About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

    My personal opinion of modern metal is that not only the bands, but even whole genres are so homogenous. Check out Sad Wings of Destiny-high energy metal, stomping crushing metal, and even an awkward piano crooner. And yeah. It sounds pretty funny today, but this explains two reasons I like them: they had wide tonal and expressive variation and they were willing to take risks. The reason the early giants deserve respect is I their music, but also in their courage to do something different. For all the bravado and production of modern metal, I’d say they are musical cowards. Think you aren’t? Then play a six minute piano ballad in a semi-operatic construct at your next show.

    I really should stop blocking cheap promoters looking to hire for live sound production and send you their stuff. It's a bit redundant. "Got a gig for you. Pay is exposure" or variations of the "you're not gonna get paid" theme. I refuse. Then they go ballistic. A recent one a promoter who I refused but threatened me by saying they've already put my information on their promotional material. Refused to sign a contract, so of course wouldn't make a deposit and I even said "I'm not going to take the gig". Then I get a call the day off being screamed at 'Where the hell are you?" Uh, I'm at home, about to do some car repairs, since I don't have any bookings with contracts for today. These never get old! Thanks for making this Wednesday great!

    Yo what’s up Glenn,I started vocals when I was 15 (around 2018) and my arrogant ass hated your videos because you criticized mic cupping (which I did often when starting out) it took me two years to realize you were right and that completely changed how I sounded,I just wanted to say thank you for leading me to improve myself vocal technique wise,your videos have helped me learn how to take criticism and made me less skeptical of change/improvement,so thank you bro,keep doing what you do man.🤘

    Just to be sure you'll see this: Master channel in Reaper has mono button, but all DAW nowdays. But I noticed recently that it has a few mono models: L+R (which is default), only L or only R or L-R. So, what should I use for mixing? What mono model most modern mono systems rely on? Asking cuz if I switch to Only L model all my sound suddenly gain better mono compitability, but I don't know if that's right for best transfer to other systems. I suspect the answer is it's always left, but I want to be sure.

  • @trikone14

    @trikone14

    5 жыл бұрын

    Stereo in analog consoles was 2 mono channels on called L outputting to the left speaker and called R outputting to the right. These are represented on reaper by the L or R mono channels. You should instead use the L+R which compacts both channels into one so everything still works clean even if you do have elements panned.

  • @trikone14

    @trikone14

    Also mono compatibility comes from not having a lot of stereo separation and effects like phaser,chorus,LFO's etc. Try to remove these before trying to mix in mono. Adding them later on is fine as long as you dont mess up the phase or add gain.

  • @ZethKeeper

    @ZethKeeper

    Thanks. The thing is, if I switch to Only L, is sounds cleaner than L+R to me. And also, all mono instruments and synths are usually utilizing L channel for mono, so, here comes my question =)

  • @martinhauge4325

    @martinhauge4325

    5 жыл бұрын

    You would normally mix in stereo. If you're in mono it's usually to check that your mix will still work on mono systems, and then you need to use L + R, because that's what they do. This is where problems like cancellation between the two sides will show up. Only L or only R is just for listening to one side at a time, not usually something you want. It's a bit like a solo button, almost. You mention mono instruments using L, that's not really true. They just use one half of a stereo channel, it doesn't matter which. They should get panned to somewhere else in the stereo image anyways (you don't want all your mono instruments to end up in the left speaker!). L - R is also for special purposes, it sort of removes the center and lets you listen to the sides only - if you ever come across mid/side stereo that's L-R in one channel and L+R in the other, but it's not something you'd normally use. If L sounds better than L + R, that means that you have elements in L and R that cancel each other out, that's exactly the sort of problem you try to spot by listening in mono.
