    Smith was dealing with the wrong people. Distasteful as it would have been he should have been dealing with Nkomo.

    He was talking to Nkomo and even visited Lusaka but after the 1st viscount was shot down the talks were off. That was Nkomos' big mistake. Looking back now I think Nkomo was none too bright.

    @@tightcamper Yes, and lazy by all accounts. he was dumb enough to trust Mugabe. Smith had understandable contempt for him.

    If only Bishop Muzorewa had become president instead of Mugabe. Much sadness could have been avoided.

    Muzorewa was weak. Nkomo was the only viable African candidate to this day. If Smith had included the African Rhodesians into the mould in 1965, then none of this would have happened. And the same can be said about all his predecessors. That's the way it is unfortunately
