G.D.G.". This was the old patent statute used in France up to about 1970. As I recall, there was no government examination of the invention with regard to novelty, utility, etc. Instead, the inventor's statements about the invention were merely accepted. It was apparently only a registration system. My first job down at the plant (after high school but before the university) was to run a Procunier head threading holes in pieces of steel strap, endlessly...endlessly...the only relief was provided by the walk to the tool crib to get a new (sharp) tap... Thanks for the memory.

This is a tool I've always seen laying around the many shops I've worked in, that never got used. They are really only useful if you have a large quantity of holes all needing tapped with the same size tap. I always put the tap right in the drill chuck. Tapped thousands of holes in Die Sets on the Radial drill press, most of them were all different sizes and there is no good way to trap the anti-rotation arm of the head on a radial drill press. Just my 2 cents worth.
