I agree he was respectful cause he could have grilled this father for avoiding some answers. You can see this father is trying to protect and help his daughter by not recalling some things. He knows what happened you can see that of the body language. It’s hard for parents to testify against their children when you really love them.

The reason I point this out is because kids tend to see the present but not anticipate the future consequences. Kids considering killing to avoid trouble over school (or anything else) need to see that the “win” from getting rid of the parent is a very short win.

I truly feel for this guy. But at the same time it was hardly fair he dumped this problem on his wife. He called her to come home from work and deal with the drop out situation and their daughter. Why didn’t he just stay and they both sorted this out. She is his child, too, and instead of dealing with the issues and reassuring his daughter that this isn’t the end of the world, he just left. Sorry, but I don’t understand what kind of parent would just leave and go back to work after a huge bomb like that was dropped on their family. Did he not want to find out why their daughter kept this from them? I would have so many questions!

My heart breaks for him. How unfair that he loses his wife at the hands of his child whom he obviously loves so much. I pray his heart, mind & soul heal from this tremendous hurt.

Sorry to say but the entitlement and lack of discipline and not being taught the real world is no one other than the parents fault. For the family to "support" her after the butchering of her mother is pathetic. It shows how this family will go to great lengths to "appear" as successful at all costs. This case is so unbelievably sad and senseless. She seemed to have really understanding parents who would have supported her no matter what. A luxury that a lot of young people don’t have. I applaud the prosecutor with his careful and gentle questioning. Sad case. 😢

I can’t believe some of the comments I see, they are absolutely sickening. This girl was undiagnosed, and she hast to live with her self, knowing what she did, and that will be a lifetime of torture. And I do hope they put her in a mental facility and not jail. I really admire the grandmother, perfect example of unconditional love.

Prosecutor is doing an amazing job and showing empathy and respect but also laying a foundation. She’s so guilty and sane!

She was continuing to lie about her situation at school, and when she talked to dad she made up a story about intruder to try and cover for herself and make herself look innocent. That behavior is not what happens when you are insane. It shows she knew that what she did was wrong. If she didn’t know it was wrong for her to do, she wouldn’t have tried to cover it up. If you know what you are doing is wrong, you are not legally insane.

When our kids were in college they signed the FERPA waiver so we would have access to their records. That is always an option if you ask your kids. It’s their choice. If kids don’t want that, they should pay their own way. Our kids paid for most of their schooling but still signed it. At ages 18-19-20 they’re still developing and still need help and support. Her dad breaks my heart. Losing his wife at the hands of his daughter has to be even more painful than at the hands of a stranger.

Right. The other benefit of parents having access to grades is to realize a rapid decline in grades. Red flags the child is struggling and needs help and support. This girl became adept at deception. She reminds me of Casey Anthony. Lies upon lies to cover up murder. Then feigned mental illness saying her father molested her.

This is still an option if the student agrees to it. Quite frankly tho, if you need see the students grades to decide whether or not to pay, then don't pay. It's not your life or consequences to judge the grades. You either support your student or you don't, regardless of the report card.

Parents could also require the online login information from their child and request to see their grades in order for them to continue paying the tuition. It’s not the university’s responsibility to referee between parents and their adult children.

Regardless of what his wife/her mother would want, we have a legal system, and if she is guilty, she needs to pay the consequences. Like anyone else.

It's perhaps easier to blame a psychotic break than to face the fact she commited the premeditated murder of her mother. I feel so bad for this family. If something happened to one of us at least we’ll be able to tell the police here’s where they were last. I think as an adult you should a person you can trust with security. The prosecution also had her analyzed & their psychologist diagnosed her with borderline personality disorder with anxiety. We don't know who was right, but if she did have schizophrenia it wouldn't appear suddenly for one violent event & then disappear just as quickly. She had never had any known episodes of visual or auditory hallucinations, no known history of psychosis of any kind. Schizophrenia & psychosis aren't exactly easy to hide. I think she isn't mentally ill in that way. I think she just acted selfishly & knowingly murdered her mom.

Guilty, she knew exactly what she was doing and got caught in her lies. I feel for the family but she is not crazy!

