T90 HE vs M1 ABRAMS | OVERPRESSURE SIMULATION | 125mm High Explosive Armour Penetration

Ғылым және технология

Simulating the effects of a 125mm high explosive pressure wave on the Abrams' hull roof and fighting compartment. The model investigates how the blast wave propagates through the tank and determines how lethal it is by measuring the overpressure inside the vehicle.
The 3OF26 HE projectile has over 3kg of RDX and can penetrate around 45mm of steel; in this simulation the projectile detonates above the hull roof, which is often stated to be 1.5" thick (38.1mm) [5]. The shrapnel from the HE round is ignored for simplicity and to purely focus on the pressure effects.
To Note:
The 3OF26 projectile has been simplified, with the filler material being purely RDX instead of a mixture of other materials. This is due to material properties not being available for the complex mixture.
The armour values and geometry of the Abrams is approximated based on whats available publicly, as the true design is classified.
The small regions of pressure which develop around the rigid body, or in some cases where the pressure penetrates the rigid bodies are due to the air elements being on both sides of the rigid body at once -this is because the elements aren't small enough. These larger elements also cause instability in the model which caused it to crash, hence why some of the simulations are cut short. This could not be improved as I had already reached the node limit of the software I was using.
Material properties, armour, and projectile geometries were all taken from literature:
[1] RHA: core.ac.uk/download/pdf/28829...
[2] Air: osf.io/f8awq/download/?versio...
[3] RDX: www.researchgate.net/publicat...
[4] 3OF26: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/125_mm_...
[5] Abrams Armour: aw.my.games/sites/aw.my.com/f...
This real-world overpressure effect has recently been implemented into the video game Warthunder...but not very accurately.
Abaqus FEA was used with a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian model, with Johnson-Cook material properties for steel, ideal gas for air, and JWL for RDX.

On question, in the case of HE round exploding inside the Abrams, isn't the Abrams seperated into two main compartments (driver - gun crew). Did your test simulate that. If no is it enought to protect the gun crew from the HE exploding and killing them.

The problem here isn’t sound, it’s the pressure. A sudden dramatic change of pressure will definitely damage their hearing as long as their headsets aren’t airtight (which I highly doubt). Also, the pressure and vibration could theoretically cause some of the internal elements to break and shrapnel. So they will have a serious concussion, a permanent or long term hearing damage and possibly several broken bones if they’ll be thrown at something hard by the pressure wave.

The internal detonation made me wonder about the overpressure effect of WWII APHE shells detonating inside of a tank after penetration. Simulating both the armor penetration and the following blast effect would probably be tricky, but you could just do what you did in this scenario and lace the projectile inside the vehicle and set it off. Maybe put a hole the diameter of the projectile into the hull just behind it, as that might affect the overpressure ever so slightly by allowing air to escape.

The hatch for the driver is oversized and thicker that what is shown here, go look at the driver's hatch in photos that are available online. The driver's hatch is at least as thick as the Hull around it and sits higher up, so this simulation is not an accurate depiction of what might actually happen in reality.

Not likely to help given that the plate itself was "penetrated" by the overpressure of the shell.

Any chance we could see some HEAT weapons VS Spaced armour? I would really like to see how it behaves, how fast the jet loses coherence and penetration power. I just learnt that it's further than one might think, with some high caliber ATGMs weapon supposedly keeping a majority of penetration power out to 3 meters.
