About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

there´s a pretty simple procedure to force musicians to pay up. first of all, always get a deposit before even starting to work on a mix. then, put little 1 second mute gaps in the mix every 30 seconds or so. that way they can´t use it without paying the final payment first. lastly, only send the final mix without the mute gaps after they payed the rest. no money, no mixes, no compromise. i´ve never had any trouble with this procedure.

HA HAA! Excellent. Although, rather than simply puttin' muted gaps in the mix, I'd replace that with an overly loud *"DEMO VERSION!!!"* about every three-to-four seconds.

Good tips. I interject a British text to speech lady saying "Real Home Recording" every 20 seconds. People who send mixes before payment are idiots. Absolute IDIOTS!

4:20 this reminds me of this time that a guy who I met one time. He claimed to have been playing 10 years. I was tuning his guitar (sigh) and couldn't help but notice that the strings were strung (according to me and pretty much every guitarist that has changed his or her strings before) wrong. Props to him for putting them on the right pegs, but they weren't strung to where you twist counter clockwise to tighten and clockwise to loosen. They were backwards. I was definitely impressed. I guess you aren't required to do it the way most do, but it still got on my nerves.

Well aren't you special, taking Jong-Un at his word... The only part of the US that's within range of that missile system is Alaska. Maybe you're unaware, but Kim Jong-Un has a nasty habit of bold-faced lying about pretty much anything. According to him, his mother was a unicorn, he never eats or shits, and he invented the hamburger. I suppose you believe that too? I mean, come on, dumbfuck! He's not even a good liar, and yet you still fell for it. Sorry to say, but if you're that dumb, you're destined to get fucked over alot in life. On that note, I have some bonds that are *guaranteed* to make 3000% returns. All I need is your bank account number and PIN. You interested? lmao

Maybe I should put a disclaimer for less intelligent people, like INF1D3L010 : "But the last missile test wasn`t a failure" - true, all the news (at least the ones that I read) were reporting it as a successful test "he announced recently that all of US is now in range of the North Korean missiles." - true, that is what he said I never said I believe him, everyone knows that he`s exaggerating.

Sometimes things are learnt through the hard way. 5 or 6 years ago I went to the local guitar shop, because my bass needed to be restrung. The tech yelled at me something like "it's so easy to restring a bass, you should do it by yourself!". In the middle of the shop. With the other customers watching at me. How embarassing. But, in the end, I learned how to restring a bass and I never had a tech doing it for me again. Oh, I change strings more or less one time at year by the way. So, fellow bass players, do yourself a favor: don't be a living joke. Change your strings and learn how to do it properly. BASS IS LIF, after all.

How's it going Glen! I'm a younger musician and live sound engineer that's played several gigs, and worked several gigs. All of your videos have either inspired or gave me an idea to think about pertaining to my craft. I bought a bass a couple months ago(first personal bass) on a mission to be one of your first "non-useless" bassists. As soon as I got the thing, I changed the strings, adjusted the neck, cleaned and polished the body and neck. Heck, I even did a little bit of work on the electronics! The bass is only a cheap 40 dollar Ibanez bass, but it's got a pretty great feel to it and I want to say again, some of us actually care for our craft. Cheers!

The other day talking to my drums teacher I learnt that hearing loss or ear issues come too with earphones. Loud music affects too but the fact that earphones go into the ear without letting it breathe and put out wax (natural body mechanism) is what causes troubles.

Holy shit. 8:41 That's the singer for my band Korrosive! He NEVER cups the mic. In fact, at practice, the mic stays on the stand with his hands in his pocket. He explained this picture to me as a one-off where he held the mic 'like a wine glass' for a couple seconds during a song, and some journalist put it in a review and kinda dragged him for holding the mic like in the picture. Really shows how one moment out of context and send the wrong message. I have video proof of his proper mic technique.

I can back what the people are telling the Joey in the ear protection clip. I was subjected to something called the “Gates of Hades” which are sounds that are supposed to ‘induce nightmares’ when you sleep. The problem is that the people who subjected me to it used noise-cancelling Beats headphones at FULL BLAST, which is 115 dB. Hearing damage at that level starts at just THIRTY seconds of exposure and I had to endure thirty MINUTES of it. I did that 6 months ago and I still have tinnitus in both of my ears from it, and I’m starting to get convinced that I’m going to hear these ‘voices’ in my head for the rest of my life. For anyone wondering (like anyone is going to read this), I did the ‘Gates of Hades’ thing because the people who lived on my floor thought it was real and I thought it was bullshit.

Anyone who doesnt wear earpligs heed my words: I have some hearing damage from playing in metal bands since I was 15. Once tinnitus set in a couple years later I started using foam earplugs which are really terrible. Then I found alpine earplugs and they're kickass. They lower the volume without muffling any frequencies, I highly suggest using them because when you're lying in bed at night trying to sleep and all you hear is that high pitch whistling in your ears you're going to wish you did.

When I play my guitar loud, I would put on my ear plugs on that are specially tune to allow me to hear my music. You would fuck yourself up by going deaf without wearing an ear plug at a concert. I remember going to a blues show at BB Kings and my left ear was affected by the loud speakers. It took a while for my left ear to get back to normal. Peace, Flood!

Hey Glenn, can you give us some tips on building up a portfolio? I'm more of an artist myself, but my main problem is the lack of presentable works. I even have a plan to separate my hentai from the more presentable stuff, as many people and companies object them, especially the unusual stuff (those are more fun to draw). I'm currently trying a "drawing without thinking much what I want to draw" approach, making some logos for non-existing bands, etc. At software development, it got a lot worse as a lot of companies wants us to leave out non-commercial stuff like free and open-source stuff and internships (and I even got fucked over in an internship, because my boss wanted me to work for free to him, and I currently cannot afford free work as my PC now barely works and I still have a lot of unpaid college fees).

To the people who don't want to use ear protection: What sounds better to you? A. Wearing earplugs for a few hours. B. Wearing hearing aids for the rest of your life.

I produced and engineered the demo for my daughter's band. It's horrible by any reasonable standards but it was good enough that they didn't have a problem promoting themselves with it and jamming on it. I did this for *free* because I know I'm a complete amateur and I'm personally invested.....it's my girl! They still managed to treat me like shit and harass me. Constantly unprepared and trying to pass off shitty recordings because they're "tired" of playing their simplistic riffs over and over again. My daughter wasn't a jewel in the matter either. I will give her the room of having to work the hardest because of things outside of her control. Me trying to figure out how to use 3 mics to record drums where I'm having to tape them to the ceiling and sit them on pillows to get the kick. It was all pretty crazy. My point, I guess, is that if this is the treatment you get for free, I can't imagine what it's like when you're getting paid.

I bought a bass 2 years ago. The strings have never been changed, sounds like shit sure, but it gives a really raw tone that new strings just won’t capture

I'm gonna have to echo the message to wear ear plugs of some kind. I used to practice in a tiny room with my head right next to a crash symbol and our drummer was pretty powerful. I also >>used

I was about to comment about how awesome it is to have a bass player who is intelligent and who is an amazing musician who practices all the time and keeps his strings changed and does instrument set-up, and then I remembered... he started out as a guitar player. Rule #2 still applies. Now I wonder how long it will be before he sends me a Your Lead Guitar Player is a NARCISSISTIC DOUCHEBAG t-shirt.