This man truly breaks my heart. Seems like a genuine, gentle, caring father and human, I can only imagine what a wonderful woman and mother Brenda must've been. Psychosis can begin and end VERY suddenly with a trigger when there's an underlying psychotic disorder. She didn't flee after. She was allegedly afraid of everyone and paranoid and hearing voices instructing her before, so of course she was paranoid and hearing voices commanding her to do things after.

The mental illness they are claiming she has is seen in males from their late teens to their early 20's. In females it's seen in their late 20's to early 30's. Medical fact. Most people don't take their medication bc they feel like zombies. I worked in a hospital & maybe she lost it due to another mental illness but not the one their claiming. She's barely looks like she's on any meds now! This poor man he'll blame himself for leaving before his wife got home. Although we all know it's not his fault & who would ever think this would happen it's so sad & tragic. The ripple effect goes is never ending. He lost his beautiful wife & in such a horrific way. 😢💔 🇨🇦

15 years is a long time. She will have become a completely different person by then. Some countries cap their sentences lower than that.

When Akron police officers arrived at the Powell family’s home in March 2020, they weren’t sure what had happened. Brenda Powell was lying on the floor of her bedroom, covered with blood, with life-threatening injuries. Sydney Powell was also bloody and hysterical. She told officers someone had broken into their home and her mother urged her to get out. Prosecutors pointed to Sydney’s repeated lies before and after her mother’s slaying and attempted to cover up what she had done as evidence that she was sane when she killed her mother. Sydney killed her mother by stabbing her repeatedly with a steak knife and hitting her with a cast-iron frying pan. She then broke a window to make it look like there was a break-in. Sydney, 23, is charged with two counts of murder - one that means purposely causing a death and the other that involves causing a death as the result of a felonious assault, as well as felonious assault and tampering with evidence. Her trial will be tried in two parts. The first will feature prosecutors providing evidence on the slaying and the second will focus on Powell’s insanity defense. Three psychologists found Powell to be not guilty by reason of insanity, while a fourth expert determined that she was sane when she killed her mother. Jurors will choose among three verdicts: guilty, not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. Her dad said that she never had a problem with her mental health. In my opinion, while arguing with her mother, she decided to take a knife and frying pan knowing what was she going to do...She stabbed and stabbed and stabbed her mother 30 times, hitting her with a cast-iron frying pan...she knew very well that she was killing her mother. She wasn't having delusions, she wasn't hearing voices. At that moment she hated her mother, wanted her dead, was angry, and out of control. After the murder, she continued to lie and was tempering with the crime scene. She is Guilty of taking her mother's life and should get a life without the possibility of parole.

Of course it’s impossible to believe that a daughter could do this to her own mother. But i think you are right, that _she knew what she did was wrong._ Obviously, because she tried covering it up. It very well could have been done in a state of temporary psychosis…. But we now know that Sydney Powell is capable of killing another human being in a fit of rage. *_Psychosis or not, she is still a murderer._*

Maybe the stress induced by her lies had affected her mental health for so long that she was starting to dissociate. I see real similarities here between her and chandler halderson- both lived pathologically fabricated lives to avoid dealing with their problems, but it was only a temporary solution. In the end it built up to a murderous explosion all because they were too scared to own up to their own lies.

Wait, did I hear correctly- she’s been staying with her mom’s mom while out on bond?? If that’s the case, I cannot fathom the forgiveness that poor poor woman has to let her into her home. My heart breaks terribly for her dad and brother and the rest of their family.

Yes for almost 3.5 years she’s been living with her grandma. She sees dad and her brother regularly. They have been begging for over 3 years to not go to trial. But the prosecution didn’t care. And here we are.

The government considered my son a dependent of mine so I had to fill out all the paperwork giving my personal information for him to get any financial aid and student loans. I co-signed for thousands in student loans and I paid his food bills for 4 years. So parents are not given any information on their child’s progress? If I didn’t give up my right to privacy then my son couldn’t go to college. I take care of my kids. The fact is parents are expected to provide and pay for everything with no information given to them. For example: parent provides and pays for healthcare but when they go to the doctor you are not given any information but you’re expected to pay any out of pocket expenses. Luckily for me, I have a great relationship with my children so these are not an issue in my life. My expression was more about the expectations of parents with no rights.

