About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, and plugin effects. Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

    I fucking love the messages about "I haven't changed my strings" or the weak gear shit. Like fuck off. I'm a 16 year old who worked about 20 hours a week this summer at a minimum wage-paying job ($7.25/hour) and I managed to get a Squier bass, Rumble 25 amp, a power chord and neck strap, countless lunch runs, and a used fender jazz bass. That all totaled up to almost $1000 and I still have around $400-$500. And I'm willing to buy new strings for my bass, I'm going to soon as my jazz bass is used and I don't know how long the old owner had it. Plus the strings on it are kinda trashy anyways even though the thing still sounds miles better than the Squier. But I managed to do this as a 16-year-old making $7.25 an hour and working around 20 hours a week. HOW CAN A YOUNG ADULT (20-25 years old) BE SO LAZY AS TO BRING IN A SQUIER WITH STRINGS FROM THE LAST ICE AGE WHEN I'VE DONE WHAT I'VE DONE AS A TEENAGER?!

    @MikeyG_f-of-x

    He didn't say he would pay him, tho. He said "I'll sort you out for your time." That's generally an empty phrase. Anyone who is trying to make a living as some form of artist selling their skills gets shit like that ALL the time. Maybe this guy genuinely meant "I'll pay you whatever your hourly rate is," but that more often means, "gimmie please."

  • @JBrooksNYS

    @JBrooksNYS

    what else could "ill sort you out for your time" possibly mean? And he even clarified what he meant payment in the next text. I think this channel is starting to foster a victim complex in some engineers who subscribe to it. How about some stupid texts from engineers to musicians?

  • @MikeyG_f-of-x

    @MikeyG_f-of-x

    Like I said, it is typically a phrase that leads to someone not wanting to pay you. (And this is from experience as a professional digital artist, BTW) When someone actually intends to pay me for some bit of work, they don't start out with "I'll sort you out. " You know what they say? Something like: Hey, I really need this thing done. What's your hourly rate, how long do you think it will take, and can you cut me deal of it's less than an hour? Thanks, man. You're a big help. 99% of the time, if someone starts out with something other than straight up asking about actual cost, they're hoping it'll just be a favor to them. Or maybe a beer. Or maybe "exposure."

    As a project studio owner, read... Home studio, since before ITB became the thing (we were those with tape, adat, then... Win98, been ITB every since), I found these hilarious. My main gig over the years has been as a cover band rock guitar player, with an interest in writing, and production. And over the years of doing band projects, original projects, and demos, I've seen or heard a lot of the same things. I like your style man, I've also learned from a lot from your contemporaries. It is really all about getting better at your craft, isn't it? But keep at it, because whenever I go on the Craigslist to look at ads, I have to chuckle. It's great to be an old dude. Peace brother, keep it metal.

    Glen, thank you for being the voice in the back of every engineer's head. I think I may have one group of people, who rank lower than your bass players. My bad apples were RAPPERS. It's a whole other level of narcissism. I had to take these sessions in by necessity, as I was the financial backbone (the only engineer) for the commercial studio, I was working in. I am a music producer of different genres, grew up playing death metal, but moved into different stuff like acid rock and electronic stuff like Aphex Twin (NOT DANCE MUSIC) - so I didn't mind taking on a few vocal recordings. Real easy money. Up until I had dabs dripped into one of my day-old synthesizers, our studio raided by strangers to party all through the night, and didn't help clean up. The worst was the gun threats, received for criticizing a recording take. For some reason none of the other musicians in other genres acted this way. Didn't matter what color they were, the rappers came in and fucked shit up, on the regular.

    I've been a bass player for a long time. Even when I was a broke ass teenager I always loved the sound of new strings and tried to put fresh ones on every few months. Unless your playing Motown or something that requires a flat dull sound, I cannot for the life of me understand why bass players do not want to change strings or otherwise properly maintain their instrument. I love my bass and treat it like any other fine instrument, and always want to sound my best in public or on a recording.

    The first two minutes of this video is what got me out of teaching music, I started teaching guitar in my teenage years on my own, everyone instead expected to become friends and get free lessons. I later got employed by a studio that ensured I was getting paid for my work; even then people still expected that over time lessons would be free. It still to this day surprises me how many people think they can barge into your life and get free work out of you, unless I know you personally outside of my passion, I am probably not going to invest the time, time which would benefit me in no way whatsoever.

    Hi, Glenn. I'm wondering what your opinion of bass players who can't afford to change their strings is? I have been playing bass for (about) 4 years now but have never changed my strings due to the fact that I'm too poor and am in college. I get the whole "change it before you record" thing as it gives a much better tone for the track, but if I can't afford to rent studio time should I even be giving a shit about the flat tones I get on my bass that much or should I just focus on practising before I step into the industry? Hope you see this as it will help me immensely, thanks. (My bass was also a cheap as fuck knockoff for like £40)

    you can take your strings off your bass and boil them in water to about 10-15 minutes. Then dry them thoroughly after they are done. Put them back on and they will sound more lively. This probably sounds like a troll, but seriously look it up.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't know what make the strings are, if I had restringed my bass at least once with some Ernie Ball strings (or any other decent strings) I would feel a little safer doing this as they are better made and the risk of making the strings brittle is lower for good strings. But again, thanks for the suggestion.

    On basses with strings that don't get changed, I recently read an interview in which a bass player recounted the following: When we recorded our lest record the producer asked me if I wanted to give his Precision a try. He said I should have a go with it, because it had an amazing DI sound. The next day he brought it to the studio and I played it dry a bit while he was setting up. The strings were dead. Absolutely dead! So I said "OK, I'll do it, but let me change the strings first". He went "No way. These strings will never get changed. This bass with these dead strings has been on some albums I've produced. Its tone is legendary." The bass player: Roger Glover. The producer: Bob Ezrin. The records he mentions: Pink Floyds "The Wall", Peter Gabriel "Peter Gabriel(I)" and Alice Coopers "Schools Out". So Glover didn't change the strings and it's on Deep Purples "Now What?!" When I read that interview I thought that the role reversal (bass player wants to change strings, producer is strictly opposed to it) was kind of funny. And sure, that's not going to work 99% of the time, but then again, you can't argue it didn't work for Ezrin...

    These problems with price negotiations remind me of my own work as a legal courier. The last time someone called from out of the blue to give me work as if it were a done deal without negotiating a price first, it turned out they expected me to do it for less money than doing what they wanted would have cost me in gas and bridge tolls. And they were basing that price on a completely different service I provided to them two years earlier. You really do need to get in writing what you are going to charge before you agree to do anything.
