IAN SMITH TALKS ABOUT PRESIDENT ROBERT MUGABE

(26 Oct 2000) English/Nat
XFA
With the opposition trying to impeach him and his popularity at an all-time low, President Robert Mugabe has lashed out at Zimbabwe's white minority, threatening genocide trials for all who fought against him in the independence war.
Mugabe told supporters on Wednesday that Ian Smith, the white leader he helped overthrow two decades ago, and all whites who fought against black guerrillas would face trials for war crimes.
Speaking as he arrived for a debate in Oxford on Thursday, Ian Smith responded to these latest threats, saying Mugabe's actions belonged to a man clinging onto the last vestiges of power.
He challenged Mugabe to set up a truth and reconciliation committee, saying that he had nothing to fear.
Arriving at Oxford Union Thursday night, the former white leader of the former British colony of Rhodesia, Ian Smith laughed off President Mugabe's latest threat to put him on the stand.
Mugabe is calling for all whites who fought against black guerrillas to face trials for war crimes.
Mugabe has said the nation's 70,000 whites - less than 1 percent of the population of 13 million - mostly opposed his government and had spurned offers of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Smith rejected Mugabe threat, saying that the blame for the violence lay squarely on Mugabe's shoulders.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well he is the one who should be put on trial for genocide isn't he, Mugabe -- not Smith."
SUPER CAPTION: Ian Smith, former Rhodesian Prime Minister
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well because he killed so many people, massacred them by the thousands, I mean Gurugundi and Matabeleland land, when he massacred 30,000 Matabeleles, I never remember massacring a single person in my life."
SUPERCAPTION: Ian Smith, former Rhodesian Prime Minister
Smith said Mugabe's belligerent style of government had forced him into a corner - one which had made him desperate and dangerous.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"He is in a state of panic, he doesn't know whether he is coming or going, he is like a wounded animal in a corner, dangerous and unpredictable. So I don't know what to say or what to think, it is difficult."
SUPERCAPTION: Ian Smith, former Rhodesian Prime Minister
When asked if he feared a trial, Smith openly challenged Mugabe to carry out his threats, saying he had nothing to fear.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"No I would love it, let's get the truth, when your conscience is clear you have got no problem, have you?"
SUPERCAPTION: Ian Smith, former Rhodesian Prime Minister
However, when questioned if he felt any responsibility for the current state of the economy in Zimbabwe, Smith said the blacks had actually benefitted under British rule.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Certainly not, the black community will tell you they lived better under Smith than under Mugabe, they were brain washed by a communist propaganda machine into believing that things were going to improve, sadly they were taken for a ride."
SUPERCAPTION: Ian Smith, former Rhodesian Prime Minister
He said that the only way to establish the truth of Mugabe's accusations was to follow in the footsteps of South Africa's truth and reconciliation commission.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I've challenged Mugabe to set up a commission of truth and reconciliation similar to the one they had in South Africa. My word I think that would frighten him if he had to face up to that thing, I would welcome it."

Those who before even thinking of an answer link the whole 'question' to 'skin color' are doomed and with them their community that has failed so far to outlaw them. During the Boer wars African black 'aborigines' worked for Kitchener as irregular infantry mostly to spy out the Boers' movements, thus helped him gain victory and enjoyed the respect as equal citizens they fully deserved in what was to be the British colonies in Southern Africa, where European settlers likewise were given their fair share of acceptance and integration by the 'aborigines'. There was nobody who was even dreaming of regarding neighbours as not being Africans. The Boers, however, as we know, kept thinking otherwise, eventually failed and paved the way for 'retributive' black racism that 'united' South Africans are facing today. May what is left of rare and sought-after commodities in South Africa's soil help the minority to retain their common sense in order to form black+white one-rationality rule for their community's sake and prosperity. - Black racism in former Rhodesia was mainly a propaganda stunt pulled by the Communist Mugabe regime (which is still in power under successor Mnangagwa) and more like a poison that was administered to the people.

The freedom fighters came into Rhodesia in very small numbers during the early days, groups of 7, 15, 20 , why didn't he wipe them out early enough and avoid the deaths of so many innocent Rhodesians if Smith was so good. The freedom fighters were into thousands at the height of the war - Smith had failed miserably . You should have stripped him of power for failing to deal with a small problem, he lied to you, alive and even in his grave today you still believe him . Common sense should tell you something is not adding up b4 I even give you more facts . The west was not involved in the fighting from the 1st day , why then did Smith surrender to the west as you said - at what point did the west become relevant . Beown1245 For trying to save your people? By making Rhodesia what it was? The man raised the standard of living to the highest in all of africa. He gave work to people with no education and made their life liveable bu lowering the rent based on their income. He wanted to educate all of you, he even protected the tribes that mugabe so easily massacred for no reason. Look at zimbabwes economy now, look at the hunger. You did this to yourself. God bless your black brothers who understood that we wanted the best for you. But may you all go to hell for ruining your own race and dooming it forever.

I'm no supporter of racist behaviour or ideology, but I've noticed people get irrationally hysterical about 'so-called' racism these days! Here's an interesting question for you! Would you rather be free, prosperous and go to sleep with a belly full of food, with your country led by a 'supposedly' racist leader, ....or be fearful for your life, poverty stricken and starving, under someone who says he speaks for the people but, in fact, is only looking out for himself? Sure Smith had his faults, but he proved to be an able administrator of Zimbabwe. Mugabe on the other hand was clueless, he just wanted power for power's sake, he didn't have any answers, and stubbornly clung on to power killing anyone who challenged him, driving Zimbabwe into the ground. The first question to be asked of any leader is, 'can they do the job'! Smith could, Mugabe couldn't.

You can at least thank Ian Smith from wresting of from Britain, or you would still be a British colony. Ian Smith was not perfect, yet unfortunately bringing changes in from coming out of Britain's grip would need to take time. The time unfortunately was not long enough. Even though Rhodesia had "Independence", much of the " mineral resources were still being controller by the British. Now they will be controller by the "Communists".

He left the second richest country in Africa. 2 US$ to 1 Zim $ Low inflation, single digits. Low unemployment. No starvation. I booming economy. Huge exports. In his own words, he never slaughtered anyone. Mugabe? Stole millions. He left a country which was one of the poorest in the world. 1 US$ to Trillions of Zim $ Inflation that would double the cost of food daily. unemployment in well over half the population. Thousands of people starving to death. The only economy left is the black economy or anything to do with ZanuPF party members and the Chinese puppet masters.