My heart shattered when he said he left after talking with his wife. Absolutely tore me up. This poor man seems like a gentle, caring soul & can't accept that his daughter is pure shite. The biggest take-away for me now is that he told his daughter that they would "WORK IT OUT" and she STILL murdered her mom. He gave her hope that things would be ok. Sydney was apparently close with her mom & would've known that she would be ok through this all even if her parents were disappointed. SOO this mental illness is 10000% bull. They'd rather be disappointed with her education struggles than disappointed that she's a violent, horrible human. I hope the dad can somehow find peace through this disgusting mess. She was so damn lucky to have both supportive parents. this has really affected me.

She hid in hotel rms so I believe she projected her anger at herself on her mom & the rage of stabbing her so many times was how she felt towards herself bc Sydney's dad said it would all be OK. The fact that her father passed any discipline to the mom, and her mom knew exactly what her daughter was up to , saying why does it seem like you are always scamming me. She saw right through her act, while her father continues to make excuses for her. He is pretty clueless. I think it is awful that no one is thinking about the victim and what she went through. She did not have any break in reality. She knew what she did was wrong and tried to lie some more and cover it up. I wonder how the brother feels. His sister brutally took away his mother and the family is saying she couldn't help it. Maybe they should start thinking about someone other than the precious Sydney before they lose their son also.

I truly feel sorry for him but I completely agree. I was surprised when he said “being the dad” he didn’t talk to her that often. My dad called me every other day in school. My dad knew my roommates. My dad checked on my mental health regularly. When I began to fall behind and struggle, he knew, and he brought me home. Being “the dad” is more reason to stay involved and ask questions. My friends would always say they were jealous of my relationship with my dad but I think it’s so weird that a dad would just not be involved or ask questions.

It’s clear the girl wasn’t scared by her father that’s why she thought she could get away with it and use the love her dad has for her to convince him. This is so terribly heartbreaking! I found Brenda Powell obituary on line. I read the beautiful messages people wrote. Many are from parents of children who had cancer. Some children survived and some passed away. Messner m Brenda was an absolute treasure to the world!! I'm so sad that her own child took her precious life. This had torn the family to pieces Im sure. She was so pretty too the eyes. Like a beacon of light. I can't imagine what she thought as her child stuck a knife into her. I know the way I said it sounds cold but that's my thought. She may not of had much time to think. I hope she passed quickly!!! 😢😢😢 this daughter needs to cry and not stop crying. The ❤love❤ of a good Mom can't be replaced and she was apparently really close to her daughter. How? She could do such a thing is beyond comprehension! It's so WRONG. Someone I am close to was diagnosed with schizophrenia. I believe that she might legitimately be suffering from it.

This case reminds me of the case where the guy/kid lied to his parents about college, he said he worked for space X, he had a job and he had none of them. He murdered his parents, dismembered them and burned them in the fireplace. He also tried to say he was schizophrenic and the reality was he was a lying, manipulative, entitled brat who murdered his parents rather than telling him the truth.

That is my take-away - for sure. I'm not going to say mentally ill, or insane, because just started watching it today. When my nephew & nieces symptoms came out from our end wed say I didn't notice until the schizophrenia over takes them. If I had to give an answer I'd say she snapped; something happened.

No I don't believe she is mentally ill either. I had a brother with schizophrenia and you know when they are schizophrenic. The love of a child can go way too far as it did in this case. It can stifle their social growth. This monster couldn't accept failure, she had parents that had high expectations and didn't teach life skills before sending her out into this imperfect world. Once she got to college and realized she couldn't smooze her professors and she got the grades she deserved she couldn't handle it. Chandler Halderson who butchered his parents was the same way. Over protective, high expectation parents create these monsters. Then they cry mental health when there is no where else to turn. It sickens me because this does an injustice to the true mentally ill people out there. What is even worse is they are still to this day..."rallying behind her." There are no limits with these people. Show some respect to your poor deceased loved one.

