Imagine you're Mario for a moment. You were just able to temporarily break the spell of the endless staircase by building up immense speed and leaping your way up the staircase. After defeating Bowser and leaving the stage, you try to go back down the staircase, only to find it's still cursed with the spell. You may have defeated Bowser, but now you're hopelessly trapped up an endless staircase of nightmares, with nothing but you and a warp to a strange sky world filled with enemies. There's no going back; the trick you used to get up here can't get you back down. There's nothing you can do but endlessly listen to the ever-descending music, slowly driving you insane. (Also, before someone goes 🤓 on me, I'm completely aware you arrive outside the castle after Bowser in the Sky, I adapted it a little)

This is the music used in the alternate universe where forward long-jumps are the exploit to get past the stairway

Mario tried to go up the endless stairs for a few seconds and gives up quickly and goes back down. However, suddenly the way down is also infinite. Mario panics before the reality sinks in, Mario is permanently trapped holy shit what the fuck why is he going so fast how is he long jumping backwards what is happening
