We all know how HULK can transform from human to giant green monster in the course of seconds (hint: it’s gamma radiation). But, what's the secret to his pants transforming like they do? She-Hulk explains this away as just “spandex,” but there’s NO way that I’m buying that! This is what I think his pants are really made of…

    It's also so wrong biologically. Over the course of a day your feet will swell due to gravity. Heeled shoes make it even worse because they hold the foot in an unnatural position. At the beginning of the ball she would be more likely to lose the shoe while her foot is it's regular size, but by the end of the night her feet would have swelled up slightly making the shoes tighter and therefore less likely to fall off.

    Here's the thing. She Hulk's suit rips a LOT in the comics. Anime levels of fan service before anime did fan service. So her suit having low tensile strength makes a lot of sense.

    We actually got somewhat of an explanation in Thor: Ragnarok for the pants. Banner says something about Tony making special pants for him so they never rip. When Banner transforms in the final battle of Ragnarok you can also see that the whole pants are still intact. I doubt Tony just made him some spandex pants.

    Part of it is regional averages, right? It would be nice if they just used actual measurements like men’s pants. Shoulder width, chest circumference, and torso length should be enough to let you know it’ll fit. Perhaps also an abdomen circumference, but that’s the world of mass produced fashion.

  • @MissOnana

    @MissOnana

    Жыл бұрын

    FYI, that's a woman only problem. For example men's pants - I believe their clothes in general, actually - are sized based on key measurements, like waist and length. So if you measure 36 inches at waist, you just look for that, not what size that COULD be if the brand agrees to it. Id love to see a theory on that regardless, but figured it was worth mentioning it's a girl problem; much like the pockets issue they already have an episode on.

    Spandex is probably still your best cost-effective. Also, tensile strength isn't the issue with spandex, we've seen his pants get cut by blades in comics. This just means they are less durable to cutting and stretching beyond normal values (and if he has spandex that is up there in its ability to stretch) it should be fine. Main thing is even if you can stretch it that much you are gonna be worried about the holes in between, so it might not even really hide anything unless it's really thick.

  • @cassandrathomas5220

    @cassandrathomas5220

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I was a bit confused as to why spandex is an automatic no just because of the tensile strength. Sure, it'll wear out fast and get holes more often (unless it's super thick like you mentioned), but since both hulks are well within the fabric's ability to expand, it's not like the threads couldn't handle a couple transformations at least. Plus, it's much cheaper than any other option on the market. Sure, MatPat's perfect pants are great, but way unreasonable in price. 😂

    another thing is you can make composite or laminate pants (a panel/s of fabric inside a pocket of another type like inserting kevlar into a jacket lining to make it bullet resistant). These are real-life things like sportswear, rescue work, and maternity clothes,. Essentially Hulk would have a normal cloth with sections that are made of spectra or spandex that allow it to stretch as Bruce grows so his gamma buns aren't just out in the breeze. He might end up with tears and rips if he flexes too hard but Hulk's pants do that anyway in film and comics now.

    One factor you might have missed is the elastic range in a stress strain curve for material, yes the material elongation (strain) and tensile strength (UTS), may stand up to the needs individually but if the material is stressed enough it goes into the plastic region of the curve, the material will not be able maintain it's shape and strength. Think of bending a paper clip, you can flex it somewhat but too much and it is permanently deformed (not yet snapped). In the case of the hulk, it would be if his pants grows with him but when he turns normal again, the pants are too big. The proper analysis (may have factored this in the research) would be looking at the yield strength (a point on the curve where it only has 0.2% offset to the linear portion of the curve). There it would have the highest strength possible plus the max stretch where it can return to normal many times (I'm ignoring fatigue stress in this comment for the other engineers reading this)

    Another factor to consider when talking about the fabric: what the weave type of the fabric is. Fabric itself is a combination of two factors, one being fiber (silk, polyester blends, etc), but the other is how those fibers are woven together (satin, twill, etc). High tensile fibers like you mentioned are fantastic, but certain types of weaves will not stretch or shrink as the character does, even though it may withstand the force of the size change!

    Loving the new channel. As much as I love Film and Game Theory, I think it's really nice to have the other 2 channels be much more broadly applicable and appealing. Not everyone is up to date on FNAF or seen the movies or shows. But everyone eats. Everyone wears clothes. You don't need background info to enjoy the videos from Food and Style Theory.

    Not gonna lie, when Style Theorists was announced, I was skeptical. But man, you and your team can literally make drying paint sound interesting. Production value on point, interesting tidbits of information and making it so relatable that will enrapture just about anyone - regardless of their predisposed position on said topics. I've been a sub to Game Theory since the VERY VERY early days. I'm talking when there was only about 20 videos up, so I'm very attuned to MatPat's style. But till now, all 3 of his other channels have been something I'm naturally interested in. This channel has showed me, with mucho gusto, that your style and delivery can be applied to just about any topic and be extremely enjoyable. Or maybe I'm just a nerd............A THEORIST NERD............thanks for uploading.

    I do find it intersting that you didn't go into the actual weave of the fabric here. Tensile strength is definitely a big factor, but when the fabric the shorts are made of is a naturally stretchy knit, it can change how much actual tension that spandex is under. Knits have stretch factor to them just due to how the threads interact with each other, which lets less naturally elastic fibers make stretch fabrics (i.e. wool knits). Also, not all pants have a waistband. The idea of spectra being used as the stitching thread for these hulk pants isn't actually that far fetched. Spectra is a common material used for fishing line, something that cosplayers and fashion designers have been using for nearly invisible hems and stitching for years.