Such a good man. Working his whole life for his family. He and his wife. Putting their daughter thru college. Going on family vacations every summer to “Disney or the beach”. He says Sydney and her mom were “unbreakable”, and they never fought. He supports his daughter thru this horrendous situation, even as his soulmate was murdered by her, he continues to stand behind his daughter with concern and understanding. This is so heartbreaking, yet at the same time…. it is deeply touching to see this unconditional love of a father.

Had this been brought to attention of her parents in 1st year when her grades drastically dropped the mother would still be alive. College is the next level of schooling most time paid by the parents who only want the best for there still immature kids IMO have right to know the important things about there kids education and disciplines. My best friends brother truly had schizophrenia. She loved him and he her. But he went off his meds and tried to beat her to death with a hammer. The family forgave him over time, but he still went to jail for 10yrs. You have to pay the price for your actions. Insane or not.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. No one wins here. Either way. This whole family has been torn to shreds.

It's my understanding that people with schizophrenia are not typically violent. I'm not understanding how if she was told "Don't worry we'll work it out" by both her mother and father that she would suddenly snap and murder her mother. A lot has been left out by this proven young liar.

It’s possible.Some people are diagnosed with an illness like that until they are in their 20’s and it kicks in.I’m not sure I believe this girl has schizophrenia but doctors are saying she did. I had a schizophrenic cousin.He went decades without being violent until he hit his mid 40’s and by his 50’s they had to put him into an institution for the safety of others as the violent episodes grew worse. When the episodes happened,he was completely in insanity not thinking to hide grades from school or what his parent would think finding out he lied. The man did NOT know one end from up while in that state. Not sure I buy Sydney is one….

I had a psycotic episode for the first time when I was 45. No history of mentally illness other than PSTD. Got threaten by someone and was so scared that I flipped over after months becoming more and more paranoid and thinking anyone was after me. Thankfully I didn’t harm anyone and I have been fine since that.

I feel so sorry for this man. You can see that he feels guilty that he left home before his wife came. I hope he will learn to forgive himself and recognize that he didn't do anything wrong. No one would have guessed that a child would kill their mother. Poor guy! Such a terrible situation.

Sorry i beg to differ on people not able to guess that a child could be a killer. Infact i have seen since last many many years n watching countless murder videos where the teenagers are killers most of the time. Hence i would say try them as adults and not juveniles. In my country countless murders hv inreased n been done by teenagers since the last 2 decades, Its hgh time the law stop treating them as juveniles with lesser sentences and try them as adult murderers.

CAN LAW AND CRIME JUST GIVE US THE WHOLE TRIAL???? God knows that Court TV will not do it..

My heart breaks for him and his family. I lost both of my parents to cancer at young ages (dad 57 and mom 66). As evil and unfair terminal illness is, I feel blessed to have been able to say goodbye. You never get over something like that… unless you’re cold and unfeeling like this heartless b*tch

I couldn’t imagine doing something like that to her. I’m not religious, but count each and every day as a blessing ❤️

Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad he was 50 my mom was 62 I lost both by my age 44 only have a brother left and my husband and kids. She is very ungrateful and will reap what she has sown!

I am kinda stuck on why he didn't want anyone (Sydney) to know he was coming home... Has something happened before to make him wary, to have her unaware he was coming home? This is such a tragic crime. The dad is in a awfully terrible spot.

In the series of investigations which took place immediately after the crime, he said his daughter sydney often gave “vague non answers” to his and his wifes questions; he felt that, if she knew he was on his way home, she would just leave the house and continue to ignore calls/texts/questions from parents. They had planned to confront her face to face together, about what was going on at school.

I cant imagine the pain this lovely man is feeling. Losing his beloved wife at the hand of his beloved daughter. His mind and heart suffering complete torture. So very sad. I hope his friends and family realise the pull on him and don't desert him when he needs them most.

Initially I thought maybe she should be given mercy and go to a mental institution. I didn’t know she stabbed her mother 23 times. Prison is the only option.

Although I sympathize with the father, did he ever think that maybe his daughter could have killed him next when he came home after work seeing what she did? After all, if it wasn't for the college calling the police raising the alarm, he could have been next.

This guy doesn't know a whole lot does he? If there were no issues why would he leave his phone at work so that she wouldn't see him coming home? I don't think he's telling the whole truth. I definitely think he knows more than what he's saying and I believe part of his testimony is an outright lie. I believe he did know that his daughter had some issues. He's a witness for the defence but I'm sure the prosecutors had to subpoena him. He's helping the defense attorneys concoct a case while he's testifying for the prosecution. He never saw any mental illness but she had concussions playing sports. I don't think his efforts are going to pay off in the end, but they might. You never know what a jury's going to do these days.

Something is fishy. The whole concept of a tracking device that sends a notification when she is in the house rubs me the wrong way. Find my phone is a very normal thing not this scenario. It is very weird and alarming. Overbearing and pushy parents, spoiled and entitled kid. A lot more to the story!

​@tmcurly was there evidence presented that showed she hated her mother? Maybe I missed it? Life 360 was a popular app before Find My iPhone even blew up. So that's not too unusual to ensure your family members are safe..everyone can see each other on the map of general vicinity.

Very uninvolved and unaware father. He should have stayed home and talked to his daughter with his wife.

Reading between the lines there, I'm wondering if he knew there would be an epic battle. I'm guessing he didn't want to be there when it happened. And not by any stretch condoning what happened, I'm thinking for the daughter to be this terrified to explain that she had flunked out -- there may have been a pattern over the years of hyper-criticism and over-expectation. I'm just surmising, and I could be wrong. At any rate, such a heartbreaking tragedy for this whole family. She's in college already, but they all still have tracking programs on their phones? That strikes me as odd, just too controlling. What does everyone else think?

I saw a few tears in the beginning, however I think she's trying to make herself cry. IF she was crying as much as she's pretending to, her face and eyes would be red from all that crying. She is putting on an act!!

I think she's realizing what it's like to not have a mother anymore and that she is the cause of this and that she will be handed a jail sentence.

I understand the family wanted to support her and stand by her, HOWEVER; if she gets away with this, she has learned nothing and her next victim...? This time it's her mother, what happens when her coffee she orders isn't the way she wants it? OR someone cuts her off?

I’m guessing this girl has been a problem through the years…..this IS NOT A FLUKE.

I have a few mental illness diagnoses and to this day I feel guilt about screaming "i hate you" and my mother decades ago as a teenager. She now has dementia and our roles are reversed. I would take a bullet to protect her and if i could push a button for her to have her to not have dementia and i would cease to exist, I'd push that button without a second thought. I truly cannot imagine how this is possible (in the absence of abuse, that is. I'm sure self-defense is another issue entirely, but there is no denying she had a loving home with parents doing their best).

My heart is breaking for this poor man. How he is suffering up there on the stand is heartbreaking.

I couldn’t even fathom being hit in the head with a cast iron pan a few times! I’m praying that first blow rendered her unconscious. When you stop and think just how violent and horrendous the murder was over something this young woman brought upon herself is unfathomable. I know it’s his daughter, (I have a daughter the same age) but unless the mother was evil and the father could empathize (which the mother seemed like a caring person thus far), I don’t know if I could forgive my daughter. Pure rage and horror in how she killed her!

I think she knew she could manipulate the dad, but not the mom. The coward and the manipulator are left to sort this out. You don’t accidentally KILL someone it takes serious bloodlust, hatred and narcissistic behavior.

I think this family was a lot like the Halderson. Hardworking and just trying to provide the best opportunities for their child. It’s so sad this happened. They prob would have understood and helped her through it if she just told them the truth.

Sidney sounds like she just did whatever she wanted to do! I can understand her feeling that she was attending a College she didn't feel comfortable at and wanting to Transfer to another one, but just discuss it with your Parents and work it out instead of hiding it. Maybe something happened to her at that College that she Never told them about?

Ignorant comment, most of these dass are also often low educated people who never stepped a foot into the university. That's probably why he believed her so fast.

It appears the defendant just didn’t have it in her to tell her parents the truth and that’s sad but she’s guilty! Sounds like Mr. Chandler case .
